Convinced by a colleague beekeeper and by the economic crisis, in 2010 Antonio Barletta quit his job to create Urbees, the first project of urban beekeeping in Italy. From April to September 2013 his city bees produced 30 kg of honey from 20 hives spread across various areas of Turin.

Convinto da un collega apicoltore e dalla crisi economica, nel 2010 Antonio Barletta ha abbandonato il suo lavoro per fondare UrBees, il primo progetto di apicoltura urbana in Italia. Da aprile a settembre 2013, le sue api cittadine hanno prodotto 30 kg di miele proveniente da 20 arnie sparse in diverse zone di Torino.

“Il mio primo esperimento di apicoltura fu un disastro. Iniziai con un'arnia in Valchiusella, ad un'ora di distanza da Torino con i mezzi pubblici. A fine stagione le api morirono tutte. Su Facebook lessi un articolo dedicato a esempi di apicultura urbana a New York. Mentre cercavo un altro spazio fuori Torino, scoprii che in altre parti del mondo le api venivano allevate in città. Fu un'illuminazione, capisci? Se gli apicoltori tradizionali allevano le api in campagna o nell'immediata periferia, io le faccio vivere in uno spazio urbano, sul cemento di un balcone o sul tetto di una casa. Punto l'attenzione sulle api, sentinelle della qualità dell'ambiente, mentre gli apicoltori tradizionali producono semplicemente del miele. Il cittadino acquista le arnie, una famiglia di api ed una tuta oppure, se è alle prime armi, può richiedere l'assistenza a domicilio dei tecnici di UrBees. Il miele raccolto viene diviso: metà spetta al cittadino e metà viene venduto per finanziare il progetto. Abbiamo già venduto 2,000 vasetti e raccolto 10,000 euro, subito reinvestiti nel progetto. Con UrBees voglio convincere i cittadini a salvaguardare le api in città e a produrre il miele in modo naturale, dimostrando che è buono, sano e unico. Solo chi assaggia il miele urbano può sentire che è un prodotto diverso da quello di campagna. Alcuni apicoltori mi hanno minacciato perché hanno paura di perdere il lavoro, altri mi hanno detto che sono un venduto alle multinazionali. Non hanno capito che l’apicoltura urbana è tutta un’altra cosa. Gli alveari in città sono una rottura, si differenziano dalla tradizione e portano innovazione. Aiutano le api a sopravvivere insieme a noi, nella nostra città.”

‘If bees were to disappear from the planet man would have but 4 years left to live’. Although there is no evidence that Einstein ever pronounced these words the importance of bees cannot be underrestimated. Besides being responsible for pollination, they give us sweet products; the wax they produce is a natural indicator of environmental pollution. “Se le api scomparissero dalla terra, per l’uomo non resterebbero che 4 anni di vita”. Sebbene non esistano prove sul fatto che Einstein abbia mai pronunciato questa frase, l’importanza delle api non va sottovalutata. Oltre ad impollinare le piante, regalano prodotti dolcissimi e la cera che producono è un indicatore naturale del livello d’inquinamento ambientale.

‘My first beekeeping experiment was a disaster. I started with a hive in Valchiusella, at an hour’s drive from the city by public transport. By the end of the season all the bees had died. I read an article on Facebook which described examples of urban beekeeping in New York. As I was searching for another country location I discovered that elsewhere in the world bees were being kept in the city. Suddenly all was clear. If traditional beekeepers keep their bees in the country or at the city’s outskirts I keep them in an urban space, on concrete balconies or on the roof. I focus my attention on the insects, tell-tales of the quality of the environment, whereas traditional keepers put all of their effort in producing honey. City dwellers can buy the hives, a bee family and a bee suit or, if they’re complete beginners, ask for direct assistance from Urbees experts. The honey is then portioned: half goes to the keeper and the other half is sold to finance the project. We’re already sold 2.000 pots and made 10.000 euros of profit, which have been reinvested in the project. Urbees wants to encourage city people to protect their bees and produce honey naturally, showing that it is yummy, healthy and unique. Only by tasting city honey one can realise that it is different from traditional country honey. Some beekeepers threatened me because they’re afraid of losing their job; others told me that I sold off to the multinationals. They don’t get that urban beekeeping is different. City hives are a rupture, they depart from the tradition and bring about innovation. They help bees to survive in our cities, to coexist with us’.

1. Get a bee family – Adopt a bee family: a nucleus is composed by a queen bee, worker bees and some drones for a total of 20.000 insects. You’ll never feel alone. 2 Build a bee hive – Make a cot with fir, a little door in iron and ten comfortable frames separated from 9 mm. Bees will never leave you. 3 Get closer with a bee smoker – Burn some pieces of iuta into the bee smoker, a tool similar to a bellows, that you will point to the hive. Scared of the smoke, bees will not attack you. 4 Take the honey – Don’t get close to bees without gloves and the protective clothing. The veil to protect your eyes is a must have. 1. Procurati una famiglia di api – Adotta una famiglia di api: un nucleo si compone di un’ape regina, le operaie e qualche fuco per un totale di 20.000 insetti. Non ti sentirai mai più solo. 2. Costruisci un’arnia – Crea una casetta in legno di abete, con una porticina in ferro e dieci accoglienti cornici distanziate di 9 mm l’una dall’altra. Le api non ti abbandoneranno più. 3 Avvicinati con un’affumicatore – Brucia dei pezzetti di juta all’interno di un affumicatore, un attrezzo simile a un soffietto da camino, che dirigerai verso l’arnia. Spaventate dal fumo, le api non ti attaccheranno. 4 Recupera il miele – Non avvicinarti alle api senza aver indosso i guanti e la tua tuta migliore. La veletta per proteggere gli occhi è un must have.

‘I know Turin well but I haven’t traveled much around Italy’. Rachid was only 11 years old when he came to Italy from Morocco, with his brothers, and started roaming the city selling lighters. A couple who owned a bar in the area where he had his street business took him under their wings. They made him enrol at school, took him there and picked him up every day, making sure that he do his homework. For ten years Rachid has survived by selling lighters to the students’ community. The day finally came for him to become one: he enrolled in the course of Civil Engineering at Turin’s Politecnico, paying his way with the sales form his lighters business, going to lectures and studying in his spare time. Today he’s sweating to get his Master’s degree. He remembers all of his clients’ name, one by one. He event learnt the local dialect. ‘I’ve always felt at home in the study rooms,’ Rachid says, ‘This city must guarantee the right to education for all.’

“Torino la conosco bene mentre l’Italia l’ho girata poco”. Rachid aveva solo 11 anni quando è arrivato dal Marocco insieme ai suoi fratelli e ha cominciato a girare la città vendendo accendini. Una coppia che aveva un bar nella zona in cui lavorava ha preso ad accudirlo: l’hanno costretto a iscriversi a scuola, ce l’hanno portato e sono andati a prenderlo ogni giorno e hanno insistito perché facesse i compiti. Per dieci anni, Rachid è sopravvissuto vendendo accendini a tutta la comunità universitaria. Poi è diventato universitario anche lui: si è iscritto a Ingegneria Civile al Politecnico di Torino, pagandosi la retta con la vendita degli accendini e usando il resto del suo tempo per studiare e andare a lezione. Oggi è iscritto alla laurea magistrale, si ricorda i nomi di tutti i suoi clienti e ha imparato il dialetto piemontese. “Io nelle aule studio mi sono sentito come a casa”, dice Rachid, “Questa città deve garantire a tutti la possibilità di studiare”.

In 2001 the foreign students registered at Turin’s Politecnico were 400. Today the figure is over 5000. Rachid is one of them: he graduated in engineering by selling lighter after lighter.

Se, come lui, vuoi aprire un’attività per la strada, assicurati di scegliere la carriera che si adatta meglio alle tue caratteristiche. Per diventare un venditore di caldarroste, installa un calderone di metallo sotto i portici di via Roma. ‘Castra’ il frutto incidilo per il lungo - e cuocilo per 20 minuti. Puoi guadagnare 3 euro per cestino. Se invece cerchi un lavoro da parcheggiatore abusivo, piazzati nel mezzo di un parcheggio affollato, alla stazione dei treni o nel quartiere di San Salvario: se vedi una macchina indirizzala verso il primo posto vuoto, con cortesia ma fermezza. Stai attento: nel 2013 il Comune di Torino ha fermato 129 colleghi abusivi. Come artigiano di fermacapelli, sistemati di fronte a un caffè storico. Ti servono strisce di nylon colorate, filo di ferro e una testa di manichino. Fora il nylon ad entrambe le estremità e infilaci il filo di ferro. Fatto. Puoi vendere un fermacapelli per 5 euro a una signora elegante. Se sei un venditore illegale, come la maggior parte di chi lavora per strada, allora tieni gli occhi bene aperti: se un collega ti fa un segnale, scappa. Ci potrebbe essere un poliziotto nelle vicinanze. Non scordarti di restituire il favore, la prossima volta.

This Morrocan man arrived in Italy illegally in 1994, having neither a residence permit nor any friends or relatives who could give him a hand. Very soon he made friends with the officers at the police station who helped him find a legal job and get his residence permit. Since then he has been selling umbrellas, lighters, pocket tissues, bracelets, socks and gloves in the streets and is now thinking of bringing his family over to Turin. If you want to open business in the street like him make sure you choose the career that better suits your skills. To become a chestnut seller, set up a typical iron cauldron under the porticoes of Via Roma. ‘Castrate’ the fruit - that is make a cut lengthwise - and cook it for 20 minutes. Each packet will earn you 3 euros. If you’re looking for a job as a car parker instead, stand in a busy car park near the train station or in the San Salvario neighborhood: when a car swings past welcome it in, with courtesy but also firmness. Be careful: in 2013 the municipality identified 129 fellow illegal parkers. As a hairband artisan, set your shop in front of one of Turin’s historical cafes. You will need a colored nylon bands, iron wire and a mannequin head. Prick the nylon bands at both edges and run a piece of iron wire through it. LEARN TO BEG EFFICIENTLY You will actually "earn" more if you are with a child or a pet. so in case you're alone, just adopt a dog from a local dog-pound. Guadagnerai di più in compagnia di un bambino o di un cane. Quindi, se sei solo, prendi in prestito un cane presso il canile più vicino.

SELL ROMANCE! Rumour has it that the local flower-vendors steal the flowers from cemeteries. We don't suggest you do that but this could be a start for you. The afternoon is when boredom hits them. Our small shopping centre is about to close and all around is the utter desert. At the beginning we had but one goal: take over our own space. Then an older educator told us there might be a better way. ‘Get down on the main square on a Sunday,’ he said, ‘Make the kids play and let the parents take a good look at you. Then wait. They will be the ones to offer you a place to set up and make yours. ’Today‘ Muretto’ is always open for those who don’t want to be alone. Here you can learn how to become a juggler, how to play the guitar, how to become a dancehall dancer, and if you’re good enough you can even produce your own record. Sure, funds are given every six months; one year we found out that that pipe, behind the window, is made of abestos. We’re waiting for them to come and remove it.’ For those born in the Vallette it’s less hard now than it was ten years ago. At the time you said you were from here and people would look down on you. Tearing down these walls of prejudice has been our greatest victory’.

Certo, i finanziamenti arrivano ogni sei mesi, un anno e abbiamo scoperto che quel tubo dietro la finestra è fatto di amianto e stiamo aspettando che vengano a rimuoverlo. Ma per chi nasce alle Vallette oggi è un po’ meno dura rispetto a dieci anni fa. Una volta quando dicevi che arrivavi da qui la gente si tappava il naso. Abbattere questi muri è stata la nostra grande vittoria".

The “Reale Società di ginnastica” was created in Torino in 1844 as a training place for soldiers, but soon became a place where every man could practice a new activity: indoor sport. At the end of 19th century, women and children were admitted in this first italian gym. Today in the same building 58 future circus performers train with ropes, trapeze, hoop, chinese pole, tightrope. It is a tough athletic training, eight hours in the gym everyday. People come from all over the world joined together by the same passion, but with different backgrounds. Damian, 21 years old, is a self-taught acrobat arrived in Torino from Chile to realize his childhood dream. On the other hand Ilaria, 25 years old, decided to join Flic school after a Degree in Linguistic Mediation in her city, Rome. Circus students hope to perform one day in the most prestigious theatres in Italy. However, circus is not officially recognised as artistic expression here, state subsidy are few and don't cover the 2000 euro annual tuition fee. This does not scare circus performers. Everyday you can see them entertaining drivers in line at traffic lights in Corso Casale. They get some money to cover the tuition fee and, mostly, they perform for their first audience.

La Reale Società di ginnastica nacque nel 1844 a Torino come luogo per l'allenamento dei soldati, ma presto si trasformò nel luogo in cui tutti potevano praticare un'attività innovativa: lo sport al coperto. A fine Ottocento anche le donne e i bambini furono ammessi in questa prima palestra italiana. Oggi in quelle stesse sale 58 futuri circensi si esercitano con corde, filo teso, trapezio, cerchio sospeso, clave e palo cinese. La preparazione fisica è intensa: otto ore in palestra ogni giorno con colleghi provenienti da tutto il mondo dotati della stessa passione, ma con percorsi diversi alle spalle. Damian, 21 anni, è un acrobata autodidatta arrivato dal Cile per realizzare il suo sogno di bambino. Ilaria, invece, ha scelto la Flic dopo essersi laureata in Mediazione Linguistica nella sua città natale Roma. I ragazzi del circo sperano di potersi esibire un giorno nei teatri più importanti d'Italia. Il circo, però, non è una forma artistica ufficialmente riconosciuta nel nostro paese, e per questo le sovvenzioni sono molto ridotte. I circensi non si fanno spaventare. Ogni giorno li vedi intrattenere gli automobilisti in coda ai semafori di Corso Casale, clavette che vorticano nell'aria e capriole sulle strisce pedonali. Raccolgono qualche soldo per coprire la retta, ma soprattutto, si esibiscono davanti al primo pubblico della loro vita.

The Circo Flic school is in Turin, in Via Magenta 11, near the Porta Nuova train station. The school lasts for two years, plus one year in which students train and improve in their instrument. Turin is the city with the highest number of Romani camps in Italy. The Lungo Stura Lazio settlement, one of the five unauthorised ones in Turin, is the biggest, hosting 120 families and totaling approximately 800 people. If you’re looking for a shelter and you don’t mind sleeping on a second hand bed this could be the place to go.

Torino è la città con il maggior numero di campi rom in Italia. L’insediamento di Lungo Stura Lazio, uno dei cinque abusivi della città, è il più grande e ospita 120 famiglie per un totale di circa 800 individui. Se cerchi un alloggio e non t’importa dormire su un letto di seconda mano il campo potrebbe fare al caso tuo.

You’ve just arrived in Turin. The motorway junction is right behind you, the murky river Stura runs at your feet. You can speed past it and go to an hotel in the city centre, or choose a more refined accommodation, like an inn on the hills. But if you don’t have the money you’d better pull up right after the bridge. Watch out for the big trucks, there’s many about and they travel fast. The housing complex is right in front of you, partially hidden by shrubs and piles of sweaters, nets, plastic, glass and iron bits, shoes. The structure is made of several buildings, all squat. It’s a far cry from the tall houses of the Ligurian Riviera. Around here bricks aren’t fashionable. The walls are made of doors and windows pieced together with clues and bits of iron wires. The neighbours are friendly and noisy. If it rains get yourself a pair of rubber boots: here you’ll find nothing but off road tracks. Maybe because of the proximity of the river, there’s no shortage of animals. You’ll see seagulls and grey herons flying past, a few dogs and many rats. You’ll get the chance to immerse completely in the local atmosphere by taking part in the residents’ main occupations: fishing in the pile of abandoned stuff at the settlement’s margins, building ingenious tools to scavenge in the trash bins and choosing material to burn on the stove, or walking miles just to find a glass of water.

Sei appena arrivato a Torino. Lo svincolo autostradale è alle tue spalle, il fiume Stura scorre torbido ai tuoi piedi. Puoi tirare dritto e alloggiare in un hotel in città oppure scegliere una sistemazione più ricercata, una pensione in collina. Ma se non hai soldi, allora ti conviene accostare poco dopo il ponte, sulla destra. Attento ai camion, ce ne sono parecchi e viaggiano veloci. Il complesso abitativo è di fronte a te, parzialmente nascosto da arbusti e mucchi di maglie, reti, pezzi di plastica, vetro, ferro, scarpe. La struttura è composta da più edifici, tutti bassi. Niente a che vedere con i palazzoni della Riviera Ligure. Qui i mattoni non vanno di moda. I muri sono formati da porte e finestre tenute insieme da chiodi e fil di ferro. I vicini sono accoglienti e rumorosi. Se dovesse piovere, procurati un paio di stivali di gomma: le strade sono sterrate. In questa zona della città, forse a causa della vicinanza con il fiume, gli animali non mancano. Potrai ammirare il passaggio di gabbiani, aironi cinerini, qualche cane e numerosi ratti. Avrai l’occasione d’immergerti ancora più a fondo nell’atmosfera della zona partecipando alle occupazioni di base dei residenti: pescare nel mucchio di oggetti abbandonati ai margini dell’insediamento, costruire ingegnosi dispositivi per rovistare nei bidoni della spazzatura e selezionare i materiali da bruciare nella stufa e fare centinaia di metri in cerca di un bicchiere d’acqua potabile.

The evacuation of the Lungo Stura Lazio camp started on 20 January 2014. Financed by the EU, the project’s aim is to resettle the local inhabitants in houses provided by the municipality. ‘I came to Italy in 1990. I found my first job at the general market, at the city’s outskirts. I was fired on my first day without explanation, right after unloading the truck. I waited for four hours at the bus stop before an Arab gave me a lift back to Turin. At the time we were just a few to have come here on the hunt for a job. I didn’t know the language, people avoided me. Many years have past but I’ll never forget those times. I went through all the stages of kitchen jobs: dishwasher, kitchen help, all the way up to becoming the Juventus F.C. chef. In 1999 the bank gave me a loan and I could start my first activity, a small kebab shop in the San Salvario quarter. At the time it was a rough area. I was the first to keep open at night. It seems impossible that it is now the city’s nightlife hub. Things went well: in the space of a few years the Horas Social Food project had grown to the point of hiring twenty employees and opening three sales point and one butcher’s. Cooking is my way of conveying my culture, of bringing people together. My project is an example of successful integration, even if Turin remains tight-lipped, and many continue to look at foreigners with suspicion. I call my Italian clients ‘niggers’: I want to turn the situation around, to tear down the barriers. I ask them if they came to this country on a rubber boat, were washed ashore or something. I want to surprise, to disorient them. If you do that the racist words lose their importance, they almost become a joke. Bahaa Ewis “Bibo”, 43 years old, Kebab seller

“Sono arrivato in Italia nel 1990. Il primo lavoro l’ho trovato ai mercati generali, fuori città. Sono stato licenziato il primo giorno, senza spiegazioni, dopo aver scaricato il camion. Ho aspettato quattro ore alla fermata dell’autobus prima che un arabo mi caricasse in auto e mi riportasse a Torino. All’epoca eravamo in pochi ad arrivare in Italia per cercare lavoro. Non conoscevo la lingua, la gente mi evitava. Anche se sono passati diversi anni, quel periodo non lo dimentico. In cucina, ho segnato tutte le tappe: lavapiatti, aiuto-cuoco, fino a diventare il cuoco della Juventus. Nel 1999 la banca mi ha concesso un prestito e ho aperto la mia prima attività, un piccolo negozio di kebab nel quartiere di San Salvario. Al tempo era una zona malfamata, sono stato il primo a tenere aperto di notte. Sembra impossibile che adesso sia diventata il centro della vita notturna della città. Le cose sono andate bene e in pochi anni il progetto Horas Social Food è cresciuto tanto da assumere venti dipendenti e aprire altri tre punti vendita e una macelleria. La cucina è il mio modo di trasmettere cultura, integrare persone. Il mio progetto è un esempio d’integrazione riuscita, anche se Torino resta comunque una città chiusa, e molte persone continuano a guardare gli stranieri con diffidenza. Chiamo i clienti italiani “negri” perché voglio ribaltare la situazione, superare le barriere. Gli chiedo se ci sono arrivati in gommone, in Italia. Li voglio sorprendere, disorientare. I termini razzisti, così, perdono d’importanza, diventano quasi uno scherzo”.

L’uomo si fa chiamare Osama bin Laden, ma più che un terrorista si considera un benefattore per chi lotta per lasopravvivenza a Torino. Ti dirà di andare al mercato di Porta Palazzo se cerchi un vestito per 50 centesimi di euro o frutta e verdura avanzata. “Molte persone vengono qui per raccogliere avanzi di cibo”, dice il quarantaquattrenne spazzino Ezio Simone, secondo cui si accumulano circa 40 quintali di materiale ogni giorno sull’asfalto di Porta Palazzo. Prima di mangiare un frutto caduto a terra, ricorda di fartelo lavare in un bar o in una pizzeria vicini. Per pranzare, a cinque minuti a piedi della Piazza della Repubblica c’è anche la Casa Accoglienza Cottolengo, nella via Vittorio Andreis, 26. Dalle 10.30 alle 12.30 ci si può anche mettere in fila per le medicine. Per cenare, invece, Osama Bin Laden consiglia di andare a Via Ormea 119 agli Asili Notturni. Gli indirizzi migliori per dormire si trovano nel libro sacro di Koroai Vasile, un quarantaduenne disoccupato che ha preso nota di tutte le case di accoglienza di Torino. Il migliore probabilmente è il Sermig, in Piazza Borgo Dora, 61, un'organizzazione che dà un letto ai senzatetto, uomini e donne, trecentosessantacinque giorni all’anno.

I’ve got all kinds of advice: where to eat, sleep and find medications.’ This man goes by the name ‘Osama bin Laden’ but more than a terrorist he sees himself as a benefactor, a blessing for all those who fight to survive in Turin. If you’re looking for a 50 eurocent piece of clothing, fruit or vegetable leftovers he’ll tell you to go to Porta Palazzo, the openair market. ‘Many come here to collect what would otherwise go to waste,’ says Ezio Simone, a 40 years-old street cleaner. According to him about 40 tons of edible material daily lies on the ground of Porta Palazzo. Before eating a fruit fallen off from a stall remember to ask a bar or pizzeria to give it a wash. For a meal there’s Casa Accoglienza Cottolengo (the Shelter Home) on via Vittorio Andreis, 26, five minutes’ walk from Piazza della Repubblica. From 10.30 to 12.30 you can join the queue to get your medications. For dinner Osama bin Laden suggests Asili Notturni, the Night Shelter on Via Ormea 119. The best places to sleep are in the sacred book of Koroai Vasile, a 42 years old unemployed, who has every single shelter home in Turin written down. Coriander Rice (2 portions)

INGREDIENTS 4 tomatoes 1 onion 1 teaspoon of olive oil 1 teaspoon of salt 50 cl of water 300 grams of rice Coriander

INGREDIENTS 2 leaves of coriander 3 tomatoes 1 quarter of a chilly 1 teaspoon of olive oil 1 loaf of bread

PREPARATION In Porta Palazzo there are several kiosks selling readymade food. Ask one of them for a bowl and a bit of rice. Cut the onion and cook it slowly in olive oil. Add the rice and stir for one to two minutes. Then add boiling water and the tomatoes. Add some salt and cook slowly for another seven minutes. Add coriander and stir for another bit. Cook for eight to nine more minutes. RISO AL CORIANDOLO (2 PORZIONI) Ingredienti 1 cucchiaino di sale ½ litro di acqua bollente 300gr Riso coriandolo a piacimento 4 pomodori 1 cipolla 1 cucchiaio d’olio d’oliva PREPARAZIONE A Porta Palazzo ci sono diversi chioschi che vendono cibo pronto. Chiedi a uno di loro una pentola e un po’ di riso, che farai bollire. Trita la cipolla e soffriggila con l’olio d’oliva, a fuoco basso. Aggiungi il riso e mescola bene per circa uno o due minuti. Poi aggiungi l’acqua bollente e i pomodori piccati. Aggiusta di sale e cuoci a fuoco lento per circa 7 minuti, a pentola chiusa. Aggiungi il coriandolo tritato e mescola un po’. Completa la cottura per altri 8 o 9 minuti.
