Game #8- Oct. 29 Wofford 28,The Citadel 10

Johnson Hagood Stadium - Charleston, S.C. Charleston, S.C. - The Wofford ground game, which rolled up 291 yards and was led by running back Adrian Young who ran for 72 yards and a touchdown, proved to be the difference as the Terriers defeated The Citadel, 28-10, in Southern Conference action Saturday afternoon at Johnson Hagood Stadium. It was Wofford’s seventh straight win against the Bulldogs (2-6 overall, 1-4 in the Southern Conference) and their fourth consecutive victory in Charleston. The Terriers (5-3, 3-2) have now won three of their last four contests while The Citadel dropped its fourth consecutive game. Wofford jumped on the board first with 6:52 left in the opening quarter as wide receiver Brandon Berry took a reverse 27 yards for a touchdown, capping off a 51-yard scoring drive. Berry’s touchdown followed a conversion by running back Adrian Young on fourth and one from the Bulldog 29. The defense helped the Terriers add to their lead early in the second quarter as nose tackle Katon Bethay intercepted a tipped Justin Knox pass at the Bulldog 21. Young capitalized on the opportunity as he raced to the end zone from 12 yards out to make the score 14-0 with 13:39 left in the first half. The Bulldogs would get back in the contest with some ingenuity on offense. With 7:34 left in the half, first year head coach Kevin Higgins reached into his bag of tricks and called for a wide receiver screen pass from Kinta Palmer to T’Mar Jernigan for a 41-yard yard touchdown that put the Bulldogs on the scoreboard, cutting the lead to 14-7. The Citadel missed an opportunity to tie the contest early in the second half as Justin Matherson recovered a Berry fumble to put the Bulldogs at the Terriers’ 20. Knox later coughed up the ball at the Wofford one-yard line and linebacker Derek Newberry recovered for the Terriers killing the drive. The Bulldogs’ defense held Wofford to a three-and-out series following the fumble and forced the Terriers to punt from their own end zone. The Citadel took advantage of the good field position as kicker Blake Vandiver nailed a 36-yard field goal to make it 14-10 with 7:22 left in the third quarter. The Bulldogs would get no closer as the Terriers took control of the contest with an eight-play, 70-yard scoring drive. With 12:07 left in the game, quarterback Josh Collier went around left guard for a one-yard touchdown run and Robinson’s point after made it 21-10. The Terriers put the game out of reach when defensive end Layton Baker intercepted another tipped Knox pass and returned it 14 yards for a touchdown with 11:19 left in the game. Halfback Gabriel Jackson added 17 carriers for 69 yards for the Terriers while quarterback Josh Collier ran for 61 yards on 17 attempts. The Citadel tailback Nuru Goodrum led the Bulldogs as he rushed for 76 yards on 17 carries.

Paulson Stadium. The Eagles, coming off a disappointing 24-7 loss at Appalachian State last week, rolled up 517 yards of offense and improved to 5-3 (4-2 in the Southern Conference) on the season while the Bulldogs, which have now dropped three straight games, fall to 2-5 overall (1-3 in the league). After the Bulldogs’ defense forced the Eagles to punt on their first possession, The Citadel drove 67 yards on five plays to lead, 7-0, when Nuru Goodrum ran over left tackle and then cut right for 37 yards with 10:05 remaining in the opening quarter. On their next possession, GSU evened the score when Brandon Andrews ran over right tackle from two-yards out with 8:17 remaining. The Eagles added another touchdown and led for the first time, 14-7, when Bulldogs’ quarterback Justin Knox’s screen pass was intercepted by Jason Earwood at The Citadel 30-yard line and returned for a touchdown with 4:42 left in the quarter. It was the most points the Bulldogs allowed in the first quarter all season. Georgia Southern added three more touchdowns in the second period starting with Lynon Jefferson’s five-yard TD run on the second quarter’s opening play. On the Bulldogs’ next possession, Knox was faced with a 4th-and-1 from the GSU 28 but was dropped for a two-yard loss, turning the ball over on downs. The Eagles’ Marquice Maynard scored from four yards out with 5:51 left and GSU added another score when Jayson Foster found receiver Chris Dickerson from 23 yards out to increase the score to 35-7. The Citadel opened the second half with an 84-yard, 15-play drive that took 8:03 off the clock when Knox connected with tight end Aaron Kelly from three yards out to make the score, 35-14. It was Kelly’s first career touchdown reception.
