Wow! Just over three months ago our world turned upside down. Our annual

At the time we didn’t anticipate just how long it would take to roll out of this pandemic. This has been an extremely challenging time for many of us, both personally and professionally. While we struggle to make sense of everything going on in our world, we are all adapting to a new way of doing things. And this is no easy feat. The Chamber has deep roots in Westchester, Playa del Rey, Playa Vista, Del Rey and Marina del Rey. The organization began over 67 years ago to promote business and enhance the vitality of the community. A lot has changed in our area since 1953, but some things remain the same, like our organization’s unwavering dedication to the communities we serve. We will continue to be here to help our businesses get through these unprecedented times. We will continue to be a pillar in the community and support the organizations that make up the fabric of our wonderful neighborhoods. We will

While those numbers will undoubtedly take a hit as a result of the lockdown, a myriad of new projects should help the area recover quickly. A spacious 13,000-square-foot store with little tributes to Marina del Rey, like rowing club oars and other touches, this location will also have dinghy docks installed in the near future to cater to boaters. Trader Joe’s is walking distance to some of Marina del Rey’s attractions, including Burton Chace Park, and provides an affordable option for boaters who wish to dine on the water or picnic in the park. Convention Board. “We know our visitors from around the globe actively seek quintessential waterfront activities during their time in the Los Angeles area, and there’s no better place for them to enjoy sailing, jet-skiing, kayaking, yacht charters and paddle boarding than L.A.’s Marina.” Kim Hart, general manager of the Marina del Rey Marriott Hotel, said the area has developed a special vibe among visitors. She said her guests, whether they are in town for business or pleasure, love the marina simply because it offers a vacation feel in the middle of one of the country’s fastest moving cities. “Marina del Rey is the oasis,” she said ‘The marina continues to be an escape.” Still, Hart said the marina offers a unique blend of visitor amenities such as cruise boats, watersports and cycling while at the same time catering to a changing demographic of residents who call Marina del Rey “home.” “What you see in Marina del Rey you don’t see anywhere else,” she said. “There are high-rise apartments on the water, businesses, jobs, fun things to do, parks. There’s a lot to be said about the convenience of where we are located. It’s just a very, very unique location.” Now, with the renewal and expiration of a variety of leases throughout the marina area, the community is experiencing a renaissance. “The marina is finally coming of age,” said Kelly King, general manager/dock master for Villa del Mar Apartments and Marina. “The average age of residents is dropping, and there is so much to do. It really encourages people to stay in the neighborhood.” 10 | www.laxcoastal.com

what’s happening in the marina A snapshot of what’s to come in 2020. The Oxford Retention Basin - A pretty park with a scenic nature loop can now be found at the once smelly site of the flood control basin in Marina del Rey. The Oxford Retention Basin offers beautiful views of the water and wildlife along its walking trail and bike path. After removing 3,000 feet of contaminated soil and planting over 730 new trees and 45,000 plants, this almost unrecognizable transformation has created yet another gorgeous place to stroll in the Marina. Marvin Braude Coastal Bike Trail - Beginning at the mouth of the Ballona wetlands, cyclists can enjoy an uninterrupted 22-mile ride south along the sunny Southern California coastline between Will Rogers and Torrance beaches. This scenic bike path provides beautiful ocean views through Playa del Rey’s less-populated beach’s, past Manhattan Beach’s volleyball games and ending at the pier in Torrance Beach. Need a rest along the way? Catch a free concert in the Marina’s Fisherman Village plaza. Marina del Rey Activities on the Water - Out there, in the wide open air, the Marina offers a plethora of activities on the water. Wether you are interested in learning to paddle board, taking a yoga class, or learning to surf, the Marina has an activity suited to you. Take a paddle boarding lesson at Paddle Method located in “Mother’s” Beach, rent kayaks and paddleboards by the hour at Pro SUP shop, or make the ocean your yoga mat with YOGAqua, also located in the calm waters off “Mother’s” Beach. Holiday Boat Parade - Very few things are quite as charming as this annual parade, making it one of the most beloved experiences in the Marina. Spectators gather around Fisherman’s Village and Burton Chace Park with blankets and picnics to watch 70 boats illuminated with holiday lights and decorations glide through the marina. The highly ornamented boats are competing in categories that include Best Theme, Best Animation, Best Band and many others. This year’s parade will take place on December 12, 2020. 12 | www.laxcoastal.com

Marina del Rey Boat Rentals - Self-explore the harbor and beyond by kayak, sailboat, motor boat, electric Duffy boat, or jet ski. Kayak by a family of sealions sunning themselves on the docks, or go enjoy the sunset with a group of your friends or work colleagues on a Duffy boat in the wide open ocean. Hourly rentals are available and no special license is required. Look for the kiosk behind El Torito restaurant in Fisherman’s Village. Happy Hour - There is no shortage of fantastic Happy Hour spots in Marina del Rey, and here Happy Hour comes with a complimentary sunset view! If you are looking for a place to kick back with your work friends after the day is through, catch the daily happy hour from 4-6 at Salt Restaurant & Bar or sample the Small Bites menu at Cast & Plow. If you’re looking for a little added entertainment, stop by Marina Bar & Grill on a Friday night for some live music out on the patio. Marina del Rey Farmers Market - The outdoor market takes place on Saturdays year-round from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in County Parking Lot #11 at Admiralty Way and Panay Way. Shop weekly for fresh flowers, fruits and vegetables, gourmet and organic foods, handmade gift items including jewelry, home decor, and other unique items that make special gifts for loved ones. Take a stroll through the market while enjoying live music from local singer-songwriters.

Thank You to Our First Responders Protectors Appreciation Week, February 24-28, 2020 Chamber and local businesses thank first responders. In February of 2020 the Chamber presented a new program to thank our first responders called Protectors Appreciation Week. Instead of hosting Protectors Appreciation

the normal Protectors Luncheon only inviting a handful of officers, the appreciation week brought the event to each station to say thank you to the brave women and men that serve the community. With the support of chamber businesses and volunteers, local fire stations, the MDR Sheriff’s Department, LA County Life Guards, LAX Police and Pacific Division Police Officers were treated with gift baskets, raffle prizes, catered lunch, hand-made cards from local school students and a ton of gratitude. While the luncheon only impacted about 50 protectors, this new week-long event enabled the chamber to reach nearly 500 first responders to say “thank you.” “This event went above and beyond our expectations. Building relationships with our protectors is important to our businesses and community. It was very gratifying to meet and thank the men and women who consistently put their lives on the line to protect us everyday,” said Christina Davis, President/CEO of the Chamber. Major sponsors of the week included Rainbow Acres Washington Blvd., Drollinger Family Charitable Foundation, Cedars-Sinai, Facebook, Kaiser Permanente, Decron Properties, The Coleman Family, SoCalGas, Truxton’s American Bistro, Gateway LA, HHLA and Benny’s Tacos. Please join us in celebrating Protectors Appreciation Week next year, January 25-29, 2021.

The Midfield Satellite Concourse With major events coming to Los Angeles like the Superbowl in 2022 and the Olympic Games in 2028, LAX is making massive improvements to alleviate congestion and make the airport experience more seamless and receptive to large crowds. The Midfield Satellite Concourse is just one piece to that puzzle. This new development will house 12 new gates at the airport, with potential to include as many as 15. The building is not directly connected to any established terminal, but passengers will access it through an underground tunnel that will begin at Tom Bradley International. There are several LAX Coastal Chamber members that are involved in the construction of this new satellite concourse. Corgan is the lead design firm for the project, and the construction is being done through a joint venture with PCL and Turner Construction. Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield will be in charge of the food, beverage, and retail locations that will be going into the Midfield Satellite Concourse. Once completed, this will be a 750,000 square foot building with similar oceanic and aquatic themes that Tom Bradley already has in its design. While Tom Bradley was built to depict a wave, the new Midfield Satellite Concourse will be reminiscent of an ocean swell. The tunnel that will be connecting Tom Bradley with the new terminal will include video panels and an audio system to play music or other recordings. David Kim, senior project manager said, “The concept was the waves cresting and breaking on the beach so you have a somewhat of an under-the-water feel down below. 28 | www.laxcoastal.com

financial/insurance services New York Life Implements Child ID Program New York Life has a safety-oriented program for agents to host in their own communities that is designed to help children learn how to stay safe in the home, at play or wherever they happen to be. All children in the program receive a New York Life-issued Child ID. Having this Child ID will give parents or guardians peace of mind knowing that, should anything happen to their child, they will have an ID with vital information to distribute to the local authorities. New York Life has worked with many local fire and police departments, schools, Boy and Girl Scout troops, hospitals and medical specialists, youth and senior centers, food pantries, athletic clubs, tutoring services, The Red Cross, Goodwill and many Chambers of Commerce. Child IDs are created using the EZ Child ID System, the nation’s most comprehensive digital fingerprinting child identification system. Created with the help from the National CHIP foundation and law enforcement officials, this system ensures that the digital fingerprints meet industry standards by capturing all vital information required by the Amber Alert system. In only 3 to 5 minutes, a Child ID card is printed for each parent or guardian free of charge. Child ID cards feature a child’s photo, fingerprints, contact information, and other pertinent data needed by the police in case of an emergency. A Child ID event encourages family and safety-oriented businesses and organizations to interact with members of our community in a relaxed, fun environment. In addition, the event can also open the door for unique friendships and interactions between families and local businesses and organizations. Helping to protect families is at the heart of what New York Life does. They are committed to making a difference in local communities across the country. Article courtesy of Tracy Toia

Teaching students how to vote

Did you know that 4 million kids turn 18 every year? This year, 1 in 10 voters will be from Generation Z (born after 1996). This generation tends to be more impassioned, more engaged in activism, more aware and more informed than any other generation in the past. With that being said, are they learning the basic life skills necessary to function as independent adults? Or utilize critical thinking and decision-making to make informed decisions? With the 2020 election around the corner, many important and life changing topics will hit the ballot, including the Presidential election. There is a new technology, founded right here in SoCal that will help guide individuals through the 2020 election. GradVote is a free in-school curriculum and mobile app that teaches students how to vote. The curriculum, taught nationwide, helps teachers guide students to identify their personal values and learn the detriment of their generation not voting. The mobile app provides a portal for non-partisan candidate information and mock voting. The mock voting portion uses non-partisan or government supplied voting materials to state the proposition, then simplifies the issues and prepares users to vote. It eliminates confusion by identifying what perspectives YES/NO voters share on a particular issue prior to actually confirming and casting the mock vote. The curriculum’s goal is to deliver thought-provoking feelings about voting to create a habitual desire to fulfill their civic duty at 18, and the mobile app creates informed voters. Although it’s starting with the youth vote, the mobile app will be available to everyone (in English and Spanish) late this summer. Informed voting matters. GradVote gets you there. 40 | www.laxcoastal.com

food & beverage Brooklyn Water Bagel Co. 310.645.2243 | brooklynwaterbagels.com What’s the secret to the perfect bagel? According to Brooklyn Water Bagel Co., it’s all in the water. Brooklynized® water to be precise. By using their proprietary water treatment system, known as “Brooklyn Water Works,” Brooklyn Water Bagel® can successfully replicate the natural composition of the water that flows through the Catskill Mountains in upstate New York into the homes of Brooklyn residents. This replication is accomplished by filtering local water down to its purest, most natural state, and then adding unique elements found only in their water. This advanced technology allows them to transform any source of tap water in the world into clean, safe drinking water, which is used in every recipe, beverage, ice cube, and kettle used to boil their bagels. Boiling the bagels in Brooklynized® water results in NY style bagels that are crunchy on the outside and chewy on the inside. Stop by their Westchester location at 8736 S. Sepulveda Blvd. We highly recommend the Smoked Salmon, Cream Cheese, Tomato & Red Onion on Plain Bagel, otherwise known as The Williamsburg.

The Chamber of Commerce and Education in Our Community Since the early days of the Chamber, supporting education in our community has been a focus. We do this both with our own programming and by partnering with strategic partners in our community like the Rotary Clubs, Kiwanis, LMU, Otis, Boys & Girls Club, YMCA and so many others. Here are just a few ways in which the Chamber supports our local community. The Chamber’s Education Committee brings together principals, key administrators, teachers and business/nonprofit leaders to share best practices and provide valuable resources. The Teacher Eddy Awards is a gala to celebrate outstanding teachers of the year from each of the area schools. This year, despite the Covid pandemic and the Safer at Home Order, the Chamber hosted its first ever virtual event and received over 1300 views on social media. During this event, each teacher was highlighted, thanked and presented with their award as well as given a gift bag full of treats sponsored by the local business community. In 2017, the Chamber leadership helped reinvigorate the Westchester Playa Education Foundation which had been dormmate for over 8 years and relaunched the foundation as the LAX Coastal Education Foundation. Today, the foundation serves over 12,000 students and to date has helped raise over $200,000 for our area schools. The LAX Chamber of Commerce is a business organization, but it is also an organization that works to promote and enhance the vitality of community. If you would like to find out more about the benefits of joining the Chamber, visit www.laxcoastal.com. 46 | www.laxcoastal.com

hospitality We think it may be time for a staycation. Have you been locked inside your house for months? Are you tired of sitting at the same chair, in the same room, surrounded by the same people? Do you love your family, but may have finally had enough of them? If you answered yes to any of these questions, it may be time for a staycation by the beach! Living on the westside of Los Angeles, we seem to forget how lucky we are to reside in a place millions of people around the world dream of visiting. It is so easy to be consumed by our daily routine and habits, that we often-times ignore the fact that we have one of the world’s greatest destination spots just minutes away. From Marina del Rey to LAX you will find some of the most beautiful, relaxing, and inviting hotels for you and your loved ones. Close to the airport we have several options for prime staycation spots. The line of high class hotels down Century Blvd would be a great place to start. There are also wonderful options in El Segundo and Culver City that are ready to host you, and if you want to spend a weekend near the beach, you can not go wrong with Playa del Rey or Venice. So what are you waiting for? Pack your bags, and have the vacation you deserve without having to worry about the traveling time and expenses!

Getting Through COVID-19 It is evident that COVID-19 brought a lot of challenges to businesses around the world, and it was no different here in our LAX Coastal community. The Chamber felt the pain for every member that experienced some type of loss in business due to COVID-19 and were extremely excited when we heard good news about businesses opening or picking back up. We thought we would share our three secrets to surviving COVID-19 in business… communication, flexibility, and value. We are very fortunate to live in a time where virtual communications are accessible and easy to use. Although we could not join together in person with our business community, that did not mean we had to stop providing valuable resources and communicating important messages. We understood very quickly that communication was going to be key to supporting our clients. During this critical time, businesses needed our help more than ever and whether we communicated with a phone call or an email to ask people how they were doing—reaching out proved to go a very long way. Flexibility has been a must to help businesses. As you may imagine, it is hard to pay your bills when you have little to no revenue coming in the door. While the Chamber is a membership organization, we realized the importance of embracing the entire business community. It was important that we all stay connected to our community and collaborate to share resources. We have worked with our business community to provide flexible payment plans, as well as, offer free resources that benefit their business. Last but not least, our programming also had to be relevant. In order for our businesses to heal, we needed to provide access to information that would help get them back on their feet. We partnered with countless organizations to provide the information they needed on access to capital, online tools, networking and more. We hosted several zoom presentations, meetings, and seminars weekly and kept our programming relevant. These last few months have not been easy, but we are here to help our business community grow and thrive. To find out more about the benefits of membership, visit www.laxcoastal.com

marketing & communications Stay Frosty Media 323.741.4502 | stayfrostymedia.com Starting a video production company in LA, the team at Stay Frosty Media knew they had to differentiate themselves in order to be successful in an oversaturated market. As they brainstormed about their potential clients they realized local, small businesses appeared to be most in need of high-quality video content. With that in mind, they built Stay Frosty Media to be highly accessible to small business owners. Their goal is to help small businesses grow and thrive by creating engaging videos. Because they are always conscious of ways they can save both time and money for their clients, they shoot all of their videos on an iPhone. This unique aspect of their business usually leads to some shock and disbelief, but with the right tools, experience, and knowledge, Stay Frosty Media has proven professional video production is possible on a smartphone. Their clients continue to be highly satisfied with the completed project and most importantly find the experience to be rewarding and fun! Jason and David are honored to use their creative talents and technical skills to tell the stories of the local businesses that make the community so special.

medical & care services At Home Nursing Care 310.692.9627 | athomenursingcare.com

At-Home Nursing Care has been providing quality in-home care services in Los Angeles and San Diego for almost 11 years now. Owner, Lauren Reynolds, started this business after her own experience of her mother being diagnosed with terminal breast cancer, and Lauren having to work very hard to fulfill her mother’s wishes of spending her last days at home. What started off as a passion to be sure more people had more access and resources to at home care, Lauren has turned into a successful service that has taken care of people inside the comfort of their own homes for a decade now. Always thinking about how they can impact more people, and make more positive differences in their lives, At-Home Nursing Care is now accepting Medicare as a form of payment for their at-home care services. Doing so, changes the whole perception of at-home care only being available to the very wealthy. At-Home Nursing Care is doing everything in their power to make sure people in their community can stay at home and receive the most comfortable care possible in the most difficult moments of their lives.

Rotarians Fighting Human Trafficking The Rotarians are collaborating with law enforcement agencies, elected officials and non-profit organizations assisting victims of human trafficking, composed of both sex trafficking and labor trafficking. Although human trafficking is often a hidden crime and accurate statistics are difficult to obtain, researchers estimate that more than 80% of trafficking victims are female. Over 50% of human trafficking victims are children. Human trafficking is “modern-day slavery and involves the use of force, fraud, or coercion to obtain some type of labor or commercial sex act,” according to the Department of Homeland Security. An estimated 400,000 people are believed to be trapped in modern slavery in the United States alone from forced labor to sex trafficking, according to the Global Slavery Index, published by the human rights group Walk Free Foundation. Rotarians from all over Los Angeles are pulling together resources in order to fight this horrific crime. They are working together to raise awareness, provide advocacy, and

To date, “Rob’s Swim to Help End Human Trafficking” has raised $10,167. Rob’s swim is just one example of the efforts from local rotarians to bring an end to human trafficking. real estate Team Crockett 310.641.3383 | ccrprop.com Team Crockett @ CCR Properties has a long lineage of property management and residential real estate in the LAX Coastal community. It all started in 1963 when Mary Lou Crocket joined the family firm of Otto Cripps Realty at their office on the south east corner of Sepulveda and La Tijera. In 1991 Mary Lou joined RE/Max with her mother Lorene and daughter Patty. These three generations of women have had a long standing impact on Westchester and its surrounding communities. Before passing away in 2004, Mary Lou was a City of Los Angeles airport commissioner, president of the Board of Airport Commissioners, president of the City of Los Angeles Library Commission, founder of the Westchester/Playa del Rey Historical Society, and more civic contributions. After moving around to different office locations in Westchester, Patty has brought the family business full circle and is back on Sepulveda and La Tijera Blvd. Just like their clients, they are on the move, but their hearts will always be to the community and people of Westchester.

TWE Solutions 888.535.9570 | twe-solutions.com At TWE Solutions, philanthropy is a requirement. When you’re working in the fast-paced, ever-evolving industry of technology, it’s tempting to stay focused only on business. Fortunately, the owners of this LAX Coastal-based team, President Michelle Kiely and CTO John Marcato, understand the bigger picture. Michelle and John know that the success of a community relies not only on running a thriving business but also on an altruistic populace. Leading by example, they join their team in multiple giveback efforts throughout the year. From donating to the spcaLA, cleaning the beach with Heal the Bay, coordinating fundraisers for Social Compassion in Legislation (SCIL), and volunteering at the Boys & Girls Club of Venice (fellow LAX Coastal Chamber member), TWE Solutions is always looking for an opportunity to help others, protect animals, and make the world a better place. And their support isn’t limited to TWE employees. Families, friends, clients, and neighbors are always encouraged to join in their philanthropic efforts—people just like YOU! To join TWE Solutions in making a difference, simply give them a call or stop by their Marina del Rey office. Already giving back to your community but looking for an IT solution from one of the best? TWE Solutions is committed to being the best-in-class provider for all of your IT needs.

transportation & aviation service LAX To Roll Out A Recovery Task Force As we all navigate a new normal because of the global pandemic, Los Angeles World Airports is ensuring travelers and employees stay safe. Our Recovery Task Force is helping us do more with less, a new reality we are all facing. Some of the ways we are providing a safe return to the airport include requiring face coverings, increased signage reminding the public how to stay safe and cleaning high-touch areas at least once an hour with hospital-grade cleaning products. LAX is also piloting new thermal screening technology in Tom Bradley International Terminal, which will help identify elevated body temperatures. Visit FlyLAX.com/TravelSafely for more information. We also continue to make progress on building the future of LAX. The LAX landscape looks vastly different from just a few months ago and we are excited to see our modernization take shape. Visit FlyLAX.com/ConnectingLAX to stay up-to-date on the progress.

If you build it...

Upcoming projects in the area

Westchester – Future home of the largest car rental facility in the world! Have you noticed an abundance of construction cranes in the Manchester Square area of the LAX Coastal Community? Well, that’s because LAX ConRAC Partners, a joint venture company led by LAX Coastal Chamber Corporate Partner, PCL Construction is building a 6.4 million square foot Consolidated Rent-A-Car (CONRAC) Facility structure that will have the capability of parking over 18,000 rental cars. The nearly $1 billion dollar construction project, slated to be completed in 2023, will be the terminus of the in-progress Automated People Mover (APM) Project that will connect passengers to the Central Terminal (CTA) at LAX. The CONRAC will also eliminate over 3,200 daily rental car shuttle trips into LAX. Intermodal Transportation Facility – West (IFT-West) at LAX to open in 2021 The old Lot C parking lot at LAX is being transformed into a unique mobile access hub for long term and short term parking, as well as meet and greet ride share space for those coming and going from LAX. The new IFT-West facility is designed to provide travelers a closer access point for LAX without having to go into the CTA. Swinerton Builders, LAX Coastal Chamber corporate partner is leading the design-build effort and is set for completion in 2021. State-of-the-Art Airport Police Facility In-Progress If you haven’t driven west on Westchester Parkway towards the Pacific Ocean, you likely would not be aware that a new 160,000 sq. ft. Airport Police Facility for Los Angeles International Airport is being built. The state-of-the-art facility set to be completed in 2021 is being designed by the LAX Coastal Chamber member, Skidmore, Owings, and Merrill (SOM) with general contractor, Hensel Phelps.

frontline workers The True 2020 Heroes When you search “hero” on Google, the first thing that comes up is its definition, “a person who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities.” In the last few months, we have seen thousands of hero’s across the country step up to the plate and carry the country on their backs, our frontline workers. Our grocery clerks, doctors and nurses, gas station attendants, street light operators, and many more did not have the option to work from home, but woke up every working day to support those in our community through a pandemic. Selflessness is one of the most honorable traits a human can have, and it is a trait shared by all the people who decided to put their masks on and get out to provide for the people in our communities. We praise the companies that gave bonuses to their essential employees, those who worked quickly to ensure higher safety standards in their workplace, and everyone who lives with or has a loved one that is an essential worker and supported them during these times. Now as places are beginning to open again, and we are beginning to see a little bit of light at the end of the tunnel, we can not thank those frontline workers enough for their courage, achievements, and noble qualities. If it weren’t for you, families

82 | www.laxcoastal.com

wouldn’t have food to eat, patients would not be able to be cared for, and so many people would be robbed of their essential items to survive. We all look up to you as leaders who rise when everything is falling around you, and being selfless in times of dire need. Thank you frontline workers for your contribution to society in the last few months, without you we wouldn’t have one. There are several things we can do today and in the future to support our frontline

workers. Next time you go out to eat, or order food from a restaurant, you can leave a bigger tip that will be going back to the restaurant employees. We can ensure the safety of those around us by keeping our facemasks on when around others, and continue to fight for our essential workers by advocating for fair policies and resources to our government officials. If you would like to donate to feed frontline workers, you can donate to Front Line Foods at frontlinefoods.org/los-angeles.
