He would go on to serve three different terms as president, totaling 33 years. During his presidency, the Brothers purchased the 612 Adams Street building, which was to house the College until 1940 when the College moved to its present location at Central Avenue and East Parkway South.

Christian Brothers University became co-educational in 1970; and, firmly committed to the ideals of free inquiry, pursuit of truth, and respect for all people, the academic community welcomes persons from diverse religious faiths and social backgrounds. Each contributes to our common enterprise and shares in the heritage of the Catholic tradition of the University in a blend of liberal education and preparation for professional careers and graduate study. Academic Regalia The following information is to help our guests identify the academic regalia seen in the Commencement Processional: Traditional academic regalia is evolved from the religious habits worn by faculty in ancient universities who were members of religious orders. The European custom of using academic robes came to this country in the 18th century, and American colleges and universities standardized the styles of academic regalia in 1895. The regalia you see today — with the various colors, trimmings, gown, hood, and cap — are the results of that standardization and symbolize both the degree being granted and its field of learning. There are three types of gowns and hoods: the Bachelor’s, the Master’s, and the Doctor’s. The distinctions between the three are explained below. GOWNS: Academic gowns are usually of black material, and their pattern varies with the degree held. The Bachelor’s gowns are relatively simple in design with a closed front and long, pointed, open sleeves. Master’s gowns may be worn open or closed and have extremely long, closed sleeves, the arm protruding through an open part halfway down the sleeve. The ends of the sleeves are square and are further characterized by an arc of a circle appearing near the bottom. The Doctor’s gown is also designed to be worn open or closed, with round, bellshaped sleeves. There are wide velvet panels of facings down the front and three velvet bars upon each sleeve. HOODS: The Master’s hood is similar, but longer with wider edging, and more of the lining can be seen. The Doctor’s hood is easily recognized by the width of the velvet, the wide panels at either side, and the full exposure of the lining. Hoods are also trimmed with the color that heralds the major field of learning. CAPS: A square mortarboard is the standard, approved headgear. The tassel, fastened to the middle point of the top of the cap, is black or the color appropriate to the subject; it may be gold if the holder has a Doctoral degree. Bachelor’s caps are worn with the tassels on the right front side before degrees are conferred and are shifted to the left side when the degrees are officially awarded and conferred at the close of the ceremony. Some Doctors have replaced the mortarboard with a soft velvet tam with a gold tassel. Following is a list of the hood and tassel colors that represent several categories of learning:

THE UNIVERSITY MACE During medieval times, the academic mace or scepter became a symbol of university officials. Originally a wooden staff or walking stick carried by the beadle, it was used to lead the faculty in official ceremonies and was prominently displayed as a reminder for order during classes. The Hippocratic Oath I swear to fulfill, to the best of my ability and judgment, this covenant: I will respect the hard-won scientific gains of those physicians and physician assistants in whose steps I walk, and gladly share such knowledge as is mine with those who are to follow. I will apply, for the benefit of the sick, all measures which are required, avoiding those twin traps of overtreatment and therapeutic nihilism. I will remember that there is art to medicine as well as science, and that warmth, sympathy, and understanding may outweigh the surgeon’s knife or the chemist’s drug. I will not be ashamed to say “I know not,” nor will I fail to call in my colleagues when the skills of another are needed for a patient’s recovery. I will respect the privacy of my patients, for their problems are not disclosed to me that the world may know. Most especially must I tread with care in matters of life and death. If it is given me to save a life, all thanks. But it may also be within my power to take a life; this awesome responsibility must be faced with great humbleness and awareness of my own frailty. I will remember that I do not treat a fever chart, a cancerous growth, but a sick human being, whose illness may affect the person’s family and economic stability. My responsibility includes these related problems, if I am to care adequately for the sick. I will prevent disease whenever I can, for prevention is preferable to cure. I will remember that I remain a member of society, with special obligations to all my fellow human beings, those sound of mind and body as well as the infirm. If I do not violate this oath, may I enjoy life and art, respected while I live and remembered with affection thereafter. May I always act so as to preserve the finest traditions of my calling and may I long experience the joy of healing those who seek my help.

The National Anthem The Star Spangled Banner by Francis Scott Key Oh, say can you see by the dawn's early light What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming? Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight, O'er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming? And the rocket's red glare, the bombs bursting in air, Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there. Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

St. John Baptist de La Salle, Pray for us. Live Jesus in our hearts, Forever.
