Letter from the Head of School Dear Class of 2020, Transitions pays tribute to a good number of things that occur in the course of a school year from September to June, but none more important than the achievements you, the Class of 2020, have earned and the contributions in leadership and service you have made to Church Farm School. You have successfully transitioned along a steady, progressive movement from underclassmen into responsible, reliable and purposeful young men with the whole world opening before you, awaiting your talented contributions that will enrich all of our lives in addition to your own. This is something to celebrate; Congratulations! Your Class year, when rendered slightly differently as 20/20, represents a clarity of vision that is the standard by which all else is measured and to which all corrective measures are pointed. We trust that during your time at CFS you have gained at least some degree of clarity about life and a greater sense of your still-to-be-determined place in it. Any personal vision you have for yourselves will propel you forward while guiding and fueling the adventure upon which all successful people continue to grow and flourish. You must also take to heart that a parallel inner transformation has blossomed within you whereby your emotional strength and spiritual bearings have given rise to that character you will take with you from CFS. Stay mindful of these things, trust them, and thereby you will surely continue that transformation which is the flowering of your own self. The campus enhancement project, its renovation of existing spaces and new construction, the continuing transformation of a school campus and its service to a new generation of learners, will always be part of your senior year. So, too, will be a construction of that brotherhood you will always share with one another and take with you. In truth and as you have learned here, God0s children are forever under construction and continued transformative growth will always be possible when we are open to this condition. Remember to look back, come back and give back. We look forward to learning more about your continuing adventure and unfolding transformation. Godspeed, Rev. Sherrill

Transitions are an inevitable part of life, and as we have seen this year it is not only people who experience these changes. Transitions often mark the end of one thing and the beginning of something new, a new part of our life. As our school building goes through its own transition our seniors are preparing for the transition to college and exciting possibilities this next step brings. It is important to remember and be able to reflect on the past as we move on to the future. Our hope is that this yearbook will allow you to revisit your time here at CFS as you move on to new opportunities.

CFS HIGHLIGHTS

Yewei Wang 020

6

Yiwei is a truly selfless individual. To those who know him personally, he stands out for his well-meaning character and kind disposition. He is highly respected among the greater community here at Church Farm School, and exemplifies selflessness. When asked about the type of community he seeks, Yiwei responded candidly that he would love to live in a community where people are not afraid to stand up for themselves and where there is always someone willing to help when needed. He does not enjoy the competitive nature of CFS because this pulls people apart. Although competition can be healthy, Yiwei believes that it breeds more jealousy, stress, and anxiety, and continues inequality within a community. Although CFS doesn0t necessarily reflect Yiwei0s ideal community, he has found positive aspects of which he is very proud. He appreciates that CFS offered him the chance to find the courage to speak up for himself and others. Yiwei compares the relationships between teachers and students in China to that of policemen and criminals, and says he was never courageous enough to stand up for his own thoughts and ideas in school there. He found the complete opposite to be true at CFS. Here he has been encouraged to speak up and care for those in this community, instead of only competing. Yiwei has come to see how much he owes to those around him. His parents had to fight for the same educational opportunities they have been able to give to him. Their hard work allowed them to move to Shanghai to work for international companies, which led to Yiwei0s chance to study abroad and expand his learning. He truly appreciates his parent0s sacrifice to do what was best for him. Understanding what others have sacrificed has shown Yiwei the importance of empathy, and how understanding the hardships of others is vital to acting selflessly. Yiwei sees selflessness as the willingness to sacrifice one0s own benefit to help others. If people are unable to sense the struggles of others, it is impossible to know when someone needs help. Ultimately, Yiwei sees any sacrifices he may have to make to help others as a small step to improving equality, which he sees as a social responsibility. One of the best pieces of advice he ever received is a Chinese saying that states, 1only when a nation respects the development of different ideologies can a nation generate great ideologies.2 Even though he recognizes that his country does not currently live up to this ideal, he believes it is key to positive growth. Believing that there is just one correct answer and only reaching for high scores does not create community. Yiwei strives to learn all he can, and hopes to use this knowledge to improve the Chinese educational system, helping China become more student-centered and to help educators see the importance of critical thinking and independent thought. Yiwei believes that a little hope can help motivate people to look forward to the future. Without hope, they will lose their will to grow and improve. 1Every time I hear the word 3hope,0 I think of the desire to improve oneself and the world at large.2

Mrs. Stefanie Claypoole

SELFLESS & GIVING

As the first marketing manager in Church Farm School0s history, Ms. Claypoole has been devoting herself to the positive promotion of our school for six years. By continuously improving and updating the school website, creating new social media accounts, and posting pictures that show the achievements of our students and faculty, Ms. Claypoole has successfully bolstered the visibility of the school to the outside and helped to attract applicants to this close-knit CFS community. 1Selflessness is initially written in our DNA. What people need to do is to explore this innate quality as they experience more,2 Ms. Claypoole stated confidently. When asked to define 1selflessness,2 Ms. Claypoole did not hesitate to state that everyone more or less possesses the quality to be selfless. As they grow up, people unearth this virtue in themselves. For example, Ms. Claypoole0s father used to think that it was not worth one0s time and effort to help others. He always assumed that Ms. Claypoole was too selfless and empathetic and that others took advantage of her. However, at her wedding, seeing the love and support between his daughter and her new husband, he realized that sometimes being selfless can actually benefit both the giver and the receiver, as shown by this couple and the love they shared. 1Most students are surprised when I call their names, but it0s my responsibility as a CFS faculty member to recognize everyone even though I do not teach any class.2 Ms. Claypoole has never thought that selflessness should be expressed outwardly. Rather, it0s a virtue that needs to be preserved silently. Although she doesn0t have as many opportunities as teachers to communicate with students, Ms. Claypoole has made it her job to see and know everyone in the CFS community. Choir performances, athletic competitions, and award nights are all places that one can find her seeking the best filming angle and recording unforgettable moments. Ms. Claypoole has even become a mentor to some students. When she sees a student struggling, she does her best to support them, even if their struggle has been caused by their own poor choices. Even though she understands that she cannot control all outcomes, she remains a steadfast proponent of the belief that nothing should deter people from reaching out to offer help. 1No matter how bad a person has been, we should not give up on anyone.2 1If both sides can be just a little bit more selfless, I believe that the communication and collaboration between the students and the administrators at CFS will be boosted significantly,'' declared Ms. Claypoole unswervingly. Working at CFS for six years, Ms. Claypoole has observed adult and student groups become stronger independent of one another. Her hope is that with a little more effort, communication, and understanding CFS will grow stronger as a united community.

CFS HIGHLIGHTS

Ms. Krista Peterson

8

Ms. Peterson has been the backbone of the CFS community for many years, and while much of her work goes unnoticed, she continues to be a support for both students and adults. She works with adults to organize classes and help with planning and grading, and works with students to schedule their classes, in addition to creating the course schedule each year. When asked if she considers herself helpful, Ms. Peterson stated that being helpful is something she prides herself on and that she genuinely enjoys. Her family had a lot to do with this, as she learned the importance of empathy and offering help to others when you are able. Still, some may wonder what continues to drive this helpful nature. Ms. Peterson explained that she wants to show how thankful she is for all she has, and that she hopes giving her time to others shows her gratitude. She admits that she struggles to understand people who feel the world owes them something, and are unwilling to help others. When asked how she sees her impact on the CFS community, Ms. Peterson said that she saw a need for structure and someone to help hold things together. She believes that her part in this community is important and that what she does is worthwhile, because she is able to mentor and support both adults and students. Ms. Peterson went on to explain what she has gained from CFS. She mentioned that her background in business has helped her trust her own instincts, and over the years she has become more confident in her own opinions and perspectives. She said that she does feel appreciated, and ultimately she enjoys her job because she is able to continue to be helpful to those around her. Ultimately, Ms. Peterson hopes that the help she gives allows others to feel more confident in what they do and to grow. Ms. Peterson gave a few final pieces of advice to the CFS community: 1when times get tough, remember that you have made it through tough times before, and while things aren0t always easy, getting through these times is what makes us better people.2

Dawit Kahesay 220

a healthy balance between school life and social life and walked him through the confusion. Growing up he was taught to be, 1hospitable to everyone even though [he] might not get along with them.2 Although he has helped so many others, he never expected any gratitude. He continues to believe that there is never a downside to helping others. Sometimes he fears that his help might not be enough, and has even regretted that he could have been more generous. 1If I was capable of offering help, why should I refuse to do it?2 When asked to give some advice to the CFS community, Dawit stressed the importance of respecting each student0s individuality. Never judge anyone based on the community that he comes from. Dawit believes that a person should never be judged by where they come from. Instead, we should judge a person on their actions. Showing respect for each individual is the most valuable form of being helpful.

HELPFUL & GOOD 0BROTHER1

Dawit was not very aware of issues outside of his community until he obtained his first cellphone at the age of twelve. While he could now witness the beauty of the world through the internet, he also gained access to the suffering of people across the globe. These sorrows and conflicts did not deter him from stepping out of his comfort zone. Rather, Dawit was empathetic to the misery he observed and generated a firm determination to help others as much as he could. He explained that, at CFS, Ms. Campbell sparked his enthusiasm for helping others. During his junior year, Dawit became overwhelmed by the large amount of schoolwork and the strenuous preparations for the SAT. Ms. Campbell noticed this struggle and helped him to organize and manage his schedule, but more, she made sure to continue to check on him and ensure his stress was not becoming too much. This organization not only helped Dawit through his most crucial year, but it also strengthened Dawit0s conviction to devoting time to help others. 1I0m still approaching that quality,2 Dawit said when asked if he considered himself helpful. He was too modest to acknowledge his readiness to help others. Studying at CFS exposed Dawit to a variety of cultures, caused him to become more outgoing and confident, and offered him opportunities to take up the role of leader. Having been a prefect in Good Shepherd cottage and Pew cottage, Dawit really appreciated the time spent hanging out with his friends, especially the moments when they were able to help each other. As Dawit recalled, there was a time when one of his friends was overtaken by the stress of school life. Sports practice, homework, extracurricular activities, and various clubs pushed the student to the edge. Having been through the same struggle, Dawit didn0t hesitate to give his friend a hand. He got in touch with the student0s family and learned more about the struggles he was dealing with. Further understanding his friend0s struggle, Dawit took the time and invited his friend to walk to the park behind the school. Escaping the school environment and taking the time to slow down in the quiet of nature helped this student to destress and enjoy a transient moment of tranquility. Dawit worked with him to find

Rafael Tinio 021

10

Having not been an academic student back in middle school, Raphael Tinio always struggled with living up to the expectations of others. Even carrying the burden of high expectations, Raphael never feared challenges or failures and even appreciated those frustrations, which helped him to realize his weaknesses and motivated him to keep pursuing the best version of himself. During Junior year, Raphael encountered one of the biggest obstacles at CFS, AP Calculus AB. The convoluted limits and continuity, the incomprehensible derivatives and rates of change, and the intricate integrals and areas had become the nightmare of thousands of students. Admittedly, as a student who never performed poorly in any other classes at CFS, Mr. Labrador0s class was a shock that left Raphael crestfallen. Nevertheless, Raphael0s strong mindset kept him positive even when things went downhill. While good grades could significantly boost his confidence, poor ones prompted him to reflect on his weaknesses. Regardless of the unexpected difficulty, Raphael began to look for solutions to overcome the obstacles that stood in his way, such as seeking help from students who had already taken the class and devoting more time and effort to practicing. Raphael is not only demanding of himself, he also strives to support peers and expects the same effort from those around him. Typically, Raphael prefers to play the role of a team coordinator. Organizing team meetings to brainstorm a collective team goal, putting forth possible initiatives, and driving the team dynamics are all tasks that Raphael strives to accomplish. For example, when doing the French Video Project, Raphael is always proactive and leads other team members to analyze the instructions and come up with several plausible ideas. He takes charge of subdividing the whole project into different parts and distributes the workload to each team member. Raphael also strives to be aware of others when working in a group and ensuring that no one feels undue stress or anxiety. He is willing to work with other team members, help them solve any issues, and resolve any confusion within his capability. On top of high expectations, Raphael values honesty as one of the most important qualities that one can possess. Most often, people choose to hide truths because they want to impress others and paint a perfect image. However, Raphael believes that it0s more important to be oneself. He is direct to everyone and always has the courage to express the most authentic feelings. During freshman year, Raphael tried out for the CFS wrestling team, out of curiosity. Surprisingly, it turned out that he was an excellent wrestler. Even though Raphael became a strong wrestler he did not personally enjoy the sport, but he persevered because he did not want to disappoint his team. He talked about his dilemma with Mr. Smith and Mr. Thompson. Contrary to the expectation that he would not be able to switch teams, both coaches comforted him, indicated that they totally understood his trouble, and approved the request. Raphael attributed this efficient communication to the quality of being honest and direct. He personally concluded that he strived to be honest and direct to everyone else, which was how he would like to be treated.

Ms. Kristen Boone

TRUTHFUL & HIGH EXPECTATIONS

Ms. Boone is known as one of the 1hard2 teachers at CFS, and going in you know it0s not going to be easy. However, once you get into her class, you realize that 1hard2 is really just her high expectations. When asked who taught her the value of integrity, Ms. Boone readily replied that it was her mother, who taught her that it is important to be honest with both yourself and others. 1If we allow 3bad0 things to continue, we are ultimately responsible if someone gets hurt.2 She clarified that if we have the power to stop something that could hurt others she believes that we have the responsibility to try. When asked what she thinks of ambition, Ms. Boone stated 1If I had to choose between being ambitious or doing what0s right, I would always do what is right. Being truthful is not about getting somewhere, or hurting others in the pursuit of ambition, but it is about helping people look at things in a new way, even if they don0t want to hear it, or it hurts them now, I truly believe it will help in the long run.2 She went on to say that she understands the importance of ambition, but not at the disadvantage of someone else. She strongly believes that you should expect the best from everyone, including yourself, whatever that 1best2 may be. When Ms. Boone is asked how she sees her role when working on a team, she said it depends who0s on it. 1If I think I would make the best leader, I will gladly fill that role; but in all honesty I would always rather be in a creative position. I enjoy challenging myself and trying new things.2 She pointed out the best kind of leader isn0t always in charge, but they are looking out for others. Ms. Boone used the very common CFS example of 1helping your brother2 by giving him answers or doing work for him. She pointed out that while you may be helping your friend at that moment, if they don0t put in the effort that is needed, and continue to avoid challenges, they are going to struggle in the long run. Ms. Boone continued explaining how she dealt with hard classes and difficulties when she was a student. Whenever she came up against something challenging or that seemed beyond her ability, she still did everything she could to do her best. 1I used those instances to show those that did not believe in me that they were wrong; it didn0t matter if the outcome wasn0t perfect, it was my best.2 Ms. Boone learned early on that we are often our own worst enemy. We think we are in a competition, but we create that idea ourselves. Instead of comparing what you are doing with others, compare it to what you have done in the past. 1If you can improve the next time, that is all that matters. Even the 3smartest0 student is not perfect. We stress ourselves out because we think we need to be perfect, even when no one actually expects it of us. It is so important to set realistic goals for yourself. Imagine if you tried your hardest when studying for that chemistry test and instead of expecting a 100% you aimed for a 70%, maybe even a 65%. How would you feel if you ended up with a 75% or even an 85%? We sometimes set unrealistic expectations, and overestimate 3our best0 and we become stressed and unhappy when we don0t meet them. If you try your hardest and continue to challenge yourself, then what you accomplish is always excellent.2

You both are the backbone of CFS and I don2t know what they would do without your prowess and wisdom. You are both great listeners, who have been able to provide me and others with comfort when there wasn2t any. To my youngins Dylan, Andre, Brandon, Tyler, and Caleb, you all have the potential to be truly successful, and I can2t wait to witness it. President0s Message to the School

Dear Family, I know I would not be the student I am today if it weren't for the connections I have established in my five years at Church Farm School. I am no longer the 14-year-old boy who walked onto this campus with little sense of how the world worked. I have learned so much beyond academics during my time at CFS and the creation of the man I am today speaks to that. My young mindset was forced to mature, because I never knew true friendship until I came here, I never understood brotherhood until I came here, and I never experienced loss until I came here. I gained real strength at CFS and I learned to persevere through hardships that many outside this community would not understand. I cannot say that I am sad to leave Church Farm. I can2t wait to move on and start the next chapter of my life. I am looking forward to entering a new community with fresh faces and new experiences, but the old ones will be missed. To those who have had a positive impact on me and have helped me become who I am today, thank you. I know I will not be able to replicate the strong bonds that I have created here, but I hope to form successful new ones in the future. To my brothers in the class of 2020, regardless of what anybody says, we were the heart, mind, and soul of this school. We were once misunderstood and thought to be a mischievous class, but we still thrived and made it to graduation. We had some bumps along the way, but as Josh Brooks once said 0It's not always about how you start...It2s about how you finish.1 To all our fallen soldiers we lost along the way, we are proud of you. What happened to some of you may have been unfortunate, but as they say, everything happens for a reason. I see many of you taking future opportunities and turning them into successful ones. Zay, Mal, and Coop, I wish you guys the best in your athletic careers, and remember us when you all go pro. Xila keep being a monster in the studio, Quan and Xavier you2re both always going to be the lil bros, and Jojo never give up. I2ve got nothing but love for all of you. To all the 0youngins1, learn to play the game of life. As you grow and mature into your own man there will be times where you are going to experience controversy and adversity. In some situations you may even find yourself having to decide what you stand for in life. In those moments never allow anyone to silence you. Martin Luther King, Jr. once said, 0 The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy,1 and I believe that those are words to live by. Stay woke and have each other's back...best of luck. To the Faculty, thank you to all the adults of CFS that have taken time over the past five years to make an otherworldly contribution to my experience here. Some of you do so much for this community and much of it goes unrecognized. I want to tell you that the value of your work is cherished. While you may currently be at CFS, you are not limited by this, and I encourage you all to one day explore the impact you might have on the rest of the world. You all have surmounted your roles as faculty and, for that, I am truly thankful. Godspeed, LaMarre Kemp Jean

Class of 2020 62

To the Class of 2020, Our time together is rapidly coming to an end. It seems like just yesterday you all came in as 7th, 8th, or 9th graders and have grown into young men overnight. Throughout your time at CFS, we have experienced highs and lows, tears and laughter, successes and heartbreaks together. You have all taught me more than you will ever know, and I appreciate you greatly for that. As you prepare to go out into the world and leave CFS in your rearview, I want you to know that I will always be behind you to cheer you on. Life can be beautiful, but it can also be tough. Researcher BrenĂŠ Brown reminds us that 0sometimes the bravest and most important thing you can do is just show up1. Show up for yourself. Show up for the people who have helped you get to where you are today. Show up for your haters. Rise above. Never sell yourself short. Be the best version of yourself each and everyday. Some days it will be hard and it will feel impossible to push forward. Kobe Bryant told us that 0the moment you give up is the moment you let someone else win.1 Be the winner of your own life. I am so honored that I was able to spend so much time with the Class of 2020. Your class is unique and special, and will always hold a very special place in my heart. To say you will be missed doesn2t even begin to express how I am feeling, but I am so excited to see you all flourish and excel as you continue on your journey. I firmly believe that each and every one of you has the potential to change the world. Show them what you are made of! #2020CLEARVISION #MAMBAMENTALITY

With all of my love, Ms. Campbell

I would like to thank my parents for always supporting me. I would also like to thank the senior class for helping me through the struggles of high school and I lastly want to thank the teachers that believed in me.

I have definitely both physically matured into a young man and mentally matured my mind to be ready to start college. I also have gotten more involved in the Church Farm School community by joining clubs, being a student representative, and getting a job working in the dining hall.

Next year I am excited to be living a little bit closer to home. I am excited to start being a young adult and having even more independence compared to when I was in High School. I am also ready to meet new people and try new things. Lastly, I will be most excited when I come back to visit Church Farm School. 64

I would like to give thanks to all my slimes out there. Y'all already know who you guys are. I would like to also thank my family and some of the teachers who actually helped me grow into a better person while I was here. I will certainly miss some of yall and I wish all my younger slimes the best.

I have definitely grown to be way more independent than I used to be. I used to depend a lot on my family for all sorts of little things but now all those things I do by myself and then some.

Next year, I'm most excited for going to college, and working.

Thanks to Ms. Boone and everyone who picked me up in my darkest moments.

During my time at CFS, I have grown most in my mindset as I have studied the works of several philosophers and refined my way of thinking. My favorite philosophers are Alan Watts, Carl Jung, and Lao Tzu.

I can't really say what I am most excited about for next year... maybe the independence that comes with leaving high school. Or maybe the uncertainty that's to come. To quote Paul T.P. Wong, "A person's true character is often revealed in time of crisis or temptation. Make sure that you have what it takes to be your best in such times."

66

"Sometimes, it0s not the people who change, it0s the mask that falls off." -Haruki Murakami

Next year, I am most excited to finally be able to explore what I want to do with my life.

I would like to thank my Parents, Ms. Boone, Mr. Warfel, Mr. Gress. I've doubted myself numerous times and made more mistakes than I can count. I wouldn't have made it without the support of the people who believe in me and see more in me than I do myself. To them I say thank you, and I couldn't have done it without you. Shout out to Dion and DrÀgÒn, gonna miss y0all!

I have grown most at CFS as I used to not care about the things I would say to other people and intentionally, or unintentionally, hurt people's feelings. I was also very immature and it was hard for people to take me seriously.

I would like to give thanks to my advisor, Mrs. Barr, for being a great advisor and teacher as well as all my buds at Church Farm School who helped me out when I was stressed. I'd especially like to give thanks to my family, who all helped me get through high school and the college process.

I feel like CFS has given me more confidence in myself as a person since it taught me that I can achieve nearly anything through hard work and some effort. It also taught me that I don't need to put on a character in order to adapt to a new social environment.

I'm excited for college since it'll give me a chance to pursue my interests and show me how I can turn my interests into a career.

Special thanks to my advisor, Ms. Scott. I don't think I could have made it without you. Thanks to my bros Quan, Josiah, Jamal, and Xavier. You guys weren't always here but we always checked up on each other. In general, thanks to everyone. CFS means a lot to me.

CFS has helped me mature into a young adult. I am grateful for my time here, getting exposed to new things and meeting people that I see as life long friends.

Next year I am most excited about college. This is something that I have thought about my whole life and now that the time has almost come, I am anxious. CFS has helped me prepare for this moment and I thank everyone who has contributed to my development into a young man. 69

-Richie Jones 2016

In the five years that I have attended Church Farm School, I0ve had the privilege to meet some truly exceptional people. I'd like to start off by giving thanks to the man that has been my advisor throughout my entire CFS career, Mr. Garcia. I cannot thank you enough for being such a huge help to my mother, whenever she had questions or concerns you were there to answer them. You made it a lot easier for her to let her only son leave the house, and I truly thank you fort hat. Thank you for all your help with applications, forms and of course, thank you for the empanadas. I would also like to thank my co-advisor Mr. Dwyer for being such a great human. Thank you for the never ending snarky comments and sarcastic jokes, you don't know how much I appreciate them. Thank you for always being there, every time I needed help with an essay you always found the time. I hope that we can stay in touch and attend a Pearl Jam concert someday. Mr. Fulmer, even though I0ve never taken any of your classes I'm glad that I at least had you as my golf coach. Thank you for being patient with me and my dumb Harry Potter moments. Ms. Campbell, or should I say Dr. Campbell, thank you for being an exceptional band teacher. You have taught me the value that practice does make perfect, you just need effort. Mr. Warfel, I never would have thought that I would be a part of a bowling team but that's how life is. I0m glad you allowed me to be a part of the team, it's been loads of fun learning how to curve a bowling ball.

Before coming to CFS I did not come from the greatest school. It was full of bullying, harassment, and ridicule. Because of that, I didn't feel the need to open up to others, I didn't have anyone before and I didn't need anyone now. But after the first week here that wall that I had built around myself completely crumbled. People were reaching out to me in the middle of the hallway for a handshake or sitting down with me during lunch to ask how I was doing. Little things like this don't seem significant, but they showed me how great the community here was, how strong the brotherhood was. This community has given me the ability to be myself comfortably around others, to break my antisocial shell that I once encased myself in. it has helped me polish my social skills and networking skills, the skills needed to succeed in life. Most importantly, it has taught me that you should always reach out to those that just need some help because sometimes all you need is a little push. I'm glad CFS has given me the opportunity to be a part of this incredible family that is truly like no other.

As I head off to college, I'm afraid to lose the great sense of community here at CFS. The strong brotherhood that is instilled in each and every one of us as soon as we step foot on this campus. But at the same time, I'm grateful to this community for teaching me how to reach out to others and make friends. I hope I can find a diverse group of people like the amazing friends I found here, those who act in the same weird way I do. I also thank CFS for giving a hard and challenging curriculum that will prepare me for the rigors of college, especially the hell that was AP Chem. Dr. Sharma, I say this in the nicest way possible, but thank you for such a challenging and intellectually draining class. Lastly, I look forward to the research projects and countless internship opportunities that are made available at college. I have always enjoyed researching topics around neuroscience and I will most definitely take this passion past my high school career.

Just want to thank all my bruddas who been working with me through this journey. Also want to thank my advisor who kept me focused and who took me in when I didn0t have a home. Wouldn0t be doing what I am without my supportive teachers and bruddas to help me become a better me everyday.

At CFS I0ve grown in many ways but mainly mentally as I0ve gained new perspectives through all the situations I've experienced and people I0ve talked to while here.

Once I graduate I0m most excited to get out in the world and stack my bread so I can eventually give back to the people who gave to me.

Thank you Gress, Fulmer, Kent, Hayes, Dwyer, Sharma, My parents, and friends. I was only fourteen when I got here. That was my first time living without my parents in an unfamiliar place, and this is the farthest distance I,d ever been from my home. With worry and lack of confidence, I took my first step on this campus. At that moment, I realized I can only go back home at most three times a year. Being in this new environment, I had a really hard time because my English was horrible at that time. However, under these circumstances, it was my friends that helped me out. Some of them have graduated already, but no matter where you are, I would like you to know that it is you guys who helped drag me from the darkness. Also, I need to thank my choir teacher, Mr. Gress. I have to admit he is a strange and strict old guard. However, because of his strictness and seriousness in music, I have this great chance to meet and learn from this almost perfect music teacher. He is the one who lighted up my passion for music and guides me all the way through. Mr. Dwyer and Ms. Hayes are two excellent English teachers who showed me the beauty of literature and writing. I have to admit that I had no interest to read books before I met these two teachers. Now, I found the right seasoning of my life plan. And Dr. Sharma is the one who introduced the charm of science to me and always encouraged me to challenge myself in biology. It is really a pity that I cannot attend to your AP chemistry. I will remember your strictness and carry on to my future. I also need to thank two of my advisers, Mr. Kent and Mr. Fulmer, and my parents. You guys always stand on my side, support and encourage me to be the best of myself. There are so many people I want to thank throughout my five years of CFS life. To cut it short, without you guys, there is no way for me to be who I am. 74

I think I have grown most at CFS in my ability in leadership and responsibility. Five years have passed so quickly it seems like the blink of an eye. Thinking about the first day I get to CFS, I feel like it just happened yesterday. I am one of the 0five-year soldiers1 so I was only fourteen when I got here. At that time, I didn2t have any idea about leadership and responsibility. I stuck my nose up at leadership, thinking that it was just something that people always say but never do anything. 0It2s just one of the processes that the school has to make,1 I said disdainfully when I was fourteen and fifteen. I didn2t even have a sense of leadership, let alone responsibility. However, within five years in CFS, I have learned the importance of leadership and responsibility from a lot of lessons. I need to be responsible for myself, then be responsible for my teammates and classmates. With the sense of responsibility is getting higher and higher, leadership appears in my mind and made me become a better student, a better person.

Since I was studying in an all-boys school, the most exciting thing is to get into a school mixed with girls and boys. Just kidding3 I am excited about my future and my experience in college. It is the next level challenge for me. Combined with curiosity and worries, I still want the challenge and to experience more. With the unseeing future, I don2t know what I will end up with, but I am sure for now, I need to be ready to face it.

I would like to thank God first and foremost for giving me the opportunity to be at this school. Next I would like to thank my parents for constantly staying up with me on nights when I had a lot of homework, and also cash apping me lots of money for me to order out whenever I wanted. Next I would like to thank Ms. Campbell who is simply like a mother to me for supporting me and pushing me when no one else did. Another person I would like to thank is Coach Wrice for acting as a father figure on campus but also presenting life-changing opportunities in front of my eyes. Ecstatic once I rose up to the occasion both academically and athletically, but also being understanding when I failed. Lastly I would like to thank my Griffin brothers for staying with me on this long road to graduation, it seems like yesterday we all had assigned seats.

I've definitely grown in height at CFS, but more importantly I definitely matured in character. (I'm a grown man now)

Thank you Mr. Fulmer, Mr. Seeley, Youssouf, Elias, Jaime and everyone else who has stuck by and supported me through my 5 years at CFS.

Thanks to Ms. Campbell, Ms. Boone and Ms. Hayes for making my time here at CFS fantastic. I appreciate the time you have spent with me, both in class and outside of class; you have helped me so much and I can't thank you enough. A special thanks to all my coaches for supporting my athletic career and a thanks Coach Wrice for helping me improve myself in my senior year. Mostly, to everyone I have ever had a conversation with at CFS, thank you for making my time memorable.

I have developed my unique sense of humor here at CFS, I have made strides in my physical body. The thing that is most important is that I have grown both emotionally and matured enough to be able to see the world in a new light and be able to adapt to anywhere I go.

I am most excited to be in an environment that isn't all boys. To expand my horizons and meet new people from all over the world. To see people from my country at the college that I go to. 77

Thanks to Mr. Gress, for helping me find my love for Choral Music and putting up with everything I 'brought to the table'; Mrs. Hayes, for being supportive and being a great mother figure and friend at CFS for the last 4 years; Mr. Warfel for having me in Catherwood (the best cottage) and being a great person that kept my-freshman-self in place; Mr. Fulmer for being an awesome person and the best history teacher I've ever been taught by; Mr. Kent for driving me around the entire mainline area and for taking in my rants and rambles; Mrs. Matteo for being patient with me trying to receive my packages early; Mr. Dwyer for being such an amazing friend and coach; Mrs. Barr for being my mentor in life and a person I can lean on; Mrs. Clark for putting up with all the French classes (esp.French IV); Ms. Young for being my other mother figure and being compassionate; Mrs. V for giving me hope in the midst of trouble; the Health Center (Nurse Seanna, Julien, Rebecca) for being there for my worst and best days; the Development office for being so supportive; Mr. D'Innocenzo; Mr./Mrs. Garcia; Mr. Smith; Mrs. Hughes; Ms. Jordan; Chef Jason, Mrs. Oldt, and the Sodexo Staff; Ms. Saunders; Mrs. Scudder; and everyone else I've forgot to mention. In the past four years, I have experienced a lot with my friends and teachers. I really appreciate everyone who has taught me and guided me toward my dream. Especially thanks to my friend Mrs. Barr who enlightened my dream of being an artist.

Since the first year I came here, I understood the difficulty of getting to know about another culture. I was afraid of being isolated or living in stress every day. However, after my first try out with the wrestling team, I learned this place is not only for building strength in my heart but also for pursuing the common goals with my best friends. There is nothing you can0t deal with if you wrestle.

Next year I am most excited to get out of my comfort zone and meet new friends in college, I0m so excited to embrace the opportunity to interact with the teachers and students around the world. Hopefully, college is not hard so that I can spend more time on my internship~ lol 80

Thanks to Warfel for supporting me, uplifting me, and believing in me when I didn0t even believe in myself. Shout out to the whole Warfel advisory, and thanks to the class of 2020 for seeing something in me and bringing it out. I am what I am because of all of you.

I0ve grown in a lot of ways, Not only in size but attitude. I0ve realized that I have to live my own life and at the end of the day all you can do is do your best. My time here has turned me into the person I look at everyday in the mirror, and for that I am eternally grateful.

After CFS I am most excited about becoming a pilot, and traveling the world.

Thank you, Mom, for dealing with my attitude and constantly putting up with me, for driving me to and from school every day, helping me with homework whenever I needed it, and so much more, you have done it all. I love you. To Ms. Campbell, for adopting me into the greatest advisory group at CFS and always looking out for me in every aspect of life, Thank you, I will never forget you. Huge thank you to Coach Grant and Coach Wrice for shaping me into the man I am today. Finally, Thank you to the Class of 2020, you are all my brothers, we will change the world. Thank you.

At CFS I have harnessed and sharpened all of my positive and enjoyable traits. Whether it be in the classroom, on the athletic fields or in the band room, I have had the chance to embrace it all.

Next year I'm excited to use all the preparation I have received throughout the years for the real test of life.

I'd like to dedicate my thanks to everyone who has shaped the path I will walk in the future: My Advisor/Wrestling Coach Mr. Johnstone, whose acted as a stoic personal guide throughout all my years at Church Farm School, you mean a lot to me. I truly will miss you dearly, my good friend. To my Wrestling Coach, Mr. Smith, for having faith in the chubby kid within the group and helping build my confidence and personality since joining your wonderful group. As sappy as it may sound, you were like a grandfather to me, and honestly your strong confidence and understanding are things I will dearly miss. To Mr. Fulmer, by far the most fun I've ever had in any class. You stuck by me in APUSH and guided me with the "Grade Eviscerator" (Trade Mark) which once again, as God himself as my witness was harder than the actual APUSH Exam. You taught me a lot, you were like a good friend that I must now depart. I'll dearly miss our time playing Catan together. To Ms. Hayes, thanks for the memories, I'll always smile at our constant banter in and out of class. You helped propel my already gargantuan love of books to a new height. You helped me when I needed it, and gave me fair critiques of my work when no one else would/could. To Ms. Boone, you helped me open up my view of the world, I cannot stress how vital that is for me. Keep doing what you do, everyone needs a stern and honest remark every now and again. You often offer gospel advice if people dare to hear it. Madame Clark, your upbeat energy saved many more of my days than you could ever know, you were a treasure. Ms. Young and Ms. Hughes, thank you for your always kind words and support in my time here. I hope that the bonds you share with your students grow ever stronger. To Tyrone Wrice, we've had a good run here, I wish I could've seen you dash more. You were an excellent cottage parent and friend to me. I wish you the absolute best. To Mr. Thompson, and Coaches Dwyer and Korb, you guys really pushed me into trying sports I never really thought I could ever do. It was definitely an experience that I know I'll never have again - so I humbly offer my thanks to you all Mr. Mazzoli and Mr. Bala, my DECA trainers and comrades. I leave the rest to you, the excellency of our group is astounding. It was a pleasure every step of the way with my partners - Angel, Connor, and Kledian. You all met my expectations, no, you all surpassed it by a mile. I'll miss you all and DECA, wholeheartedly. To Dr. Sharma and Mr. Labrador, you two were by far, the two most difficult classes I've ever had the honor of taking. I came everyday ready to learn concepts I could never imagine, and I always left happy because of it. To everyone else who led me to where I am I bow to all of you. My friends who became family, and strangers who became comrades. Live well, that is my final request as I venture into college. I hope we meet again! Attendre et Esperer

At CFS I have grown far beyond what I ever imagined, I feel more human. My head and heart are clear in what I hope to do with my life, the simple statement 0I don't know - and I'm fine with that1. To accept that I have no real answer to life's greatest questions is what I'll take to heart. I swear these lessons will guide me on my journey. To live and to fight is the way of humankind, it2s where we throw our punches that matter and why.

Alfredo Olaguez

The thing about life is that every step forward throws you off. For next year, I wonder what will become of me? That's the question I lust to answer. It's so unpredictable - my life after college. I welcome the hardships, I welcome the pain, I welcome the good days and the rain. A new location, a new place to go, it's absolutely terrifying but, I can't wait. College has been on my mind for years, so I feel a little unbalanced at the prospect. Yet, here I am, at the cusp of my senior year, readying my goodbyes. I don't know what to do...and it's such a blissful feeling that it numbs me to my very core. The new experiences up ahead of me call my name, and I'll heed their call headfirst.

''In fear and doubt, a single tear starts an ocean, a single word a wish. To those whose names will be sung to the world's end, and to those whose steps will be forgotten, let us sing together a requiem. For the faithful and faithless, for the strong and weak, a solemn song of joy and sorrow to our innocence now forgotten." 83

Thank you to all the wonderful staff and students that have made this journey possible for me. Special thanks to Mr. Fulmer for always pushing me to be the best that I could be and guiding me through every one of my 300 DBQs. Thanks to Mr. Warfel for being a supportive coach and teacher, and never letting my gutters get to him. Thanks to Mr. Keller for putting up with me through four years of advisory and always making sure the fruit snacks never ran out. Thanks to Ms. Campbell for electing to have her previously clean office turn into the senior community center, it helped a lot! Thanks to Ms. Hayes for making sure Disston (D-Block) was the best cottage on campus. Finally, shout out to our junior year0s round table you know who you are.

During my time here at CFS, I don't think that I could truly explain in words how much I have grown mentally. Coming in as a freshman, attributes like confidence, maturity, and independence were not quite there yet. This school has radically changed my level of independence, and has enabled my confidence to grow tremendously. Never before had I believed that I could achieve at such an academic level, and CFS gave me the tools to do so. CFS has forced me to challenge myself in every way, and although there have been some rough days, in the end it all worked out for the best.

After high school, I'm excited to continue to the next step of my academic career, college. I'm ready to utilize the skills that CFS has helped me to develop both in the classroom and out. I0m hoping to bring some of the values that CFS had embedded in me, like brotherhood, to my new school or workplace. I'm excited to see what I have to offer the world and what the world has to offer me. I hope to continue to work on myself and put my best foot forward in everything I set out to do.

Especially my support system, therapists, and coaches: Ms. Hayes, McHale, Ms. Young, Ms. Hughes, Ms. Campbell, Ms. Barr, Fulmer, Ms. Schmidt, Korb, Dwyer, and Serb. I wouldn't be where I am without all of you. Shoutout to those who took different paths as well.

- Rick Riordan

My reluctance to lead didn't last long at CFS.

I am excited for new experiences on the horizon.

I would like to thank JT for The mixtapes. Good looks to Zay for the free wins in fifa. Big thanks to Mr. President for teaching me the art of drip. A big shoutout to all my Disston day one0s and to all my St. Martin0s youngins (and Youssouf). A special thanks to my lil bro Nasir. I will miss you son. Thanks to Ms. Barr for the advice, to Ms. Scott for all the help, and to Ms. Campbell for being super nice. Shoutout to Huncho for sticking with me through all my flaws. Finally, thanks to my parents for always being in my corner. Love you guys

In my time at CFS, I have grown mentally. I stop worrying about little things that don0t matter and I focus on the important things that do.

I am excited to go to college and meet new friends. I know college is going to be difficult, but I also know it0s going to be so much fun.

I want to thank Ms. Peterson, Mr. Dwyer, Mr. GR, Mr. Morrow, Coach Turner, and Mr. Gress for helping me reach success at CFS and also caring about me during my time here. I also want to thank Mr. Thompson and Mr. Sherrill for helping me get my eligibility to play basketball my senior year. I want to thank Joel, Christian, and Elijah for being good brothers to me during my time at CFS.

I think I have grown at CFS by coming into my own as a leader and by learning to love the grind in basketball, music and school.

I am excited for what is to come with my future academically and athletically.

I would like to thank my Mom, Dad, Brother, and Grandmother for all of your support throughout my educational journey. All of you have given your time and effort to help set me up for success. Whenever a roadblock stops me short, you have all provided me with the advice that I need in order to get through it. Without your care and commitment in my life, I wouldn0t be in the same position that I am in today. I appreciate everything that you have done for me, and I thank you for all your hard work to help make me the person that I am. Last, but not least, I would like to thank all of my friends and teachers at Church Farm School who have created a community around me these last four years. Thanks to you, my highschool experience has been successful. Shout out to 2020, we finally made it!

There's a lot of us out here that are birds, man. We all need to just fly.2

I feel that I have grown the most at Church Farm School in terms of being a leader. When I first came in 9th grade, I didn0t see myself as one of those students that would end up becoming a prefect. Once 10th grade came around, my mindset about this started to completely change. I wanted to take on responsibility so I decided to become the president of the art club I was in. After this, I realized that I actually enjoyed guiding students and being looked up to as a role model. Ever since then, I have been taking on the various opportunities given to me. For example, I am part of the National Honor Society, the president of the Honor Council, a prefect, a lead admissions ambassador, and so on. Now that I know what leadership looks like, I feel that I am prepared for college and ready to explore future leadership roles. One of the things that I am most excited for about college is being able to meet new people and dig deeper into my interests. Although it is a little nerve racking to think about, I feel that I am ready to handle a new environment as well as harder courses. On top of this, I am looking forward to getting involved in different clubs and leadership positions. Being an outdoors person, I will definitely want to join a club that does different trips such as rock climbing, kayaking, and camping. In college I will also be able to study abroad and pursue research independently or with a professor. Even though I will miss the community that I have here at Church Farm School, I know that all of us will go on to do great things.

Thank you, Mr. Fulmer.

Coming to CFS in 2016, I was afraid of this completely strange country. However, I soon found out that nobody would laugh at my grammar errors and no groups would exclude me. Golf, tennis, and even history all became part of my life. Thank you, CFS, for guiding me to see the greatness of outside.

The thing that I expect the most after high school is the first completely free summer I will have! Dreaming to be an untypical history teacher, I really want to use this summer to have the experience of teaching children in the Chinese suburban area.

It is our failure to become our perceived ideal that ultimately defines us and makes us unique.2 1

Thanks to my parents, My teachers, My fellow friends, C-Squads, CFS and myself

"Self-control is the quality that distinguishes the fittest to survive." - George Bernard Shaw (Yiwei taught me that)

I am definitely better at English right now. I become more comfortable staying in America. Most importantly, I broadened my horizons. I began to have my personal thoughts and insights on certain events. And I no longer trust everything before researching it.

For me, I just want to go through my life step by step. Getting to a decent college and earning a master's degree are my current goals. Beyond that, I really want to build up relationships in colleges, not just girlfriends but future colleagues. Yet, I will hold my opinion on what I want to do in the future because I am not fully educated enough to decide.

Thank you Whitney Muffson, Nicole Campbell, mi madre (Samantha McRae-Najar), Ms. Scott

I believe I have become a stronger leader and a person who can step up to be the man that I want to be. I have come to an understanding of who I am meant to be, a clear goal to focus all of my efforts, now I can shoot towards that goal.

Next year I am looking forward to the new unique university experience. I also can't wait to meet all of my CFS friends in a diner and reminisce on our fun times at CFS. 92

I want to give a special thanks to my family, for taking a chance in allowing me to come to Church Farm School, and always being my biggest supporter. I also want to give a shoutout to some CFS staff: my advisors Mr. and Mrs. Sherill, Mr. Blair, Coach Wrice, Coach Grant and Ms. Campbell for always making sure we put our best effort forward. I also want to thank my Griffin Brothers, we finally made it.

I have grown a lot during my tenure as a CFS student. The brotherhood that you receive here is real and has allowed me to come out of my shell. Ever since arriving at CFS my freshman year my vocal and leadership skills have improved.

I'm excited to go into the college process, and seeing what colleges me and my classmates get into.

I0ve grown as a person physically of course, but I feel as though I have grown as a leader and mentor for underclassmen at my school.

I0m excited to go to college and experience new people. I would also like to explore and further learn the stock market.

If it was easy, everyone would do it.2

Would I rather be feared or loved? Easy. Both. I want people to be afraid of how much they love me.2 1

Congratulations and best wishes! You've made CFS proud, and I know you will continue to do so. I hope you carry many lessons from your athletic experience with you in the days ahead, and trust that you will stay connected to CFS, as we hope to stay connected with you. 0If you are going to achieve excellence in big things, you develop the habit in little matters. Excellence is not an exception, it is a prevailing attitude.1 2 Colin Powell ~ Mr. Thompson

Don't let mediocrity settle into your spirit, you won't wear it well. ~ Mrs. Scott Find successes in each day. They are cumulative, and occur in every failure that is learned from and every life that we touch. ~ Mrs. Rosinsky I have learned much from many of you over the last 4-6 years, and I am thankful for the relationships we have built. Someone told me that this is supposed to be words of wisdom for when you get to the "real world." Gentlemen, it doesn't get any more real than this... trying to find your passions and bliss, managing competing claims on your time and energies while also finding time for yourself and your relationships. Do more of that last one. Focus on your accomplishments, your family and your friends. Travel. And of course... start investing now. Pay yourself first. ~ Mr. Kent

Go to class. Seems simple enough, but it was a lesson that I personally learned too late. Once I did, my GPA soared as did my passion for learning. ~ Mrs. Claypoole
