Keeping Traffic Moving on Bridge Bundle Project

In November 2019, Cianbro began work on the Hampden Bridge Bundle project in Hampden, Maine, replacing eight bridges and rehabilitating a ninth along the northbound and southbound lanes on a four-mile stretch of Interstate 95. Last fall, the team substantially completed the northbound work, and installed the final temporary diversion on the project before completing the demolition of the final original southbound bridge. This winter, the team continues its work on installing the permanent southbound bridges, which are scheduled to be open to traffic this summer.

“The team has worked well together, and this project has certainly required a lot of coordination,” said Nate Frazier, Senior Project Engineer. “One of the biggest challenges with this job site is that we had nine work locations plus four temporary bridge locations. Being that spread out, our team did a great job of overcoming that logistical challenge, ensuring we got equipment, materials, and our team members around the sites efficiently.”

The Hampden Bridge Bundle was also the first Cianbro project to utilize the company’s new Link-Belt 228 HSL 130- ton Lattice Boom Crawler Crane. This new crane enabled the team to self-perform work that would otherwise have been contracted out, and it also assembles quickly and easily, adding to the efficiency of the project. The team also utilized the Last Planner System™ to help manage the project and keep the team on schedule and on budget.
