ith all the fun of the festive period well and truly over and the time off from work just a distant memory, now, more than ever, you may be dreaming of escaping the day-today slog to somewhere gorgeous. This month Inex looks at two very different, but equally beautifully designed getaways. The first is the Vipp shelter on page 32. This all-inclusive refuge is equipped with everything from a kitchen to lighting and is the perfect forest hideaway. The Vipp shelter is born from the same function principles as the Vipp bin, the product that the company is famous for, and is a tool to escape to nature. The second is the Red Mountain Resort Hotel. Captured by the mystique and mystery of the Icelandic landscape, where, according to local mythology, ‘invisible people’ and ‘half-men, half-trolls’ are believed to roam, Johannes Torpe Studios has designed a place of unparalleled harmony. Situated on the western peninsula of Snæfellsness, at the point where the river mouth runs out to the sea, the resort faces Snæfellsjökull, a majestic glacier-covered stratovolcano and will offer guests a sensory escape into the solitude and seclusion of the breathtaking Icelandic nature. Turn to page 54 to explore the proposal for the truly magical spa and wellness centre. I hope you enjoy this edition. Don’t forget, you can also access all of Inex’s features and product inspiration at your fingertips via the magazine’s state-of-the-art app. To download your version free of charge, simply search ‘Inexonline’ on the App Store or Google play.

Unique felt rugs from the mountains of heaven

Here: Made outdoors by the tribal women, each rug takes a master cutter and her team of makers between 10 and 20 days to complete Right: The applied shapes are vocabulary from the ancient language which still forms part of the everyday life of the rug makers

For over two and a half thousand years, the nomadic peoples of the remote Tien Shan mountains in Kyrgyzstan have created their dazzling felt rugs.

K

nown as Shyrdaks, these wool rugs have a tough flattened felt base handsewn with geometric surface patterns in coloured felts. Motifs are chosen to bestow blessings, describe a scene or tell a story of life in the mountains of heaven. Felt is the first company to import these vibrant works of art direct from their makers in Kyrgyzstan to Britain. Tim Moock of Felt bought his first Shyrdaks while visiting Kyrgyzstan in 1996. He has set up a fair trade agreement with the nomadic people, bringing their wonderfully hardwearing rugs from the Tien Shan peaks to sit happily in Britain’s town and country houses. Shyrdaks are as practical as they are decorative and their story has both romance and a touch of danger. Made outdoors by the tribal women, each rug takes a master cutter and her team of makers between 10 and 20 days to complete. Each rug is made from raw wool which has been flattened with boiling water, rolled up in a reed mat and then ‘felted’ by being dragged across mountain pastures behind a galloping horse. The surface felts are coloured, traditionally with natural dyes made from roots and fruits, and then used to create geometric patterns which are bound to the base with strong stitching. The applied shapes are vocabulary from the ancient language which still forms part of the everyday life of the rug makers. Each of Felt’s Shyrdaks tells a unique story and Felt’s customers can also commission bespoke rugs in their chosen colours, patterns and sizes. Shyrdak colours range from the dazzlingly bright to subtly muted tones, offering a wide range of decorative possibilities for both contemporary and traditional interiors. feltrugs.co.uk «

Go with the Color Flow Color Flow is a cabinet with a lenticular surface that can change its colour depending on your position and movement.

T

his visual change reminds the viewer about the relationship between the object and the user. We spend a lot of time with diverse objects around us in daily life. During that time, many activities happen, but we rarely know that. Colour is one of the most immediate characteristics of visual perception. So design studio Orijeen thought changing colour was the most effective and dramatic way that people recognise the interaction between the user and furniture through the lenticular process. By changing its colour depending on the user’s position and movement, she or he is able to immediately realise the connection between them. Orijeen hopes that this recognition might help people more actively and joyfully experience the objects and communicate with them. orijeen.com

he project derived from the Campana’s daily lives, such as Humberto’s early morning runs throughout São Paulo’s parks, as well as the idea of nature weaving through urban fabric and our own imagination. The brothers meld the personal with the formal and assemble ideas, materials, methods of making, shapes and texture. Humberto Campana explains: “We are playing much more with sculpture than with functionality. We manifest a dialogue between designer, artist and sculptor. Fernando and I try to jump into the assemblage process unconsciously, allowing us a freedom and immediacy that goes beyond our practice to date.” This project is an evolutionary culmination of the famed São Paulo studio practice of the past decade. The studio has experienced a multidisciplinary explosion in research of materials, means of production, collaborations with artisans within regions of Brazil and craftsmen across the world. At a time of cultural and political upheaval in Brazil, the studio continues to lead the cutting-edge of design and collaboration with local and historical centres of craftsmanship in South America. campanas.com.br « INEX-ONLINE.COM

29 KITCHENS

Beauty on a budget Interior designers working with clients who want a dream kitchen have a fabulous option at their fingertips, if they recognise that buying brand-new isn’t the only way to realise a design brief.

I

ncreasingly, interior designers are creating a little magic, and allowing budgets to box above their weight, by utilising the services of The Used Kitchen Company. Over the past 12 years, this innovative company has listed over 5000 ex-display and used kitchens, at 50 to 70% off their RRP. It has also recycled around 10,000 tonnes of wood, granite, quartz, glass and other materials, which would otherwise have ended up in landfill. For this reason, it was named as one of Kevin McCloud’s ‘Green Heroes’ at Grand Designs Live 2017, but it has long been a superstar in the eyes of interior design professionals wishing to exceed their clients’ expectations.

The kitchens listed by The Used Kitchen Company range in price, giving designers lots of scope and inspiration. Brand names regularly listed include Chalon, Bulthaup, Boffi, Mark Wilkinson and Siematic, but there are usually up to 40 different manufacturers to choose from. Kitchens come in a wide variety of colours and finishes, allowing flexibility for the designer. Once sold, the kitchens are dismantled by an

expert team and taken to their new home for fitting. Often, previous owners include the appliances within the sale, creating a full working kitchen. However, if they don’t, on the whole, appliance housing units are a standard size, enabling most models of kitchen appliance to fit the space. The key for the interior designer is to not be limited in vision and to know which type of kitchen might suit a certain mood or design style. INEX-ONLINE.COM

30 KITCHENS

For instance, the smooth lines and elegance of Italian kitchens, coupled with their typically large work surfaces and effective use of cupboard space, support the philosophy of minimalism. Many German brands have a timeless quality about them, whilst some bespoke painted kitchens are ideal for those creating a rural, farmhouse feel within a property. Designers also need to be open to the idea that kitchens don’t necessarily have to be installed in the same configuration in their new home. Worktops can be cut, to suit a new space and, if more units are required, it is usually pretty easy to purchase these, if the kitchen has recently left a showroom. The imagination can also run riot when it comes to worktops. These can easily be replaced, if the kitchen units fit the specification of the brief, but a different material or colour is required for the work surfaces. A designer could always decide to upgrade a kitchen, by swapping laminate for stone, or they could opt to create a completely different feel by fitting stainless steel worktops. INEX-ONLINE.COM

Many of the bespoke kitchens can be painted after purchase, which really make them look new. Others can be accessorised with colourful backsplashes, the most on-trend of these at the moment being coloured glass. Bar stools, chairs, tables and even large fruit bowls and vases can all add a hue and give a kitchen a completely new personality. Restaurants Lighting is also a superb ally and a designer can add value here, by installing task lighting around work areas, or sensor-operated lighting that illuminates with a wave of the hand – very useful when the chef is mid-task and not able to flick a switch. Kitchens with islands are often some of the quickest to find a lovely second home. An island can fulfil different functions within a design brief, perhaps being an area for food preparation and incorporating sink, dishwasher and storage areas, or becoming a zone for relaxing and entertaining, or even a wine store!

Where they are situated within the kitchen can change the entire movement flow, so designers have many possibilities when using islands, whether they wish to create divisions between cooking and living areas within an open-plan interior, or divert traffic away from key cooking hotspots. Once installed in a new home, a used island can again be transformed. Pendant lighting can make a huge visual statement and make the island a highlight, whilst wooden islands can again be painted, to suit the decor. Mood lighting can quickly position an island as a place for relaxation, whilst lights added to the plinth beneath the island, or its base units, can create the illusion of an island afloat, to add a wow factor. theusedkitchencompany.com ÂŤ

44 PAINT & FINISHES

Designing for personality with Voice of Colour Following its success in North America, the Voice of Colour palette brings the latest colour trends, and Colour of the Year – Black Flame – to Johnstone’s Trade paint coatings and its UK customers. We recently spoke to Donna Taylor, Principal Colour Consultant for Voice of Colour, about what the new colour palette and 2018 trends guide, Corelation, bring to designers and architects on this side of the pond.

C

olour means different things to different people around the world, however, the way it impacts our everyday lives is unquestionable. From our earliest days, colour helps to shape the way we understand and interpret the world, and plays a unique role in helping to create memories and even trigger our emotions. INEX-ONLINE.COM

For this reason, colour is one of the most powerful tools a designer has at their disposal. When used as part of a holistic design, colour can help create a wider story that represents the personality and individualism of a space and the people who occupy it.

Voice of Colour’s 2018 trends guide, Corelation, builds on this understanding. It helps designers produce interior spaces that resonate with their clients’ unique personalities, while also offering guidance on the use of colour within a wider design concept. Featuring four key colour themes and stories, the 2018 collection allows designers to align their clients’ personality and desires with a theme that suits their mindsets. It’s about finding the right moods, objects and items that help identify individuality, and then creating themes around that inspiration. Personality themes Corelation offers four primary colour stories that people can identify with. The Retreater theme addresses people’s growing need to regularly withdraw from the pressures, chaos and overstimulation that so often come with daily life. Light, airy tones that help achieve calm, balance and peace feature in this colour collection.

45 PAINT & FINISHES

Opposite: Voice of Colour’s 2018 trends guide, Corelation, helps designers produce interior spaces that resonate with their clients’ unique personalities Left: Black Flame is the anchor colour throughout the Corelation trends guide, offering a versatile and contemporary shade across all four themes

The Dream Weaver colour palette resonates with those who embody a perpetual ability to shine, live a free-spirited lifestyle and find creativity under any circumstance. Muted and ethereal brights are complemented with earth-based tones in this collection. Meanwhile, the Commoner colour palette connects to those who are attracted to popular minimalist Nordic-inspired designs, which emphasise going back to basics. This palette aims to express diversity and an eclectic approach to living, expect colours that are muted, with vague tints to colours of the rainbow such as jewel tones. Finally, the Brave colour story reflects a new design mentality that mimics the growing yearning for protection, strength and stability to feel safe during uncertain times. The deep, rich, luxurious colours that make up this substantial palette will be certain to turn heads in any space. Underpinning these four themes is Voice of Colour’s 2018 Colour of the Year, Black Flame. Blending

two classic hues, black and indigo, the statement-making colour evokes privacy, hope and classic modernism. Black creates the silence we crave in an informationheavy world, while the indigo offers possibility and a deep hopefulness. Black Flame is the anchor colour throughout the Corelation trends guide, offering a versatile and contemporary shade across all four themes. Bringing the themes to life Traditionally, when choosing colours, designers might use a fan deck of over a thousand different shades to pinpoint a particular colour or collection of colours that complement a wider design scheme. The Corelation trends guide complements Voice of Colour’s wider colour palette by offering a more cohesive guide through the design journey. Using one of the four themes, designers can develop a holistic scheme where every part of their design – from colour to materials – truly resonates with the client’s personality.

For example, a creative agency with a new office space might identify with the Dream Weaver – an artful, playful and creative story which influences designs that pop like its personality. Taking inspiration from this, the designer can use the Corelation guide to develop an interior space that draws on this theme. Bold, rainbow palettes express a hedonistic, care-free spirit while the sparing use of speciality materials like marble or chrome offer a point of focus and draws attention. Alternatively, a space could be influenced by its surroundings. For example, a remote boutique hotel or coastal home might align itself more closely with the Retreater theme. Inspired by a wish for reprieve from everyday noise, this story offers a sense of escapism and solitude through nature-inspired designs, organic materials and pared-down aesthetics. Layering organic materials, patterns and objects with calming, neutral and warm hues will act as accents to draw the eye in an otherwise subdued theme. Building the themes The Corelation trends guide has been inspired by the collaboration of over 20 Voice of Colour stylists from around the world, including representatives from a number of industries such as consumer electronics, architecture, automotive and aerospace. These experts come together to study user insights and building materials and decor trends. In doing so, they’re able to gain a perspective on where design preferences are heading, and subsequently use this to create the four colour themes that reflect current attitudes. Individuality is one of the most fundamental components in good design. Traditionally, personality was more frequently expressed in domestic spaces – with white walls and easy maintenance typically winning over in commercial, healthcare and even retail spaces. However, we’re seeing an influx of consumer and domestic style transcend design across the board. From office to home, design today reflects a heightened focus on wellbeing and individuality, and colour is key to this – helping to create an experience or inspire a certain mood. This belief is at the very core of Voice of Colour and the 2018 Corelation trends guide, offering designers an easier way to reflect their clients’ unique personalities in the spaces in which they live, work and play. voiceofcolour.com « INEX-ONLINE.COM

The Red Mountain Resort Hotel Captured by the mystique and mystery of the Icelandic landscape, where, according to local mythology, ‘invisible people’ and ‘half-men, half-trolls’ are believed to roam, Johannes Torpe Studios has designed a place of unparalleled harmony. The Red Mountain Resort is a proposal for a spa and wellness retreat that offers guests a sensory escape into the solitude and seclusion of the breathtaking Icelandic nature; a place that is earthly and other-worldly at the same time.

ituated on the western peninsula of Snæfellsness, at the point where the river mouth runs out to the sea, the resort faces Snæfellsjökull, a majestic glacier-covered stratovolcano. The mountain is home to the Icelandic saga about Bárður Snæfellsás, who is said to have left the chaotic world of men behind to live in solitude inside the glacier. His transformation is the inspiration for the overall concept of the Red Mountain Resort. As an interpretation of the Icelandic saga, the studio has created a poetic journey that possesses a parallel between the inner emotional journey of the guest and the outer experience of the nature. The saga of Bárður Snæfellsás In the Icelandic saga of Bárður Snæfellsás, the half-man, half-troll, Bárður is one of the first settlers on the peninsula and he and his family gave name to many of the area’s landmarks. His life story is the primary inspiration to the spa journey of the Red Mountain Resort. The transformational spa journey takes the guests through five emotional states: contemplation, exposure, confrontation, clarity and enlightenment. Off the beaten track Stunning mountain and volcano views and vast grassy wetlands flowing with winding rivers lead visitors to the resort. Subtly camouflaged within the landscape, the building seems to magically appear just as they arrive. “We wanted to create the illusion that one is entering another world when they arrive at the resort. It is a world that awakens and stimulates your senses in ways everyday life doesn’t have the capacity to do,” says Johannes Torpe. Transformation and exposure to nature The resort is designed to invite guests on a journey of self-discovery, just like that of Bárður Snæfellsás. The journey is facilitated by an architectural concept that explores the interplay between nature and architecture, and their combined capacity to provide the necessary triggers for an inward journey. The architecture is designed so as to expose the guest to nature in various ways, whilst maintaining a sense of protection and basic principles of shelter. Numerous panoramic views remind guests of nature’s presence; her power and her fragility, her hostility and her warmth. Sky courtyards enclosed by glass panels invite the rocky landscape inside, while the lagoon literally flows through the reception, blurring the line between outside and inside. Impermanence, movement and constant change are key words and the idea is to invite the guests to become a part of a natural transformative process. The building itself additionally undergoes its own kind of metamorphosis through its exposure to the elements, becoming visible over time through the patina of the materials. The spa experience The spa is the heart of the resort and the centre of the transformational journey. Key emotional states experienced by Bárðar on his transformational journey are instilled into the space and, as guests engage with the different functions of the spa, are experienced through various expressions of nature. The element of steam is a motif in the spa that symbolises the fog that arises in the saga every time Bárðar experiences an emotional change. Other natural elements are further captured to create wind tunnels, fire baths and ice pools that represent the unpredictable extremes of Icelandic weather. The resort’s outdoor lagoon is designed to look and feel like a natural extension to the nearby river. It is outlined with shallow passages, areas with currents and stillwater pools. The further one moves through the lagoon the more one is rewarded with solitude and the opportunity to become totally immersed in nature. INEX-ONLINE.COM

Traditional construction techniques turned inside-out The architecture is designed with close consideration to the site and local resources. “We wanted to create a building that has the potential to encapsulate a sense of timelessness through the utilisation of historical construction techniques and the incorporation of elements from the landscape of which it is built,” Kit Sand Ottsen explains. The studio explored the tradition of Icelandic turf houses built by the first Norwegian settlers, experimenting with ways of creating a modern interpretation. The emerging idea was to turn the construction inside-out. Turf houses are wooden structures insulated by a thick wall of turf – in other words, a light structure with a very heavy base. The studio inverted this structure by creating a heavy concrete structure enclosed by a light base of glass. As a natural extension, the relationship between positive and negative space has been explored, and throughout the building there is a clear contrast between lightweight and more heavy building volumes. The building itself is an industrial interpretation of the rocky landscape with heavy geometric shapes shooting up from the ground like sculptural rock formations and tall steam chimneys that are an architectural take on geysers. Modern camouflage Concrete is chosen as the primary material and is treated with a red pigment that mimics the hue of the surrounding landscape. The concrete is applied to create layers of contrasting rough and smooth textures and form patterns inspired by those found in the layers of the turf houses. Selected parts of the rooftops are covered with grass like the traditional building techniques of the area. This both intensifies the notion of a building that is closely related to the history of the site, and adds to the sense of a hidden destination that discreetly rises from the landscape. Drawing from the rich heritage of Icelandic folktales, a sense of surrealism and the concept of imaginary realms is additionally infused into the space. The use of reflecting glass on the building’s exterior creates a mirror-effect, evoking the illusion of a building that disappears into the landscape. Portals and tunnels are additionally dispersed throughout the building to enhance this other-worldly and magical atmosphere. johannestorpe.com «
