There Are Downsides to Downpours

Report hazards to your utility provider or by calling 9-1-1

While we’re all hoping for a strong rainy season, it has been a few years since we’ve had to deal with a series of heavy storms. If this is the year (fingers crossed), then here are some tips to remember: Treat a dark traffic signal as an all-way stop during power outages—it’s the law! Do not attempt to drive through standing water; if you can’t see the curb, it’s probably too deep to drive through. Keep storm drains free of leaves and debris during rains, and put leaves and other yard debris in your green waste container. Call City Waste Services at 635-2500 for additional containers, if necessary. If your property has a history of flooding, purchase sand and sandbags at a hardware or home improvement store—before the storm hits. Be prepared for the worst, as only a limited number of sandbags may be available at City distribution sites in anticipation of heavy rainfall and severe, widespread flooding.

Elk Grove is home to a variety of gyms and fitness studios, offering everything from CrossFit to “Zumba.”® If joining a gym or paying for classes isn’t in your budget, check out these options: Use the Cosumnes CSD’s Park Search Tool at www.yourcsd.com to find locations of the 12 CSD parks offering FREE use of adult fitness equipment. Go from couch to 5K—start your training on the City’s 5K and 10K training routes marked along Franklin, Laguna, and Elk Grove Creeks. Hit the trail! With more than 28 miles of local bike trails, there are several places to get a ride in. Download the Citywide Bike Map at elkgrovecity.org or pick one up at City Hall or your local library. Look for more events in future issues and online!

Call the City’s maintenance hotline at 687-3005 to report flooding, high creek levels, fallen trees or limbs, clogged storm drains or culverts, malfunctioning traffic signals or street lights, and downed traffic signs. Stay away from downed or sagging power lines, streetlights, or traffic signals, and any debris that might be entangled with them—they could be deadly! Call your utility provider or 9-1-1 to report downed power lines or natural gas leaks. PG&E Community Pipeline Safety Initiative: Improving Emergency Access for First Responders Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) is working with customers and the City of Elk Grove to help ensure first responders have immediate access to natural gas transmission pipelines in case of an emergency. This important safety work involves reviewing structures, trees, and brush located near the gas pipeline that could block emergency access for first responders or damage the pipeline. For any tree or structure that needs to be replaced for safety reasons, PG&E will work with the property owner to develop a plan that protects public safety while preserving the character and natural beauty of the area. PG&E will be meeting with local residents and organizations so that the community is well informed before any work takes place. In the meantime, if you have any questions or would like more information about the planned safety work in Elk Grove, please contact PG&E’s local customer outreach specialist Alison Feliz at 216-7482 or AXFV@pge.com. Additional information on the Community Pipeline Safety Initiative, as well as other PG&E gas safety efforts, can also be found at pge.com/GasSafety.
