WELCOME

W

hen I started City Kids Magazine, I never imagined that a few years down the line, I’d be interviewing a member of Girls Aloud. But, here we are, celebrating the launch of Kimba Kids by Kimberley Walsh, one of life’s lovely people, as it happens. Popstars:

The Rivals seems like a galaxy away but Walsh is as approachable as they come. Find out about her new fashion range and her entrepreneurial school days on p50. Of course, schools are central to our Autumn issue and in our Schools Supplement (p19) we reflect on meditation and whether it has a place in the curriculum. One West London school has been pressing ‘pause’ during the school day for years. Turn to p21 to discover the impact it’s had. Loud fanfare for our next item – the City Kids School Food Awards. We’re celebrating all the hard work that goes into planning healthy and nutritious school meals, sometimes with very small budgets. We have a great panel of judges who we will be revealing over the coming months, so head to our website to find out how your school can get involved: www.citykidsmagazine.co.uk. As usual, we’ve handpicked events and activities for the whole family to enjoy, and we

T

rust. It’s a little word with a big meaning. Trust underpins so much of life: being in a loving relationship; feeling respected as an employee; being allowed to scan your own groceries without nicking those gallingly expensive strawberries… But the importance of trust becomes almost overwhelming when you’re pregnant. You skip happily into the GP and their nonchalance at your news leaves you questioning whether they really understand what you’re going through. They may automatically sign you up for a hospital but then a friend tells you there is an alternative and you question why that wasn’t offered to you. Every midwife (and you see A LOT) offers conflicting advice. It makes your head spin: every fibre of your body wants what is best for your baby but who the hell do you trust?! So you turn to the internet where chat rooms offer another 30,000 pieces of advice, none of which can truly reveal the personal and potentially traumatic journeys behind each sobering snippet and suggestion. This minefield of uncertainty was the very reason midwife Pam Wild and I started The Happy Birth Club – bangup-to-date, evidence-based education and the continuity of care from an independent midwife with your best interests at heart. But at the centre of what we do is encouraging the fabulously rotund women that we meet to trust the most important person of all: themselves. In 2018 this is not easy. A whole commercial industry has been built on women’s increasing lack of faith in their body’s innate ability to cope with birth and a new baby. The screen in our hand has done a cracking job of stopping us listening to our own inherent wisdom – if you sit quietly and look in your heart, rather than

TRUST your browser, the chances are, you may just find what you need. Not always. But probably more than you expect. It’s no surprise, of course, that we lose trust in ourselves as soon as folk know we’re up the duff. All too often, pregnant women and their partners are patronised and infantilised by a onesize-fits-all health system and the cultural conditioning that a name badge and a white coat denotes omniscience. I bow down in admiration to anyone who has studied medicine and become capable of saving lives. But pregnancy is not an illness and every woman is an individual with a unique set of circumstances and needs. Unless you are equipped to navigate the system; understand your options; be unafraid to politely question the medics and decide what is right for you and your baby, it is all to easy to blindly trust professionals who have sadly not had the time to get to know you. In the absence of continuity-of-carer, trusting the combined knowledge of you and your partner can be absolutely critical to a happy outcome. A member of our Happy Birth Club recently went into hospital when she noticed reduced foetal movement on her 40-week due date. She was examined, all was found to be absolutely fine and,

... be unafraid to politely question the medics and decide what is right for you and your baby, it is all to easy to blindly trust professionals who have sadly not had the time to get to know you.

relieved, she prepared to go home. At this point she was told, “You can have a fast, medium or slow induction.” She looked askance and asked, “How about no induction?” Thus ensued six hours of negotiations with three different doctors, each impressing upon her that if she was not induced she was risking the life of her baby. Only the very well-informed could resist under such circumstances. Fortunately, she could keep calm and phone Pam – the trusted midwife whom she had got to know via our course – and slowly talk through her options. She asked the hospital if she could be scanned and was told there was no scanner. She stood her ground – with a smile. The scanner was wheeled round. It revealed that the baby was well; the cord working efficiently and the presence of plenty of amniotic fluid. There was not one clinical indication that induction was necessary. The doctor turned to her, “So, we think induction is your best option.” By this point, she says, sheer exasperation had set in and unfortunately, all trust in the doctors had been eroded. But she trusted her instincts (nobody has such highly tuned instincts as a pregnant woman…) and, reassuring the doctor that she would hot-foot it back at the first sign of any problem, she went home to bed. Two days later, she spontaneously laboured and had the natural water birth that she had wanted (even negotiating a three-day post-natal stay there with her partner!). But she maintains that she is not a naturally assertive person. She’d begun pregnancy thinking it was something that doctors did to women. But she’d listened. She’d learnt what to ask. She’d learnt that she always had options. And she’d learnt to take control during her time with us. And she started parenthood with immense faith in herself – which is a gift that every mother is entitled to.

FOOD BY JO PRATT

AFTER SCHOOL

BARS

I’m hungry, have you got anything to eat?” That’s what I hear nearly every day at school pick up – and not just from my own children. I’m sure we’ve all been there - quickly grabbing something from the ‘treat drawer’ on the way out of the house. The problem is by the time you get home they’re hungry again. So you hear yourself say (again) that you must find a healthier snack to give to them that will satisfy their hunger for longer. With that in mind, when City Kids asked me for this issue’s recipe I thought, lets start as we mean to go on. I adapted one of my flapjack recipes and a healthy granola recipe to create these fruity, oaty bars that are packed with slow release energy from the oats and dried fruits. They are much lower in fat than traditional flapjacks, refined sugar-free, can be made without nuts (so kids can have them at break time too), and better still get the thumbs up from my two children who can be very fussy at times. Enjoy!

MAKES 8 bars TAKES 40 minutes 100g porridge oats 1 tsp ground cinnamon 225g pitted dates 75g honey or agave syrup 100g tahini (sesame seed paste) or coconut oil if allergic finely grated zest ½ orange 40g pumpkin or sunflower seeds (or a mixture of the two) 75g dried fruit (i.e. cranberries, cherries, raisins, sultanas, chopped apricot)

• Heat the oven to 200°C/180C fan or gas 4. Line a 20cm x 20cm square cake tin with greaseproof paper or baking parchment. • Mix together the oats and cinnamon. Spread onto a baking tray and toast the oats in the oven for 10 minutes, shaking the pan halfway through so they evenly toasted. Remove from the oven and tip the oats into a bowl. • Put the dates in a food processor and blend until they form a sticky paste. Transfer to the bowl with the oats. Add the seeds and dried fruit.

• Heat the honey or agave syrup, tahini and orange zest in a saucepan until hot but not boiling. Pour into the bowl and mix everything together. • Transfer to the prepared tin and bake in the oven for 20 minutes until the top is golden. • Leave to cool in the tin for 10 minutes before turning out and cooling completely. Cut into eight rectangle bars and store for up to two weeks in an airtight container.

PAUSE FOR THOUGHT

One school’s use of meditation in the classroom St James Junior School

FEATURE

“

The pause stops things running into each other and reminds us all of the stillness which is beyond the activity, noise and stresses of the day.

PAUSE

FOR THOUGHT The popularity of mindfulness and meditation in schools has increased significantly in the last few years. But one school in West London has been ahead of the curve. VICTORIA EVANS asked CATHERINE THOMLINSON, Headmistress at St James Junior School, to explain.

What is the difference between the pauses you practise and mindfulness? Our understanding is that mindfulness, sati, is a practice derived from Buddhism. The pause, with its distinctive Sanskrit dedication, is more connected to classical yoga, although it is not unrelated to mindfulness. Classical yoga is a series of

exercises designed to sharpen the mind for the single pointed attention necessary for meditation. Pausing has a dedication at the beginning and end, as a reminder of unity and being our best selves. The dedication is a moment of acknowledgement of the inner supreme self. Explain how it works during the school day. We pause at the beginning and end of every lesson and periods such as Assembly and lunch. The pause stops things running into each other and reminds us all of the stillness which is beyond the activity, noise and stresses of

the day. We also practise a longer version of the pause, the long pause, during the weekly philosophy lesson. Why do it? It is useful to train our minds in onepointed attention. Pausing at the beginning and end of every lesson allows the children to refocus and be ready for what is to come. It’s also a chance to start again, for some, particularly if the previous lesson has presented challenges. It is great for more chaotic lessons as it brings everyone back to a stillness and allows the children a moment of calm before moving on. It is an invaluable skill to practise anywhere at any time, to let yourself become calm and still, refocussing attention and continuing the day with a new energy.

What effect does it have on children and staff? It allows everyone an opportunity to connect together and unite in silence and stillness. It is a chance to approach every lesson as if it is a clean slate, connect to each new activity and be really present for each start. There is tremendous power in being unified as a class and school. FEATURE Equally, it disciplines us to be able to let everything go and truly be ourselves. Effectively, it unifies and brings focus and stillness, improves discipline and trains the mind.

What would you say to anyone who said it was mumbo-jumbo? From the staff:

Do you find that all children settle into the practice quite easily? Yes. It’s a very natural, easy thing for children to do, it’s uncomplicated. Some children find it hard to close their eyes at first, but that’s okay. Occasionally, some find it easier than others to be still and not allow their curiosity to get the better of them. However, all groups of children can experience a greater awareness of themselves. Without prompting, the children often mention that they love pausing.

“I’d say, go and visit any yoga studio in London or watch the film, ‘Yoga, the Architecture of Peace,’ on Netflix, and they would see that our approach is virtually identical.”

Can pupils opt not to take part? Yes. But in our experience, they don’t want to opt out, they love it.

“Try it. It works.”

“There’s nothing weird about getting children to be quiet and focussed and it may be good training for when they’re adults.” “It brings stillness, steadiness and connection to something deep within us. Otherwise, what do we resort to in times of stress and agitation?” “No more mumbo-jumbo than yoga, tai chi or mindfulness.”

Would you say there is a link between pauses and academic success? We believe it is immeasurable. However, this would be a useful correlation to test in research. It may be difficult to prove, but surely creating space in the day to reflect and fall still can only aid clarity of mind and therefore mental agility. Equally, this raises the idea that less stress allows children to access what they know. However, as one staff member commented, “I believe there is a link between the ability to fall still and connecting, which enables people to follow their own star – which I would say leads to personal success.” Arguably, the pause is more a connection with emotional readiness, which in the end may affect academic success. EDUCATION NEWS OUTSTANDING YEAR FOR KENSINGTON WADE Kensington Wade Prep School, which opened in September 2017, has been rated outstanding by Ofsted, who also described it as ‘unique and inspirational’. The school is the first of its kind – an English/Chinese dual language immersion school where children spend half of their day in an English classroom and half in a Chinese classroom. It’s worth noting that many of the children do not come from Chinese-speaking families, yet their progress was described by inspectors as excellent. For more details contact

NEW ICT SUITE FOR FALCONS PRE-PREP Pupils at The Falcons Pre-Preparatory School for Boys in Chiswick will be excited to hear about their new dedicated ICT suite. The facility provides boys with additional stateof-the-art technology, including brand new Surface Book Pros. Through dedicated and integrated computing lessons, the boys will learn the skills to navigate and problem-solve while using both familiar and unfamiliar programs. The school believes that the new tech helps it to embrace the evolution of traditional classroom teaching. The next open day is Saturday 29th September.

ACADEMIC & PERFORMANCE TALENT ArtsEd, in Chiswick, is more than a performing arts school. At the Day School and Sixth form, pupils immerse themselves in high-calibre academic study whilst developing their talent and personal passion for the performing arts. Outstanding results are the norm: 2017 saw the best BTEC results in the @ Dance Show 2018 country with 99% D*/D/D, and 77% A*- B at A level, maintaining ArtsEd’s position as the most academically successful vocational performing arts sixth form in the UK. It has also been listed as one of the top five schools and colleges in the UK, and one of the top 40 in Europe by international think-tank BE OPEN Foundation. Open Evenings involve a tour as well as dazzling performances from current pupils. 395g (14oz) can sweetened condensed milk 10g (1 tbsp) cornflour / corn starch 45ml (3 tbsp) chocolate syrup INSTRUCTIONS 1. Pour the milk into the saucepan and heat on a low heat. 2.

Slowly stir the cornflour into the warm milk. Continue heating and stirring over a low heat for 20 minutes or until the mixture thickens.

3.

Remove from the heat and stir in the chocolate syrup.

4.

Place in a sandwich bag and refrigerate.

5.

Once cold, roll and squeeze into any slimy shape you want - and watch it flow!

SCIENTIFIC PRINCIPLE Viscosity TIME 45 minutes cooking time, 2 hours cooling time INTRODUCTION This slime flows like a liquid but can be rolled like a solid - and the best part is that it’s edible!

THE SCIENCE BEHIND EDIBLE SLIME Cornflour or corn starch is a starch made up of long chains of sugar molecules called glucose, which are joined together in a coiled up ball. When exposed to heat and milk, the starch particles absorb water from the milk, causing them to swell. These swollen particles start to press up against each other. This reduces the movement of the liquid, resulting in it thickening or becoming more viscous. Eventually, the starch particles burst, freeing up long strands of starch which swell further and absorb the fluid outside the particles. This traps the remaining water in the mixture and turns it into a highly viscous gel or slime. The slime flows like a thick liquid but can be rolled around like a soft solid. The advantage of this recipe is that the slime is edible once you have finished with it! Explore Further: for more on slime and other ‘recipes’ head to our site at

BOOK REVIEW

With our Autumn issue focussed on getting back into the swing of studies, we’ve chosen books to compliment and inspire learning, whatever age. by VICTORIA EVANS

PRE-SCHOOLERS

LITTLE KIDS THIS IS NOT A MATHS BOOK by Anna Weltman (Ivy Kids Books)

A PILE OF LEAVES by Jason Fulford & Tamara Shopsin (Phaidon) The third in a series of groundbreaking books from the authorartists Tamara Shopsin and Jason Fulford created in partnership with the Whitney Museum of American Art. This clever book of collage features see-through acetate pages with beautiful autumnal elements, playfully designed to invite young readers to dig through a pile of leaves and uncover the surprises throughout. The clever design also presents the opportunity for children to add their own images between the book’s clear pages.

Discover how maths can be artistic and art can be mathematical with this awesome activity book, full of fun drawing challenges with a mathematical basis. Amazing patterns with a mathematical essence will be revealed as you follow the simple activity instructions. Learn incredible maths facts as you draw the beautiful designs.

A YEAR IN NATURE A CAROUSEL BOOK OF THE SEASONS by Hazel Maskell, illustrated by Eleanor Taylor (Laurence King)

ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING: A HISTORY OF EARTH, DINOSAURS, RULERS, ROBOTS AND OTHER THINGS TOO NUMEROUS TO MENTION

This is a fascinating introduction to the seasons, following a family of foxes through the year. The book opens out into a stunning four-part carousel, revealing intricately detailed pop-up scenes of spring, summer, autumn and winter. Follow the boxes as the tiny cubs grow up through the year, and explore the woodland scenes to discover animals, trees, plants and owners.

(October 2018, What on Earth? Books) An up-to-date history of the world covering topics from dinosaurs to robots and everything in-between. Jam-packed with illustrations, photos, timelines and a glossary, index and reference material, Jacqueline Wilson calls it ‘absolutely amazing’ and it gets the thumbs up from Horrible Histories author Martin Brown: ‘from the Big Bang to yesterday’s breakfast, this BOOK OF FUN AND DISCOVERY makes sense of it all’.

BIG KIDS LEARNING TO LEARN – A GUIDE FOR KIDS AND TEENS Barbara Oakley PhD & Terrence Sejnowski PhD with Alistair McConville (TarcherPerigee Trade Paperback) If you can remember your least favourite subject at school, it’s probably the one that you also found most difficult. This book aims to teach kids to train their brains to learn the hard stuff, instead of just assuming they can’t do it. One of the book’s authors and a professor of engineering, Dr Barbara Oakley, struggled with maths at school, until she learned how to learn. An accessible book for kids, we have an extract over on our website for you to see more: www.citykidsmagazine.co.uk 36 CITYKIDSMAGAZINE.CO.UK

DESIGN FOR CHILDREN PLAY, RIDE, LEARN, EAT, CREATE, SIT, SLEEP by Kimberlie Birks (October 2018, Phaidon) This is a book for older, design-savvy and style-conscious kids or those interested in product, lighting and furniture design. It showcases work by contemporary superstars such as Marcel Breuer, Jean Prouvé, Nanna Ditzel, Philippe Starck, Nendo, Marc Newson, Donna Wilson, Kengo Kuma, and Marcel Wanders. It also pays tribute to those who have shaped children’s design and pioneered products for kids.

he appeal of monochromatic decor in children’s interiors shows no sign of waning but how about adding an eclectic boho vibe into the mix to take it to another level? A mural wallpaper featuring elegant French panelling creates a stunning backdrop for this sculptural cot bed and matching changing table. A Berber rug will create softness underfoot and anchor the furniture in the room. This feather pendant not only looks beautiful but will add softly diffused light while the white pom pom fairy lights add a little magic. Vibrant colour will enliven any room and these delightful animal prints, with their neon paint elements, create a charming focus. The mono decoration continues with metal shelves, a Moroccan pouf and pom pom cushion with finishing touches of gold, work their brilliance within the scheme. 1 French Panels Mural £33.00 per sqm www.funkylittledarlings.co.uk 2 Nobodinoz Feather Garland £27.95 www.scandiborn.co.uk 3 Eos Feather Pendant Light from £69.00 www.funkylittledarlings.co.uk 4 Odette Swan Head With Wings £119.00 www.funkylittledarlings.co.uk 5 Pineapple Wall Hooks from £9.95 www.bombayduck.com 6 Stripe Storage Bag £55.00 www.wildfireteepees.com 7 Art Prints £55.00 each www.funkylittledarlings.co.uk 8 Babou Wall Mounted Shelf £79.00 www.nubie.co.uk 9 Sebra Changing Table £599.00 www.cuckooland.com

WALKING NETBALL If you’re spending a lot of time at High Fives watching your daughter, you might start thinking about playing yourself. At Will to Win, you can get involved in one of their weekly netball training sessions, or if you are new to the game, or concerned you don’t have the fitness levels, you could try Walking Netball. It’s an initiative from England Netball aimed at increasing participation amongst women who may have given up on the sport, or have suffered an injury or who want to enjoy a regular, social activity. Kathryn Riley who runs Will to Win, alongside herhusband, set up netball sessions for women on Thursday mornings four years ago. “The appeal lies in women of all ages, shapes, sizes and fitness levels playing together and having fun,” she says, “We employ fully-qualified coaches to take drills as well as oversee games.” Our very own Beverley Turner plays regularly at Chiswick House, and has written a brilliant account about the experience over on our blog page:

www.citykidsmagazine.co.uk/guestblog For more information about netball sessions across London for women and children, please visit www.willtowin.co.uk

FREE FOOTBALL! Over the summer, Arsenal’s insurance partner Cover-More joined forces with Foxes FC and coaches from the Gunners to offer free soccer skills for children in West London. Over 50 children enjoyed developing their agility, control and speed through a series of fun drills and games. It was Cover-More’s first Skills School, with more planned in the future. PURPLE DRAGON Premium family member’s club Purple Dragon in Putney is launching a drop-off youth club for eight to thirteen year olds. It will run on Friday and Saturday nights between 6.30pm and 9pm. The idea is to create a fun environment for big kids, away from screens, while parents also get some child-free evening time. Founder and CEO, Sharai Meyers says, “It can be tough to give slightly older kids independence and freedom in town. We’re 10 this year and it feels like a really natural step for us to be able to continue to provide a fun, enriching environment for older kids.” Activities planned include Nerf battles, karaoke competitions, movie nights and scavenger hunts. The PD Youth Club costs £500 per year, and meals on site can be pre-ordered.

WHO IS? KIMBERLEY WALSH PEOPLE

GIRL BAND MEMBER, ACTOR, WEST END STAR AND NOW FASHION DESIGNER. VICTORIA EVANS MEETS THE MULTI-TALENTED MOTHER OF TWO TO CELEBRATE THE LAUNCH OF KIMBA KIDS.

W

hat’s the inspiration behind Kimba Kids? With Bobby, my oldest son, I just found it really boring buying boys’ clothes. He’s a blonde, blue-eyed mixed-race little boy and I want him to be able to express himself a bit more and wear things that are a bit more fun and colourful. So I approached my brother [the MD of a clothing company] and said, “How do you feel about trying to launch a new brand with me, basically so that we can use all your facilities to do so?” And he was actually really up for it! So what are your favourite pieces? For me, my favourite piece for the boys is a camo sweater with the K on the front, and shapewise our sweats will always be central. As we knew this was going into Autumn/Winter we wanted to do a slightly different tone so we’ve got an aubergine tone camo. And for the girls I love the twinset. What are your hopes for the brand? I’m realistic. I don’t know how this business works so obviously the fact that Next have endorsed it as big as they have gives us hope that it will work. How would you describe your parenting style? Manic! I’m such a calm person. I genuinely think I’m one of the most chilled people. But my boys can drive me to places that I never thought were possible. And it frustrates me if I feel like I’ve lost it, that’s just not me. I feel like a lot of the time I look at myself in day to day situations and think what would anybody think if they could see me now, but is that just parenting two young boys? What advice would you pass on to a new mum? Every mum thinks they have to be the 50 CITYKIDSMAGAZINE.CO.UK

perfect parent and everything should be as the books say. Don’t put too much pressure on yourself to be perfect because I don’t think any of us are. We all lose our [shit] every so often, don’t we? Three words to describe yourself. All good things of course! Relaxed, warm and tired. Always tired. Last book you read? I don’t read, but I did read Giovanna Fletcher’s baby book ages ago. I was reading it and thinking, I’m reading about my own life - that’s why she’s so popular, because she’s so honest. All the breastfeeding stuff - I had a really hard time of it as well. Nobody tells you, even my own sister never really talked about it very much. I think that the more we talk about it, the better. You think that they’re supposed to latch on and it’s all lovely. I’ve never felt pain like it. Tell us one thing nobody knows about you. I used to make my own clothes and sell them to my friends. I used to put scrunchies on a big tube and take them to school and sell them. I was a right Del Boy even then! Who inspires you? It’s a cheesy thing to say but my mum really does. I’ve got a new found respect for her since having children and trying to work with the kids. She had four and she was on her own because my parents split up when I was really young. She always worked full-time, she always did extra things after school like piano lessons for people to make extra money. I don’t know how she did all of that with the addition of financial worry and no partner to support her. So when I get stressed or think that life’s getting a bit tough, I think, Come on, think about what it was like for your mum.

What’s next on your list of things to do? I’ve been really lucky, I even got to do Strictly. There’s nothing really left that I desperately want to do. To be honest, if Kimba Kids works the way we hope it will, it will be a much bigger focus for me over the next year. What are your memories of school? I actually liked school from a social point of view. Because I was relatively clever but not expected to do amazingly well, I think you can enjoy school a bit more. You get grades that people are happy with, but you can also socialise without feeling too much pressure. What would you take to a desert island? My kids, although it would be tempting not to! In reality, I can’t actually bear to be away from them for too long so they’d have to come, and my husband for help with the childcare. And music because I could keep them entertained and I can’t not be around music. And alcohol to get me through.
