TOM DUDZICK is one of the few playwrights who makes a living at it. His first play, a Christmas tale called Greetings!, opened at New York’s John Houseman Theatre and starred Darren McGavin and Greg Edelman. It is now a holiday favorite across the country and has had well over one hundred productions. His next play, Over the Tavern, the first in a semi-autobiographical trilogy, has over two hundred productions under its belt, with many box office records broken throughout the U.S. The Irish adaptation, Over the Pub, also broke the box office record at Cork Arts Theatre in Ireland. Tom has had eight plays to date, most published by Playscripts, Inc. He was recently honored with a memorial plaque embedded in front of his boyhood home in Buffalo. And an even greater honor – he was once a question on Jeopardy!

T

his play is loosely based upon my experiences putting up my first New York play, “Greetings!” which starred Darren McGavin and was produced by the late, legendary producer, Arthur Cantor. The character of director Mike Policzek is faithfully based upon my good friend, Dennis Zacek, former Artistic Director of Chicago’s Victory Gardens Theatre, who was hired by Mr. Cantor to direct “Greetings!” The remaining characters are composites of colorful people I’ve known on and off the stage. Except for Jerry, the starry-eyed playwright. He is, for the most part, me. This play was created in response to my wife’s question, “Why don’t you write something that’s just funny?” My association with Rose Pearson and Circle Theatre has been the most fun I’ve had with my plays without actually attending the theatre! It’s incredibly rewarding to hear, year after year, that so many people are getting such enjoyment from something I created halfway across the country. It’s a unique and delightful working relationship. And I finally got to meet Director Harry Parker in person. And where, of all places, but in New York City’s Westway Diner, which you’ll hear mentioned several times in the play. With his lovely wife we had a lot of laughs, and I so appreciated his weird dedication to getting all of my plays onto the Circle stage!”

– Tom Dudzick

DIRECTOR NOTES

10

’ve been very fortunate to direct 14 productions at Circle Theatre. I’ve enjoyed all of them, but I consider it a special accomplishment that Don’t Talk to the Actors marks the fifth play by Tom Dudzick that I’ve been privileged to direct here. The previous ones are Over the Tavern, The Last Mass at Saint Casimir’s, Hail, Mary!, and Miracle on South Division Street. That list doesn’t even include the staged reading of another play of Tom’s (King O’ the Moon) that I also directed here at Circle. Why do I like Tom’s work so much? Well, his plays are very, very funny – but they also always have something insightful to say about the human condition. You can tell that Tom started in the theatre as an actor, because he writes absolutely delicious roles for actors to play - roles that are hilarious, but still quite real and truthful. His plays are honest. Take this one, for example. While it might seem to be “just” a very funny backstage comedy, it’s based on his own early experiences in the theatre, and the tensions created by the clash of egos and agendas is universally recognizable. Actors and audiences respond to the truth with which Tom fills his plays, in between the delicious bursts of laughter they create. Thanks for all those wonderful nights (and matinees) in the theatre, Tom – and keep writing! - Harry Parker

Directed by Robin Armstrong Featuring: Lisa Fairchild*, Lauren Ferebee, and Liz J. Millea* Next in the season is The Taming, Lauren Gunderson’s all female “power-play”. This raucous political comedy will have both parties laughing in the aisles. Hilarity ensues when two political opposites wake up and discover themselves locked in a hotel room with a beauty queen. Following her past Circle productions of Exit, Pursued By A Bear (2013) and I and You (2015), The Taming brings to the stage the startling humor and rich roles for women that Ms. Gunderson skillfully creates. * Actors’ Equity Association
