Dear ice hockey friends! We welcome you to brief introduction with Latvian ice hockey. We are pleased that you are interested in hockey of our country on the banks of the Baltic Sea – Latvia. In this year we are celebrating 80th anniversary of Latvian Ice Hockey. The first important steps in the development of ice hockey in Latvia were taken 79 years ago, in winter of 1929/30, when the Workers’ Sports Society decided to play hockey. Riga and Liepaja were the first Latvian cities where ice hockey was played. Latvia joined the world ice hockey family in 1931. Since then we have grown and developed together with whole hockey world. Since Latvian ice hockey team joined World Championship Pool A in 1997 we have played in all IIHF World Championships and in last three Olympic Games in Salt Lake City in 2002, Turin in 2006 and on this year in Vancouver. Experience, youth and passion are the key words highlighting the qualities of the Latvian National Ice Hockey team in Mannheim. I do wish a good luck and a successful performance to our players! Let the effort and hard work invested by the players, their coaches, doctors, assistants and supporters bring good results in Mannheim and a lot of pleasure to Latvia. Ice hockey is one of the most popular sports in Latvia. We have very enthusiastic fans, which follow and support our team all over the world. We were happy to host IIHF 2006 World Championship in Riga – in the city of ice hockey fans. We would like to say thank you to all our fans for they endless support and wish to all of us good luck in the future games! KIROVS LIPMANS PRESIDENT LATVIAN ICE HOCKEY FEDERATION
