COLLEGE CORNER Poston receives scholarship

Kourtney Poston of Union has been awarded a Letitia Pate Evans Scholarship by Agnes Scott College for the 2010-2011 academic year. This Letitia Pate Evans Scholarship totals $68,000 over four years. Those selected to be Evans Scholars have excelled in the classroom and in leadership, character and personal achievement. Overall, they have achieved high marks in their GPA and class standing. In addition, Evans Scholars have demonstrated balanced extracurricular experience, which suggests they will contribute to life at the college. Cox earns degree

Students on dean’s list

Morehead State University recently released its dean’s list for the 2009 fall semester. Local students who made the list include Jeremy Bach of Walton; and Julie

Anderson, Kelly Gruber, Chelsea Guinn, Meghan Murphy, Holly Nibert, Tiffany Scheid and Kyle Yarawsky, all of Burlington. Trinkle inducted

Conner Senior High School graduate and Transylvania University firstyear student Hannah Marie Trinkle was inducted into Transylvania’s chapter of Alpha Lambda Delta, a national honor society that recognizes academic excellence. To be included, students must have maintained a 3.5 or higher GPA and be in the top 20 percent of their class during their first year or term of college. Trinkle is the daughter of Stanford and Roxanne Trinkle of Petersburg.

Edwards dances for Xavier University

The Xavier University Dance Team, which includes Union resident Samantha Edwards, was named fifth in the nation in the NDA Collegiate Championship in Florida in April. The team competes in the Open Division I. During the school year, the squad practices eight hours a

week. In addition, they do numerous performances and fundraisers. Team members are also required to do an additional hour of cardio conditioning each week. They have performed at Reds games, Xavier Club Football games, XU men’s and women’s basketball games and area high school basketball games. Coaches Steve Chapla and Erica Carey lead the team. Edwards is a freshman natural sciences major at XU. She is the daughter of Richard and Jody Edwards.

Immigration ‘jail’

Jacob Baldwin and Aria Alimardini, Goodridge Elementary School students, are guarded by Zach Perrin from Conner High School in the Ellis Island jail. The students were taking part in an immigration activity at the school located in Hebron.
