Partner Newsletter Summer 2017 Education, Apprenticeships and Professional Standards Update

Colin Huffen MCIMSPA Head of Education colin.huffen@cimspa.co.uk •

General education policy updates. • The Queens’ speech, government initiatives and priorities. Very little was said regarding education, it is likely the manifesto pledges still remain with a clear focus on further and technical education. The introduction of ‘T’ levels and apprenticeship reform will still remain a priority. • Within the Department for Education there was one significant change with Robert Halfon leaving his post as Minister for Apprenticeships and Skills to be replaced by Rt Hon Anne Milton MP. • The grading of GCSE’s is changing from A to G to 1-9, DfE have released a factsheet to explain the changes.

The results of the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) were published in June. The TEF is the rating system for Higher Education Institutions and works on a Bronze, Silver, Gold rating. The full results can be found here.

Sport and Physical Activity Policy updates Want to know which CIMSPA partners have registered to deliver and assess the new apprenticeship standards? Only training providers listed on the governments ROTAP register will be eligible to deliver apprenticeships. We’re pleased that several our skills development partners have registered, these include: Babcock Training, Future Fit, ICON Training, Lifetime Training and Focus Training. You can find the full list here. Only assessment organisations listed on the governments ROAAO register will be eligible to assess the apprenticeship standards. We are pleased that several our AO partners can be found on the register, click here for a full list. Post 16 skills plan lobbying action. Our employer board (Professional Development Board (PDB)) have asked us to continue to lobby for Sport and Physical Activity to be a specifically named route, we will continue our lobbying work with our partners ukactive. Thank you to those of you who gave us letters of support, they will be delivered to the new Minister for Skills and Apprenticeships.

Partner Newsletter Summer 2017 Development of Professional Standards At the last quarterly PDB meeting the industry leading group made three decisions regarding professional standards. 1. They signed off the content for the roles of Gym Instructor, Personal Trainer, Lifeguard, Swimming Teacher and Recreation Assistant. We’re excited to be publishing the standards for these roles very soon. 2. They took the decision there should only be one standard for the role of Group Exercise Instructor, deciding against having a separate standard for those instructors that only deliver from a pre-choreographed plan (thank you to all of you that participated in the vote there). 3. They agreed the priorities for standards development for the next two quarters. Partner Newsletter Summer 2017 Apprenticeships Update The reforms around apprenticeship programmes have not been without challenge for our sector and many others. We have had to resubmit proposed standards to the Institute for Apprenticeships (IFA) several times over the past months to meet with their changing requirements during the reform process. We are pleased to report that we are starting to make some headway towards gaining approval for the standards submitted to date. We envisage that working alongside our new relationship managers and the deputy director of the IFA will enable this project to move forwards in earnest and we will soon see a range of new apprenticeship standards available for our sector. More standards will undoubtedly follow as CIMSPA’s work progresses over the coming months. In addition, we are delighted to announce, CIMSPA have agreed with the IFA that we will develop an offer to be the End Point Assessment (EPA) agency for the sector. This means CIMSPA will provide quality assurance services for apprenticeships in the sector, we will work closely with the organisations providing assessment to apprentices. We have started to develop the policies and processes and will be looking to recruit several quality assurance specialists in the Autumn. Partner Newsletter Summer 2017 Higher Education Partnerships Update Now that we have developed successful partnerships for employers and training providers, our attention can now turn to the education sector. Employers regularly inform CIMSPA of the challenges they face in recruiting graduates as they can’t easily assess the content that the graduate has studied, how this relates to the job role they are applying for and moreover, the gaps in employability skills from the graduates themselves.

Danielle Peel MCIMSPA Project and Policy Manager danielle.peel@cimspa.co.uk

Employers have asked for employability-focused endorsement and recognition pathways for sport and physical activity related degree programmes. CIMSPA is excited to announce that it will begin developing this programme with its first cohort of Higher Education Partners (HE Partners) from September.

This pilot will take place over the next two years and will also develop: • • • •

Relationships between employers and higher education institutions Greater promotion and access for students and employers to graduate/intern/employment/volunteer opportunities Employers providing guest lectures on degree programmes Relationships between employers and students

CIMSPA is looking for employer partners to engage in the HE pilot, please help us by completing a short survey (6 questions) to tell us more. Click HERE to access the survey.

Partner Newsletter Summer 2017 Useful Resources Disabled sport - “is there a level playing field?” Children’s charity Variety has just released new research into the barriers that disabled children face in keeping active. What’s noteworthy is that the anxieties and fears of the children themselves as to how they might participate in sport tops the list – above cost or infrastructure/facility suitability issues. Ensuring all kids leave primary school as swimmers Swim England’s Swim Group (formed after the Sporting Future strategy) has issued a report looking at the challenges that schools face in delivering high quality swimming and water safety lessons. Most of the recommendations are education-focused, but the report has clear views on how our sector should provide the pool access to enable these vital life skills to be learned. Getting girls active – reducing gender inequality English girls are among some of the least active in the world, with only 16% meeting physical activity guidelines. This 4-page “quick read” policy briefing looks at the problem and possible solutions. “Don’t bump the bump” (but do exercise) The UK’s Chief Medical Officers have jointly released new advice on physical exercise for expectant mothers. The latest evidence suggests pregnant women should carry out around 150 minutes of “moderate intensity” activity every week. GP referrals – an opportunity for private gyms More and more people are being signposted by their GPs to their local leisure centre for health, weight management and rehabilitation schemes. But, few privately owned gyms offer such services. Jenny Patrickson from Active IQ offers a four step programme to grab a share of this work. Sport, dance and young people’s wellbeing: what works? The What Works Centre for Wellbeing has published new international evidence on the impact sport, dance and physical activity have on the wellbeing of 15-24 year olds. Key findings include how yoga provided strong evidence of their effectiveness at reducing feelings of anxiety, depression, and anger, and how empowering young girls through peer-supported exercise has a positive effect on their self-belief.
