CHRIST SCHOOL 2020-21 ANNUAL REPORT

When we look back on the 2020-2021 school year at Christ School, it’s clear that this community experienced one of the most exciting and momentous years in our rich history. My family and I are so excited to join this special community. I am honored to serve as Christ School’s 14th Head of School and grateful for the opportunity to lead this institution in the 20212022 school year and beyond. After 21 years of remarkable service to Christ School, Paul Krieger retired as Christ School’s 13th headmaster. Under his leadership, the school transformed in every way—from athletic success and campus renovations to growing the

student body and improving the academic program. Paul and Beth Krieger left an indelible mark on Christ School that will continue to serve our boys now and in the future. Paul and Beth, thank you. The theme of this year’s annual report is “Growing Together.” You will find thousands of names in this report, each one representing the individual contributions of those who value and support Christ School. The sum of those contributions is nothing short of outstanding.

Together, almost 1200 donors raised $5,887,000 in 20202021 alone, including a record $1,367,000 for the Christ School Fund and $2.2 million for the Krieger Leadership Fund. On “A Day for PK,” more than 550 donors raised $809,000 during Christ School’s first giving day! Thank you. We want to extend special appreciation to the school’s leadership. The Board of Trustees, Alumni Council, and Parent Council work alongside

and in support of our faculty, staff, and administration. Thank you for your commitment and partnership in carrying out our mission. And to our faculty, staff, and administration: thank you for your tireless dedication to serving our boys. Behind each donor and each dollar listed in this report, you will also find a unique Christ School story. Some are alumni who made their first gifts to their alma mater this year. Others are families who

have established and supported scholarships for decades, allowing this institution to enroll an outstanding student body. You will find alumni, parents, and board members who have made planned gifts because they believe in preserving Christ School for the future. And you will also find supporters who give in honor of classmates and teachers who made their Christ School experience exceptional. Each story is a thread in the fabric of Christ School’s narrative,

a legacy rooted in 121 years of history and bonds of brotherhood that span generations and continents. “Growing Together,” Christ School should be proud of what it accomplished in 2020-2021. Thank you for your generosity and belief in this special place. Go Greenies!

Former Board President Bert Scott P’08

PAGE | 4

When Bert Scott P’08 watched his son, Sean, graduate in the spring of 2008, he did not realize that his own Christ School journey was only beginning. Bert just completed a six-year run as president of Christ School’s Board of Trustees during a transformative time in the school’s history. Thirteen years ago, his appreciation for Sean’s experience as a student motivated him to join the board and stay involved with such a special place. “When you’ve had a wonderful experience, as we did during Sean’s time here, sometimes you want to continue it. I felt I could give back in the way of being part of the board,” says Bert. Serving as a board member for six years before his selection as chair, Bert appreciates how that time prepared him to lead Christ School. As a former parent, he quickly learned to value the many alumni voices across generations of Greenies. “I learned the importance of alumni on the board, and keeping their voice on the forefront, even though their experiences may be different than today’s boys. Having that understanding of the culture and the fiber of this place was really important.” When called upon to lead, Bert relied on those same alumni, as well as board members, administrators, and faculty, to provide counsel and insight moving forward. Listening, he would soon learn, is the most important skill for a board leader.

“You have to learn to listen and separate insights from comments. Sometimes it’s hard in a leadership role to get candid feedback, and I worked to understand the needs of constituents and synthesize input into useful information.”

“I have grown to love this school more than I ever thought I would. It’s not just what I see in my son. It’s what I see every time I see a Christ School graduate.”

—Bert Scott

During his tenure as board chair, Christ School experienced a remarkable period of success and growth. Fittingly, Bert’s last year as board chair would turn out to be Paul Krieger’s last year as headmaster. For Bert, overseeing the transition of leadership from Mr. Krieger to Dr. Jenkins would prove to be the highlight of his tenure.

“Probably the top of the list is that we had an orderly and successful transition from Paul to Sean. For me that’s the high point. It was a yearlong process to find the new head, and we were replacing a legend who had been here for 20 years who took this place to new heights. Finding that replacement was critical. Other highlights include the transformation of the school’s physical plant and the completion of a successful capital campaign, as well as expanding and diversifying the board of trustees’ membership. And what about the school’s athletic success? “Maybe a state championship or two,” he says with a laugh. “I always love it when we beat Asheville School.” Bert will remain on the Board of Trustees for another year, and he will stay plenty busy with responsibilities outside of Christ School. He just completed a twoyear term as board chair at the American Heart Association, and serves on several corporate boards, including Lowe’s and Alliance Bernstein. When he’s not working, Bert spends time helping his youngest son finish out high school and loves to travel near and far.

And what advice does he have for Christ School and its current leadership? “The thing that’s important is maintaining the traditions here, and at the same time modernizing the school. Work here is core to what we do. Responsibility is core. You marry today’s curriculum and academic standards with the traditions of the school, and if you marry them well, then this is a great place.” When he looks back on more than 15 years as a Christ School parent and board member, Bert realizes that his Christ School story is rooted in deep affection. “I have grown to love this school more than I ever thought I would. It’s not just what I see in my son. It’s what I see every time I see a Christ School graduate. When I see how our graduates live their lives, it excites me. I think we do an outstanding job taking boys and turning them into men.”

“A boy may arrive at Christ School with a modest set of goals. If we are doing our job, he leaves with a far greater sense of who he is and what he might become. And he leaves grateful for the relationships he has forged with faculty who care, with a keen sense of values that endure, with greater confidence, and with a healthy appreciation for taking appropriate risks.”

Supporters of Christ School came together to honor the Kriegers with two outstanding giving opportunities. Christ School established the Krieger Leadership Fund,

—Paul Krieger Christ School also hosted “A Day for PK,” the first giving day in school history. In just one day, more than 550 donors raised almost $810,000 in honor of the Kriegers. Mark Whitney ’80 knows that planned giving means different things to different people. For Mark, planned giving with Christ School is a way to support a place he fell in love with from the moment he set foot on campus in the fall of 1977. For many reasons, he hopes others will follow his lead and leave Christ School in their estate plans. “You can benefit your children and your family, while also serving and providing for future generations at Christ School,” says Mark. The importance of giving back was instilled in Mark from an early age. His mother, Sally Serenius, supported Christ School generously for many years. She expected that her son would do the same after he graduated. In turn, Mark has sought to instill these same values in his sons, Hayes ’06 and Josh ’09. “I knew my mom would want me to create a fund that would give back to others, and an endowed scholarship will help future students at Christ School. Now our family has a responsibility to build up that fund and put it to good work.”

The Whitney family plans to continue growing their scholarship endowment, the Hayes ‘06 & Josh Whitney ‘09 Fund, now and in the future. For Mark, his planned gift is a way to both grow the family’s fund and strengthen what he feels is the most important resource for the Christ School: the endowment.

Mark hopes that others will join him in supporting the endowment with a planned gift. As a board trustee, alumnus, and parent of two Greenies, he thinks everyone has a stake in Christ School’s future.

“You have to pay it forward. The way the school is structured: It’s all about what you give back. You can’t just take. —Mark Whitney ’80 “I’m passionate about the endowment. I want to see it continue to grow, to match the quality of our physical plant, the administration and faculty, and our students. Endowment growth is critical to the financial stability of the school, and as such, the board has identified growing it as a top priority.”

“You have to pay it forward. The way the school is structured: It’s all about what you give back. You can’t just take. If the school gives to you and you give back to the school, that’s what makes this place work.”

The Class of 1970 reunited in May of 2021 to celebrate a long overdue 50th Reunion. Fourteen classmates returned to campus for a special weekend, which included a celebration of the class’s outstanding generosity through the Class of 1970 Scholarship. The Class of 1970 established their scholarship in 1980 during their 10th Reunion, as a memorial to their deceased classmates and as a way to provide the opportunity for a deserving student to experience the camaraderie and life lessons afforded by a Christ School education. Those same experiences and lessons continue to enrich the bonds of brotherhood shared by the Class of 1970. Dabney Ewin ’70 assisted classmates who wished to establish life insurance policies that would extend the scholarship’s duration and availability of funds. The scholarship also serves as a model for other classes and was part of the school’s effort to encourage giving and strengthen the endowment. Thanks to the exceptional generosity of class

members, the scholarship’s endowed fund is now almost $250,000. The Class of 1970 is a wonderful example of a class that relies on everyone to pitch in, and Alumni Weekend was no exception. Tom Burke ’70 handled communications for the extended period of reunion planning. King Logan ’70 rallied the troops for a Zoom Reunion around Christmas 2020. Tommy Westfeldt ‘70 and his wife, Linda, provided lodging and dining for Alumni Weekend at the Rugby Grange. Tom Seitz ’70 and Polk Van Zandt ’70 led the class in a memorial service for their deceased classmates. David Harris ’70 flew from Alaska and brought freshly-caught salmon to pair with a lowcountry feast provided by Richard Stoney’s ’70 restaurant in Charleston. Bob Washburn ’70 brought bison from Utah, and Jim McNutt ’70 provided everything from dessert to wooden plaques in commemoration of the reunion. The class mantra for the weekend was “Forever Brothers.” As students during the 1960s,

0’7

the class experienced a time of upheaval and uncertainty— but also shared good times and lasting memories. The bond built during their years together at Christ School has remained strong. There is no doubt that the Class of 1970 will return in force for an exuberant 55th in 2025.

When the Class of 2012 graduated almost 10 years ago, giving back to Christ School was not their top priority. But class members knew that they valued their friendships with one another and their time at Christ School, and those bonds have only strengthened over time. During the 2020-2021 school year, the Class of 2012 emerged as leaders in giving for Christ School alumni. The class achieved the highest participation percentage

for alumni classes giving to Christ School, with 52% of members making gifts. But more importantly, they led the charge on “A Day for PK,” with 26 class members giving in honor Mr. Krieger. “The Class of 2012’s success on ‘Day for PK’ is a direct reflection on Mr. Krieger and how important he was to our class,” says McKay Tye ’12, who serves as a class agent alongside Thomas Beard ’12, Miller Robinson ’12, and Kelton Lastein ‘12. “The

Kriegers had a positive impact, not only on our class, but also on each of us as individuals.” The Class of 2012 also had fun on “Day for PK,” engaging in a friendly competition with the Class of 2014 that lasted all the way until midnight! Members of the Class of 2012 have discovered other meaningful ways to give back to the school. Will Foley ’12 and Miller Robinson ’12 wanted to find a way to make a lasting contribution that would honor their classmates. The former roommates decided to dedicate their senior-year dorm room, Harris 116, as the Class of 2012 Room. “We made a lot of good friends in our class and still remain close, so we thought it was fitting to name the room for the Class of 2012,” says Miller. “Christ School was a great experience, and I wanted to do something to give back and support the school.” As the Class of 2012 approaches its 10th Reunion in May of 2022, their bonds and commitment to Christ School are stronger than ever.

When Jim Switzer ’76 attended Christ School, he was required to write a letter to his grandmother, Mercer Vance Wise, each week. In those days, the school asked boys to send a letter to the person who paid for their Christ School education. “She was the person who made it possible for me to go to Christ School, and this place shaped the man I am today,” says Jim. More than 30 years later, the Switzer-Wise Scholarship has provided the opportunity for generations of Greenies to remain connected through the bonds of Christ School, while also receiving a transformative education. “In 1989, during one of my last visits with my grandmother, we decided to establish a scholarship at Christ School for legacy students.” For Jim and his brother, Paul Switzer ’73, P’20, P’20, keeping Christ School in the family is an important tradition to preserve. Paul’s own twin sons, Kent Switzer ’20 and Barton Switzer ’20, continued the family legacy. The Switzer family also wanted to help other families continue this tradition.

Fayette ’86 and Billy ’21 Thackston know firsthand what the SwitzerWise Scholarship can do for a legacy family. Billy followed in his father’s footsteps and attended Christ School for his last two years of high school. Now as a first-year student at the University of Texas, he realizes what the Switzer-Wise Scholarship provided for him. “It was special for me to attend my father’s alma mater. We sat in the same classrooms, played on the same fields, and walked on the same grounds–all while having my own unique experience at Christ School. I will always be grateful that the Switzer-Wise Scholarship made my time here possible,” says Billy. The Switzers hope to grow their endowed fund to $1 million in the coming years, which would allow them to provide significant support for multiple legacy students. But growing the Switzer- Wise Scholarship also serves another vital purpose. “The scholarship is also important to me because it serves the endowment. The endowment will provide stability for Christ School in the future, and I think family scholarships are one of the best ways

to make that possible,” says Jim. As the Switzers continue to grow their endowed fund in years to come, they will make it possible for future generations of Greenie legacies to enrich the Christ School community.

“The scholarship is also important to me because it serves the endowment. The endowment will provide stability for Christ School in the future, and I think family scholarships are one of the best ways to make that possible.” —Jim Switzer ’76

“Christ School partnered with us during important years of our sons’ development. Their individual strengths, interests, and challenges were embraced and respected by the school from day one.”

Christ School students join a community with unlimited opportunities to grow and learn, and yet no boy’s experience is the same. When Connor Booher ‘20 arrived at Christ School in 2016, he could not imagine how the unique opportunities offered by Christ School would shape his path forward. “From developing interests in social policy and economics to working with local nonprofits, the opportunities afforded to me by Christ changed the course of my life, and the Loomis Scholarship made that education possible.” Now in his second year at Duke, Connor is pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Economics with a Finance concentration. Doris and Ralph Loomis P’10, P’13, P’16 established the Loomis Scholarship to create an opportunity for young men like Connor to experience the same education that transformed their sons Graylyn ’10, Chambers ’13, and Kiffen ’16. “Christ School partnered with us during important years of our sons’ development. Their individual strengths, interests, and challenges were embraced and

respected by the school from day one. We recognized that there were many other young men who would benefit equally from what Christ School offered if they were provided with the same opportunities and encouragement,” says Doris. One of the ways Christ School partnered with the Loomis family was by creating the Notes from the Soul program. Chambers Loomis ’13 wanted to share his passion for piano and music with others. He worked with Olga Mahoney P’20, Director of Service Learning, to start a new program that would bring music to students in the local community who might not otherwise be able to experience the arts. Kiffen Loomis ’16 would continue to grow and lead the program after Chambers graduated. It’s fitting that Phillip Lopez ’23, the second and current recipient of the Loomis Scholarship, has been actively involved with Notes from the Soul since he arrived as an 8th grader. “Christ School is a place where I have learned a lot, met new people, and discovered things I am passionate about, such as Notes from the Soul,” says Phillip. For the Loomis Family, following

the progress and growth of the scholarship recipients has proved to be one of the most rewarding aspects of establishing this scholarship. “Connor immersed himself in Christ School and formed an invaluable connection with the school. Phillip is doing the same at this time. Both recognize the lifelong impact the school has on its students and on its graduates. We savor the opportunity to watch them ascend,” says Doris. As a new board member, Doris is excited about the future of Christ School. She also appreciates that supporting a scholarship creates opportunities for young men who will do much more than succeed at Christ School. “The Christ School students of today want to be at the school and understand the responsibility which comes along with the opportunity to be there. Expanding the pool of those who can attend the school not only strengthens the institution, but also guarantees a greater positive impact by its graduates when they enter the world beyond Christ School.”
