PARK IMPROVEMENTS Old City Park Improvements are scheduled to be completed in Summer of 2019. Amenities will include a new restroom building, pavilion (above), parking lot, and walking trails. New playground equipment, swing set, outdoor ping-pong table(s), and additional parking is scheduled to be added at a later date. The jewel of the park will be a new 2 acre dog park located on the west side of the park. Entrance to Old City Park is located on Briarmeadow Ave. Friendswood PetSafe® Dog Park A City dog park has been on the drawing board for many years. In 2016, City staff members applied for and were awarded $25,000 by the PetSafe® Bark for Your Park™ program. PetSafe® is a Tennessee-based company that develops pet behavioral, containment and lifestyle product solutions. Friendswood is one of five communities that received a $25,000 award; part of more than $250,000 in PetSafe®Bark for Your Park™ program dog park grants nationwide this year. City Council had also allocated some funding for the project and Friendswood High School student Caden Fischer made the dog park his Eagle Scout project, and raised more than $25,000. Ron Carter found out about the project and generously donated another $25,000 to sponsor the bone shaped doggie splash pad. Construction on the dog park started in February 2019 and is scheduled to be completed in conjunction with Old City Park by Summer 2019. Dog Park amenities include shade structures, benches, bone shaped doggie splash pad, and a dog wash station. 4 | CITY OF FRIENDSWOOD • 2019

KEEP FRIENDSWOOD BEAUTIFUL @keepfriendswoodbeautiful Keep Friendswood Beautiful is a city board made up of 20 volunteers dedicated to enhance the aesthetic appearance of Friendswood and to encourage residents to take an active role in maintaining that appearance. Awarded the Governor’s Community Achievement Award of $210,000 in 2015, Keep Friendswood Beautiful used the money to improve the 518 medians with new landscaping under the direction of the Texas Department of Transportation. The KFB directs and coordinates management and planning of projects and education of the community; recommends budget and project priorities to City Council; seeks grants for funding opportunities; makes suggestions for conserving and protecting natural resources; and performs such other duties as the City Council may reasonably request. Friendswood has won several recognitions such as Best Places to Live, Best Town for Families, Best Suburb to Retire, and Safest City in America. Keep Friendswood Beautiful, which is under the umbrella of the City of Friendswood Parks & Recreation Department, has been an affiliate of Keep Texas Beautiful since 2009. The beautification group was originally started in 1973 as the Civic Beautification Committee, later changed their name to the Community Appearance Board in 1977, and is now known as Keep Friendswood Beautiful. 2019 • PARKS AND RECREATION | 31

Curbside Recycling Information If you do not already have a recycle bin at your residence, contact the City of Friendswood at 281-996-3232. A Waste Connection recycling truck will collect in your neighborhood once each week. To recycle, simply place the container at the curbside on the morning of your collection by 7 a.m. For more information on recycling, call Waste Connection at 281-331-0810

Simple Recycling Information Step 1: Donate First There are local, charitable organizations that would love to put your gently used clothing, textiles, and household goods to use! The Hope Village Resale Shop and Shepherd’s Nook are two great local organizations that accept clothing donations. Think about what you can donate before you recycle or trash items that you’re ready to get rid of. Step 2: Simply Recycle ...With Simple Recycling! Gather up your unwanted textiles such as gently used clothing, household goods, linens, toys, tools, coats and jackets, shoes, towels, and kitchenware. Place them in the Orange Simple Recycling bag*. (*Bag does not have to be full) Step 3: To the Curb! Collection days are the same as your regular recycling days so just bring your bag out to the curb before 7am and we’ll take care of the rest. Step 4: Give Yourself a Pat on the Back! By donating or recycling your unused items you are giving back to the community by helping others AND by keeping excess trash out of landfills. Did you know that 85% of all clothing waste ends up in a landfill for cities without curbside recycling programs? That’s 20 BILLION pounds a year in the US! New bags will be left after each pick-up, or you can call 866-835-5068. 32 | CITY OF FRIENDSWOOD • 2019

KEEP FRIENDSWOOD BEAUTIFUL Pollinator Garden NEW! The pollinator garden will consist of plants, shrubs, grasses & trees that support lifecycles of bees and other insects, butterflies & birds. The purpose of the garden is to provide a stopping point or “waystation” for these pollinators to gather and take pollen to other areas in our community. Fewer and fewer spaces are available for pollinators because of human population growth and expansion and environmental damage to existing habitats. Ideally, residents will create pollinator spaces in their own yards and our community, as a whole, can help support these species. Upon completion there are plans to hold events to educate the public on the importance of these gardens. Landscaping is done by Mellar Landscaping and maintenance of the garden will be done by the City of Friendswood and Keep Friendswood Beautiful in coordination with a number of local garden groups. For information on how to support our garden please contact the Parks and Recreation Department.

Grant Incentive Program The Grant Incentive Program is a partnership between Keep Friendswood Beautiful (KFB), the City of Friendswood, and Friendswood businesses or Home Owner Associations, to initiate landscape improvement projects within the city for over all quality of life and beautification of the city. KFB supplies reimbursement for a landscape improvement project (not to exceed $2,000) and the business matches the contribution with cash or in-kind donations, such as local resources of volunteer labor, donated materials, professional services, etc. The grants will be awarded on a 50/50 basis, with a maximum KFB participation of $2,000 on any one project.

Figgy The most important member of Keep Friendswood Beautiful is Figgy, the eco-friendly squirrel. Figgy was born in 2012 and is now the face of KFB. Our furry friend attends all of the KFB educational programs and helps spread the word about the 3 R’s “Recycle, Reduce, Reuse”. If you see Figgy around the city, be sure to give a high five to show your support of the Keep Friendswood Beautiful mission.

Educational Programs This 30-45 minute presentation is to help expose students to ways to take care of Friendswood by recycling, saving water, conserving energy, keeping the air clean, reusing items, and preventing litter. The program provides a Keep Friendswood Beautiful pencil, a Figgy activity book, and an exclusive Figgy appearance. Presentations can be made to schools, scout troops, and day cares. This program can be made to fit any age. If you are interested in having a presentation contact Parks & Recreation at rec@friendswood.com. 2019 • PARKS AND RECREATION | 33
