ANNUAL REPORT

2010

A MESSAGE FROM OUR OWNER Throughout 2010 the Chicago Fire Foundation maintained its leadership role and commitment to enriching the lives of the Chicagoland community, particularly its youth. Since 1998 the Chicago Fire and the Chicago Fire Foundation have made an enduring impact on the community. To date, the Foundation has contributed more than $1.4 million dollars in grants and contributions, providing enormous opportunities for so many throughout the Chicagoland area. Part of the Chicago Fire Foundation’s ability to enrich lives in Chicagoland has come with great help from the players who have generously donated thousands of hours to give back to the community. These efforts include everything from clinics and book readings to autograph signings and hospital visits with our long standing partner in Children’s Memorial Hospital. In 2010 our team has given back to the community through more than 150 appearances including food and toy drives, visiting Boys & Girls Clubs, reading to children in libraries and serving as celebrity wait staff for various fundraising events that support the Foundation. Within the Fire organization, the players are not alone in giving back to the community. Each year many of

our supporters, sponsors and front office staff continue to strive to make a lasting impact in our community. The club’s Kicks for Kids program is a prime example of the impact the organization has had on Chicago-area youth. Kicks for Kids enables underprivileged children the opportunity to experience the excitement of a Fire game at TOYOTA PARK. Throughout the 2010 season, more than 8,000 children benefited from the program. For many of these children this is the first experience they have had to see a professional soccer game. With each year brings new challenges and excitement for the organization and there is a lot to look forward to on the field in 2011. A new young hard working team with lots of talent, international competition with a match against the English giant Manchester United, and the quest for both our fifth Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup and another MLS Cup Championship. On behalf of everyone associated with the Chicago Fire organization and all those who benefit from your generous commitment—we extend a heartfelt thank you. Sincerely, Andrew Hauptman, Owner

PRESIDENT’S LETTER 2010 was filled with many proud moments for the Chicago Fire and the Chicago Fire Foundation. Through our continued work in the community and with the generosity of our supporters, we continued to grow and make our mark on the Chicagoland community. In light of the challenging economic climate, the Foundation was able to continue to give back to the community in 2010. Highlighted by the Season Kickoff Luncheon, which was attended by a record 750 guests and raised more than $70,000, the Foundation got the year off to a great start. Along with the luncheon, with your continuous support and generosity, our fans, the Fire, and the Foundation continued to grow our staple events such as the Commemorative Jersey Auction, the annual Frank Klopas Golf Outing and the 50/50 Raffle during home games. One of the teams’ highlights in 2010 was our “Fire Goes Green” initiatives. On April 22, 2010, Chicago Fire players,

staff and over 100 volunteers planted 40 trees at TOYOTA PARK in celebration of the 40th anniversary of Earth Day. A notable achievement of the year was when the Chicago Fire was awarded the MLS W.O.R.K.S. Community Relations Department of the Year, thanks to the tireless efforts of the Community Relations/Chicago Fire Foundation staff. We look forward to further expanding our programming and outreach in 2011. We remain steadfast in our mission to enrich the lives of the Chicagoland community, particularly its youth, in the areas of health, wellness, education and the environment. We greatly appreciate your support of the Foundation throughout the 2010 campaign and together with your help, will continue to reach new heights! Sincerely, Frank Klopas, President Chicago Fire Foundation

CHILDREN’S MEMORIAL HOSPITAL Children’s Memorial Hospital is Illinois’ only freestanding hospital exclusively for kids. Ranked #1 in almost every major pediatric specialty, they provide superior pediatric healthcare in a compassionate, family-centered environment. In 2010, the Foundation partnered with CMH’s Institute for Sports Medicine to provide funding for its Knee Injury Prevention Program (KIPP) which is designed to lower the risk of ACL injuries in athletes. Like Children’s Memorial Hospital, the Chicago Fire Foundation is also dedicated to improving the health and well-being of children. CFF continues to support the hospital through contributions and visits. On July 22, Brian McBride spent time visiting patients and presented a check to represent the Foundation’s support towards CMH.

Scoring Through Education The Chicago Fire and the Chicago Fire Foundation provided supplies and curriculum for the “Scoring Through Education” program. This free, in-class incentive program designed to help motivate students to achieve educational success. The program serves as a tool for teachers who seek unique tactics to help enhance their classroom activities. In 2010, the “Scoring Through Education” program reached more than 60 schools, with almost 20,000 students involved in this great program. Each participating student received a free ticket to a Chicago Fire game.

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society is an organization with a mission to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma, and improve the quality of life of patients and their families. LLS has dedicated itself to being one of the top-rated voluntary health agencies in terms of dollars that directly fund their mission. The Chicago Fire Foundation, in cooperation with the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, partnered to produce “Kicks for Cancer,” an event that uses the sport of soccer to help raise funds and awareness of blood 15 disorders. Through this pledge-based event, participants were 2010 ANNUAL REPORT challenged to “touch” a soccer ball using techniques that include dribbling, passing, and shooting. Proceeds were then matched by the Foundation to form the grant that was publicly presented at a Fire game during the half time ceremony at TOYOTA PARK.

BACK TO SCHOOL The Chicago Fire joined forces with schools throughout Chicago to help boost back-to-school efforts and ensure that children were in the classroom on day one for the start of the 2010/2011 school year. The Fire, Chicago Public Schools (CPS), Cristo Rey High School and the United Neighborhood Organization (UNO) hosted a number of back-to-school events in the fall as students prepared for their return to school.

Kicks for Kids The “Kicks for Kids” program enables individuals to support underprivileged children by giving them the opportunity to experience the excitement of a Chicago Fire game at TOYOTA PARK. For many, this was their first time experiencing a Major League Soccer game. Included in the program is a designated annual “Kicks for Kids Night” which was held Thursday, July 8, 2010. The Chicago Fire and Chicago Fire Foundation teamed up with local contributors and businesses to celebrate the 7th Annual “Kicks for Kids Night” which was attended by nearly 5,000 children. Over the course of the entire season, more than 8,000 children from over 40 local youth-based organizations benefitted from “Kicks for Kids.”

The Chicago Fire Foundation and Girls on the Run-Chicago teamed up to host the 4th Annual Girls on the Run-Chicago Fall 5K on November 13, 2010 at TOYOTA PARK. Over 2,500 runners participated and had the unique opportunity to run around the TOYOTA PARK field and see themselves on the big screen as they crossed the finish line. Girls on the Run-Chicago is an after-school program for 3rd through 8th grade girls that uses the power of running to educate and inspire girls for a lifetime of self-respect and healthy living. The 12-week program culminates in a non-competitive 5K run event which gives the girls a chance to shine and an overwhelming sense of accomplishment.

Passback Program In 2010 the Chicago Fire and the Chicago Fire Foundation, in conjunction with the U.S. Soccer Foundation, once again participated in the Passback Program. The Passback Program allows individuals to donate new or gently used soccer equipment, which is then passed back to youth soccer programs in the community. At the June 5, 2010 Fire vs. Philadelphia Union game, the Chicago Fire Foundation held a Passback drive, collecting over 3,000 pieces of equipment. Since its inception, the program has grown enormously and thousands of pieces of equipment have been collected and distributed to schools, clubs and youth organizations across the nation. From a small school in Zimbabwe to an after-school program in inner-city Chicago, Passback gear has found its way to all corners of the globe.
