CREATE A DEGREE TO MEET YOUR GOALS Although many of our concentrations involve interdisciplinary study, some students want to further customize their education by designing their own cross-departmental degree to meet a uniquely personal goal. Perhaps you want to pursue a specific area of research or a combination of disciplines not covered by our current offerings. CBU allows you to take an active role in your education and develop a different approach

to answering questions, solving problems, and addressing contemporary social issues from multiple perspectives. Most CBU students choose to stay within a traditional major, but Sam said he didn’t quite feel “fulfilled.” While researching options for double majors, minors, or other interesting classes to fit into his schedule, Sam discovered the Interdisciplinary Studies major.

I know that someday I’d like to work for a major sports franchise. But, I need a lot of knowledge and experience before I get there. My degree in Interdisciplinary Studies gives me the business courses I need, and my internship at Vanderbilt University Athletics gave me some hands-on experience. But other classes in subjects like psychology, sociology, and communication will help me figure out how people think and act - valuable insight I’ll be able to use in my future career.” —SAM, ’18

INTERDISCIPLINARY STUDIES (B.S. OR B.A.)

When your interests, strengths, and career goals don’t fit within one degree program, our Interdisciplinary Studies Program allows you to create a unique study plan that combines courses from multiple areas of study into one degree. CBU gives you the freedom to create your own degree.

BECOME AN EXPERT At CBU, you’ll take what you learn in the classroom and apply it to real-world problems through internships, research projects, and numerous hands-on learning opportunities. You’ll work alongside practitioners in your field, building valuable knowledge and skills – as well as your resume. Memphis is the city in which to build your future.

My lichen research started as an independent study with a faculty member, and it led to a summer internship with the Overton Park Conservancy. Not only have I really enjoyed it, but it has turned into a field of study that I am interested in pursuing after graduation. I have had some amazing experiences I would not have had otherwise because of these research opportunities.” —HANNAH, ‘18

At CBU, any student who wants an internship is guaranteed that opportunity.

NETWORKING AND RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES Close student-faculty interaction engenders life-long relationships that benefit you far into the future. For example, CBU professors will help you secure quality letters of recommendation necessary to apply to graduate or professional school. Plus, the small class sizes mean there is more opportunity for high-level research – even as an undergraduate. Working in labs throughout Memphis, our students are building relationships with potential future employers and professional contacts which will benefit their future career. And, you’ll make career and networking connections with successful leaders through CBU’s powerful alumni network.

MAKE YOURSELF AT HOME

The ins and outs of where you’ll live, learn, and eat. We talk a lot about community on campus. Making people feel welcome and at home on campus is one of our five core values, which means that CBU is a community where people care about each other and treat each other with respect in the classroom, on the playing field, and everywhere they are living, learning, and working together every day.

CAMPUS SERVICES

RESIDENCE HALLS

Here in the middle of bustling Midtown Memphis, our campus is a safe, comfortable, and close-knit community. We’re a lot like a small town in a big city. With multiple dining options, a bookstore (that also sells clothing and snacks), a post office, a print shop, a library, and our very own campus police force, there's plenty to offer all who step foot onto campus. Learn more at cbu.edu/student-services.

When you live on campus, you’ll get involved – all our residents do. Right outside the door of your dorm or apartment, the opportunities to participate, meet others, and make friends are endless. From traditional dormitory-style buildings to more spacious apartmentstyle living, this is your home away from home. Learn more about the options available at cbu.edu/campus-housing.

DINING OPTIONS CBU offers a delicious variety of on-campus dining options. Our menus are created by experienced chefs who have a passion for food, serving freshly prepared and culturally diverse meals across three dining locations.

Alfonso Dining Hall offers café entrées and side dishes, a grill line, soup and salad bar, deli, pizza bar, and dessert bar in a newly re-decorated, all-you-caneat cafeteria setting.

Buccaneer Grill serves up burgers and grilled sandwiches, deli sandwiches, salads, sushi, snacks, and sweets in a casual atmosphere. The Buc is open all day, featuring booths, barstools, and outdoor seating.

Canale Café proudly brews Starbucks coffee and offers a variety of sandwiches, salads, grilled items, pastries, Tazo teas, and fruit smoothies – complete with Wi-Fi and a quiet, informal vibe. Plus, there is outside seating with electrical outlets powered by solar cells!

REASONS TO LIVE ON CAMPUS

No commute. Why drive when you can walk?

Sleep late and go to class in your pajamas.

Connections. Build friendships over early-morning coffee runs and late-night study sessions.

Enjoy greater opportunities to interact with faculty and staff, and feel more connected to your educational experience.

Can you say all-inclusive? Living on campus is sort of like a cruise ship – your room, utilities, cable and internet are included!

Build your resume by participating in clubs, organizations, and intramurals.

LIVING LEARNING COMMUNITIES Living Learning Communities bring together students of similar interests, encouraging learning outside the classroom. Within each LLC, students who share common academic interests live together on one dorm floor, take core classes together, and engage in fun activities relevant to their interests, both on campus and in Memphis. To see a list of LLCs and learn more, visit cbu.edu/llc.

Eat meals – without cooking or cleaning up!

MEET YOUR NEIGHBORS

Maybe it’s the Blues City vibe, or the fact that the entire city doubles as your classroom – but once you visit Memphis, you might want to stay awhile.

It’s a city built around good food, friendly people, and a whole lot of soul. When you live in the home of FedEx and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, you’ll have access to real-world opportunities at Fortune 500 companies, nonprofit programs, art galleries, and research labs. There are weekends where you may want to give back to the community through service projects and outreach. And when you’re just looking for fun, Memphis – the home of the Blues and some of the world’s best barbecue – has a lot to offer.

DISCOVER ’ CBU S VALUES

Explore Our Lasallian Tradition of Service

Within our community, we also respect the Lasallian tradition on which our school was built – but you don’t need to be Catholic to benefit from a CBU education. Our five core values guide our own interactions as we strive to enrich each student’s cultural, intellectual, physical, social, and spiritual development.

Faith in the presence of God. CBU nurtures belief in the living presence of God in our world, calling you to a deeper awareness of your own relationship with a caring and loving God. Concern for the poor and social justice. A core principle of Christian Brothers University is expressed through the Lasallian ideal: “Enter to Learn, Leave to Serve.” As a CBU student, you are taught to be aware of the poor and victims of injustice, and are afforded countless opportunities to respond to their needs, including September of Service, where students perform 30 days of good deeds to serve the Memphis community. Respect for all persons. CBU engages in a concerted effort to respect you, and the dignity of every person, through relationships that acknowledge each other’s identity as children of God. Quality education. CBU offers the opportunity to advance your abilities and use your talents to critically examine the world in light of the message of the Gospels, taking greater responsibility for your own education. You will be prepared for college, your career, and life. Inclusive community. We encourage a united community where diversity is respected, where no one is left out, and where everyone finds a place. Your strengths and your limitations will be recognized and accepted within Our Lasallian Family.
