2015–2016 ANNUAL REPORT

A FIRM FOUNDATION

From the Head of School THE THEME OF THIS ANNUAL REPORT ARISES OUT OF A CHURCH hymn that begins, “How firm a foundation ye saints of the Lord is laid for your faith in His excellent word!” Perhaps already the melody is popping into the heads of more than a few readers. Resting as we do on faith’s firm foundation and the resulting blessings that have been continually received since our founding in 1918, the work of Church Farm School remains rooted in following God’s Word, more precisely the Golden Rule of loving our neighbors as ourselves. We seek to grow stronger in this manner, extending our mission, year after year. I imagine that as The Rev. Dr. Charles Wesley Shreiner laid out his vision of what God was calling him to do, he also knew that even though times and circumstances had changed greatly as a result of WWI, and that his idea of a school for boys would continue to face challenges ahead, it would succeed because it was grounded in God’s plan. Almost 100 years into this great and noble endeavor, we remain committed to his faithful vision of providing an education to those who might otherwise remain sidelined at the margins of our society. We remain determined to continue this journey for generations of boys still to come and the promise their talents hold for promoting and developing our common wealth. This good work, faithful to God’s Word, is only possible because of the dedication and shared purpose of so many. We are deeply grateful to you, the men and women, families, companies, foundations and institutions whose names are listed herein, and to numerous others who have in their own generation passed to us their gift of time, talent, treasure and confidence that we would continue to move this school ahead. Moreover, you have helped nourish and sustain a devoted faculty and staff, who worked tirelessly and unselfishly over the past year to see our school gain reaccreditation and set our program on this course that will propel our boys forward into significant college experiences and beyond. As a result, our mission to serve is now reaching new and greater heights. Together, we will continue our joyful singing of God’s praises and make good on this exceptional work, building as we are on a firm foundation. With abiding gratitude,

THE REVEREND EDMUND K. SHERRILL II

From the Chairman of the Board MY WIFE, JOANNE, AND I WERE IN NEW YORK RECENTLY WITH our five-year-old granddaughter, taking her to just a few of the many wonderful attractions the Big Apple has to offer. Included on our stops were the Central Park Zoo and the New York Public Library (she wanted to see both the live and the stone lions).

Board of Directors In these venerable public institutions are places where the names of private benefactors are inscribed. Sometimes it’s an entire building or room, other times a small plaque or brick on a walkway. I got to thinking how each name told the same story: that someone believed enough in the importance of these institutions to support them. Someone believed that this zoo, this library, could make a difference in the lives of others—and even if public funds paid most of the freight, there was still a place for a private donor to help. Church Farm School, unlike the Central Park Zoo or the New York Public Library, is not a public institution receiving public funds. It therefore relies all the more on the generosity of private donors to accomplish its noble mission: the education of young men of ability and promise whose circumstances would ordinarily keep them from receiving a college preparatory education in a boarding environment. In this annual report, you will see the evidence of the extraordinary generosity on the part of those who believe in this mission. Institutions become great when they serve a larger purpose. Church Farm School may not be as well known as the New York Public Library, but I believe it is every bit as great. And your generosity ensures that greatness. Thank you for believing in our larger purpose.

A Year of Extraordinary Accomplishments The 2015-16 school year was marked by so many memorable moments that it’s difficult to single out our favorites, but the following four really stand apart and are a testament to the commitment of our faculty, staff and students. HONOR CODE SIGNING Following years of hard work by our community to establish an Honor Code—along with an Honor Council comprised of faculty, staff and students to keep the Code at the top of everyone’s mind—we held an “Honor Day” in early November. Honor Day was the culmination of a month of activities organized by the school’s Honor Council and included a Chapel service during which everyone in the community signed their name to a book containing the inscribed Code. The book resides in a beautiful cherry display case built by former Woodshop teacher John Ceschan in the reception area of the school, with a large framed print of the Code on the wall above it. Each member of the community also received a business card-sized copy of the Code to keep. We are so proud of this endeavor, which was largely driven by students with great support from faculty, especially Ms. Rabi Young.

of Church Farm School, I am not “Asonlya member an individual but part of a greater brotherhood. In this brotherhood, I aspire to a higher level of integrity by taking responsibility for my actions and those of others. I will not lie, cheat or steal, and I will respect myself and others around me as a leader and a follower. I will positively address any violations of this creed.”

CFS CHOIR AT CARNEGIE HALL Another incredible event, years in the making, was the CFS Choir’s performance of Mozart’s “Solemn Vespers” on April 4 at the renowned Carnegie Hall in New York City. The choir was selected to sing as part of the Masterworks Festival Chorus, along with the Scottsdale Christian Academy Concert Choir with able support from the New York City Chamber Orchestra. A busload of faculty, staff, parents, alumni, board members and friends (pictured at left) traveled from Exton for the performance, while many local to New York City also joined us for this memorable evening. Kudos to Choral Director Gary Gress for creating an opportunity of such stature for our students, and to the CFS Choir for their months of preparation leading up to this unforgettable moment. An audio recording of the performance is available by request to development@gocfs.net.

MIDDLE STATES ASSOCIATION REACCREDITATION

have been privileged to witness the excitement “We of the work you do at Church Farm School. You

should take great pride in creating a unique program that is magical for the young men who might otherwise be left behind. The work you do is life changing, and world changing. I wonder where we find these great young minds that you have awakened in future years. What genius and creative spirits are inside these walls now? How will these students weave their own special fabric of greatness? What will be their gifts to the world?”

These are words that Mr. David Mullen, Middle States Association visiting team chair, used to sum up an intense four-day evaluation visit at our school in November 2015. Mr. Mullen and his team met with dozens of CFS faculty, students, parents and trustees; observed classes; attended assembly and toured cottages; in addition to analyzing reams of self-study data and analysis completed by our internal Planning Team, led by Doug Magee and Krista Peterson (pictured top right). We are proud to announce that Church Farm School has been reaccredited by the Middle States Association through 2023. This was the culmination of nearly a year and a half of self-study and preparation by so many people from the CFS community. Thank you to everyone who participated and supported these efforts! RECOGNITION OF SERVICE PROGRAM At Chapel prior to departure for Thanksgiving Break, Church Farm School officially launched its Recognition of Service Program, honoring employees with 5+ years of service to the school with a commissioned platter of a hand-painted scene of the south campus by former CFS parent Jane Choc (pictured bottom right). The Program was established to recognize and thank faculty and staff members for their contribution and dedication to Church Farm School; its mission, history and enduring work. The school community will gather annually to honor and congratulate those members of faculty and staff who may be celebrating a particular length of service milestone. The program is an opportunity for the school community to reflect on the school’s rich heritage, one built upon “the life and labor of many,” and enculturate newer employees with the legends and stories that have made Church Farm School the special educational institution it is today.

SHANE CARTER ’17

Griffins Near and Far: Building a Global Community at CFS MOHAMMED EMUN ’17, LANSDOWNE, PA Mohammed Emun matriculated to Church Farm School as a 7th grader two years after his older brother, Bappe, arrived on campus. The boys had a teacher who saw a lot of promise in them, and believed they’d benefit from an education at CFS. “I was upset at first, because I was leaving all of my friends and thought it would be all preppy rich kids. I was surprised and really happy how diverse it is.” Emun appreciates the seriousness of both the faculty and students here. “My public school peers didn’t care that much about school, they didn’t have the college mindset.” Emun is extremely active in school life—he participates in the Multicultural Club, Greystock News and Greystock Magazine clubs, Interact Club, Honor Club and has been involved with both the Student Congress and Honor Council since he came to CFS. He enjoys Student Congress because it “helps me help my grade and see what we can reach for.” Emun says M-Club allows a safe space for critical discussions about diversity. A founding member of the school’s Honor Council, Emun is very proud to have been a part of the school’s first school-wide signing of the CFS Honor Code, held in November (see story on page 3).

ZEESHAN ZAHID ’16

JOHN BOL AJAK ’19

SHANE CARTER ’17, HARTFORD, CT Shane Carter came to Church Farm School as a 9th grader, and wasn’t sure what to expect. “I initially thought of the school as a really good place to be and a place to have fun. Now I think it’s a blessing and chance for opportunity. CFS has opened up my eyes to the world and the opportunities for my future.” Shane appreciates the bonds that boarding school life enable him to form, with both students and adults. “Brotherhood is a key value here at the school and living with my classmates helps us understand each other a lot more. Also, this means our teachers are a lot more available to help.” In particular, Shane is close with his advisor, Director of Admission Brandon Zeigler. “Mr. Zeigler has been here for me even before I stepped on campus and he continues to help me with any problems I may have. He is like a father figure for me here at school.” When he’s not playing soccer, wrestling (he went to regionals this year) or running track, Shane enjoys hanging out with his friends and working for Sodexo (the school’s caterer). He hopes to go to University of Connecticut for engineering and believes CFS is putting him on the path to getting there.

JAMAAL AW YOONIS ’16

ZEESHAN ZAHID ’16, CARTERET, NJ Zeeshan Zahid was born in Pakistan, and grew up on the same street in Carteret, New Jersey, as Khizar Qureshi ’15 and Hamzah Qureshi ’16, two brothers who also came to Church Farm School as a result of their involvement in the NJ SEEDS program. He started at CFS his freshman year, and he admits the transition was stressful. “Everything was scheduled for you, even sports.” He was also extremely shy, which made the experience that much more scary.

Ultimately, Zeeshan embraced the experience and thrived. “It opened me up to so many different perspectives, and helped me manage not just academics, but socially, too.” Zeeshan was the vice president of Student Congress, editor of Greystock News, member of the Honor Club and named a QuestBridge College Prep Scholar in his junior year. He is attending Rutgers University, where he plans to double major in biology and creative writing. “I will never have anything like this again in life. I’m grateful for every experience I’ve had at CFS—they’ve all shaped me in some way.” JOHN BOL AJAK ’19, SOUTH SUDAN, AFRICA When asked on the last day of the school year if he was heading home to Nairobi for the summer, John Ajak replied, “Church Farm School is my home.” You probably couldn’t ask for a better endorsement of the 6’ 10” sophomore’s first year at CFS. “The people here have so much love for each other,” he says. Besides the bonds among students, John talks about the incredible relationship he has formed with basketball coach Marc Turner as a power forward on the Varsity basketball team. “What he cares about is academics first. He always reminds me to follow my dreams and remember why I am here.” John grew up in South Sudan during its civil war and is a member of the Dinka tribe. At one month old, he, his older brother, his mother and his sister left his father—a soldier— behind for a refugee camp in Kenya. “It was hard there. There were no good schools. There was not enough food. But we shared.” Because John was good in school, he got his first boarding school scholarship in 4th grade. As an 8th grader, John was eligible to apply for school in America. His parents felt that CFS was a good fit for his academic and athletic abilities, and their Christian background. “The schedule here is fair, and I can concentrate much more.” ZHAOSEN GUO ’17, BEIJING, CHINA Senior Zhaosen Guo, from Beijing, China, learned about Church Farm School from John Zhang ’15. “John told me how great the student relationships are, and what a strong community it was.” Zhaosen’s mother came for a tour, and really liked the students’ appearance and that it was a single gender

school. Zhaosen stepped onto campus in September 2014 as a sophomore. “I was nervous, but I’m outgoing. I hop in quickly.” He immediately became a tour guide for the Admission department. Zhaosen says during tours, visitors are “most impressed by the abundance of land at CFS—what we had and what we sold off to create the endowment and make the school affordable.” He also cites his own cottage, Catherwood, as a point of appeal. “Parents like to see the effort the cottage faculty put in to make our cottages feel like home.” Zhaosen is also on the Varsity Tennis Team, a member of the Honor Council, the CFS Choir, a DECA officer and was inducted into the National Honor Society last year. He has received awards for his prowess in math and French, as well as ambassadorship and service. “John was right about this place. The relationships among students are incredible, but so are the relationships with adults. They really help you along the way when you need it.” JAMAAL AW YOONIS ’16, SOMALILAND, AFRICA Born in a small city in Ethiopia, Jamaal Aw Yoonis’ family fled when civil war broke out in 1984. Since that time, they have lived as nomads, tending animals on the fringes of cities throughout northern Africa. At the age of five, Jamaal left his family and moved under the care of his cousin in Somaliland to begin his education. In middle school, Jamaal was selected as one of just 45 students to attend the prestigious Abaarso School. He rose to 6th best student in the school, granting him a scholarship to attend private school in the U.S. He chose Church Farm School based on its diversity. At first, living outside of Philadelphia was a challenge, Jamaal says—the different food, people, culture and especially the weather. “The first time it snowed, it was hard to go outside. I couldn’t get warm even with many layers. I got sick a lot.” By the second year, Jamaal really loved it here. “It’s a small school, but a big space for us.” His favorite experiences at CFS were running track and talking to his friends in the cottage about their unique ideas and culture. He is currently attending Berea College, where he hopes to pursue STEM studies.

Rick Weber: Leading by Example

RICK WEBER

CFS Leadership Council The Church Farm School Leadership Council is established to provide guidance and feedback to Church Farm School administration and its Board of Directors, and works diligently to promote the mission and interests of the school and generate financial support for the school. IF HE WASN’T THE MANAGING DIRECTOR OF DNB FIRST WEALTH Management, Rick Weber says he would have loved to become a history professor. As fate would have it, he met the love of his life (he just celebrated 44 years of marriage with wife, Chris) in Connecticut, and his future father-in-law encouraged him to try his hand at banking near their new home in Reading, PA, in 1973. While Weber’s career path may have changed, his passion for education certainly hasn’t waned. Luckily, he works at a community bank that, according to Weber, truly believes in investing in its community. “I love the culture at DNB First. We don’t just donate money; we commit our people and their time. When you help to grow the quality of life in your community, everyone wins.” Church Farm School has been a fortunate beneficiary of DNB First’s philanthropy for many years, through donations to the school as part of the EITC (Educational Improvement Tax Credit) program and participation in the Griffin Scholars Program (any individual or organization that donates at least $6,000 to the school is partnered with a student through this program). Personally, Weber and his wife have supported the school through sponsorship of the school’s annual Gala. Most recently, Weber was selected as Chair of the Church Farm School Leadership Council. Weber first learned about Church Farm School when he started at DNB First Wealth Management in Exton six years ago. Bill Latoff, DNB First former Chairman and CEO, and Bill Hieb, DNB First current CEO and President, suggested he personally present the school with its EITC check. The EITC Program enables any firm that pays Pennsylvania state taxes to convert these dollars into scholarships. “I started attending more and more events, learning about the school, the administration and the wonderful faculty and students; it all snowballed into my getting more involved and advocating for the school,” Weber says. As the Chair of the Leadership Council, a recently formed group of retired and active professionals who provide guidance to the school on how to best grow its presence and fundraising, Weber is eager to jump in. “I’ve been on many boards throughout my career, and I’ve never been one to sit quietly in the back of the room,” he says. Weber’s initial goal is to grow the Council by another 10 or 15 people who can help bolster the EITC and other programs for Church Farm School. “This school is changing lives. By participating in the EITC and Griffin Scholars programs, attending the Gala and the Golf Classic and being part of the Leadership Council, you really feel connected to these boys’ success stories.”

A Tribute to Newton Disney ’48

DURING ALUMNI WEEKEND, JAMES TATE ‘52 (CENTER) RECEIVED THE INAUGURAL NEWTON DISNEY SERVICE AWARD FROM NEWT’S SON CHARLES AND WIFE JODY.

WHEN I HEARD ABOUT A NEW AWARD NAMED FOR Newton R. Disney ’48, I was elated. I cannot think of a more deserving person. When Newt was at Church Farm School, he was a standout no matter the endeavor: academics, sports, work or campus life. Able to make any student comfortable, he also convinced us that “’tis better to be happy than glum.” One could not help to want to grow up to be like Newt. Newt’s interest in serving the school resulted in his coaching the bedraggled CFS basketball program in the late ’50s. His success is the stuff of worship by those who were coached by Newt to two KSAC league championships. Appropriately, when the Hall of Athletic Honor was established in 2006, the vote by the Alumni Executive Committee was unanimous that he be an inaugural inductee. As President of the school’s alumni society in the 1960s, Newt methodically worked to help alums maintain their relationship with the school. At home, he realized his goal of becoming a certified nurse anesthetist and hospital manager. He also began participating in the Philadelphia Mummer’s Parade. For “pin money,” he performed as a magician. As the saying goes, “He didn’t let any grass grow under his feet.” A move to the West Coast in the early 1970s ended his regular, physical connection with the school. Nevertheless, he made liberal use of the telephone, letters, joint vacations and visits back East to remain connected. In 1998, he organized a 50th reunion of his class, and extended the invitation to alumni from 1946 through 1952. It was a phenomenal success. Some had not been on campus for decades. Listening to each man’s story about how being a Church Farm student prepared them for adulthood was extra special.

nothing “There’s better than … to

give an award at my dad’s favorite place, to one of my dad’s favorite people.” – CHARLES DISNEY

Newt was a one-of-a-kind alumnus who not only looked back, came back and gave back to our school, but who wove a connection through his fellow alums and his interest in the wellbeing of the school. He loved Church Farm; it was a special component of his life for 60+ years. The Alumni Executive Committee under Don Burt’s leadership created the Newton Disney Service Award for someone who serves the school in a significant and committed manner. Naming it to honor Newt is an excellent choice. I extend my gratitude to the Association for selecting me to receive the first award, as well as to Jody, Newt’s wife, and Charles, his son, for traveling a great distance to attend this special occasion. My goal is to live up to the legacy left by Newt by serving the school with the same enthusiasm and commitment. – James Tate ’52 NEWTON DISNEY ’48

Class of 2016: A Firm Foundation “IT’S NEVER AN EASY TASK TO LEAVE BEHIND THE THINGS we’ve grown accustomed to. I’m sure high school graduation is a painful transition for anybody, at least for those of us who enjoyed our experience. But if I haven’t made myself clear already, the Class of 2016 is leaving more than just a high school: we’re leaving our home.

love, because here there is more to be found than just classrooms and buildings, but memories and people that have been pivotal in changing us from the boys we were when we arrived into the men that we are now.”

So as we depart today, I would ask my brothers in the Class of 2016 not to take a moment for granted, whether it be one of the few that we have left together here at CFS or the countless more that we’ll encounter elsewhere in the future; and I pray that wherever we find ourselves after CFS, we might be blessed enough to call that community our home and its constituents our family. Although some might expect me to make the oft-repeated remark that, as a senior who has endured four years under the oppressive regime of an all-boys boarding school, I’m all but flying off of campus faster than my mother’s car can pull out of the driveway—but I can’t because it’s not true. For all the excitement that college has to offer, I can’t get any of this out there, and I can’t see all of you every day out there or have endless conversations with Branden or take a half-minute walk to any of my friends’ houses with Zeeshan, and no matter when it is that I choose to come back and visit, it won’t be quite the same home that I left without each and every one of you to revel in it with me. Church Farm School has taught me that any given moment with your brothers can become a memory that lasts a lifetime. Don’t let those moments pass you by. They’re irreplaceable.” – Remarks excerpted from the Class of 2016 Commencement address by Jeremy Shields of Philadelphia, PA. Jeremy is currently attending Williams College on a full scholarship.

Nighttime in the Garden: Church Farm School Gala Nets New Friends in a New Venue MORE THAN 200 LONGTIME FRIENDS OF CHURCH FARM SCHOOL, and many newer to our mission, spent a beautiful evening at Longwood Gardens on May 13 for the school’s Third Annual Gala. “Nighttime in the Garden” raised more than $210,000 through sponsorships, donations and the live auction, which included much-desired (and hard to come by) tickets to “Hamilton,” a carriage ride through Chester County and a private performance by the Church Farm School Choir, among others.

Morris Kellett Receives 2016 J. Tyler Griffin Award for Ambassadorship We were thrilled to honor former Church Farm School board member Morris Kellett with our 2016 J. Tyler Griffin Award for Ambassadorship in May. Born in Bryn Mawr, PA, Kellett attended Princeton University and the University of Pennsylvania before becoming an associate and then partner at the Philadelphia law firm Dechert, Price and Rhoads. He also served as a captain in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1957–60. Kellett served on the Church Farm School Board for more than 20 years, as both the Board Secretary and a member of the Executive Committee. Sam Ballam, who served with him and presented Kellett with the award, said “Morris clearly understood the CFS mission. He never dominated a discussion, but when he spoke, all board members listened and rightly respected his opinion. If there was a Mount Rushmore of CFS board members, then Morris would be on it, along with [former board member] Tyler Griffin.” Since retirement, Kellett has been volunteering as an English as a Second Language (ESL) tutor.

Left to right: Board President Mark Carroll, Morris Kellett, Sam Ballam and Head of School Ned Sherrill.

Sally Graham: Stalwart CFS Advocate SALLY GRAHAM

AS SOON AS YOU BECOME PART OF THE CHURCH FARM SCHOOL community, it won’t be long until you begin to notice a sweet, short-haired woman with a kind smile on campus. Sally Niness Graham says she hasn’t missed a single “Why the Chimes Rang” Christmas Pageant performance since the late 1970s, and laments that she recently had to skip her first Commencement due to her husband, George, being ill. No one would ever hold it against her. Since becoming involved with Church Farm School nearly four decades ago, she has become an omnipresent part of the CFS story: serving on the school’s Board of Managers, being elected one of the first female trustees on the Board of Directors, chairing the Board Development Committee, helping kickstart the Annual Fund, Golf Classic and Gala and generally being one of the most stalwart advocates for the school one could ever hope for. In fact, Graham loves Church Farm School so much that she jokes that she and her husband contemplated divorcing just so that their son, George “Chip” Graham could attend. “We didn’t fit the mission, but we thought the world of the school.” The Grahams sent their son elsewhere instead, and Church Farm School has since opened up its doors to a wider variety of students. Graham joined the school’s Board of Managers in the late 1970s after being introduced to the school by her friend and fellow Garden Club compatriot, Louise Mullestein. In fact, Graham remembers, Louise’s husband William “Whitey” Mullestein used to meet Graham’s father, Sam Niness, as well as the Colonel (CFS’ founder and first headmaster), every week at the Guernsey Cow in Exton. The Board of Managers was a group of 50 women recruited to advocate in the community on behalf of Church Farm School. Graham says they always ensured fresh flowers were in Chapel, hosted the Commencement reception in the rose garden and generally supported the boys. “If a student was having a hard time, we’d stop by or give them a call, or we’d go cheer them on at their games.” The Board of Managers elected her President in 1988, where she served on the CFS Strategic Planning Committee to chart the future of the school. Her talent and willingness to roll up her sleeves quickly became apparent, and then Board President Tyler Griffin persuaded her to serve on the Board of Directors. Graham and fellow trustee Cannie Shafer will go down in history as CFS’s first two female board members.

believe in the “Imission, and I just

love the boys. You walk on campus and you are always greeted with a smile and a handshake. There is such warmth at Church Farm School.” – SALLY GRAHAM

In 2005, CFS honored Graham with the prestigious J. Tyler Griffin Award for Excellence in Ambassadorship. Though she has since retired from the Board, Graham remains active in school life. Her favorite experience is serving as a Griffin Scholar sponsor, where her financial support is allocated to a specific student with whom she gets to interact during biannual luncheons at the school. “I believe in the mission, and I just love the boys. You walk on campus and you are always greeted with a smile and a handshake. There is such warmth at Church Farm School.”

Shreiner Society Profile: Samuel D. Hanger “I GUESS YOU COULD SAY SINGING AND WORKING WITH KIDS IS the story of my life,” says Samuel D. Hanger, sitting in his favorite chair in his Ocean City, NJ, home. The purchase of the family’s summer cottage in Ocean City was just one of the many forward-thinking decisions Hanger made during his life, which began in 1928 in Haddonfield, NJ. There, his close-knit family were enthusiastic attendees of Grace Episcopal Church, where Hanger “as a balking teenager” reluctantly joined the choir. Despite his initial misgivings, he ended up loving singing, especially with the accompaniment of a player piano. He continues to sing every Sunday at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Ocean City. It was in Grace Church’s library that Hanger first learned about Church Farm School, picking up a brochure and thinking its mission seemed worthy. “I knew immediately it was the kind of place I wanted to support,” he recalls. Even though he was only 19 at the time, he slipped a donation in the mail. His generosity to the school has not wavered in 70 years, even making plans for Church Farm School in his will. What’s most interesting about Hanger’s passion for the school is that he has never stepped foot on its Exton, PA, campus. Nonetheless, he is well aware of the joys (and sometimes difficulties) of working with teenagers, both as a public school math and science teacher and a longtime Scout Master for the Boy Scouts of America.

SAMUEL D. HANGER

I can’t really explain after all these “years why that Church Farm School

brochure appealed to me. I just felt it deep in my heart.”

“As a young man, I drifted around for a while, not knowing what I wanted to do,” Hanger says. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War in the early 1950s. When he returned to Haddonfield, a friend was taking teaching certification courses at Glassboro State College and he was inspired to do the same. After receiving his grade 5-9 credentials, he did his practice teaching at Haddon Heights Junior School. He made a great impression, and was hired as a full-time 8th grade math and science teacher. He taught at the school for 25 years, until retiring in June 1984. “I retired for two reasons,” he says. “My eyes were starting to give me trouble, and the kids were starting to give me trouble.”

25

He says one of the aspects of Church Farm School that has impressed him the most is the boys’ dress: “They always seem to have the appropriate clothes for each activity. They are expected to look and act like gentlemen.” During his teaching years, Hanger purchased a five-acre plot of land in New Lisbon, NJ. When his parents passed away in 1972, he transitioned to his home in the woods along the Rancocas Creek. His eyesight started to fail in the 1990s, and following a successful double corneal transplant, he moved into his home in Ocean City, which he winterized. Though he hasn’t driven in nine years, he has family and friends always eager to help him get around. His nieces drop by weekly to take him grocery shopping, and a kind neighbor brings him to church to sing in the choir every Sunday. “I’ve never felt a lack of things to do,” he says.

Support Church Farm School Today development@gocfs.net 610.363.5333 gocfs.net/give

Hanger is enthusiastic about Church Farm School’s “momentous decision” to build its endowment and to transition from animal husbandry teachings to a college preparatory school. “From what I read, every student is being placed in college; many in some of the finest schools. I’ve never once felt my money was wasted. I can’t really explain after all these years why that Church Farm School brochure appealed to me. I just felt it deep in my heart.”
