{FROM THE EDITOR} The weather outside may be frightful, but a dog by your side is delightful, so let it snow! Speaking of snow, some of you may recognize this photo of Scout. I chose it for the cover, because it embodies what this issue is all about—winter fun! Whether it’s dashing through the snow like Scout pictured here at Sleeping Lady Mountain Resort in Leavenworth, Wash., or enjoying a cozy cabin retreat with your canine companion (for more on both, turn to page 22), this issue is all about winter fun. And, what could be more fun than flipping through page after page of smiling faces? Starting on page 28, you will find all 200 canine contestants from this year’s Cover Dog Model Search including the winner, Liberty. Liberty, a great Pyrenees, was found running along the side of a highway, dragging a chain behind her, with her collar embedded in her neck. Obviously, this beautiful girl was severely neglected, but happily, she is now safe and in her forever home. We feel blessed to have her grace the cover of the next issue!

Speaking of issues, this issue is our best! By “best” I mean the best of the West as it pertains to all things dog—and that’s exactly what you will find starting on page 24. We’ve picked our favorites for 2014, from the best place for winter storm watching, to the best place to eat breakfast and pick blueberries with your best friend. In addition to the Best of the West, a great resource in this issue is our Dog’s Eye View, starting on page 18. It features a list of local pet shops and some of the locally-made products they carry, so every dollar you spend on Fido makes a difference. And, speaking of spending, starting on page 10, we’ve compiled some super cool products that would make great gifts this holiday season! Like Scout pictured here, we hope you find this winter to be packed with fun. For more ideas, be sure to check out the go-to place to find all you need to know about living in the city you love with the four-legged love of your life at citydogmagazine.com. It’s a dog lover’s online community to discover great getaways, seek advice on health and behavior, search for pet-related businesses and services, find local dog-centric events, meet fellow dog lovers and shop for unique products for pooches and people in the CityDog Shop. {bark of the town} news you can chew on

written by brandie ahlgren photos courtesy of the oregon truffle festival

Truffle hunting has gone to the dogs The use of pigs to hunt truffles is said to date back to the Roman Empire, but today, Fido is getting in on the business of bringing home these fancy fungi. In the United States, truffles only grow in Oregon and Washington, thanks to our moist, warm forests. And, particularly in Oregon, the truffle-hunting dog scene has exploded—so much so, there’s even an event dedicated to celebrating the sport.

In January, the Oregon Truffle Festival is hosting the first-ever North American truffle dog competition. Named The Joriad for the Jory soil that nurtures Oregon’s grapevines, the two-day competition begins with a series of qualifying events. Day one takes place at the indoor Oregon Horse Center in Eugene and is open to the public. This is a rare opportunity to see trained truffle dogs hunt for the fragrant hidden delicacies. The sport is intense, highly-competitive, and seldom seen, and spectators are invited to cheer on the truffle dogs as they search for truffle-scented targets. Finalists from day one advance to the second day of competition, The Joriad Field Trial, where dogs go head-to-head in a nose-to-ground competition in native Oregon truffle habitat. While this day is not open to the public, the event culminates with an awards gala and dinner at Willamette Valley Vineyards. To learn more about The Oregon Truffle Festival, be sure to visit their website at oregontrufflefestival.com. Here, you will find more information about The Joriad and a link to purchase tickets to day one of the competition. So, why dogs over pigs to hunt truffles? First, dogs are a natural when it comes to sniffing out things: bombs, drugs, people (search and rescue). They just need training. Second (and this goes with the first), dogs are easily trained; pigs are not. Third, dogs won’t eat your bounty. While pigs love the taste of truffles; dogs, not so much. Dogs just need to associate truffles with a reward such as treats or a favorite toy. Want to forage with Fido? If so, be prepared to get dirty—both of you! Truffles prefer to grow 10 to 14 days after a heavy rain, beneath the soil at the base of a tree like pine, fir, Douglas-fir, oak, hazel nut, hickory, birch, beech and eucalyptus. They 8 • CityDog Magazine

are typically found west of the Cascade Mountains, from the southern Puget Sound region of Washington to south and southwestern Oregon in forests up to 100 years old. Since woodland critters also like to forage for truffles, look for fresh “dig pits,” then use a small rake (or your truffle hunting hound) to dig into the soil three or four inches, keeping a sharp eye as many truffles are small and colored red, brown, white or even black. If new to truffle hunting, you should always check with someone more experienced to ensure you have indeed found this buried treasure.

Whether you hunt for truffles for your own pleasure or sell them to a local restaurateur (they can command upwards of $400 per pound), simply getting outdoors, in nature, with your four-legged friend is the ultimate prize.

{books we love} readng time with rover Old Dog Haven By ardeth de vries books we love “Think about what it would be like to be homeless. Now, extend that thought and imagine how you would feel if you were an abandoned, homeless senior citizen...You’re confused, sad, afraid, perhaps not healthy, and no one wants you.” These powerful words introduce us to Old Dog Haven, a non-profit organization dedicated to helping Western Washington’s homeless senior dogs. Author Ardeth de Vries shares the history of Old Dog Haven; how it got started, what it does and how they do it, and best of all, the inspirational stories of senior dogs who found their way into loving homes thanks to the network of foster care families that comprise Old Dog Haven.

Dogs in Cars By lara jo regan

From Labrador retrievers to books we love German shepherds, beagles to dachshunds, mixed breeds to purebreds, dogs love to ride in cars. Photographer Lara Jo Regan captures the universal exhilaration of a dog on the road with 100 distinctive photographs. To get these incredible images, Regan literally hung out the windows of moving cars to get the shots, using a specially designed harness and light. The result is Dogs in Cars, a book of pure joy. This infectiously happy collection of photos is guaranteed to make you smile. The photography is gorgeous, the dogs are adorable, and the happiness is unbridled for all.

The Grief Recovery Handbook for Pet Loss By russell friedman, cole james & john w. james

Your relationship with your pet is special—it’s a bond that is very different than those that human beings share with each other. When a beloved pet passes away, people often resort to incorrect mechanisms to deal with the grief, such as trying to move too quickly past the loss, or even attempting to replace the pet immediately. However, these are merely two myths out of six that the authors discuss and dismantle in The Grief Recovery Handbook for Pet Loss. Based on the authors’ Grief Recovery Method, this book addresses the differences in losing a pet, and ultimately, moving on with life. books we love

{dog’s eye view} for the metropolitan mutt

shop local

Your dollars make a difference. Shopping at local, independent businesses such as your local, neighborhood pet store, generates two to four times the income, wealth and jobs in our community. Not only that, but local business owners care about our community, often supporting local non-profits like Seattle Humane, PAWS, Homeward Pet, and other animal welfare organizations. Plus, local businesses make our community special, reflecting the region’s character, authenticity and dare I say...quirkiness. So, why wouldn’t you shop local? To make it super easy, we’ve compiled a list of local pet shops and some of the locally-made products they carry plus some pet-friendly places to hang out in your ‘hood, so the dollars you spend on and with your dog make a difference.

Seattle u Ballard. Once a sleepy Seattle neighborhood, Ballard is now a bustling community with swanky restaurants and boutiques including two, locally-owned pet stores, All the Best and Mud Bay, plus an off-leash area at Golden Gardens Park.

luxury condominiums like Cristalla and Gallery—both featuring their own private dog runs and wash stations—Belltown is a city dog’s dream. For some off-leash fun, check out Regrade Park. It’s small, tucked in the heart of Belltown on 3rd and Bell, but it’s a great place to socialize your pup.

Shop Local at 2nd Leash on Life 220 Blanchard Street, Seattle, Wash. 206.443.4325; 2ndleashonlife.com 2nd Leash on Life owner, Denise Sasaki, has been serving the needs of Belltown pet owners since 2011—even offering weekly delivery service to area residents. Whether it’s the the coast that calls your name, or Washington’s mystic mountains that beckon, finding a canine-friendly cabin to retreat to this winter is easier than ever. That’s because there are so many. So, we’ve narrowed it down to our top five to make it even easier!

Sleeping Lady Mountain Resort

Lakedale Resort

4313 Roche Harbor Rd, Friday Harbor, Wash. 360.378.2350; lakedale.com

If you’ve ever been to Leavenworth, Wash. in winter and witnessed the town lit with holiday lights, then you know it is a breathtaking sight. If not, then you are in for a special treat. Another treat is Sleeping Lady Mountain Resort, nestled in the Cascade Mountains near Leavenworth. Sleeping Lady’s dog-designated cabins (six total) feature cozy dog beds, water and food bowls, and complimentary treats. They also feature a queen-sized bed and double-decker bunk bed, accommodating up to four people—perfect for families traveling with their furry friends. In addition to the cabins, the property features an amazing restaurant and wine bar, full-service spa, and trails to explore.

Surrounded by three freshwater lakes on 82 acres, Lakedale Resort is nestled between Roche Harbor and Friday Harbor on San Juan Island. There are just six cabins—all of them dog friendly—featuring two bedrooms, two full baths, kitchen, dining nook, gas fireplace and large cedar deck. Each cabin also features complimentary breakfast fixings that include scone and pancake mix, granola, milk, orange juice, butter and syrup. Located outside each cabin, there is a fire pit with a grill and picnic table. As mentioned, Lakedale sits on 82 acres and in the off-season, it feels like you and your four-legged friend have the entire place to yourselves!

Iron Springs Resort 3707 Highway 109, Copalis Beach, Wash. 360.276.4230; ironspringsresort.com Miles of beaches to explore. Rainforests to wander. Waves crashing on the shore. Cozy cabins with wood burning stoves. Your fourlegged friend by your side. These are the special ingredients that make Iron Springs Resort the perfect winter retreat for you and your pooch. Located along Washington’s North Beach coastline, Iron Springs Resort sits perched above the Pacific Ocean. It’s a secluded place, with just 25 cabins on 20 acres, flanked by forest on one side and water on the other. Also on the property is a General Store, guest laundry and clam station—that’s it, but it’s all you need.

Mysty Mountain Properties

 206.219.6427; vacationrentalcabins.com
Just an hour east of Seattle, nestled within the snow-capped Cascade Mountains, Mysty Mountain’s vacation rental cabins offer a little something for everyone. Whether you seek a tranquil cabin near the Skykomish River to relax with your furry friend, or a luxury cabin near Stevens Pass to unwind after a day of adrenaline-packed skiing, they’ve got the cabin for you. Each one of their 26 properties (almost all of them dog friendly) are fully furnished and equipped with everything you could need. You just bring food, fun, Fido and friends, and they provide the rest! One of our favorites is Great Northern Lodge, a magnificent three story lodge situated on 2.5 wooded acres. It features a hot tub, game room, fire pit, mountain view, and easy access to Stevens Pass Ski Area just 20 minutes away. Another favorite is Index River Roost, a three bedroom cabin located near the adorable town of Index on the Skykomish River.

While not techically a cabin retreat, Alta Crystal Resort is a mountain retreat worth mentioning. That’s because Alta Crystal Resort is located at Crystal Mountain, a skiier’s paradise and now a pooch lover’s paradise. The resort’s recently added, dog-friendly suites are limited, so book early, especially in winter. Upon arrival, your pooch will be warmly welcomed with treats, while the staff directs you to dozens of trails surrounding the property. All of the trails in the national forest are open to dogs, so that means you can hike or snowshoe anywhere around the resort as well as Crystal Mountain. Holiday/Winter 2014 • 23

best of the

west p best winter storm watching

Ecola State Park, Oregon Coast

Ecola State Park is a hiking and sightseeing mecca, with trails situated above nine miles of Pacific Ocean shoreline. Visitors to the park are treated to cliffside viewpoints overlooking picture-perfect seascapes and yearround scenery that is breathtaking. However, if a cozier storm watching experience is more your speed, then an oceanfront room at Surfsand Resort is your ticket. The Surfsand sits perched on the Pacific, just steps from Cannon Beach’s world-famous landmark, Haystock Rock. You can brave the beach or order room service, cozy up by the gas fireplace in your waterside room and watch the waves crash along the shore. surfsandresort.com 24 • CityDog Magazine

t best doggone winery

Mutt Lynch Winery

Sonoma County, California winery Mutt Lynch is one of our favorites because it is proud to support a variety of dog-related charities each year, including Washington’s own Wenatchee Humane Society. If you are in the area, call ahead to arrange a tasting. Try the Merlot Over and Play Dead—owner Brenda Lynch claims this wine “is not a wimpy merlot.” Mutt Lynch will even host special events for your canine and her furry friends—birthday parties, puppy showers and “bark” mitzvahs! And, every August, Mutt Lynch hosts the Dog Days of Summer, a dog-friendly fundraising, wine tasting, hot dog eating event to support the Healdsburg Animal Shelter. muttlynchwinery.com

t best beach to run free

Long Beach, Wash.

The beautiful, 21-mile Long Beach Peninsula consists of seven small communities, each with their own charm. There are also two light houses, plenty of parks, and miles and miles of driftwood covered, sandy beaches. For a pooch-friendly place to stay, we recommend the Adrift Hotel in Long Beach, Wash. Owners Brady and Tiffany Turner created a hotel that is unique, modern, fun and relaxed—an oceanfront retreat for all types of travelers to fully enjoy, twoand four-legged alike. Our favorite feature, the Adrift is located just steps away from miles and miles of sandy beach, where pooches can run leash free. adrifthotel.com

t best overnight Splurge Located smack in the heart of downtown Seattle is Hotel 1000, a luxury destination you and your dog can escape to for a much needed reprieve, from dipping your paws...er, toes...in the freestanding two-person pedestal tub, to enjoying gorgeous views of Elliott Bay and Puget Sound. Enjoy a visit to the hotel’s Spaahh—yep, that’s what it’s called, the Spaahh— then enjoy a bite at BOKA, Hotel 1000’s award-winning restaurant. Your four-legged friend is welcome to join you on the patio, where the two of you can share a burger and truffle fries. hotel1000seattle.com

t best place to sleep in a yurt

Cave B Inn, Quincy, Wash.

The desert yurts at Cave B Inn are simply divine. There are 25 yurts in all, perched on a hillside overlooking the inn’s property with sweeping views of the Columbia River Gorge and surrounding vineyard. And, even though a yurt may be a bit more rustic, it doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice comfort. Each one features a private bathroom, with walk-in shower, sofa, table and chairs and mini-fridge. The décor is minimalist, but hey, it’s a yurt. Really, all the décor you need is the cool skydome, perfect for stargazing while relaxing with Rover in the comfort of your king sized bed. cavebinn.com

t best happy hour on the patio

520 Bar and Grill, Bellevue, Wash.

Who doesn’t love a good happy hour and we found a good one at 520 Bar and Grill in Bellevue, Wash. and the outdoor garden patio is the place to be—the ambiance is casual, the food is superb, the service is excellent, and best of all, it’s dog friendly. On our last visit, we ordered the Ahi Tuna Bites, seared rare and served with a seaweed garnish and ginger dressing. However, rumor has it they also make the best nachos in Bellevue, layered with cheddar jack cheese, olives, jalepenos, black beans and topped with pico de gallo and sour cream. They sound totally droolworthy, so we will definitely be back with our best friend in tow to try ‘em. 520barandgrill.com

Rio Vista Wines, Chelan Wash.

u

To get to Rio Vista Wines, you have three options: by car, by boat and by plane. Yes, by plane...seaplane, that is. Situated on the banks of the Columbia River, Rio Vista Wines is the only waterfront winery in the region and Chelan Seaplanes will whisk you there, with a 10-minute, scenic flight from Lake Chelan. The sweeping property at Rio Vista is gorgeous—and better yet, totally dog friendly. While you taste wine, your four-legged friend can explore off-leash with Rocky, the estate’s resident Lab and face that graces one of the winery’s 11 labels, Wacky White. Winery owners John and Jan Little grow seven varieties of grapes on the property, from pinot gris to gewurztraminer (try saying that three times!) and all of them are delicious. riovistawines.com

+

• Every Thursday during the summer, the Blending Room, located in Manson, Wash. hosts a dog-friendly Yappy Hour. The winery even has a fenced area, where your pooch can play off-leash, while you enjoy a tasting flight of delicious whites and reds. blendingroomwinery.com

best wine tasting, western Washington

u

DeLille Cellars, Woodinville, Wash.

We love Woodinville wine country—it’s home to over 100 wineries and tasting rooms, most of them dog-friendly. One our favorites is DeLille Cellars. The winery’s Carriage House welcomes two- and four-legged alike inside the tasting room as well as outside on the patio, for a more relaxed wine tasting experience. Your pooch will enjoy the seemingly endless supply of doggie treats, while you enjoy the delcious wine. delillecellars.com

best place to eat breakfast and pick blueberries

Blueberry Hills Farms p

Don’t let the line out the door deter you from partaking in breakfast at Blueberry Hills Farm. The long line is testament to its deliciousness plus it moves quickly and before you know it, you and your pooch are comfortably seated on the outdoor patio overlooking the farm’s blueberry fields. And, no matter the wait, with items like Kari’s Blintz (one large sweet crepe filled with a blend of ricotta and cream cheeses, topped with your choice of warm pie filling: blueberry, peach, or both, and a dollop of whipped cream), it’s worth it. After breakfast, if you feel so inclined, grab a bucket from the counter outside, and pick blueberries in the nearby field to take home with you—blueberries are $2 a pound when you “upick.” wildaboutberries.com

Special needs, special dogs A blind, abused dog with a stinky fungus infection may not seem like the obvious choice for an ideal companion, but to me he was perfect. When I adopted him I had no way of predicting how this crumpled little creature would change my world. I realize some would consider dogs like my Twinkle as broken, but there are others who recognize the beauty and potential these incredible animals possess. Many who adopt them will agree, these dogs are capable of anything they set their minds to, despite their disabilities. Lena and Brian Schultz learned this first hand while fostering Honey, a dachshund puppy. Honey seemed like a regular little dog, however, following a vet visit they discovered she was born completely deaf and partially blind. Both were shocked. At such a young age she was already compensating for her disabilities, playing and barking alongside her other fosters. Instead of being intimidated by Honey’s special needs, Lena and Brian embraced them and adopted her. Honey had such a positive impact on the couple’s lives, they welcomed Huckleberry and Bruno, two more special need dogs, into their home. Also a dachshund, Huckleberry is completely deaf and partially blind. Additionally, this loveable little guy experiences seizures. These tiny dynamos are adorable together, like two energy-fueled peas in a pod. However, not everyone in this exceptional family is so pint sized. Bruno is a handsome pitbull Lena and Brian saved from a life of isolation. He had been tethered and left outside, with no protection from the elements and very little socialization. This charming boy also had scarring on his forehead and an extreme case of separation anxiety. With a handful of patience, lots of love and some help from a vet, Bruno’s challenging conditions slowly improved. The Schultz’s agree, it was worth the extra effort to give these incredible dogs a second chance. Now all three lead very happy lives together.

and chronic allergic bronchitis, but like most dogs that are special-abled, he exhibited a great appreciation for life. For me, there is something magical about watching these incredible creatures bravely going about their day. It has a way of putting things in perspective. However, along with all of the rewards, there can also be challenges. Challenges like vet bills, sleepless nights and problems requiring a little creativity to solve, but no one I have spoken to has voiced any regret about sharing their lives with these dogs. Quite the opposite, many feel inspired to do more. Most people who help animals with special needs, do so because they have had first hand encounters with them. They understand they have value. I know my blind boys have showed me things I would have missed without them. They have taught me lessons no one else could.

“Having dogs with special needs isn’t really different than having any other dog. When people meet my dogs, most of the time they don’t even know they are different. They get along almost as well as any other dog with full sight and hearing,” says Lena.

Nevertheless, even with all the blessings these animals can bring into your life, I fully understand that special need companions are not for everyone. However, I hope after reading this you will see that there are people out there who cherish and love them dearly. Blind, deaf or wheel-chair bound, surely they all deserve a second chance.

It’s not unusual for people to adopt dogs with disabilities over and over. When Twinkle passed away, adopting another blind dog felt like the natural thing to do. Kizmit, a Pekingese, was my second blind companion. Kizmit also suffered from heart disease

{health + wellness} sound advice for a hound’s life

{health + wellness}

pet first aid In today’s world, our pets are beloved members of our families. We feed them high quality food, take them to the doctor when they’re sick, purchase health insurance and even buy them a special gift on their birthday. We love them and they love and depend on us. Though we often take it for granted, they’re just as susceptible to accidents, injury and hazardous conditions as the human members of our family. Being prepared for an emergency is one of the most important things you can do for your pet. The daily news is full of stories of lives saved when someone knew CPR or first aid. Here in King County we are extremely lucky—it is the best place in the world to have a heart attack. In part, it’s because our first responders are outstanding, but it is also because so many people are trained in CPR. This passion for response should naturally carry over to our furry companions. While emergency vets are fantastic resources and we hope to never need them, we’re happy they’re there. Nonetheless having the skills to begin treatment immediately can mean the difference between life and death. The American Animal Hospital Association estimates that one out of every four animal fatalities seen at emergency vet clinics could be prevented if just one appropriate first aid technique was applied en route. The list of who can benefit from pet first aid training is a long one. While acquiring first aid skills is a good idea for pet owners, for pet care professionals it is even more crucial. Many teachers, daycare workers, and bus drivers are required to stay current on CPR and first aid certification. Those requirements should naturally carry over to our pet care professionals too.

written by Brent McKnight and Larry Fosnick Davis

As the pet industry explodes across the country with dog daycares, boarding facilities, groomers, pet sitters, dog walkersand trainers, these are all businesses where first aid is a vital skill to have. It should be among the first questions you ask of your pet professional—are they pet first aid certified and is that certification current? As with human first aid and CPR, these certifications are good for about three years as recommended procedures change over time. First responders should seriously consider training in basic animal first aid. They are, by definition, the first on the scene and frequently encounter situations where a pet is involved in an accident or fire and requires aid. Pet first aid differs from human first aid in several important areas and even a thorough training in the latter does not automatically carry over into the animal world. Washington is renowned for its outdoor opportunities and many enthusiasts hike, camp, boat and fish with their dogs in areas where immediate veterinary assistance is not available. In the event of an emergency it is even more important that we have these lifesaving skills. Working animals like hunting dogs, search and rescue canines, or police dogs are put into potentially dangerous situations and are even more likely to be in need of emergency first aid. Activities like agility, dock jumping, tracking and herding, which like any physical activity can be hard on the body, continue to grow in popularity. In these sports knowing the signs of injury and how to treat them on the spot become increasingly important to the health and overall wellbeing of our pets. Every pet owner should take some sort of pet first aid class. We have found the Walks ‘n’ Wags Pet First Aid curriculum to be the most comprehensive available anywhere in North America. While for many pet owners a brief class may be appropriate, anyone who is in a position of caring for another’s pet, and those who might find themselves in a situation where veterinary care is not conveniently available, should invest the time in taking significantly more extensive training. As a pet owner, you should demand the best from your pet care professional. In addition to asking if they are certified, ask them who they are certified with—if it isn’t Walks ‘n’ Wags, then it isn’t the best.
