From the Principal’s Office What an exciting year 2017 has been for Saint Saviour High School! First and foremost, I would like to thank our donors for their continued support of our school. Approximately 25% of our donors have been giving for 10-15 years (some even longer) which is fantastic! The support of our generous Saviour community of alumnae, parents and friends enables the mission of the School Sisters of Notre Dame to continue to thrive in the minds and hearts of our students. Meeting many of our alumnae at the 100th Anniversary Gala in June of 2017 was a tremendous honor. There were over 500 attendees at this event at Gargiulo’s and it was a rousing success!! Rounding out our centennial celebration was our 100th Anniversary Mass in September, where I also enjoyed seeing many alumnae and former/current parents, as well as many members of our surrounding Park Slope community and several School Sisters of Notre Dame! I had the pleasure of spending some time with Bishop DiMarzio after the Mass and he had only wonderful things to say about Saint Saviour High School, which filled me with such pride and humility to be part of this amazing community. When Christine told me that the theme of this year’s Annual Report was Panda Pride my first reaction was – I see Panda Pride all day, every day! I see it in our teachers’ passion in their classrooms, our students’ excitement to learn and be fully present every day (even after a late night of practice or studying). I see our championship volleyball team, our Shalom Club volunteers, our art students, our gospel choir – all of this is Panda Pride. Panda Pride is timeless – 500 of our alums at the 100th Celebration? That is the ultimate Panda Pride! We are incredibly blessed to experience it every day in our building on 6th street. If you have the opportunity – please come back and observe our Panda Pride in person!! Our door is always open. As we prepare for our future, we look forward to some new projects including updating our classrooms for collaborative learning and making some upgrades to our chemistry lab. We have already successfully instituted a Google Chromebook initiative and we are excited to move forward with more exciting developments. However, it is important to know that the more forward-thinking we become, the more aware and appreciative we are of the School Sisters of Notre Dame. Their ground-breaking vision and mission, along with their tenacity to ensure young women are respected and valued in the world, is important now more than ever. We are thrilled to continue to move forward into the future by respecting, treasuring, and acknowledging our roots. We will have more information to follow on future developments soon.

From the Board of Advisors Alumnae, Students, Faculty, Administration, Staff, Parents and Friends, Panda Pride! As I close on ten years of being President of our Board of Advisors, I certainly look back with pride on our School’s accomplishments and continuing growth in this our 100th Anniversary Year. From the start of an idea that blossomed at a 90th Anniversary Meeting, the creation of the Board of Advisors provided support and skillsets necessary to further the mission of our School. Our foundation was set in place by the School Sisters of Notre Dame whose mission of “Transforming the World Through Education” and “Proclaiming the Good News” created our journey which leads us forward capable of ensuring that mission. Being a Board Member allowed me to be part of a group whose true passion is ensuring that our School continues for another 100 years. They are an example of Panda Pride. It also shows respect to our Faculty and Administration whose everyday contributions exemplify that pride. Being a Board of Advisor gave me an opportunity to say thank you to our alma mater and the community I was blessed to be part of and to my parents who sacrificed to provide me with this valuable education. Whether meeting students at Song Contest or potential students at Open Houses, the evidence is there—our School stands strong with its eye to the future. I am thankful for the opportunity to serve our School and look forward to the next group of committed individuals being part of keeping our foundation strong and continue to show Panda Pride. Thank you for the opportunity to serve our School. Onward and Upward! Judy Fallon President, Saint Saviour High School Board of Advisors

Student Highlights education sectors and grade levels) by recognizing exemplary teachers in the spring, and exemplary schools & principals in the winter—the Awards serve to help our readership learn about the top schools and education leaders in the city, and allow NY Family Magazine to celebrate some of the city’s hardest-working and often unsung heroes: Educators! The Gaelic Society partnered with St. Bernard’s Catholic Academy to collect new socks which will be given to veterans’ organizations. Over 700 pairs of socks were donated along with 15 boxes of toiletries from St. Bernard’s Catholic Academy. Saint Saviour High School’s Gaelic Society earned back to back awards from the NYC St. Patrick’s Day Parade committee as a result of their outstanding participation marching in the parades. They earned 1st place in 2017 and 2nd place in 2016.

St. Saviour students attended the Talking Science Lecture at Rockefeller University, designed to engage high school students and their teachers through interactive lectures and demonstrations. This annual event, led by a member of Rockefeller’s world-class faculty, is offered at no cost to the students or school. Physics students built catapults using simple everyday items. The catapults had various angles and various speeds which helped the projectiles hit different targets. As part of their study of Modern Genetics, the Biology students each constructed their own model of a gene. All of the genes were connected to build a giant DNA model.

Saint Saviour has been selected as a school of excellence and won a Blackboard award from NY Family Magazine! We earned this award via nominations from our school community including parents, students, faculty, staff and alums. Since 2002, the Blackboard Awards have honored excellence in local education (in all 4

Student Highlights Hospital. Both applied on the hospital’s website and were accepted to be volunteers throughout the hospital. They work with patients - both young and old - for 2-3 hours a day, twice week. Aviance ‘18 took classes at the Cooper Union Outreach Pre-College Art Portfolio Program. She has attended programs at Cooper in the past and her selection for this free class series in March and April is recognition of her superior talent as an artist. Our 2016-17 Cheerleading Squad took 3rd place at the GCHSAA Competition on March 18 at Queens College. Lauren ‘17 made the 2017 NYC Mayor’s Cup All-Star Basketball Team and Meghan ‘17 represented Saint Saviour at the 2017 Mayor’s Cup for Softball at Fordham University.

Daniella ‘18 and Christina ‘18 are giving back to the community by volunteering at NewYorkPresbyterian Brooklyn Methodist

Christina ‘18 and Mary Therese ‘18 interned for a week at the office of the Brooklyn District Attorney. They were chosen for this opportunity in a competitive, borough-wide selection process. The girls, both interested in law and government, learned quite a lot about the workings of the legal system and recommend the internship program to next year’s junior class. Abigail ‘18 and Isabella ‘18, were among five students from Brooklyn, selected in a competitive process, to attend a week-long leadership seminar in Government, at SUNY Brockport, in June. The program, the Empire Girls State, sponsored by the American Legion is designed to introduce young women to every aspect of running state government. The goal of the program is to help students to better understand democratic ideals and the part we as individuals play in carrying out these ideals. Qualified high school juniors are selected to become citizens of and participate in creating a mythical 51st State,

Student Highlights from the county to the state level. This mythical 51st state is divided into 11 counties, each named after famous women and the citizens, assigned to either the Nationalist or Federalist Party, experience the two party system, much like our Government. Life as a midshipman at the United States Naval Academy is no easy task yet over 2,550 rising seniors attend a week long seminar discovering if the navy is right for them. Teresa ‘18, spent her week training with the battalion while watching the sun rise over Annapolis, spending time with her platoon in Bancroft Hall while memorizing everything on the rate sheet, taking classes taught by academy professors and midshipman on the Yard and participating in intramurals and squad competitions in preparation for Sea Trials and Indoc. Teresa was so inspired by her experience and is planning to apply to the US Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD where alumna Madeleine ‘16 is studying and will graduate in 2021. Madeleine will be majoring in either English, Political Science or Arabic and is a member of the Cheerleading Team and the Gospel Choir. Daniella ‘18 received a taste of college life by 6

staying at the Brooklyn campus of LIU for their Summer Honors Institute: Choosing a Path in Health Care program. In addition to becoming CPR certified during her stay at LIU, she also took a full load of classes each day, including applied physiology, anatomy, health medicine and drug information needs, fall prevention, the challenges of asepsis, and exercise, wellness, & disease prevention. Over the course of the week, Daniella was taught by health professionals including nurses, physician assistants, pharmacists, social and public health workers, physical occupational therapists, and speech pathologists.

Teresa ‘18 and Julie ‘18 were able to work with engineers at Manhattan College, Riverdale, NY, this summer as part of the Manhattan College Summer Program - Engineering and Science. The program allowed students to explore the different fields of engineering to better prepare them for their future careers. Between working with CAD software in the Leo Engineering Building to building water filtration devices in the environmental lab, the ten day program was fast paced and extremely informational. Engineers, contracting groups, and Manhattan College alumni came to speak about their experiences

resources to help alleviate their symptoms. They also pitched their app to Moody’s executives and board members. Briana ‘19 was accepted into the New York University High School Law Institute (“HSLI”), a free program offered at NYU. The classes are taught by NYU Law students and are broken down into discussions, classroom activities and analysis of criminal law, constitutional law, mock trial, and moot court. Program graduation is in March, and this includes a mock trial which students “compete” against a similar group from Columbia University.

Justine ‘19 is a graduate of the 2017 Girls Who Code Summer Immersion Program where she spent 7 weeks this summer learning programming languages (such as Python, Javascript, HTML and CSS), web development, robotics, cybersecurity, received mentoring from IT executives at Moody’s Investor Service, went on field trips, created a website from scratch, and pitched her project with her teammates to an audience that included a member of the company’s board of directors and president of the company foundation. 100th Anniversary Celebration and Mass Thank you to the almost 500 alumnae and guests who attended our 100th Anniversary Celebration on June 11 at Gargiulo’s Restaurant! What an awesome day celebrating with each of you! It was our pleasure to plan and make sure this event was the best celebration for our school and you all made sure it was a party! From our amazing guest speakers – Dr. Michele Lane ‘60, Rosemary Salomone ‘64 and Judy Smith Fallon ’79 to our awesome student helpers and all those who donated and purchased our auction items and 50/50 plus those who helped send the many SSND’s to this event – we thank you. It was a day that will live in our memories forever. We raised $13,000 at the event which went directly towards our school and students. You made a difference in the lives our students! On September 23, just over 200 of you joined us for the 100th Anniversary Mass at Saint Saviour Church, celebrated by Bishop DiMarzio. Your presence at the Mass and then at the cocktail party further showed how strong our Panda Pride is. Thank you again for making 2017 a year to remember! Hail to Saint Saviour and Panda Pride!
