A Message from the Dean Dear Cathedral Family, Summer begins and our lives take on a new rhythm as the days lengthen and the temperatures become ever warmer. For many of us this is a season of vacation from our normal routines. For some of us, summer is a transition time—from one grade to another in school, from school to college, from college to graduate or professional school or to work, from one place or job to another. Our life together here at Christ Church Cathedral also takes on a different rhythm in the summertime as Sunday School and mid-week services go on hiatus. Summer is also a time of transition for us: one program year draws to a close, and we turn our thoughts and imaginations to preparing for new programs to begin at the end of the summer. This summer we will welcome two new staff members who will join us in time to be part of our planning for the next program year. Summertime will be our season for getting to know one another and settling in to new spaces and new jobs. Adam King, our interim organist/ choirmaster, will arrive first; his first Sunday on the bench will be June 8, the Day of Pentecost. Adam has previously been with us here as a supply organist during his time at the University of Mobile, where he earned a B.A. in music performance and served as an adjunct instructor of music. He earned his Master of Music degree from Samford University and has served on church staffs and as a substitute musician in Baptist, Methodist, Presbyterian, Roman Catholic, and Episcopal churches. Adam has worked with children’s and handbell choirs, as well as

adult and community choral groups, and he has also worked as an accompanist and arranger and has been involved with community arts programs, especially including community theatre. I am thankful that Adam has agreed to assume responsibility for working with me in planning worship and musical programs, as well as leading our choirs and generally helping us begin the work of transitioning our musical life into the next places God is calling us. Dan Wagner, our new assistant to the Dean and Rector, will arrive as a newly ordained transitional deacon at the end of June, with his first Sunday on the altar being July 6. Dan is a South Carolina native, a graduate of Newberry College and the College of Charleston, from which he earned a Master of Public Administration. He served the people of Charleston and Greenville, South Carolina in that capacity prior to receiving his call to the Episcopal priesthood. Dan received his Master of Divinity degree from The School of Theology at the University of the South in May, and, God willing, he will be ordained to the priesthood at the end of this year. I know that you will both welcome and support Dan and Adam as they begin their new ministries here with us and as we begin this new stage in our life together as the Cathedral family. Please keep them in your prayers as they travel and move during the month of June. I pray for a safe and refreshing and restorative summer for us all Faithfully,

The Very Reverend Beverly F. Gibson, Ph.D., Dean

E P I S C O PA L C H U R C H W O M E N We have just completed our 5th year with our new Episcopal Church Women (ECW) format of having the group led by a chair who has moved up from co-chair making ECW leadership a two year commitment. This year we have been under the able leadership of Chair Erica McElhaney and Co-Chair Julie McClelland. Thank you to both for a great year. Joining Julie for 2014-15 will be Lucy Brady. The areas include Sunday, Hospitality Teams, Lenten and Advent Luncheon Teams, Special Services Team to assist with funerals, ordinations, Diocesan events, etc., and our outreach projects, United Thank Offering, sale of Arpilleras, Loaves and Fish, etc. Julie and Lucy will begin this summer planning for next year. P EGGY LYDEN F AREWELL R ECEPTION Dear Christ Church Cathedral Family, How can I begin to thank you all for the gorgeous antique silver and crystal vase, the Missy Patrick print of the church, the beautiful resolution, the gorgeous flowers and the lovely day!? I will hang the print in my office and think of you all always. The vase is sitting on my piano at home and I will cherish it always. The last thirteen years has been the highlight of my life. I thank each of you for every moment. I will not be far and you will be in my heart always. Much love, Peggy

O p e r a t i o n Ba c k p a c k 2 0 1 4 Christ Church Cathedral volunteers will again assist Sergeant Zandra Jackson and the members of the Mobile Police Department Family Intervention Team (FIT) in providing backpacks, school supplies, uniforms, and gift certificates for children in their program. We are looking for youth leaders to head this project. It is an excellent opportunity for high school students to complete their service hours, while getting to know some our younger members. Please call the Cathedral Office if you would like to help.

Operation Backpack 2013 recipients.

We will get the “wishes tree” up by mid-June. Items will include backpacks, supply lists, calculators, and requests for cash donations. The project will run from mid-June through Sunday, July 20. The deadline for all collections is Monday, July 21 so that we will have time to sort everything. The officers will give the children their stuffed backpacks and take them shopping on Friday, August 1 during the tax-free days. To chose a student you will have to wait for the “wishes tree,” but if you would like to make a cash contribution now, you may send checks made payable to Christ Church Cathedral and note “Operation Backpack” on the memo line.

Beckwith Summer Camp 2014 Beckwith Summer Camp sessions for youth offer faith -based adventure activities combined with Christian programs developed for spiritual formation. They provide opportunity for water activities on Weeks Bay; kayaking, canoeing, paddle boarding, sailing, and swimming. They engage campers in field and court games; boche ball, ultimate Frisbee, soccer, kick-ball, basketball, volleyball and dodge ball. They have a rock climbing wall, nature trail for light hiking, and challenge course with high and low ropes elements. They work with priests across the Diocese to provide Christ-centered programs and a contemporary style of praise and worship. The strong spiritual component of each session is led by a priest from within our Episcopal Diocese, we refer to this person as the Camp Dean. Beckwith is owned and operated by the Episcopal Diocese of the Central Gulf Coast.

Co r r e s p o n d e n c e Dear Friends. I want to thank everyone at Christ Church Cathedral for your very generous gift to Wilmer Hall for our annual Pancake Breakfast. We had a wonderful day and the rain held off for us! Our renovation to Carpenter Hall and Quigley Hall is progressing nicely and we hope to move in by mid June. These buildings will be used for the expansion of our Transitional Living and Transitional Family Programs. As we celebrate 150 years of this special ministry during 2014, I am reminded that it is through the generosity of people like all of you that have allowed us to sustain our mission of caring for children in need for so many years. Your continued generosity and the support enable us to provide a warm, loving and nurturing home for children and young adults who are victims of poverty, abuse, neglect and homelessness. Your support is making a difference in the lives of these young people every day. Many thanks to all of you! Sincerely, Sally Green Executive Director, Wilmer Hall Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Thank you so very much for your financial gift of $300 since November 2013. Your generosity made it possible for us to meet the needs of many clients who are struggling financially to support their families. We appreciate your affirmation of our work in the community! For months we have seen an increase in the number of families turning to us for help. Many are struggling to provide the basic necessities for their families every day. Your gift helps to make it possible for us to help them through a financial crisis by providing assistance with food, medicine, gasoline, bus pass or assistance with an over due utility bill. Each year we see over 7,000 households comprised of more than 17,000 individual family members. Over 90% or those served are not Catholic. Without your support, we would have to turn them away! Thank you for partnering with us and supporting our efforts to assist our client in moving toward selfsufficiency. Know that your generosity touches the lives of many who would otherwise do without. We pray that God will bless you with the graces you desire. With a grateful heart, Carol P. Wagnon Service Center Director Catholic Social Service

Dear Dean Gibson, Thank you for Christ Church Cathedral’s generous contribution of $1,464.40 to Episcopal Relief & Development. Your commitment to fighting poverty and disease is essential as we continue our work in support of the Millennium Development Goals and communities around the globe. Your gift was applied to the Clean Water per family program area. Faithfully, Robert W. Radtke President Dear Friends, Thank you for your generous gift of $100.00 to the Lilian Vallely School. All of us are grateful for your support of the school. We have three groups coming this summer to do summer school and to work on campus projects. Some Boise State science students are coming in June to do science experiments with the kids. In July, a group from St. Barnabas On the Desert in Scottsdale, Arizona will be there followed by a team from Christ Church Cathedral in Indianapolis. We learned how to do these summer programs from our mutual friend, The Very Rev. Johnny Cook, when he brought a team to the school from Dallas many years ago. They were fabulous! The students love these groups that come to be with them and eagerly board the vans in the mornings when summer school is schedule. Summer school is a big help in retaining skills over the summer. Faithfully, Jan Thornton Director of Communications Thank you for the most informative tour of your church. We all learned so much about the windows and the Mobile members who truly love this beautiful church. Thanks again for sharing with the First United Methodist Church of Lucedale. May God bless you and your church in the future. ~First United Methodist Church of Lucedale, Mississippi

A ng l i c a n – R o m a n C a t h o l i c D i a l o g u e Dialogue examines Catholic, Anglican ecclesiology and moral discernment agreed statement The Anglican-Roman Catholic Theological Consultation in the U.S.A. (ARC-USA) has released a keynote document, Ecclesiology and Moral Discernment: Seeking a Unified Moral Witness. Ecclesiology and Moral Discernment: Seeking a Unified Moral Witness was approved at the ARCUSA meeting February 24-25 at Virginia Theological Seminary in Alexandria, VA. The meeting was chaired by Bishop Bauerschmidt; the Roman Catholic cochairman, Bishop Ronald Herzog of Alexandria, Louisiana, was unable to attend for health reasons. ARC-USA prepared the document with a preface signed by co-chair the Rt. Rev. John C. Bauerschmidt, Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Tennessee, and the Most Rev. Denis Madden, Auxiliary Bishop of Baltimore and Chairman of the Bishops’ Committee for Ecumenical and Interreligious Affairs of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. “ARC-USA has produced some important statements in the past,” commented Bishop Bauerschmidt. “This statement represents the latest landmark in our journey together as churches, and is a valuable contribution to an important topic.’ As stated in the preface: “For almost fifty years, since 1965, the Episcopal Church and the Roman Catholic Church have been engaged in an official bilateral dialogue sponsored by the two churches, the AnglicanRoman Catholic Theological Consultation in the United States of America, sometimes known as ARCUSA. As a part of this dialogue, ARC-USA has produced a number of statements and reports on important theological subjects of concern to the two churches, often building on and responding to the work of the Anglican-Roman Catholic International Commission (ARCIC) established in 1967. Our own statement takes its place in this succession.” The document is the result of five years of dialogue and research, following the 2008 request by Episcopal Church Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori and

the Bishops’ Committee for Ecumenical and Interreligious Affairs of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops “to address questions of ethics and the Christian life in the context of ecclesiology, in an effort to achieve greater clarity regarding areas of agreement and disagreement.” The statement reflects the way the two churches pursue the work of teaching and learning within the Christian moral life, as well as where each church derives its authority. It poses the question of whether differences in moral theology create further division between the churches. In addressing this topic, discussions centered on the teaching charism of each church and the pedagogy of moral formation. With a focus on immigration/migration and same-sex relations, the document’s contents include: Seeking the Good Together; Necessary Characteristics of Our Common Moral Tradition; A Difference in Ecclesiology; and Case Studies in Migration/ Immigration and Same-Sex Relations. The conclusion is called On the Way to Unified Moral Witness. Copies of the final report are available from the Cathedral office in hard copy or via email.
