Welcome to the winter issue of CityDog Magazine Baltimore. Since our launch, I am pleased to say we have added a new member to our family, Louie, who turned a year old in October (of course, we sang happy birthday while he enjoyed special treats). He is a very sweet beagle and very smart. His favorite activity is to bark and chase squirrels. When he is tired he likes to climb on my lap and take a nap. Speaking of puppies and treats, in this issue, we present an article called Little Puppies Love Cookies, written by a talented 4th grader, Tatyana Chasen. Tatyana, who lives in Howard County, writes about the business she runs, The Dogs Orchard of Cookies. CityDog Baltimore is proud to have Tatyana as our first contributing junior writer, and to showcase this talented young entrepreneur to our readers. We envision making this a regular feature, called Little Bites, and we invite other aspiring young writers to submit their dog-related stories. In this issue, we also feature an article by Amy Myers about one of the best dog-friendly restaurants in Baltimore, Blue Pit Barbecue and Whiskey Bar. Owners Cara Bruce and David Newman epitomize what it means to be dog friendly. They are extremely generous and committed to fundraising for pet welfare organizations such as BARCS (Baltimore Animal Rescue and Care Shelter) and the Maryland SPCA. In fact, if you visit Blue Pit Barbecue and Whiskey Bar, it is hard not to notice walls lined with adoptable pets from BARCS, as well as numerous framed pictures of puppies that have dined on the restaurant’s back patio.

ABOUT THE COVER This issue features Sakai, the blue pit of Blue Pit BBQ and Whiskey Bar based in Baltimore, Maryland. Not only is Sakai the official mascot and meat taster, but he is also the center of the universe for his humans, Blue Pit owners Cara Bruce and David Newman, who rescued him after they lost their first blue pit mix Naples. Sakai enjoys spending time with his two feline siblings at home—he used to spend most days at Blue Pit when it was just a bar, but once food was added to the menu, regulations won’t permit it. Sakai is named after Sakai, a port town in Japan that was once famous for its samurai swords and is now known for making some of the best knives in the world.
Keeping your dog safe is always a priority for dog owners. This is especially true during a natural disaster. This issue gives our readers tips on what to do in case a natural disaster occurs. How do you help make sure your pet is returned to you if he/she is lost? What are the best methods of identification? What crucial items need to be part of a pet evacuation or pet disaster kit? Thanks to Sharon Staph of Pets on Wheels, CityDog Baltimore can provide our readers with a comprehensive list of actions that should be taken during a natural disaster. This issue also features our special Home+Living Guide, where you will find some of our favorite finds including furniture, flooring, textiles, toys, and more for you, your home and your hound—because, as all dog lovers know, a house is not a home without a four-legged friend. Dogs are amazingly social animals who love attention and being around us. And some dogs love being around us so much that they follow us everywhere. Lisa Fimberg, owner of the online pet newsletter Petpav, helps our readers better understand the instinctual nature of dogs, and why dogs love being around us. BOOKS WE LOVE Dog owners are flocking to natural homemade food for their pups. Now you can spoil (and nourish) your pampered pooch with only the best ingredients. In the new book Doggy Desserts: 125 Homemade Treats for Happy, Healthy Dogs by Cheryl Gianfrancesco, dog owners can rest easy knowing they are providing their pooch with a snack made with healthy ingredients. This beautiful book presents easy-to-do, fun recipes divided into six categories: cookies, bars, drop cookies, cakes, muffins, and frozen treats. Here are a few of our favorites.
Banana Oatmeal Cookies Ingredients 1 1⁄2 cups unbleached white flour 1⁄2 tsp ground cinnamon 1 3⁄4 cups quick-cooking oats, uncooked 1⁄4 cup unsalted walnuts, chopped 1 cup all-natural applesauce, no sugar added
1⁄2 tsp baking soda 1⁄4 tsp ground nutmeg 1⁄4 cup vegetable oil 3 bananas, mashed 1⁄4 cup honey
1. In a large bowl, mix all the ingredients. 2. With a teaspoon, drop spoonfuls of dough on a baking sheet, about 11⁄2 inches apart. 3. Bake at 350 degrees or 10 to 15 minutes. 4. When done, the cookies should be firm to the touch. 5. Turn the oven off, and leave the cookies in for 1 to 2 hours to harden.
Liver and Garlic Strips Ingredients 1⁄2 lb liver 2 eggs 1⁄2 cup water 2 cups whole wheat flour 1 tsp garlic powder 1. In a blender, mix the liver, eggs, and water. 2. Add the remaining ingredients, and mix well. 3. Pour into a 9- by 12- by 2-inch baking pan, and spread the mixture evenly in the pan. 4. Bake at 350 degrees for 35 to 40 minutes. 5. When done, the mixture should be dry on top and firm to the touch. 6. Cool the mixture in the pan, and then cut it into 1- by 2-inch strips. 8 • CityDog Magazine
Strawberry Frost Ingredients 2 3⁄4 cups frozen strawberries 1 cup low-fat vanilla yogurt 1⁄4 cup honey 1⁄2 tsp pure vanilla extract 1. Place all the ingredients in a blender or food processor, cover, and blend until smooth. 2. If you are not going to serve the strawberry frost immediately, pour the mixture into a freezer- safe container and freeze until firm. 3. Remove the container from the freezer, and allow the frost to soften before serving.

Ingredients 2 cups low-fat plain yogurt 1⁄4 cup honey 12 oz frozen raspberries 1⁄4 cup water 1. Place all the ingredients in a blender or food processor, cover, and blend until smooth. 2. Pour the mixture into a freezersafe container, and freeze until firm. 3. Remove the container from the freezer, and allow the sherbet to soften before serving. Ingredients 1 cup quick-cooking oats, uncooked 4 Tbsp vegetable oil 11⁄3 cups water 1⁄2 cup powdered skim milk 1⁄2 cup low-fat cheddar cheese, shredded 1 egg 1 cup cornmeal 1⁄2 cup wheat germ 3 1⁄2 cups whole wheat flour 1. In a large bowl, mix all the ingredients. Knead the dough on a floured surface. 2. Roll out the dough to 1⁄2-inch thickness, and cut out shapes with a dog bone cookie cutter. 3. Put the cookies on a baking sheet, 1⁄2 inch apart. Bake at 300 degrees for 55 to 60 minutes. 4. When done, the cookies should be firm to the touch. 5. Turn oven off and leave the cookies in for one to two hours to harden.

LITTLE PUPPIES LOVE COOKIES

Hi! I am Tatyana Chasen, a Howard County fourth grader, who runs a business called The Dogs Orchard of Cookies. I make dog cookies with all natural ingredients, such as egg, whole wheat flour, and pumpkin or sweet potato puree or homemade applesauce. Apple cookies are the most popular because I think dogs really like the great taste of homemade applesauce. Yum! When I sell my cookies, I usually donate any unsold cookies to The Baltimore Humane Society, Best Friends, or BARCS. I do this so that all the dogs without a home or those dogs who have been left behind in Texas and Florida have some yummy treats from ME! I also collect monetary donations for these charities. On Saturday, September 16, 2017, I went to the Baltimore Humane Society to sell my dog cookies. I sold almost all of them and donated the unsold treats. There were a ton of people there, some with dogs and some without dogs. I gave out samples of my treats too.

I came up with this business because I really love dogs and when I grow up I want to be a veterinarian. I also learned about how to run a business during my Economics unit at school last year. I have two dogs of my own. They are shih tzus. I take them on walks, feed them once a day, give them treats, fresh water, and best of all, I give them lots of love! I look forward to selling my cookies again at future DogFests or a community yard sale near you.

We all love our dogs. And this is especially true of the staff of WJZ TV. In the summer issue of CityDog Magazine we featured several news anchors for WJZ, who took the time to pose with their furry pets and answer a few questions about their dog’s favorite treats, their favorite activity with their dog and any funny fact or quirk about their dog. KIMBERLY EITEN is an Eyewitness News Reporter. Her dog Peter Jennings loves cheese. Kimberly says, “Jennings loves to unwrap presents. He’s everybody’s helper on Christmas morning.” His favorite activity is daily walks around the Inner Harbor. DENISE KOCH is an Eyewitness News Anchor/Reporter. Denise has two dogs, Sophie and Eddie. Denise says their favorite treat is chicken jerky. She continues, “Funny fact. Sophie was my daughter Jo’s 10th grade Christmas present. She wanted a little dog, so we got her an Italian greyhound. Sophie was ‘supposed’ to go to college with Jo but she’s now ours permanently. When my Lab died we decided Sophie was lonely, so we went to the Baltimore County Humane Society and found Eddie. They are polar opposites yet best of friends. Favorite activity with my dogs? Lying on the couch with a blanket and a book, with both both nestled under the blanket warming my legs. They love to be under covers. I love their companionship and….the opportunity to REST!” BOB TURK Bob Turk is a member of the Eyewitness News Weather team. His dog Sampson’s favorite toy is a large 12” rawhide bone. “Sampson can unlock any door or gate,: says Bob. “He likes walking on the trail and waits patiently for moles in my yard.”

In the heart of Baltimore is a dog-friendly and dog-welcoming district lined with small businesses and unique boutiques. It is the small town in our big city that we call Hampden. Follow the smell of smoked meat and the sound of clinking glasses to Blue Pit BBQ and Whiskey Bar on Union Avenue. For its twolegged customers, Blue Pit features mouth-watering meats, over 100 American made whiskeys, original and seasonal cocktails, and house-made sauces. But this establishment does more than just serve savory suppers. Blue Pit is renowned for its involvement with many organizations that benefit furry faces. Just beyond the front door to the restaurant, owners Cara Bruce and David Newman have lined the walls with adoptable dogs from BARCS and the Maryland SPCA. Beside the wall of hounds looking for homes is framed with pictures of the pups that dined on the back patio of Blue Pit, and just below this celebrity wall is a gumball machine full of toys and trinkets that customers can purchase for just a couple coins. All of the proceeds from the gadget are donated to BARCS. Beyond the décor, Cara and David always include opportunities to raise funds for BARCS and the SPCA in their menus and events too. They offer a “whiskey of the week,” in which one dollar of the charge is given to the BARCS, as well as a portion of the profits from their Dogs and Hogs event on October 19 that features a whole roasted hog and Dogfish brews. Throughout the year, David and Cara host photo fundraisers where your pup can dress up for a photo-shoot with a professional photographer, like the upcoming holiday themed event, “Santa Paws.” On Sundays, Blue Pit hosts Simple Solutions basic obedience sessions on their sunlit patio. With all of the dedicated and irreplaceable work that it continues to do for the canine community, it’s hard to believe that Blue Pit debuted just three years ago.

David and Cara opened their restaurant with the mission to create a fun and original atmosphere for their Hampden neighbors. With David’s previous experience as the chef at Brewer’s Art, as well as his love for whiskey and a spit roaster, Blue Pit BBQ and Whiskey Bar was born. But as plans were drawn and menus were created, something was still missing from their restaurant. “It has to be about more than making money,” Bruce said. That’s where Sakai came in.

After the tragic loss of their two-year old pit bull, Naples, David and Cara came across a blue pit puppy in the BARCS Animal Shelter. Cara recalled, “As soon as I put him in my arms, I said we’ll take him.” Sakai became the outdoor host and even a part of the clean up team in the morning, generously lapping up the scraps left on the patio from the last night’s meals. The fourlegged crewmember became the mascot of the restaurant and the inspiration for David and Cara to get more involved with the petbased organizations in Baltimore. But Blue Pit’s generosity doesn’t stop with the canine community. David and Cara have worked with the Hampden Family Center, Moveable Feast, Blue Water Baltimore, Youth Empowerment Society (YES), and countless more organizations. Blue Pit has offered their space and support for meetings, profits, and events. “Hampden is our backyard,” Bruce said, “We wouldn’t be where we are without the community.” With the mutual compassion that comes from Blue Pit and their customers, the restaurant’s presence contributes to the family atmosphere that is unique to the district. “Our mission is to serve good quality food and drinks, and to take care of the community and our people.”

Dogs are amazingly social animals who love attention and enjoy being around us humans. And some dogs love being around you so much that they follow you everywhere. Besides the fact that your pup just likes you, why does your dog follow you all the time?

YOUR DOG WILL FOLLOW YOU BECAUSE YOU MAKE HIM FEEL SECURE
SEPARATION ANXIETY
The most likely reason your dog follows you is that you make your dog feel secure. You are your dog’s world and best friend. When you leave for a long time, your dog’s security feels interrupted. So your dog follows you everywhere to cherish every minute together.
If your dog never leaves your side and it’s problematic, he probably suffers from separation anxiety. If you think this is the case, it’s important to work out the issues. Try leaving your dog a toy to play with even when you’re home so he knows that he can be okay when he is not by your side. Also, make sure your dog is getting enough exercise and isn’t just following you out of boredom.
DOGS FOLLOW BECAUSE IT’S INSTINCTUAL From young puppies, dogs learn how to follow their littermates. Puppies tend to follow each other. If one pup goes to the mother for milk, the others follow because they know that one puppy is moving towards something they all want. And they follow you because, well, that’s what they know.
DOGS ARE PACK ANIMALS AND STAY CLOSE TOGETHER Dogs are pack animals and try to stay with whomever is close by. Not only do dogs know to keep close, but they sense that you are the one who provides a bed, safety and rub downs. Dogs are more likely to follow the friendliest dog, not the pack leader. So the fact that your dog follows you around suggests that your pup feels safe around you and that you provide love and good rub downs.
ANOTHER REASON MIGHT BE THAT YOUR PUP REALLY LIKES BEING AROUND YOU It is known that dogs are sociable animals and like being around people. So if your dog follows you around, he or she just wants to be near you. You walk away and your dog wants to know what you’re doing. Are you getting a snack that he might share? Are you grabbing his leash? Your dog can’t miss an opportunity to see what you’re doing and wants to join the fun.
DOGS ARE RESOURCEFUL AND FOLLOW THE PEOPLE WHO PROVIDE Dogs naturally place value on resources in order to survive. High-value resources are ones that are a priority and these are things like food, water and territory. Dogs want to keep an eye on their resources. Think about how your dog reacts when you pet another dog or when someone rings
Whatever the reason, it’s nice to be loved and have your dog by your side. As long as he doesn’t follow you somewhere he shouldn’t (in the shower?), simply enjoy being loved and cherished by your dog.

DISASTER PREP FOR PETS No one wants to face a natural disaster. But 2017 has shown us that many of us will, and it’s always best to be prepared. There is lots of information available for what to do for your home, but what about your pets? Here are some tips to keep you prepared, just in case.

IDENTIFICATION IS CRITICAL

Micro-Chipping your pets is invaluable to getting a pet returned to you if they are lost. If your pet isn’t chipped already, make that a priority. If your pet is chipped, have the chip checked by your veterinarian. This helps to make sure that it is reading properly and ensures that your current name and address information is on record. This is especially important if your pet was already chipped prior to your getting them. Check that all of your pets have collars and are wearing identification with your current contact information AND an alternate number in case you lose power or need to leave the area.

Obtain a current copy of your pets’ medical records, vaccination list and medication information from your vet for your evacuation kit. Photocopy the record – if you have time and you know weather danger is looming, consider laminating the information. Keep a copy of the records in a waterproof container – you may also want to scan it and keep it along with other important information on a USB drive as well. You can even send copies to a trusted friend in a safe area.
HAVE A PET DISASTER / EMERGENCY EVACUATION KIT ON-HAND

Food and water for at least 5 days in a sealed (water proof) container.

Medical information, medication list, veterinarian’s name, address and phone number, vaccination record, and current photo of each pet. This information will be required to board pets and if you stay at a hotel or motel with your pet.

Litter and box, scoop and garbage bags in a sealed, waterproof container. You can buy disposable litter pans or make your own using disposable aluminum casserole/cooking pans. Piddle pads and pet diapers (if needed). Pads can be helpful for emergency clean up or as a surface barrier to keep your pet on a clean surface. As they absorb water, keep them in plastic zip lock bag or sealed container.

If you plan on sheltering in place, identify alternate evacuation locations that accept pets. Plan to take your pets with you if you need to evacuate. You have no way of knowing how long you’ll be kept out of the area. You may not be able—or allowed—to go back for your pets. Pets left behind in a disaster can easily be injured, lost or killed. Identify evacuation shelters that accept pets and alternate locations for evacuation. Contact hotels and motels outside
your immediate area to find out if they accept pets. Ask about any restrictions on number, size and species. Inquire if a “no pet” policy or pet restrictions would be waived in an emergency. Keep the information with your emergency kit.

Call ahead for a reservation as soon as you think you might have to leave your home.
•
Make a list of several different places in different areas and keep the information on these places with your evacuation pack (including name, address, phone number and directions).
•
Consider arrangements with friends or relatives outside your immediate area if they would be able to shelter you and your pets—or just your pets—if necessary.
•
Consider a kennel or veterinarian’s office. Identify their vaccination requirements for boarding in advance. Make a list of boarding facilities and veterinary offices that might be able to shelter animals during disasters. Make sure to include their 24-hour telephone numbers in addition to main office numbers.
In addition to an emergency plan for times when you and your family will be on site at home, it’s also wise to have an emergency plan for your pet while you are away or on vacation. Here are some things to consider:
• If you board your pet or hire a pet sitter when you travel, ask about their emergency preparedness plan. If the boarding facility must close, you need to make a plan for your pets well in advance. • Identify an emergency caretaker for your pets. Make sure they are familiar with your pets and have access and all the necessary information. • Always provide your pet sitter or boarding facility with the name and contact information for your authorized emergency caretaker, in case your pet needs to be picked up and sheltered while you are away. We never want anyone to ever face a disaster. But if it happens, being prepared can mean the difference between life and death, for all of your family members. Take time now to be safe later. TAKE THE ACHE OUT OF ARTHRITIS Have you ever noticed your dog limping, acting stiff, or unable to jump to and from their favorite couch spot? Chances are, they’re dealing with achy joints or arthritis. As dogs age and become less active, the chances of them developing aches and pains increases.
Thankfully, just like for humans, there are treatments and remedies to combat arthritis and keep your dog happy and healthy for years to come. Julie Nealey, who owns Stella and Floyd’s Pet Services in Edmonds, has been around her own dogs and client’s dogs for decades, and says that of her 422 active clients, one third of those actively deal with joint pain and arthritis. “The majority of the pets that I care for are on a Glucosamine supplement, in addition to a prescribed pain reliever and anti-inflammatory, she said. “I find that the majority of pets I care for see fluctuating levels of relief, if any, as there are risks to higher or prolonged Rimadyl or Tramadol therapy.” In Nealey’s experience, Glucosamine has very little if any effect, with Rimadyl and Tramadol (both prescribed anti-inflammatories) helping for a only a short time--and carrying too many risks. “I believe they are best used for acute and short-term relief from the pain. These are a temporary fix, but do little to eliminate the cause, or repair what has been damaged,” she said. Instead, Nealey recommends more unconventional and overlooked therapies: body and joint massage, water therapy, dietary supplements like bone broth, omega 3, and turmeric powder, and acupuncture and CBD supplements. “Definitely try acupuncture, as I have seen marked relief with ongoing care,” she said. “When the acupuncture is paired with a daily high quality Omega 3 supplement, gelatin and bone broth supplementation at each meal, I have seen a significant increase in mobility and decrease in pain.” Dr. Cynthia Glover, DVM, of LunarPoodle Veterinary Services, shares this same philosophy. After earning her veterinary degree in 1997, Glover went on to work at small animal clinics in Washington and Alaska. In 2013, she began studying animal acupuncture at the Chi Institute of Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine, while working on starting her own house call practice. After finishing her certification in 2014, she incorporated acupuncture into her house call practice full time. 34 • CityDog Magazine

“The seeds of my interest in alternative therapies started while I was working in a conventional practice and noticed that some of our clients were interested in giving herbs for their pets. Since we didn’t offer these, some struck off on their own and sometimes ran into trouble,” Glover said. “I realized I would need to learn more about herbs and other therapies to help guide these clients. As I dove in trying to learn more, I became fascinated by Chinese medicine and realized I really wanted to learn acupuncture and apply it for my own patients.” According to Glover, acupuncture is helpful in treating arthritis and stiff joints in dogs because it helps to restore the normal flow of “Qi” (energy or life-force) throughout the body. “From a more familiar Western standpoint, acupuncture helps to relax muscles that are knotted around those sore joints, releases endorphins, and increases blood flow in the damaged areas,” she said. In additional to traditional acupuncture, Glover also sometimes uses electro-acupuncture, which works like a TENS unit and does a great job of getting muscles to relax, providing amazing relief to the pets that receive it. Her favorite part of acupuncture: no negative side effects. “I love the fact that there are no negative side effects as there are with conventional drugs. I also like the fact that Chinese medi-
cine is very “accepting” of new technologies so it is perfect for an integrative approach with conventional Western medicine, or along with treatments like Adequate or laser,” she said. Acupuncture also allows her to tailor her treatments to each individual patient, depending on whether her patients are sore after exercise or are stiff after getting up, sensitive to hot or cold, or any combination. “I’m always excited to hear a client tell me that their pet is able to climb the stairs more easily, play in the yard, and has more energy. Providing a good quality of life is important to me and knowing that acupuncture increases a pet’s comfort really keeps me going,” she said. “And while I can’t change the underlying structure of an arthritic joint, I’m working more to address the underlying cause of the pain than to simply mask it with a drug.” If you’re looking to try a supplement, both Nealey and Glover recommend CBD (cannabidoil). CBD contains no THC, so is non-toxic for pets, and can have amazing results. “I think the best part of CBD effectiveness is that it acts on the ‘receiving’ end of nerve cells rather than the ‘transmission’ end. Most conventional drugs work on the transmission side, and adding more drugs there is essentially working along the same pathway. By using CBDs we can treat the pain using another and widely effective pathway,” Glover said. Ultimately, a solid arthritis treatment plan includes a combination of therapies, a well-balanced diet, and exercise. “I see the best results from clients that have their dogs swim (great non-weight bearing exercise and keeping range of motion) or walk, massage, and stretching as well as acupuncture, and lesser results with dogs that only get acupuncture and then sit for the rest of the week,” Glover said. “A good quality diet and appropriate herbs or supplements are also very important, not only for arthritis but for the entire well-being of the pet.”

Sunday Morning Dog Hike April 8 • Reisterstown, MD at Baltimore Humane Society, 1601 Nicodemus Road. 10 a.m.-11 a.m. Bring your dog and hike on the grounds of our animal shelter’s forested Wildlife Sanctuary. Each hike lasts 45 minutes to one hour. Rain or shine! Hikes will be at a moderate to advanced hiking level, so dog and hiker need to be relatively fit and able to maneuver down trees, climb hills, and cross streams. All dogs must be on a 4- to 6-foot leash (no retractable leashes permitted) and walked by a hiker that is 14 years of age or older (only one dog per person). Bring plenty of drinking water for yourself and your dog. Appropriate hiking attire is recommended. $2 per dog participation fee and prior registration required. Second Sunday of each month. HAIRY PAWTER FOR POOCHES Pet photographer Natalie Landrum has always been a huge fan of Harry Potter. “I remember marking down the days until
the release of the next book and rushing to the bookstore once it did,” says Natalie. She has also always been a fantasy lover in regards to everything, but art is what really resonates with her. “If you have never heard of what a composite is, it is a series of photos put together to make one final image. I taught myself how to create composites, mainly for my daughter because I want her to believe in the magic of creativity and make-believe.” She then thought, “Why not combine my love of animals into famous books and movies?” Thus, the Hairy Pawter canine-styled shoot was born. Natalie asked the community of Baltimore if they would be interested in helping her put this together and was flooded with messages and emails.
