National President to Present at APA

Message from the National President Since my last update, more than 300 faculty, staff, students and community partners came together to make sense of the Newtown tragedy during campus forums held to discuss access to mental health services and how we can prevent these senseless acts of violence from reoccurring. To further position our institution’s contribution to these issues, I had the privilege of signing an open letter to curb gun violence, and attended a press conference spearheaded by Education Secretary Arne Duncan, college presidents, students and mayors to gather support on this issue. I also provided my thoughts about making schools and families a top priority in my recent Huffington Post blog. Also, since my last update, TCSPP became an institutional partner in the prestigious Edward A. Bouchet Graduate Honor Society. Dr. Orlando Taylor, Washington D.C. Campus President and Chief Development Officer, and I will travel to Yale University on April 19 for the official induction during the 10th Annual Yale Bouchet Conference. I was also honored to be invited as keynote speaker and to participate in a panel discussion titled, “The Aftermath of Newtown: Violence, Mental Health and Implications for the Bouchet Scholars.” As the national conversations on this issue advance, we will continue to outline concrete recommendations, so stay tuned for more information as activities take shape around our campuses and communities. Warm regards,

Michele Nealon-Woods

Dr. Nealon-Woods will participate in a panel discussion at the upcoming APA Convention in a presentation titled, The Joint Degree Option for Training Psychologists in Psychopharmacology. Several faculty members and students will also be presenting. Look for a full listing in our next issue.

Student Develops Social-Emotional Learning Program for At-Risk Youth Clinical Psy.D. student Christine Brooks developed the Brooks Afterschool Socio-Emotional (BASE) Learning Program—with Chicago’s West Rogers Park Afterschool Program—for effective, culturally competent prevention for at-risk youths. The Learn and Serve Student Leader Fellowship provided training and financial support. BASE’s mission is to develop social-emotional learning skills in children, grades K-3. The afterschool program helps children increase their ability to be resilient and cope in the face of challenging circumstances, and also to succeed in interpersonal relationships. Mentors facilitate weekly socioemotional lessons and activities, conduct psycho-educational presentations in the community, and help run parenting groups. Cultural competency is also integrated since many of the kids are first or second-generation immigrants. The children showed a statistically significant increase in their Children’s Empathic Attitudes Questionnaire scores after the program was implemented. Yonatan Rosenblum, a fourth-year, Clinical Psy.D. student, has since led the program after Christine moved on to her internship. The students have presented their findings from BASE at several academic conferences.

New Student Satisfaction Survey to Launch The 2013 Student Satisfaction Survey will launch on March 18. Students are encouraged to share feedback, and will soon receive a personalized link to start the process. Students who fill out the survey will qualify to win one of five $100 gift cards.
