GLOBAL LEARNING FACULTY DEVELOPMENT FALL 2014

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN GLOBAL LEARNING AT PURDUE “ WE MUST LEARN

We strive to raise the bar and advance quality-added, experiential, and transformative learning by undergraduate students at Purdue University and beyond.

TO LIVE TOGETHER

We do this with an evidence-based systemic approach by:

PERISH TOGETHER

1. Collecting comparative data in key areas relating to Intercultural Learning at Purdue 2. Enhancing the resources of CIE by assisting faculty and instructors in implementing and assessing the mapping of the embedded CORE outcomes in Intercultural Knowledge and Effectiveness and Global Citizenship/Civic Engagement plus Global Learning 3. Facilitating a fact-based approach which supports an emphasis on improving rather than reacting to problems 4. Introducing tailored and targeted faculty development initiatives

In 2013, the context of Global Learning at Purdue changed significantly with President Mitch Daniels’ “Big Moves” initiative along with other efforts related to intercultural learning. The push to meet the ESL needs of international students, to foster relationships between national and international students, and to significantly increase study abroad opportunities forged new and increased opportunities. In addition, the call for sound assessment of these new internationalization efforts along with developing the strategies and processes to evaluate the embedded outcomes of Intercultural Knowledge and Global Citizenship/Social Responsibility paved the way to bring internationalization to scale on campus. Purdue moved from simply responding to crises and reliance on anecdotal evidence to the adoption of sound theory and research-based practices. We are on a mission to discover the best practices for the internationalizing a R1 university with over 9,000 international students. What we discovered at conferences and premier profession development opportunities is that not only has no one has figured out how to internationalize an R1 university, but what we were currently doing at Purdue is at the forefront

among our peer institutions. As evidence of this pioneering national and international leadership at Purdue, in 2014, we will personally make 7 presentations at national and international conferences such as the Professional and Organizational Development Conference, the Society for Intercultural Education, Training and Research Conference, the Assessment Institute, the Summer Institute for Intercultural Communication, and the Association of International Education Administrators. We will contribute to two other presentations, posters or publications by Purdue faculty

Understanding that Purdue has an opportunity to be a pioneering leader in Tier 1 institutional internationalization, provides us with the motivation to seek out the best practices based on sound theory and good research. We are not satisfied making token efforts based on poor practices and no theoretical basis or research foundation. We identify the best practices, understand sound theory, and study the research. We learn about the best practices at our peer institutions. We also discover what good internationalization work is functioning at small liberal arts colleges. At the same time, we network on the Purdue campus to begin to understand the wide range and scope of what is happening independently among all the silos. One way to motivate faculty is to provide them with resources that are quickly and easily implemented to meet their learning goals, outcomes, and objectives. Our goal is to build a “tool shed” of resources and teaching tools for faculty and staff, based on sound theory and evidence-based research.

MISSION STATEMENT CIE’s Global Learning Faculty Development mission is to assist Purdue instructors to be stewards in optimizing and transforming classroom teaching and learning by integrating global issues, activities, and experiences into class content and learning objectives, so that all students, international and national alike, have a venue for unique, realistic global experiences and global learning.
