The City of Joondalup is delighted to present Sunday Serenades, a series of fine music concerts held in the City of Joondalup Civic Chambers on the third Sunday of each month from May to November 2016. The December concert will be held on 11 December (the second Sunday of the month). With an outstanding selection of music including jazz, classical, choral, Motown and a big brass band, there is something for everyone in the 2016 program. Sunday Serenades subscribers will also receive free entry to the Eisteddfod Showcase, which is set to feature a program of Western Australia’s rising stars. This concert will be held on Sunday 26 June, 2.00pm at the RNDM Performing Arts Centre at Sacred Heart College in Sorrento. Subscription packages are also available to save you time, money and ensure a seat at your favourite performances. For information on subscription packages, please refer to page 10. The City hopes you enjoy this wonderful season of music from some of Western Australia’s most talented performers.

Piano Prodigies 15 May 2016 2.00pm – 3.00pm This recital promises to leave you in awe of two emerging young Perth pianists. Thirteen year old pianist and composer Shuan Hern Lee performed at a sold-out Sunday Serenades concert in 2015 alongside Roman Rudnytsky and due to popular demand he will return in 2016 accompanied by 11 year old sensation Bryzlyn Sin.

Jay Weston performs as the Big O 19 June 2016 2.00pm – 3.00pm Jay Weston returns to the Sunday Serenades stage to delight an audience with a tribute to Roy Orbison. Weston’s repertoire spans a variety of styles from opera and musical theatre to classical and contemporary music ballads. Come along to see Jay bring to life memories of the man best described as ‘The Big O’, with a tribute you will not forget.

Eisteddfod Showcase Concert 26 June 2016 from 2.00pm All Sunday Serenades subscribers will receive free entry to the Eisteddfod Showcase, which is set to feature a program of Western Australia’s rising stars. Please note: This concert will be held at the RNDM Performing Arts Centre at Sacred Heart College on Hocking Parade, Sorrento.

Dreamtime Duo 17 July 2016 2.00pm – 3.00pm A special Sunday Serenades concert will be held in July to celebrate NAIDOC week. This concert will feature the Merindas, an Australian Aboriginal contemporary soul duo consisting of award-winning artists Candice Lorrae and Kristel Kickett. The Merindas caught their big break in 2012, delivering a one-off show for Noongar Radio’s premiere of ‘The Sapphires’.

They have supported some of Australia’s biggest stars including Kasey Donovan, Christine Anu and Troy Cassar-Daley. Building on their expanding fan base, the group released their first single Ready To Love which won the Indigenous WAM Song of the Year award in 2015. Drawing on their vast experience in Gospel, Blues, Soul and R&B, the Merindas will entertain you with some of biggest hits from the Motown era.

iSQ will smash the two worlds of classical and contemporary music together in a way that no-one would expect, making for renditions and re-imaginings that bring out the rock in classical and the baroque in pop.

Big Bold Brass 18 September 2016 Performance One 12.00pm – 1.00pm

There is a special complimentary afternoon tea following the July concert, offering patrons a taste of traditional Indigenous bush spices and flavours.

Sassy Strings

The Australian Army Band Perth was formed in 1949. Originally a brass band known as the Western Command Band, it was converted to a Concert Band in 1972. Today this professional ensemble is comprised of Army Reserve Soldier Musicians, with the band having performed with the likes of James Morrison and Normie Rowe. They are sure to have you tapping your feet to some of the finest Swing, Jazz and Rock ‘n’ Roll in this high energy concert.

21 August 2016 2.00pm – 3.00pm iSQ (i String Quartet) is a classically trained, finely tuned string quartet that features some of Perth’s most dynamic artists. They will perform a mixture of original arrangements though to reinterpretations of classics, with genres spanning from the Beatles to Gotye through to Metallica and Elton John.

For the first time ever, due to overwhelming demand and sold out concerts, the Australian Army Band will perform back to back concerts at the 2016 Sunday Serenades concert series.

Stylishly feminine, Andrews Gals are a bubbly trio that create that special magic that only close harmony can bring. Andrews Gals are a three-piece vocal group who will sing 1940s style, close harmony vocal music in the style of the Andrews Sisters.

Vocal ensemble Perth Harmony Chorus brings you a Christmas concert that is sure to get you into the spirit, showcasing an exciting blend of a cappella and choral arrangements. Be sure to join in the festive fun.

Alcatraz Jazz 20 November 2016 2.00pm – 3.00pm Perth’s hottest young five-piece jazz band, Alcatraz, is guaranteed to get you grooving. Powerhouse vocalist Bindhu commands the stage in her dazzling delivery of classic soul, funk and Motown hits. Alcatraz brings jazz to life with a lively cocktail of piano, guitar, bass guitar and drums.

Helpful information • Sunday Serenades concerts commence at 2.00pm and conclude at approximately 3.00pm (with the exception of the Australian Army Band that has an additional concert from 12.00pm – 1.00pm on 18 September 2016). • The additional matinee concert of the Australian Army Band concert will feature the same program for Performance One and Two. • Doors open 15 minutes prior to the start of each concert. • Each concert is held on the third Sunday of every month from May to November. The December concert will be held on 11 December (the second Sunday of the month). • Tickets can be purchased over the telephone on 9400 4912, online at joondalup.wa.gov.au or at the door. Please note that the availability of tickets cannot be guaranteed at the door. • The City of Joondalup Civic Chambers are located at 102 Boas Avenue, Joondalup. • Seating is not allocated.

• There are no intervals during concerts. • Parking is free on Sundays in the Library undercroft and outside the Administration building only. Please follow any parking signage to ensure you are not issued with an infringement. • Disabled parking bays are located near the lift in the undercroft car park and outside the City of Joondalup Administration building for easy access to the Civic Chambers. • While the City takes all reasonable care in the conduct of the Sunday Serenades concerts and the provision of a safe venue, it is your responsibility to ensure the safety of yourself, your family and your belongings when attending these concerts. • If you have transport issues, the Community Transport Program may be available if you are experiencing difficulty accessing the public transport system.
