It’s filled with information on local schooling and most importantly for those stuck in the 11+ mire, there’s advice and comments from parents who went through the process earlier this year. We also take a look at the increasingly popular option to educate out of town, either at commuter-distance schools or boarding. It’s a trend that’s growing as more schools in the home counties put on buses to take children to and from West London. If you’re looking for some awesome fun and games for your children during the October half-term, we’re running our Adventure Club from 23rd-27th October. It will be extra spook-tacular in the lead up to Halloween. As well as getting stuck in with the traditional games such as tug of war, mini Olympics, rocket launching and water bomb catapulting, the children will also get the chance to dress up as mummies, go on skeleton scavenger hunts and play Dracula’s Footsteps. A mad scientist will help with some creepy experiments to make green slime! As well as being treated to some whacky and wild fun and high energy running around games, it’s a great opportunity for children to learn new skills with some gentle encouragement from the ‘friendly big brother/sister’ team. They also step out of their comfort zone (when they’re ready) through many of the fun games on offer and even the shy ones usually come out of their shell after a couple of games. We like to think we are masterminds behind social interaction, encouragement and helping with independence. If you can’t wait for October you can try making your own mini Adventure Club at home with some of our easy DIY games.

Extreme Boules

Children have to travel across the room without touching the ground. They can start on the bed and use anything they see to make it to the door. Books, pants and pillows are all essential tools in this game as they help provide stepping stones. The floor is a lake with swimming crocodiles so the tidier the room, the harder it is to complete!

You’ll need two boules (these can be tennis balls, normal boules or shoes!) and a jack (this is the thing you aim for with the boules, so you can use a golf ball, shell or anything smaller than your boules). The youngest player draws a throw line and chucks the jack anywhere they like the more imaginative the better. Uphill, downhill or behind a rock. Each player then takes it in turns to throw a boule towards the jack. The boule that finishes closest to the jack wins, and that player gets a point. The winner also becomes the person to choose the throw line and throw the jack for the next round. It’s a great confidence building game as each child has a chance to lead. These at-home activities are so simple and take no time to set up but provide lots of fun! The October Adventure Club is suitable for children between 5-10 years old and runs from 9am-4pm. Mystery Mouldy Modelling For the clay: 2 cups plain flour 1 cup salt 2 tablespoons cream of tartar 2 tablespoons oil 2 cups water 1 teaspoon colouring Mix all the ingredients together in a saucepan over a low heat (with adult supervision) and keep stirring until the mixture goes smooth and forms a dough. When cool, start playing. For this game, get a grown-up to write down lots of objects on pieces of paper, scrunch them up and put them into a pot or hat. Each player picks a piece of paper and has 60 seconds to create the object with the modelling clay they made earlier. Whoever guesses correctly, becomes the next sculptor.

NEW CLASSMATES We ante-natal educators can kid ourselves into thinking we pass on great wisdom, proffer choice and empower couples on their journey to parenthood. But, really, we’re just Tinder for pregnant people: hooking up wide-eyed, big-bellied neighbours to make the road ahead less treacherous. And, as these relationships don’t involve the messy and complicated business of sex, it’s so much more straightforward. Of course, there’s some of that knowledge stuff, too – no matter how much we might want to gossip about TV, we do have to fill those hours together with a few facts.

won’t dilate efficiently. Your new-found-mummy-mates are unlikely to care if your pram isn’t the latest model. You’re all traversing the same hurdles at the same time, getting by on your wits and wisdom, laughing at poo stories and rolling your eyes at your partners. Strange, mystical connections are made between pregnant women who take that road simultaneously. We once had a course, which, due to a few unusual last-minute drop-offs, consisted of only three couples. I was worried. This wasn’t the tribe they’d expected to meet. I apologised, explained and promised to work hard to make sure they met a wider circle of local mums to fill the gaps. But, they bonded. They shared and laughed. It turned out that all three lived within a five-minute walk of each other. Miraculously, they all gave birth on the very same day – two in the same hospital. They recently celebrated their babies second birthdays in matching t-shirts, and with a cake smash. There they were, three grinning toddlers, covered in chocolate cake and no idea that they, too, had friends for life; friends they’d made before they were born. How many of us can say that about our besties? New-buggy-buddies won’t only support you in the lonely and testing hours of new parenthood. These women come with a ready-made friend for your child, and it’s amazing how soon babies love the sight of another tiny person. Plus, it takes the pressure off in the long-term. As a parent, agonising about your child’s friendships once they start school is a hardy perennial. If they’ve already got a close-knit group from babyhood, you really won’t care (as much). So, seek out other big bellies when you’re waddling down the high street. Join ante-natal classes and pregnancy groups. You may think you’ll never hit it off with the woman in the kaftan, but once you’re drinking tea in her garden as the toddlers hit each other over the head with Lego, you’ll wonder how you ever lived without her.

Regardless of income or profession, the bond forged in the trenches of new parenthood is profound. But, long after a detailed understanding of epidurals has faded, what’s left is one of the great and often under-appreciated gifts of parenthood: friends-like-you. And that’s exactly what they become. No matter how strongly you feel – as you take your seat for the first class – thinking you have absolutely nothing in common with these boring/self-righteous/arrogant/rude/ annoying (delete as appropriate) people, you will, after a short period of time, develop solid friendships based on sharing life’s most significant event. That woman who liked the sound of her own voice a bit much? She’s the one who will talk to you at 3 am, when you’re weeping with fatigue and sore boobs, and you’ll thank the heavens that she gets it. The dad-to-be, the one who arrived a touch sozzled each week and made a few inappropriate nipple jokes, will be the one who takes your hubby out for an energy-restoring pint and a laugh when he feels like he’s failing at this dad lark after six weeks. And you will love him for that. Regardless of income or profession, the bond forged in the trenches of new parenthood is profound. It is almost entirely unheard of these days to make friends with other people who may be different to you, or outside of your small social circle. You sit blinking at each other while someone like me talks about perineal massage, and know nothing of one another’s backgrounds. Some ante-natal course enquiry forms will ask for your occupation, as though being a lawyer or a fruit-packer will make a difference about your ability to push out a baby and make a good mother. It really won’t. Birth is life’s great leveller, and wonderfully egalitarian. Class has always played a part in the culture of birth (the unhelpful moniker, “too posh to push” has been taken to new levels in South America, where some hospitals have a 100% Caesarean rate amongst the wealthy). But, for most, this is irrelevant. Your bank account doesn’t care if your cervix

esigning a playroom for your little one is great fun and the chance to indulge your playful side. You may be lucky enough to dedicate a whole room to your children, but don’t let this deter you if space is at a premium. Children don’t care where they play, be it a recess under the stairs or a section off the kitchen. A play area allows for safe play and space to spark their creative imagination. Essentials are storage, workspace, flexible seating and colour. A stylised tree wallpaper defines this space with a quirky bookshelf and a desk to work at. Ensure the room is well lit with a mix of imaginative lights and seating that can move around to accommodate friends. For there, in those frenetic few minutes at the start and end of the school day, the entire gamut of human behaviour is on show. Nowhere is this more concentrated than in London, where catchment areas are reduced to mere metres and journeys are not bound by one particular means of transport, but by exaggerated time pressures. The school run has become the stuff of lore, of horror tales of Chelsea tractors and the ensuing parking tickets, of idling, pollutant limousine engines, of fashion parades, of cat fights and even punch

School drop-off and pick-up offers a chance to observe humankind in all its flawed perfection, says SOPHIE CLOWES bountiful mix of culture, colour, creed and language that comes with living in one of the world’s coolest capitals creates a daily artwork that uplifts and inspires. On World Book Day, Comic Relief or any other dress-up day, the streets around schools bring literature to life. The children aren’t hidden in cars and their outfits make our city world smile. For the most part, on any given day, the responsible

The playground is an ever-evolving reflection of daily life. ups, of intimidation and bitchy oneup(wo)manship. Apocryphal or not, these stories belong, for the most part, among a tiny percentage of the super wealthy, or, in the forgotten days, pre-social media, when the tabloids played sole arbiter and provocateur on all matters parental or familial. The bigger picture shows us as fickle and fallible, fighting for flexibility to keep the show on the road; each family searching through trial and error for the best way forward. We are all plastering over the cracks and, for the most part, have to fake it to make it. Let’s leave the school-run stereotypical mocking behind and, in the spirit of new school beginnings, delight in school-run joy. This, people, is where friendships are formed, life problems are resolved and opportunities are offered. The primary school playground at school drop-off and pick-up is a smorgasbord of humankind in all its flawed brilliance. The

adult is like a book character too, often the witch in Room on the Broom, precariously balancing themselves, children, a dog and an art project on a bicycle. The dogs... There is a moment when the youngest child gets to Key Stage 2 and it becomes apparent that there will be no more babies. This is when children plead for a dog and parents acquiesce. City canines aren’t cosseted in cars, but tied to the school railings, sharing the love. The playground is an ever-evolving reflection of daily life. No longer a female reserve, thankfully. It is a bustling junction where fathers and mothers, grandparents, siblings and carers meet. Enjoy it while you can for soon your children will not be seen dead with you anywhere near the school gate. When that moment comes, take a leaf out of a father of four, David Beckham’s, book. Brooklyn asked him to drop him around the corner from the school gate. He duly did, then waited till his son had hooked up with his mates, drove slowly past, put the window down and shouted, ‘I love you, Brooklyn’. Even the world’s coolest people are an embarrassment to their children.

3D PRINTER WORKSHOP RETURNS TO ISL LONDON ISL London is aiming to be the first school in the UK to have a 3D printing studio created wholly for students by students. It comes after a successful workshop in the summer term which saw Grade 6 to 8 students introduced to the BuiltEd run session ‘How to build a 3D Printer’. The club gives children the opportunity to assemble a 3D printer from scratch and to learn the full capabilities of 3D printing for future projects. ‘The children assembled every part themselves and the look in their eyes when they saw it actually working is what made it all worth it’, says Naia Borio, in charge of running the club. NAVIGATING THE 11+

Advice from those who have just emerged on the other side by VICTORIA EVANS

f you’ve decided to go private for secondary school, by the time your child reaches Year 5 you’ll be contemplating the start line of the 11+ marathon. Having just been through the process myself, I decided that those Year 5 parents, as well as those closing in on application deadlines in November, might want to hear what it was REALLY like, straight from the horse’s mouth. I’ve spoken to parents to gather their perspective on the process, and how they think it could be improved, in addition to bleeding them dry of proper, useful advice and the lowdown on some of London’s most sought-after educational establishments. I think it’s worth noting that the parents I spoke to have children in a range of schools: Putney High, Harrodian, Latymer Upper, Francis Holland, Arts Ed, Ibstock Place and Kew House. So, you will be getting a decent overview.

THE PROCESS General feedback from the parents I spoke to was that the process is ‘pretty awful’, ‘tough on parents and children’, ‘frustrating’ and ‘a bit like childbirth – you eventually forget the worst bits!’ One parent told me that their new head teacher recently congratulated the parents and pupils for having made it through the 11+ process in West London, begging the question of whether it is better dealt with out of town (more on that in our Schools Out piece, p29). One thing is certain, it’s a competitive business and applying for only one school would be foolhardy. Spreading your bets and applying for eight schools is equally daft. It just adds stress and is exhausting for your child (and really, are there eight schools you really love?). Be grown up and make some decisions! The schools don’t exactly discourage applications; as one parent put it, ‘they can make serious money from the registrations, so they’re not going to turn people away!’ Emmanuel School in Clapham is the only one we

Pupils at St Benedict’s know of that caps applications each year. Beware, the cut-off is getting earlier and earlier. Blink, and you’ll miss it. And don’t rely on other parents to let you know – its every man and woman for themselves in this game. Part of the process involves creating a shortlist. Be prepared for some schools to host open evenings that are like ‘bunfights’, where numbers aren’t controlled, resulting in some parents not being able to get a good feel for the school. Others are ticketed, so you need to book well in advance or you won’t get a look-in. Try to get to as many open days and evenings as you can, even though it becomes a drag in the final stages. It will give you the opportunity to form a better opinion about what is important to you: single-sex, city, out of town, sporty, musical, all-rounder, religious. Once the choices are made, be prepared for the interview. Some schools only interview candidates that reach a certain exam standard, but most will interview all pupils who apply, sometimes before the exam. Recent questions included: • Tell me how a Fitbit works? • Describe this object – to this day, I still dont know what it was my daughter was asked to describe. CITYKIDSMAGAZINE.CO.UK 25

• What is time? • Rank the schools you have applied to in order from favourite to least favourite (yes, really, a child was asked to do this). • What was the greatest invention of the 20th century? • Who do you think should be on the new £10 note and why? • If you could be anyone for 24 hours, who would you choose & what would you do? So, now you’ve prepped the questions, you’re ready, right? Wrong. You’ve got the environment to contend with. Some schools rip your loved ones from you at some distance from the exam centre, others provide a welcoming talk, tea and biscuits while you wait. Some interviews are one-on-one with senior management, others are in groups (when, inevitably, one over-confident chatterbox talks over everyone else), and often there will be many interviews taking place in one room at the same time. And then there’s the speeddating type of interview. Oh yes, not just something for adults. The most important tip here is for you to give your child the confidence they need to be themselves. We have to trust that these schools know what they’re looking for and which child will fit in.

EDUCATION HOW COULD IT BE IMPROVED? This is a difficult one. Some of the best schools in the country happen to be within a two-mile radius of West London, so it naturally follows that it’s competitive. We all go into this with our eyes open – it’s a selective approach to education, so how is it best to select? Kew House is regarded very positively by local parents as it puts a lot of emphasis on the interview with the headmaster (who, by the way, puts nervous children at ease in seconds). The interviews are also all finished by the end of the Autumn term, meaning it’s one less thing to worry about in January. A parent I spoke to suggested that

there should be a limit to the number of schools that parents apply to. She said: ‘I think this would mean people categorised their choices better - the more academic kids would apply for the more academic schools, with maybe one fall-back, the less academic kids would apply for the middle/lower ranked (academia-wise) schools, with maybe one hopeful. This would stop the more academic kids being offered loads of places in schools they are unlikely to accept, therefore stopping so many kids having to go through the waitlisting process. It would also make the numbers applying to the schools more realistic.’ Another idea was to put co-ed

●● Get a tutor. ●● Don’t get a tutor. The debate will go on. ●● Get a folder & get organised! Buy stamps and envelopes now. Few of the schools use online applications. You’ll need photocopies of your child’s passport & passport-sized photos of him/her. The admin around applying and each exam day (whether your child needs to wear a certain sticker, take a card with them, etc) is surprisingly full-on, but you need to be calm and in-control so they don’t feel your stress as well! ●● Focus on your child and what they need from a secondary school, not what others think or which are the most popular schools of the moment. ●● Some people go completely bonkers through the process ... ignore them. ●● When you look around a school, try and look for the reason you might not want your child to go there – these schools are all excellent! ●● Try to get to as many open days and evenings as you can, even though it becomes a drag in the final stages. You will form a better opinion about what is important to you: singlesex, distance from home, journey to school, sporty, musical, all-rounder, religious. ●● Many schools host more than one open day at different times of year. When trying to narrow things down, going to a second open day is a good way to help finalise a view. You may well see a school in a very different light the second time around, especially if you only saw it once, right at the beginning of the process.

schools together, like the North London Girls’ School Consortium. So, ‘one maths and English paper is taken by each child, and these papers are considered by all schools. The mixed schools, such as Ibstock, Harrodian, Kew, Radnor House & St Benedicts, could form a West London Consortium. If they want to do their own verbal/non-verbal tests, then they can, but the main exams would be cut down considerably.’

●● Believe in your own judgement regarding your child’s potential, and be realistic about where they will get in. There’s no point putting them through the stress of a highly academic school just because you really want them to go there, when the reality is that they will probably achieve more in the long term if they went to a school that was more academically appropriate for them. ●● Listen to your child – having gone through this process twice now, both my children have been very clear about which school is their favourite, even if it may not have been my first choice. They are the ones who have to spend the next five to seven years at that school, so it’s better they make the decision with you, rather than you deciding for them. ●● Don’t cross-examine your child after each exam. Chances are, they will have made some classic errors and it’s very difficult to pretend not to care! Best not to know. ●● Be prepared for rejection. Getting offers from all their schools is for the very few. Knowing how to be positive is an important skill here. ●● If you’re on a wait-list, call the school immediately and express your 100% desire to be part of their intake in the Autumn. One headmaster joked that this is the time to send flowers and chocolates to the registrar concerned. Joking aside, begging letters, expensive gifts and stalking have been known. ●● Alternatively, take the view that if the school doesn’t want your child, you don’t want them to go there! ●● Relax, do not stress. It does work itself out in the end. Easier said than done. Take it from one who knows!

he arrival of a baby these days produces less unalloyed joy than in earlier times. Along with the multipacks of nappies come bucketfuls of stress. This is especially true of new parents in London who think wistfully of their own, often far less pressured, childhoods. They look around their chic – (or less chic) – London borough and see queues of exhaust-emitting traffic, crowded buses, unsupervised parks and schools, which are either good and oversubscribed or unacceptably poor. Not that many London schools aren’t good these days. But few have much space – especially outside. Staff turnover can be high. The best state primaries have catchment areas the size of an exercise book and good preps are highly competitive and expensive. Then there’s the pressure. Schools are expected to pack more and more into a short day. A common sight is a

They did have to sit entrance exams, but it was far less competitive than preps in London – three children for each place rather than 12! And the teaching and results are just as good.’ Schools within commuting distance see London as an excellent new market. hether you’re a full time vegetarian, or simply cutting down on the meat you and your family eat, you might find it a challenge to find recipes the whole family will enjoy eating. Well, worry not as this burger recipe will more than please meat-eaters and veggies alike. Quite often, a veggie burger is thought of as a boring, flavourless, wholesome substitute to an indulgent meaty beef burger. I’m pleased to say that this recipe is far from flavourless, and certainly shouldn’t be considered a boring substitute to a meat version. The burger has a fabulous meaty texture and holds up really well when adding numerous toppings before being sandwiched into a soft burger bun. I’ve chosen to do melting smoked cheese, sticky sweet onions, spiced mayo, gherkins and lettuce. However, just a good squirt of tomato ketchup can be just as satisfying for some. For the ultimate experience, serve your delicious veggie burgers with some homemade sweet potato fries and a crunchy coleslaw. You could also create your own American style diner and have a selection of milkshakes on the go as well. Enjoy! FENNEL AND RADISH COLESLAW TAKES 15 minutes SERVES 6-8 1 red-skinned apple, such as Braeburn or Pink Lady

50g / 2 oz natural (plain) yoghurt

1 tbsp lemon juice

2 tsp Dijon mustard

½ fennel

2 tsp cider vinegar

¼ red cabbage

1 tsp celery salt

125g / 4 ½ oz crème fraiche

flaked sea salt and freshly ground black pepper

Remove the core from the apple and cut the apple into matchstick size pieces. Put into a large bowl and toss in the lemon juice. Very finely slice or shred the fennel, cabbage, radishes and shallots either using a very sharp knife and steady hand, a mandolin or a slicer blade on a food processor. Add to the apple and toss everything together.

Flexible Vegetarian by Jo Pratt, £20 (Frances Lincoln)

SWEET POTATO FRIES TAKES 40-45 minutes SERVES 4 4 medium–large sweet potatoes 1 ½ tbsp fine polenta

olive oil flaked sea salt and freshly ground black pepper

½ tsp paprika Heat the oven to 220°C/425°F/gas 7.

Mix together the crème fraiche, yoghurt, Dijon mustard, cider vinegar and celery salt. Season with a good twist of pepper and mix thoroughly into the vegetables. Season to taste. Chill in the fridge for about 1 hour for the dressing to absorb into the vegetables a little, and for all of the flavours to combine.

Peel the potatoes and cut into long 1cm / ½ inch chip shapes. Wash well in cold water and pat dry. Tip onto a baking tray. Scatter over the polenta, paprika, pinch of salt, pepper and a decent drizzle of olive oil (enough to lightly coat the potatoes). Toss together and bake in the oven for 30–40 minutes, turning a few times throughout, until golden and crispy.

VEGGIEBURGERS with onion marmalade and harissa mayo TAKES 1 hour + 1 hour chilling SERVES 4 TO SERVE 4 brioche buns, split in half 100g /3 ½ oz sliced smoked cheddar cheese 6 tbsp mayonnaise 1-2 tsp harissa paste baby gem lettuce leaves sliced gherkins

FOR THE BURGER olive oil 250–300g / 9–10 ½ oz flat or portabella mushrooms, cut into approx. 1cm / ½ inch pieces 1 large (approx. 400g / 14 oz) aubergine (eggplant), cut into approx. 1cm / ½ inch pieces

FOOD BY JO PRATT

FOR THE ONION MARMALADE 25g / 10 oz butter 3 red onions, thinly sliced

6 cloves garlic, peeled and crushed

1 clove garlic, peeled and crushed

3 tbsp brown sauce (such as HP or Daddies)

60ml / 2 fl oz balsamic vinegar

175g /6 oz fresh breadcrumbs

2 tbsp soft dark brown sugar

1 egg 1 ½ tsp mixed dried herbs sea salt and freshly ground black pepper

To make the marmalade, melt the butter in a large saucepan. Add the sliced onions and garlic, and season well. Gently cook over a low–medium heat until the onions are deep golden and caramelised, around 20 minutes. Increase the heat and add the balsamic vinegar to deglaze the pan. Add the sugar and cook for a further 5 minutes, then season again. Cool to room temperature. To make the burgers, heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil in a large frying pan and fry the mushrooms over a high heat until coloured and any moisture has cooked away. Tip into a bowl to cool. Return the pan to the heat. Heat a further 2 tablespoons of oil and fry the aubergine until golden and tender, tossing around in the pan, to prevent it from burning. Remove from the heat and also leave to cool. Put the cooled mushrooms and aubergine into a food processor along with the garlic, brown sauce, breadcrumbs, egg and herbs. Season with salt and pepper and blend until the mixture is thoroughly mixed. Using wet hands, firmly shape into four thick burgers and put on a parchment-lined tray or plate. Chill in the fridge for 1 hour.

Heat a glug of olive oil in a frying pan. Fry the burgers over a medium–high heat for around 4 minutes each side until cooked. Heat the grill to medium–high. Halve the brioche buns and lightly toast the cut sides. At the same time, top the burgers with slices of cheese and sit under the grill until melted. Mix the mayonnaise and harissa together. Spread some onto the bottom halves of the buns, then lay on some lettuce and a spoon of onion marmalade. Sit the burger on top, add sliced gherkins and finally a dollop of harissa mayonnaise. Lightly press down with the bun lid.

Flexible

For a more traditional meat burger, sauté 1 chopped onion and 2 cloves of garlic in 25g / 1 oz butter. Leave to cool then mix with 600g / 1 lb 5 oz good-quality minced steak, 6 rashers of finely diced smoked streaky bacon, 1 beaten egg, 1 teaspoon of Dijon mustard and plenty of salt and pepper. Shape into four burgers and chill for 30 minutes. Fry in a trickle of olive oil for 3–4 minutes each side (medium) before finishing with the cheese on top under the grill. CITYKIDSMAGAZINE.CO.UK 37

AUTHOR OF DARE TO DREAM a memoir of her struggle with fertility

Describe yourself in three words Kind, control-freak, mum How did Dare to Dream come about? Initially, when Harry (drummer in McFly) and I first announced our pregnancy with Lola, I was conscious about putting the news out there. So, when Harry and I did our Hello interview, I told him how strongly I felt about being honest about how we got here. So, I spoke about IVF and miscarriages during the interview. The response I got back from women – I couldn’t believe the number of people even my own friends, who started to open up. Harry was like, ‘Izzy, I think you should write something. There’s something here.’ When I was going through my own issues, a lot of the books that I looked at were very science based. I couldn’t really find anything that spoke to me emotionally. So, the whole idea behind Dare to Dream was driven by the desire to write a book that would be a companion to other couples going through fertility struggles. I was inspired by the people reaching out to me. What’s a typical day like? I’m with Lola full time. We’re very lucky as she can hang out in her cot and play happily in the mornings. We might go to a class in the morning or meet up with a friend. She has her nap, which gives me a bit of nap time too (seven months pregnant at time of interview). We go to the local parks or Harry might take her out. My day is quite focussed around Lola and her needs. 50 CITYKIDSMAGAZINE.CO.UK

Who inspires you? My granny was a huge inspiration to me. She worked all her life, which, in her generation, wasn’t necessarily what happened. I was very close to her and was devastated when she died. Family inspires me. My brothers are all musicians, and I’m very close to my family. What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given?

My dad’s always said dignity at all times, and that does sit well with me. My dad doesn’t say much but, when he does, it counts. What would you take to a desert island? Can I take Harry? And Lola? Harry might be happy that I mentioned him first for a change! I have had my Winnie the Pooh bear ever since I was a little girl. I still can’t sleep without him, or go anywhere without him. What’s your favourite spot in London? My instant response is St Peter’s Square. I love the fact that, in a big city, there are these pockets, like Chiswick House, where you can find moments of peace and magic. What’s your biggest luxury? I’m not one for luxuries but, when we go on holiday, I like a nice hotel. I always say, ‘Go on, shall we upgrade?’ Harry is the opposite. We don’t go on holiday every year, but when we do, that’s our little luxury. Tell us one thing that people don’t know about you. I have suffered horrendously with anxiety, for most of my life. When you’re someone who goes out and performs like I did with Escala on Britain’s Got Talent, you wouldn’t think that that person would then

go off stage and have a panic attack. I don’t know if many people know that about me, but I’m sure that was the root of my problems when trying to conceive. My anxiety has become a friend. When I say I’m a control freak, being in control is my way of managing my anxiety. I find change very difficult. I do get anxious before events, but it’s such a silent thing, I don’t think anybody notices. What’s next?

The baby! I knew that I had time to write the book, so I can now focus on Lola before the baby comes. The whole thing with Dare to Dream is, I feel like it’s a long-term campaign.
