EDITOR'S LETTER

Do YoPue o p l e ? Se e

Time and time again we hear of stories, old wives tales, your grandmother?s tales, and then we hear of the word, parable. What?s interesting, although the word parable means story, there?s something a bit more special about this word. You see, a parable is an earthly story with a heavenly meaning, told by Jesus himself. Although the Bible, [which still stands as the most popular book in the world] was and is the word of God, was written by those who God appointed. Yet, parables contain the exact words spoken by Jesus while on Earth. Now that I have your attention, I?ll give you another interesting fact: the parables are concealed or revealed. Simply put: those who believe will understand the heavenly meaning, while those who continue to stand on the fence will continue to scratch their heads with a disagreeable attitude. And just like any good story, the parables make you think. Here at Chispa we pride ourselves in thinking outside the box; but no one or nothing stands close to the supernatural effect a parable provides. Debbie Windham, teacher, speaker, and counselor helped open my eyes in order for me to understand a specific parable: The parable of the two debtors found in Luke 7:36-50. Why would Jesus explain to Simon, the Pharisee exactly what the woman had done when he himself was present to see exactly what she was doing? In those times, it was custom for a host to provide a kiss of peace onto their guest; because their guests had to walk in dusty paths, it was custom to wash their feet with cold water once they arrived to their home; lastly the host was to anoint their guest?s head. Well, guess what? Simon, the Pharisee did none of these things to Jesus when he personally invited Him to be his guest. Yet, the woman, who was considered a prostitute [the worst thing a woman could be in those days] did all those things to Jesus, with all that she had within her. And right before Jesus explained, in great detail, exactly what the woman had done, ?He turned toward the woman and said to Simon, ?Do you see this woman??? Looking straight into the eyes of the woman, he addressed Simon, and, actually? all of us. Do we see the person sitting next to us; do we see our neighbor; do we see our husband;

do we see our children; do we see our parents; do we see the person in front of us at the market looking for loose change? Do we truly see them? If so, with what eyes are we seeing each one of them? With eyes of earthly disgust or bitterness, or with the eyes of Jesus, filled with self-sacrifice? In Francis and Lisa Chan?s You and Me Forever, they write the following, ?Every day, the world bombards you with the messages of power, independence, and control. Jesus tells you the opposite: die to yourself? In an effort to gain ?converts,? Christians often refrain from telling the full story. We want people to follow, so like cheap salesman, we share the benefits without explaining the cost. We tell them about Jesus?promise and life of forgiveness, but we don?t mention His calls for repentance and obedience...? So, if we read what Jesus himself did, and we acknowledge that we are to obey His words, why is it so hard to see only the pretty things or ugly, criticize quickly, or covet with no remorse? For some, why do we allow fashion like the ones in our pages or social media status to overtake our minds; for others, why do we allow mommy talks to define or un-define our roles as women? Do we see people? Do we see ourselves? Coming back to the parable of the two debtors, although it?s very short, it is very deep and full of meaning. In fact, here at Chispa we?re available to further discuss this story with you. Do you have a big debt? Call or email us, we?re waiting?

Best-selling business writer Jim Collins has spent his career analyzing the secrets behind successful companies in his blockbuster books Good to Great and Built to Last. His most recent book, How the Mighty Fall, documents the reality that institutions, no matter how great, are vulnerable to decline. If they do not recognize their susceptibility and counterproductive behaviors, they can fall, regardless of previous accomplishments. The same calamity can happen with individuals: pastors, business leaders, fathers, mothers, and young people. Early or profound success is one of the key indicators of a potential fall. A Might y Good Man It was said of the leadership of King Uzziah, the tenth king of Judah, ?the Southern Kingdom was raised to a condition of prosperity that it had not known since the death of Solomon.? Uzziah became king at 16 years of age after the assassination of his father. The Bible recounts, ?And he did what was right in the sight of the LORD, according to all that his father Amaziah had done? (2 Chronicles 26:4). As a result, ?God helped him? (26:7) against Judah?s strong enemy armies and ?his fame spread as far as the entrance of Egypt, for he became exceedingly strong? (26:8). His army grew to 300,750 troops who ?made war with mighty power, to help the king against the enemy?

(26:13). ?So his fame spread far and wide, for he was marvelously helped till he became strong? (26:15). A Might y Bad At t it ude Notice that last phrase again; God helped him ?until he became strong.? Now look at the next statement in the biblical account: ?But when he was strong his heart was lifted up, to his destruction, for he transgressed against the Lord, his God.? Clearly, Uzziah?s power and achievements went to his head. He noticed that the pagan kings of Egypt enjoyed both the royal and the priestly functions. Uzziah, dissatisfied with royal power, now wanted divine power like the other kings of the other religions. However, Egypt?s gods were not the same as the Holy One of Israel, who required that only the consecrated priests offer up the incense in the temple service. Still, Uzziah entered the Temple to burn the priestly incense with complete disregard for God?s standards. The Pat hway of t he Fal l en Might y. As we review Uzziah?s gracious rise to prominence and his tragic forfeiture of God?s blessing, what can we learn? I see four lessons: Loss of godl y counsel . 2 Chronicles 26:5 tells us one of the secrets of Uzziah?s success: ?He sought God in the days of Zechariah, who had understanding in the visions of God; and as long as he sought the LORD, God made him prosper.? Uzziah enjoyed the godly counsel of

a prophet who instructed him in the fear of the Lord. Somewhere along the line, it appears that Zechariah died and Uzziah took a tragic turn to pride and self-will. Like Uzziah, we all need to pursue and accept the godly counsel of wise mentors during the course of our entire life. We never get beyond the blessing of courageous, biblical wisdom. If we do, we fail. Who are the ?Zechariahs? in your life today? How often do you seek their advice? Do you comply? Lack of account abil it y. Uzziah?s selfish aspirations soon overpowered his spiritual accountability. He even rebuffed the warnings of 81 godly priests. Power and fame can have that impact on people. They begin to believe they can ?break the rules? and get away with it. Learn from Uzziah. No one ever gets so successful, famous, or powerful that he can play "fast and loose" with God?s holiness and get away with it. How willing are you to submit to godly counsel when it goes against what you want or think you deserve? Love f or perceived privil eges. Psalm 62:10 warns, ?If riches increase, do not set your heart on them.? Like seawater, power and affluence demand that you keep drinking more, to your own eventual demise. Uzziah could not be content with life in Judah; he wanted what other kings had. Truly, there is always someone out there with more

prominence, possessions, talent, or toys. Godliness with contentment is great gain (1 Timothy 6:6). Discontent can undermine our godliness and our welfare when we seek privilege over piety. Has God blessed you with more than you deserve? Cherish these blessings humbly. Hold them loosely. Never compare or aspire for more than God grants or wills for you. Let hargy t oward t he hol iness of God. Ultimately, it seems Uzziah?s success became his idol, completely eclipsing his grasp of the holiness of God. He became more interested in exercising his royal rights than doing what was right in the sight of a holy God. Uzziah?s success disintegrated in an instant. Fame was replaced by shame. His successful reign as king was permanently corrupted by his ruin. But , The Might y One Remains. Yet, God?s holiness remained. This is underscored by the riveting account of Isaiah 6:1-8. Ultimately, the mighty fall because they disregard a holy God. Uzziah hardened his heart toward holiness. Isaiah humbled his heart before God?s holiness. Uzziah chose calamity. Isaiah received cleansing. Uzziah experienced a fall. Isaiah received a call. What do you choose? C Text Daniel Henderson Photos by Sarah I \ \ Ali Inay

Fi n d e n o l a Ti m e Som e When was the last time you spent some quality time with your number one fan, YOU? This issue?s productivity tip is to take some time for yourself. Simply indulge yourself, your senses, and your sensibilities and have fun. When you?re working your mind is totally focused. When you?re with your family, others get your attention. It?s important that YOU get some time to yourself. It?s so easy to be constantly going and engaged from morning till night and to forget your own needs. It?s time to relax your mind and body. [I have to remind myself of this all the time.] As my husband says: ?If momma ain?t happy? ain?t nobody happy.? Whether you crave time to: read, take a hot bath, have a quiet walk along a deserted path, listen to great music, take photos, move your body in dance, sweat and exercise, do yoga or tai chi, it matters not what you choose. What matters is that you choose to take time for yourself, celebrate the moment, and then do it again. Create a habit for yourself and soon you?ll find you won?t be able to live without it. When you?re feeling healthy and happy you?re a better mom, wife, daughter, and friend; as well as more effective in your business. Make and take time to be in your own skin. You?ll be happier, even when you?re doing nothing. C

birthday bucket list

Chispa Magazine

Tell me, when was the last time you tried something new? Something exciting? Something different? When was the last time you tasted a new food, listened to new music, learned a new skill? When did you last take a step outside your oh-so-comfortable comfort zone? Was it a long time ago? When was the last time you went to bed at night feeling totally exhilarated by the day you just left behind? When was the last time you made a memory so astounding, so special, that you wanted to rewind the clock so you could do it all over again? Was it a lifetime ago? If it was, then I recognize that boat you?re in.

Instead of waiting until I?m a slow moving wrinkle, I decided to start now. Not next year, not next month, NOW. And let me tell you, I?m so glad I did. So many things happened! So many things I couldn?t have predicted. Fun was had, goals were achieved, and fears were conquered. It was a splendid year.

I?d also been paddling up the mundane, mediocre, boring stream of no return for quite a while. Blessings for me though for me, something happened and that very same something can happen for you. All you need is a birthday and a bucket list.

Had a private security guard

Here?s how it works: Last year I turned the big 3-0 and decided upon this milestone that it was time for a change. Time for something new. So I set out to do 30 things I'd never done before: 30 firsts for my 30th year. The idea came about as I was updating my bucket list (i.e. that list of dreams and aspirations you hold onto until you?re very old; too old to do half the things that should?ve been done when you were young and springy).

Tried archery

Here are just a few of my 30 firsts: Held a tarantula Went bobsledding Starred in a country music video Talked my way out of a ticket

Pitched an idea to Dragons?Den Made a pie from scratch Went indoor skydiving Sang karaoke all by myself

Wrote a song Went 24 hours without food Became a teacher Ate a raw oyster? the list goes on! As others heard about this ?Birthday Bucket List? they were excited and inspired. They checked in throughout the year to hear about

Your Strategy | Windy Artist 15

what I?d done and what I had left to do. Several said they want to do the same thing for their next birthday. Right on!

you to come true!

Are you thinking what they?re thinking?

What are you waiting for? The right time, the right place, the right haircut? Life isn?t going to come bust down your door and happen to you; you have to go out there and happen to life. This is your year to be brave and bold. If I can do it, so can you. Get some birthday chispa! The time is perfect. If you?re reading this, that?s your cue. Just hold on tight, you?re about to have so much fun? Ready? Set? Now go! C

Well, the rules are easy: Whatever age you're turning, that's how many new things you try. You have until your next birthday rolls around to complete your list (so your birthdays act as the bookends for all your new escapades). If you're diggin' this concept, then by all means go for it. Now. Toss the paddles of mediocrity from your boring boat and dive into the luscious waters of excitement and adventure. Make a splash for yourself! You?ll be glad you did. What have you always wanted to try? Places you?ve wanted to see? Try those things! See those places! Have you wanted to do stand-up comedy? Order something crazy off the menu? Go snowboarding? Write a book? Make a wish on the Eiffel Tower? Whatever is on your list, get going. You owe it to your dreams? they?re counting on

All kinds of firsts are eager to meet you. And yes, small things count.

Most people have some kind of lifestyle vision for retirement. Unfortunately, without proper planning their dreams won?t always become a reality as they enter the encore time of their lives, says Michael Bivona, a certified public accountant who retired almost 20 years ago. ?I had a simple plan: When I stopped working I planned on living on my 42-foot Chris Craft cruiser with my wife, Barbara, which was a very pleasant pastime during my busy working years,? he says. ?But, after a few weeks, as we tried to make our dream a reality we found that we were bored out of our minds. ?Pre-retirees and retirees are rightly concerned about whether they can afford retirement. But, not having enough to do is another kind of deficit that is frequently overlooked until it?s too late,? says Bivona, author of the book Retiring? Beware!! Don?t Run Out of Money and Don?t Become Bored. He offers possible avenues to explore for a fulfilling retirement lifestyle. Develop a social network with senior civic centers. Civic centers, which usually have a department dedicated to the betterment of the senior citizens who live in their areas, can be found in almost every municipality in the United States. These centers offer a wide

range of activities. Additionally, the following online search, ?Fun Activities for Senior Citizens,? offers a nice list of activities and associated details that can be explored prior to retiring. Try on a pair of dancing shoes. For some, the thought of dancing may elicit a strong sense of aversion, but you may want to try it anyway. The benefits include exercise, coordination, and possibly enjoying a romantic hobby with your spouse or others. Dancing is a beautiful art form that gives participants something with which to challenge themselves, Bivona says. A goal-oriented mindset is a healthy one especially when approaching the encore years. Make the most of your travels. Traveling is a common bucket list item for most retirees. Of course, it?s going to cost you. That?s why this is a subject that perfectly combines the two great concerns for retirement: money and purpose, both of which can be maximized with ?research, research, research, Bivona says. You might even parlay traveling with another interest, such as your family history. You may learn about your roots at Ancestory.com, and then visit areas based on your research. Or, you may be more interested in stretching your dollar. There are many cost effective deals to be had by

researching your heart?s desire on the internet. Stay sharp and keep learning. The mind is much like the body: If you don?t use it you will accelerate the process of losing it. Building bridges to new adventures is the key to maintaining your mental acuity and increasing your vitality. There are an abundance of educational courses developed for seniors to keep them exercising their mental prowess. Remember, if you started working in your 20s and retire in your 60s, there?s a good chance you?ll spend as many years in retirement as you did working. So building bridges to what you want to do in a rational manner, for your encore years, is imperative if the last phase of your life is to be enjoyable for you and your love ones. We all carry a secret knowledge deep within us. A secret that weaves its way within and between us: There is more to life. As we grow up in this world, often the possibilities presented to us feel narrow and empty, devoid of the flesh and shiver of real life. What, then, would ?real life? be? Something like what Charles Eisenstein calls ?A more beautiful world our hearts know is possible.? We are born with it, with this knowledge of the true brilliance, depth, breadth (or breath) of our human nature, of our experience as living beings on this planet. Somehow the stories we are being told about the world today seem out of tune with this intimate knowledge. War. Crisis. Life equals Born + Go to School + Work for Money + Get Married + Climb The Ladder + Reproduce the Cycle. There is no alternative. Professionally, we often find ourselves turning into, what David Brooks called in The Road to Character, ?meritocratic materialists who have streamlined [our] inner humanity to make [our] ascent more aerodynamic,? showing up to work with only the part of ourselves that we deem fit for that environment. Wait a minute! If I streamline my humanity, what is left of me? Isn?t there more to life?

Chispa Magazine

More to life than doing as we?re told, fitting in, reproducing past trends and conforming to a norm that is no longer in tune with the world, and certainly not in tune with our profound aspirations? More to life than stepping on others?toes to make it to ?the top,? the heights of which often bring more loneliness, bitterness, and dissatisfaction? Surely, being alive is something fresh, vibrant, and colorful, something that beckons our hearts to break open and causes our souls to dance and wriggle with glee. Surely being alive as a human being on this planet brings deep connection to self and other? How can we snap out of the current world narrative and write a new story for ourselves? And as we grow, some of us may decide we want to have children. How do we break the cycle of the old narratives, bringing our children hope and breathing oxygen into their hearts and lives? One way is by telling different stories, stories of people who have come alive and, by doing so, splashed the lives of countless others in positive ripple effects. Such people do exist, and their lives are re-crafting our horizons, inspiring us to look within and find our own calling; that place deep inside that is crying for attention and begging to come into the world. What their stories tell us is that we

are born with it. We are born with this sacred place within that, when we can connect to it, reminds us of our importance in the walk of life, the walk for life. Of course we can change the world, though that is never the initial intention. The initial intention is to reconnect with what feels alive in us right now. When we are truly connected to that place inside, commitment follows suit, naturally, effortlessly. We discover that being grateful, generous, kind, creative, compassionate actors of our lives, our communities and our world comes easy to us. This is my invitation to you today. Connect to what is burning inside you at this present moment and stay with it. Feel it, recognize it, and commit to it. Musician Just Jack sings it this way, ?We are all embers from the same fire.? How do we tend to the fire, to keep our humanity burning? What is the oxygen? Who is the wood? What are the flames? What is the heat, and how do we make sure it warms as many hearts as possible? We are all born with the power to imagine what does not yet exist. When you connect to your own inner fire, what do you envision for our common destiny as human beings?

Maybe you could write it down as a letter, a ?letter to humanity!??How would you put into words your hopes for the world, and your aspiration to do something to bring change and make use of the talent that we all have in our hearts? Write whatever you like to the rest of your human family and imagine ?a million new friends?just waiting to hear from you. If you like, share your deepest hopes and yearnings. Feel free to reveal your insights? and don?t forget some thoughts about what you are going to do. I have done this exercise myself. Through reconnecting with my inner flame, I have ignited a spark that has danced into real life, birthing opportunities and projects that tied together my intuition of the importance of culture as a tool for personal and social transformation; and my desire to create spaces for youth of radically different backgrounds to connect, explore their differences, and discover their common humanity. There is more to Life. ?Talent? is ?Latent? unscrambled. So, are you ready to ignite the spark of your own talent and step into the bonfire of Life? C Text by Celicia Theys Photo by Wil Stewart

Wafaa Debs became a beauty mogul at the young age of 25. After graduating from The Fashion Institute of Technology in New York, she headed home to Austin, TX with inspiration to take her merchandising background and passion for beauty to a different level. She faced many obstacles when trying to open her new beauty concept store, Beaux Visage, including numerous bank loan rejections. You see, bank officers in the 90s didn?t understand her retail vision. However, on her last attempt, she finally found a loan officer that recognized her determination, most of all, the spark in her eye when she spoke about beauty was evident and understood. Importing niche beauty brands and developing a personalized sales technique that focused on mixing and matching brands to find clients the right products and shades, won Wafaa rave reviews and a loyal following. Beaux Visage soon garnered the attention of media publications like Town & Country, InStyle, and Austin Chronicle, and email requests began to trickle from around the country. As email sales grew in the late 90s, Wafaa became a beauty pioneer taking her advice and store online. At the time, she was the only one to house brands, such as Stila and Make Up For Ever, providing consumers the ease

purchase on the web. Much to the dismay of her clients in 2000, she closed shop and moved to Japan where her husband?s textile business, Debs Corporation, is now headquartered. While living and traveling abroad, Wafaa continued to research and test new products and services. From cosmetic counters in Japan to small boutiques in France, she made it her mission to uncover the best of beauty. Her experiences in tracking down hard to find products and services inspired her signature tagline, ?beauty is never found in one place.? While overseas, buzz quickly traveled about her extensive brand knowledge and uncanny ability to recommend products, simply by looking at someone. She once again started receiving requests for advice and product suggestions. For the past few years, Wafaa kept her Beauty Concierge Services only available to a small circle of celebrities and referrals, but in the beginning of Spring 2014 she launched her services to consumers in New York City, and virtually around the world. Wafaa also launched BeautyGypsy.com to share her expertise with a wider audience. I do believe I had good training in time management and efficiency while living in the Far East, but in general, I find women are really hard on themselves when they have a career and a family, but I hope that I am doing a good job.?

Outside of the business world, what is Wafaa's purpose, and what legacy would she like to leave behind? ?I won't lie, this took quite some time to answer; I was mulling over what to say or how to say it. I believe I have multiple purposes outside of the business world-mainly as a mom, wife, daughter, and sister. I'm a big family person and I would want my legacy to reflect that. I want to be known as a woman who took all her roles in life seriously and truly lived up to her potential. d o fo Chispa Magazine

Endometriosis is the disease that keeps on giving. Complications from this incurable gynaecological disease are extensive and for some women can be severe; ranging from excruciating pelvic pain, heavy or irregular periods, pain during sex, bowel problems and infertility. It has been reported approximately 6-10 percent of women in the general population have endometriosis. For women of reproductive age who have endometriosis, the frequency of infertility is 35-50 percent. What is Endomet riosis? In short endometriosis occurs when the lining of the uterus grows outside the uterus. The lining is expelled from the body as part of the monthly menstruation. But, in women with endometriosis, endometrial tissue enters back into the pelvic area through the fallopian tubes. Because the fallopian tubes are open-ended and not joined to the ovaries, the menstrual tissue is able to escape and attach to structures outside the uterus, such as the bladder, ovaries and bowel, where the tissue can grow. Often referred to as retrograde menstruation, the implants can wreak havoc, irritating the abdominal lining and sticking organs together with scar tissue. Hence, women who suffer painful periods may unknowingly have endometriosis. What Causes Endomet riosis? No one knows for sure. Popular theories range from retrograde menstruation, genetic pre-disposition: hereditary, autoimmune, stress, and exposure to every day toxins.

What is known, is endometriosis can have a devastating impact on the lives of suffers. Severe pain and bleeding can make it extremely difficult to cope with the demands of a career and family. The physical and psychological impacts of this condition are immeasurable. More often than not many women will deem symptoms of endometriosis as a normal part of their menstrual cycle. The long years before correct diagnosis can take their toll with irreversible damage to chances of fertility. Management of Endomet riosis. With no known cure on offer, women are generally offered two basic treatment options: hormone-altering drugs or surgery. However, most of these treatments interfere with the ability to conceive and could lead to surgically induced menopause. Whilst there is no cure for endometriosis, medical studies have proven changing your diet could be food for thought, as a part of a holistic approach to the management of this disease. One particular study found women who had undergone conservative pelvic surgery for symptomatic moderate to severe endometriosis confirmed the influence of diet in managing endometriosis further.1 Managing endometriosis through diet is about supporting the immune system to reduce inflammation and bring the disrupted hormone balance back into equilibrium. With this fact in mind, we take a scientific look at the role of hormones and food in the Features 35

management of endometriosis. Increase Consumpt ion of Crucif erous Veget abl es. Cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, cabbage, Brussels sprouts, bok choy, cauliflower, kale, radicchio and turnips contain plant phyto chemicals and indoles that help the liver flush out artificial estrogens collected in the body from external sources like environmental toxins, such as house hold chemicals, skin creams, detergents. Cruciferous vegetables contain substances called ?phyto-estrogens?that can protect against estrogen related diseases like endometriosis. Photo-estrogens do this by binding to excess estrogen in the gut and thereby encouraging its elimination.2

the most important nutritional changes you could make to fight estrogen dominance. Fiber acts like a sponge, it will soak up and expel excess estrogen via the bowel. Consuming more fiber in the form of whole grains, vegetables, fruit, legumes, and beans can reduce harmful circulating estrogen levels. Since excess estrogen leaves the body by way of the bowel, if stools remain in the colon the estrogen will be reabsorbed into the body.

Avoid Most Dairy. Avoid all foods containing whey, casein, and cow's milk or milk protein. You need to watch you dairy consumption, because of the naturally occurring as well as artificial estrogenic hormones contained in dairy. Dairy can increase the inflammatory prostaglandins. Please note goat and sheep based products are okay.

Decrease Sugar. Sugar increases fat, which in turn increases estrogen production. Eating foods with refined sugar causes the pancreas to produce insulin and can encourage an increase in fat cells and or course weight gain. Fat cells produce the aromatase enzyme and small amounts of estrogen. Consequently, the more fat cells the more estrogen is produced. Too much glucose in the bloodstream also encourages the production of prostaglandin 2(PGE2), this is the chemical released by the immune system that causes further inflammation in areas where inflammation already exists. Sugar also reduces the amount of beneficial bacteria that live in the gut. As these bacteria are needed to absorb nutrients from food, a diet high in sugar can quickly lead to poor nutrition and hinder the absorption of the minerals and vitamins that are needed for a fully functioning hormonal system.

Increase Fiber Int ake. Increasing your fiber, intake particularly the soluble kind, is one of

Decrease Al cohol . Regular consumption of alcohol places enormous pressure on the

Phyto-estrogens are plant compounds that mimic a weak version of estrogen in the body. All cells have estrogen receptors that act like a lock, with estrogen as the key for certain processes. However phyto-estrogens can block this lock and key system thereby preventing the activation of excess estrogen.

liver. Estrogen is metabolized and broken down by the liver, consumption of alcohol can impair liver function which makes it difficult for the liver to properly metabolize estrogen allowing higher levels of estrogen to build up in the body and fed endometriosis implants. Alcohol contains high levels of sugar, as discussed above, if this sugar turns to fat your body will struggle to eliminate excess estrogren, inflaming endometriosis implants. Increase Consumpt ion of Omega 3 Fat t y Acids. In the study, A Prospective Study of Dietary Fat Consumption and Endometriosis Risk (2010), it was found, that specific types of dietary fat are associated with the incidence of laparoscopically confirmed endometriosis. Essential fatty acids have a profound effect on the reproductive system and are crucial for healthy hormone functioning. The equilibrium of the hormone system is reliant on a regular supply of omega 3 fatty acids. These essential fats are found in nuts, seeds and fish such as salmon. When omega 3 fatty acids are correctly metabolized in the body, they convert to the beneficial prostaglandins PGE1 and PGE3, which can help fight endometriosis. Both PGE1 and PGE3 are anti-inflammatory agents they protect against blood related diseases, by keeping blood platelets slippery and flowing, thus preventing blood clotting. Whereas PGE2 is an inflammatory prostaglandin and increases platelet stickiness, swelling, pain, and blood clotting. If you feel your diet is

lacking in omega 3 fatty acids, speak with a qualified dietician, the wrong combination of omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids can cause further inflammation. Western diets are typically high in omega 6 fatty acids and this can counter act any benefits from increasing omega 3 fatty acids. Decrease Sat urat ed Fat s. Saturated fats are found in fried and fast foods, they increase circulating levels of several inflammatory markers. Dairy produce and red meat are rich sources of saturated fat and contain a substance called arachadonic acid. Excess arachadonic acid triggers the production of PGE2, the inflammatory prostaglandin that causes endometrial cramps and the spread of endometriosis. Changing your diet can be incredibly empowering when faced in the throes of this debilitating condition. Changing diet plans can be the easiest and most effective action you can take, as a part of a holistic approach to keep this condition under control. In consideration of other available management options, being surgery and or hormone altering drugs, changing diets is more than just food for thought. They are everywhere. On every surface: on our hands, our lips and noses and everywhere on us and in us. There is no crevice, nook or cranny of our bodies that is excluded. They will find us, no matter what we do. It's just fact. Germs are everywhere, all around us, and it will always be so. Recent studies concentrating on schools have cataloged how surprisingly fast germs can spread. For example, in one study conducted in a school, an invisible powder was placed on the hands of two children in a fourth grade class. The powder did not have any bacteria. Instead, it was a harmless product that remained invisible to the eye but tracked on any surface with an ultraviolet light scanner. In the span of a single hour, every child in the classroom had come into contact with it and had it on their hands, faces, and noses. The video that accompanies this research is very impressive. Certainly, any virulent pathogen can exhibit the same kind of rapid spread. In fact, that particular school system had previously suffered an outbreak of Norovirus, the same type of virus that afflicts some cruise ships, and 150 children and staff were sickened. What do these experiments teach us then? How might we best protect ourselves?

Certainly, hand washing is important. If done correctly, risk of the spread of pathogens is diminished. However, many scientific studies indicate that hand washing as a societal solution has significant limitations. Most people don't wash their hands effectively or frequently enough to make any important difference. The current recommendations for hand rinsing with soap is for a 15-20 second scrub. It takes that long before it becomes an effective deterrent. However, a 2013 study from Michigan State found that fewer than 5 percent of all subjects washed their hands according to these guidelines. In fact, many individuals don't wash their hands at all when using the bathroom. Interestingly, the data for alcohol based hand sanitizers is decidedly mixed. It is more effective than soap and water in some circumstances for certain germs and not for others. For instance, there is some evidence this is not an effective method to prevent the spread of Norovirus that leads to significant gastrointestinal illness. It is even possible that it actually hastens the dispersion of that pathogen. Perhaps the better answer is to take a lesson from the experiments. The spread of any infection begins with a single individual in any specific local setting. So, if that index person is not in the classroom, then obviously

Features 39

everyone else had a much better chance of remaining healthy. The spread of pathogens is inevitable at school once the pathogen gains access to that environment. Therefore, a sick person shouldn't should not go to school, or work. Although it might seem obvious, it really isn't. Some people attend school and work thinking they are well, don't feel sick, but can still be carriers of a serious infectious agent. More commonly though, students and teachers come to school feeling 'just a bit under the weather' with a sniffle or an early cold. Sorry about that. They (or their parents) are making a good faith decision they shouldn't miss school. This is a very ingrained aspect of our culture. For example, when I was in active medical practice as a physician for 30 years, I never took a sick day. It was not that I was never sick. I came to work sick, often much sicker than my patients. That was our practice norm at that time. In that era, unless you were absolutely unable to function, you were expected to come to work. So the single most-effective means of improving health, particularly during seasonal illnesses such as the flu, is to create a culture that instructs those who are sick to stay away and only return when they are better. Cultural norms need to be changed and systems need to be

Chispa Magazine

put in place that regard this response as a societal duty that does not penalize those that must remain absent. Sometimes, the answer to a problem in biology is not more technology. In certain circumstances, the best response is an obvious, time tested and low tech one. If you are sick, and know that you can spread germs to otherwise healthy people, stay home and let it pass. There is also a little appreciated flip side to these same studies documenting how quickly germs can be transmitted. Although avoiding any active infection is an object to be sought, let's not forget that the continuous exposure to germs is a crucial element of a healthy immune system. As we deeply investigate our complex interactions more and co-existence with the microbial sphere, we are learning there is continuous exposure to many good microbes, as well as some bad ones. A germ that doesn't kill you or permanently harm you makes you stronger on an immunological basis. So, let's learn how to better cope with germs, but let's not go crazy in doing so. My son wanted to check the progress of the pears. Because the tree was close to the road, and because I?m a mamma, I told him to be careful and watch for traffic. ?I know, Mom,? was the reply. I continued to explain why it?s important to be cautious. ?I know, Mom,? was the less-than-patient reply. I went over and marked out a do-not-cross line between the tree and the road. ?I know, Mom!? came the slightly-irritated reply. Then it was time for my reply, ?I know that you know; but I am waiting to hear you tell me that you will.? Knowing and doing are two very different things. Every mamma knows this to be a true statement. We have seen, in the examples of our children, that knowing and doing can live harmoniously together or estranged from one another. As adults, our lives also show a relationship between knowing and doing. Our Heavenly Father puts boundaries out there, for His glory and our safety. Do we know them? Do we live inside those boundaries? What is the relationship between knowing and doing in your life? Do you know the Word of God? Do you do the will of God? Or, do you know but not do? Our response to that perfect and pleasing will is not simply to know it, but

to do it. You, see, the Lord wants our response to his will to be a hearty and an immediate ?I will!? The warning here is that doing is not enough on its own. Many people do good things hoping it will make them good people, and gain them entrance to heaven when their time on Earth is done. But, nothing we can do is enough. In fact, Romans 3:28 ESV, says ?For we hold that one is justified by faith apart from works of the law.? And, Isaiah 64:6 ESV says, ?We have all become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous deeds are like a polluted garment. We all fade like a leaf, and our iniquities, like the wind, take us away.? Neither is knowledge alone sufficient. Many people know there is a God. Interesting how James 2:19 ESV says. ?You believe that God is one; you do well. Even the demons believe? and shudder!? Knowing is simply not enough. Scripture tells us that a saving faith will produce fruit. Jam 2:17, 22, 24 ESV, says ?So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead. You see that faith was active along with his works, and faith was completed by his works; You see that a person is justified by works and not by faith alone. In a saving faith, there is a doing that grows from the knowing.? So, how much of our time do we spend gaining knowledge and for what purpose if that spiritual knowledge is never transferred

TI M E To Turn A round

Chispa Magazine

The drive to the doctor appointment for my son took over two hours this morning. It should take about 45 minutes, but traffic was atrocious today. I sat in it most of the way, grumbling, thinking about my sore butt and wishing I hadn?t had that second cup of coffee. We got to the doctor?s office and waited another hour before we were seen. You can imagine, by this time I am feeling quite joyful? false! The only thing, truthfully, that kept me from really going off the edge of the grumpy cliff was vanity? I?m old enough now that the vertical wrinkle between my eyes could become permanent with the least provocation. But, something happened to turn the day around. We received very good news at the doctor today. Let me give you a little background. My son, Parker, has been battling a rare and incurable autoimmune disease for eight years. He has not been in the statistically fortunate group that goes into remission after one treatment. He has had to drink nasty medicine, swallow pills, get intravenous transfusions, have shots at home? not the stuff you want your childhood memories to be made of. In short, he has suffered. He has suffered

even more than I suffered driving him to his appointment today, obviously. Life is not easy. Suffering is inevitable. The day started off bumpy, but? life is full of buts; that magical turnaround word. But? the doctor had good news for us today. Parker?s lab results were favorable and, for the first time in many years, we get to go off of a major drug he takes to control the disease. Suddenly I am not even thinking about the traffic that I had endure to receive this news. I am not grumbling anymore. I feel joy and gratitude edging their way into my previously negative mindset. What if I had known when I left the house that I would be receiving such fantastic news? Would I have grumbled less on the ride to the doctor? Would I have focused more on the Big Picture and less on the little annoyances all around me? Life is like that, full of bad days, bad traffic, and incurable illnesses. What a bummer it would be if at the end of all things, that was it? no hope of anything better. Nevertheless, we do have hope and plenty of it if you wish to dive into it. Scripture is full of truths and reminders about God?s goodness. Although it doesn?t sugar coat the reality that trials are inevitable, it so sweetly reminds that our trials are important, valuable, and full of potential.

Originally trained in fashion at the Cours Berรงot, Sylvia Toledano is an artist and painter who has created collections of luxurious evening bags and accessories. All of her original designs are entirely encrusted in Australian crystals and can only be described as elegant, each with a unique spiritual meaning. After opening her first store in Paris, Toledano had a chance to sit with Chispa to speak of her journeys, her wants, and her hunger for harmony, fun, and humor.

Q: Wh at j ourneys f rom your ch i l dh ood and adol escence carv ed you i nto th e w oman and arti st you are today? I remember that I was always drawing during all my childhood. I was dreaming about kilometers of white paper and colors when I was 5 years old. When my parents asked, ?what do you want to be when you grow up??my sisters often answered they would love to be doctor or steward in a plane; I always answered, painter. Later I studied law and wanted to work in auctions, just like my father? he kept saying to me that being a painter was not a real job. But later again, I became a painter and sold in auctions. I made it to the Cours Berรงot in Paris for Fashion Design and I began my brand of accessories in 2008. Interesting how my Minaudieres Collection have all the same shape because my intention, my concept, is to draw in thousands of designs and the shape is not the real deal, just like in life.

We just make the work that we love and we are growing, surely, but slowly. We just opened our first shop in Paris in the Place Vendome area and for us, this is a big business step to present to the world our Parisian brand's image. I want to develop unique pieces only for our store, limited editions and exclusive collaborations.

They say, ?we want harmony, fun, humor, and happiness,? that's why I like drawing messages of love on my minaudieres; and I love the spiritual meaning of the stones in my jewels. I don't want to take myself too seriously! I want to keep the spirit of the little girl inside me.

The Bearden Temple AME Church in Reynoldstown, an in-town neighborhood in east Atlanta, languished as an underutilized apartment until architects at Kronberg Wall envisioned its stone faรงade, choir, and original stained glass windows as the ideal setting for the firm?s inspirational new offices. Located in a historic neighborhood a short walk from the Atlanta BeltLine east trail and MARTA station, the Kronberg Wall offices include 2,500 sq. ft. of space for the firm upstairs and 2,000 sq. ft. of leasable office space downstairs. Rows of workspaces now line the nave, while the choir is hometo the conference area. ?We were first attracted to this church because of its location on the east side of town,? says Kronberg Wall principal Adam Wall. ?We strongly believe in urban infill and the continued development of our in-town communities. The character-defining features and the presence and significance of its architecture were immediately apparent to us. Then we learned more about the building?s rich history and knew it fit perfectly with our desire to build community while honoring the past.? Located in the historic Reynoldstown community at 887 Wylie Street, Bearden Temple AME Church is listed as a contributing structure to the Reynoldstown National Register District because of its early 20 th-century architecture, as well as its

significance for African American denominations in the area. Under the leadership of Reverend J.R. Gardner, the church was constructed in 1922 of granite quarried at Stone Mountain and transported to the site by horse and buggy. In late December 1950, the church was critically damaged by fire; however, under the leadership of Reverend O.F. Maddox, the congregation quickly rebuilt the church in less than six months. Today, the Bearden Temple AME Church is among the most substantial churches in the district. The gable-front church features twin towers and arched windows across the faรงade with solid granite walls that are nearly two feet thick. Its 20 custom stained glass windows remain in exceptional condition for all to see. ?We found the cornerstone in the mechanical room, and a local blogger was able to provide us with pictures of one of the pastor?s record books with stories about the congregation dating back to 1895,? says Wall. ?We discovered that a donkey and a hog, both named Gospel, lived at the church, and we?ve decided that they?ll remain our unofficial office mascots. Our goal is to be good stewards of this historic landmark and continue to maintain a building that portrays such a rich architectural legacy engrained in the Reynoldstown community.? C

Mussel Pot wit h Beer Steamed mussels are such an easy yet extremely tasty dish. You can make the broth with just water and a good tomato base but by adding a splash of wine or in this case some beer it goes to the next level of flavor town. For the broth I used 5 330ml cans of Piston Head lager, Swedish beer with a really nice, crispy taste. Eaten straight out of the pot or in a bowl with a crispy baguette, this mussels dish so good you will make it probably the next day for friends that missed out on it the night before. Ingredient s: - Fresh Australian mussels. About 4 lbs - Tomato paste - 1 chopped onion - 4 cloves of crushed garlic - Salt and pepper - Butter - Olive oil - About 1 and half liters of beer - Parsley

Preparat ion: 1. Rinse the mussels under cold water. Pick them over, pulling off any beards and discarding any mussels that are broken or gaping open. 2. In a large pot with a lid, heat the oil and butter over medium heat. Add the garlic, onion tomato paste, salt and pepper, and cook until fragrant and soft. 3. Add the mussels, beer, and half of the parsley. Increase the heat to high, and cover the pan. After 2 minutes, remove the lid and toss the mussels well with a large spoon. Cover the pot again and cook until the mussels have opened wide, another 3 to 4 minutes. Add the remaining parsley, a knob of butter, and another splash of beer give the mussels a final toss, and divide the mussels and the broth among bowls or as I do in Dolcethe Hotels and Resorts a large shared bowl or pot. Serve bread alongside.

Whiskey Chicken Wings This chicken wing recipe is one of my all-time favorite ones. They are sweet, sticky and moorish. The whiskey marinade and sauce makes this a winner. Best cooked on a coal BBQ. Ingredient s: - Chicken wings. A little or a lot. You will want a lot they are too tasty for one. (Prep them by twisting the wing so they cook flat.) - About a cup of whiskey - 1 cup of stock (homemade) - Onion and garlic flakes - Sea salt and pepper corns - Paprika - Brown sugar - Jalape単o - 1 onion - 4 cloves of garlic - Molasses - Butter - Olive oil

Preparat ion: 1. For the marinade place the finely diced onion, crush garlic using your knife to form a paste and slice jalape単os. Add to bowl. Then add the stock molasses and whiskey. For the rub, in a mortar and pestle grind salt and pepper corns, add the onion, garlic flakes, brown sugar and paprika. Rub chicken with the mix getting into every nook and cranny. Take one zip lock bag or container, place in the rubbed chicken and pour the liquid marinade into vessel. Seal and let it sit in the fridge overnight. 2. Fire up the grill and get the coals nice and hot. Add peach wood or hickory chips for an awesome smoky flavor explosion. Arrange in one layer on the grill set over indirect low heat. If you are using charcoal or wood, it will be very difficult to do this, so set your fire on one side of the grill and arrange the wings on the other side, away from the direct heat. You want them to cook slowly, with little or no sizzle. Baste with marinade then cover the grill and cook like this for 30 minutes. 3. Once the chicken is nice and charred and cooked Dolce Hotels and Resorts through remove from heat de-glaze pan (pour juices back into pan) with some more stock and marinade. Add butter, some more brown sugar if you like and reduce until you get a thick sticky sauce. 4. Drench the chicken with the sauce and get messy. C

Oct ober is Domest ic Viol ence Awareness Mont h: New Book Ident if ies + Exposes Most Venomous Rel at ionships Thousands of women are trapped in venomous, abusive relationships, where their partner verbally belittles them. They?re made to feel worthless and alone, isolated from their friends, told they?re unlovable and living under a constant barrage of verbal abuse. Venomous Relationships: Learn How to Avoid Common Relationship Bloopers by Certified Life Coach and abuse survivor, Tamara Neal, exposes the most common, but often unrecognized, abusive relationships? those where one partner emotionally manipulates and verbally abuses the other. Through all-too-real examples, Neal helps readers identify emotional abuse and makes practical suggestions for moving on, healing, and entering into new, loving relationships. Neal wrote Venomous Relationships in the style of a heart-to-heart coffee shop conversation with a good friend, one who?s willing to help confront the pain and loss of self-worth associated with emotional abuse. With love and honesty, she reminds us of the inner strength and self-confidence we already possess? and the need to reclaim our lives. ?I wrote Venomous Relationships to prevent other women from facing the common, silent relationship heartbreak I?ve not only seen

happen to many of my friends, family, and acquaintances but have also experienced myself,? says Neal. ?It?s often very difficult for a woman to admit she?s being abused, particularly if she?s competent and successful in other areas of her life. I needed to find a way to get the attention of women suffering from the silent trauma of abuse and hope my book provides them the wake-up call they need.? Neal continues, ?I show the reader there?s only one person they can and should change, and that?s themselves. If you keep an open mind and a strong desire to acknowledge the role you?ve played in toxic relationships, you?ll be able to heal and ultimately learn how to love someone else, but more importantly, love yourself.?
