Welcome New Board Member Massy Williams

Please join us in welcoming Massandje (Massy) Williams to the Church Farm School Board of Directors. Originally from the Ivory Coast, Massy currently resides in Newtown Square with her husband and two sons and is the Global Head of the Security Lending program at Vanguard. In this role, she has responsibility for the oversight of trading, operations, IT/systems, risk management and board reporting. Massy is a CFS charterholder and has a master's in management science from Catholic University in Lille, France, as well as an MBA with a concentration in finance from Pace University. In addition to her current role at Vanguard, she serves as the lead of the company's Strategy and Finance Learning and Development Committee and TEAM Vanguard, which supports the Vanguard Education Initiative. With such an already full schedule, we are so pleased that Massy is lending her expertise to CFS. Q: How did you learn about CFS? A: As the mother of two boys, CFS' values immediately resonated with me and matched those that my husband and I try to instill in our boys: respect, integrity, responsibility and brotherhood. I am humbled by the privilege to help CFS drive its mission of empowering young men by preparing them with academic ability and tools to be successful. Q: How do you hope to contribute toward our mission? A: In addition to helping the board carry out its fiduciary responsibilities, I am committed to working with others toward the common goal of providing the best possible education for a diverse group of students and preparing them to be the leaders of tomorrow. I am passionate about this mission because it perfectly aligns with my life's purpose of bringing the best out of people and helping others to tap into their full potential.

Gala Chair Minnie Kirwin Excited for an Evening of Broadway

The CFS Singers will perform a number of Broadway musicals at the Gala, as will the full CFS Choir and the Main Line a cappella group The Tonics. Under the able guidance of chairpersons Minnie and John Kirwin, along with the support of the Gala committee and CFS Development team, this year's "Broadway Bound" event on May 1 aims to raise significant financial support for the school, including helping send our choir to Carnegie Hall in spring 2016. Read Minnie's recent blog on what attendees can expect to hear, see (and taste) on May 1 at the Wayne Art Center! It's not too late to RSVP! You can register or make a donation online at www.gocfs.net/gala or contact Suzette Baird!

College Readiness Panel Presented to CFS Leadership Council

Church Farm School hosted a "College Readiness for Underserved Students" networking breakfast and panel discussion on April 9 for current and prospective members of its Leadership Council. Panelists included Kwasi Gyambibi '96, the coordinator for the Center for Academic Programs/Student Support Services on the Stamford campus of the University of Connecticut; Mary Klein, a retired school counselor who currently serves on the Board of Directors for Schools that Can; and Tiffany Scott, the school's director of college guidance who formerly served as an admissions officer at the University of Delaware and as the McNair Scholars Program Coordinator there. The discussion was moderated by CFS history teacher Doug Magee. Panelists discussed the challenges high school students face when applying and then attending college. In particular, they focused on barriers for first generation and low-income students, such as:       

Limited financial resources Campus acclimation Family support and participation Work obligations Lower level of academic preparation Access to college culture Financial literacy

Celebrate Mother's Day at the Spring Choral Concert, Featuring Returning Alumni

Help us celebrate CFS Choral Director Gary Gress' 25 years of choral excellence (and Mother's Day!) with a spring choral concert featuring the Upper School Choir, Middle School Choir, CFS Singers and returning choral alumni! The concert will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 10 in the school's Chapel of the Atonement and will last a little more than an hour. More than 20 alumni will join the choir for two songs! We hope you can join us and honor Gary's incredible contributions to our music program!

Stay Up-to-Date on Spring Athletics Schedule

Spring sports are in full swing, and there are many ways to keep up with the schedules. 1. Subscribe to Athletic Director Greg Thompson's "This week in CFS Athletics" email newsletter. 2. Visit Schedule Star for upcoming competitions. 3. Follow @cfsathletics on Twitter. Friday's varsity and JV lacrosse games were live-streamed via Bleachers. Missed the game? They are available to view online here.

Erwin Roeser '41, First Alum on CFS Board, Passes We learned today that Erwin Roeser, Class of 1941, passed away on March 29. Erwin was a distinguished member of the CFS choir, and served on our Board of Directors for many years (he is pictured here with Shirley Shreiner in 2012). Our sincerest condolences to the Roeser family. Roeser will be honored during the Memorial Service at Alumni Weekend, along with other alums who passed away this year.

CFS Students Visit Art Museum

Thanks to CFS Board Member John Pickering for donating tickets to the Philadelphia Museum of Art which enabled 25 of our students plus art teachers Aaron Schnittman and Kevin Korb to visit recently. The group was treated to a guided tour of the "Represent: 200 Years of African American Art" exhibit, plus they participated in self-tours of the Perlman Building and the Impressionist Collection. Look for future E-Lerts to arrive on a monthly basis. Please share the email addresses of friends and/or fellow classmates who might also wish to receive these updates. As always, thanks for your time and interest.
