Our flexible curriculum lets you choose the courses that complement your experience, test your limits, help you surpass them, and get you where you really want to go. But don’t worry—you won’t be on your own. Chicago Booth’s core curriculum and collaborative approach ensure you’ll have all your bases covered. Our learning environment is based on one essential fact: There are neither enough formulas nor business cases to span the range of decisions you’ll face in your career. Johnni Rodgers, Evening MBA In seeking my MBA, I wanted to transform the way I think, and everything I learned about Chicago Booth told me I could do that. Before I applied, I visited a marketing class and by chance sat between a tax lawyer and a consultant. I spend most of my day with other marketers, so it was a very new experience to talk about my field of interest with people who work in other functions. Experiences like these influence the way I look at my business every day. The classroom dynamic at Chicago is extremely open. The professors encourage us to put our ideas up for debate, and as a result, we become better at expressing ourselves and at giving and receiving constructive criticism. These exercises are built into the culture of Chicago —regardless of what class you’re in—and are what help make this place so amazing.

I can see myself improving after every class, particularly in areas that I can take to work the next day and apply right away. My background is predominately sales and marketing, and I was looking to refine my ability in those areas while also develop in areas where I’m not as experienced. Chicago Booth gives me access to an exceptional marketing curriculum and still lets me take advantage of the program’s many other strong areas. One of the things I like best about Chicago Booth is that you have the opportunity to build your own education based on your career path and what you think you need most. Right now I’m taking a course about networks within the workplace and how to optimize them, and my finance and accounting classes will be helpful as I advance in brand management. LEARN MORE

David Alpert, Weekend MBA There’s an electricity in the learning environment here. Whether it’s in class or outside the classroom, the students and professors are excited about getting into the subjects. Everyone wants to get it right, to understand, and to question how something works. People are coming up with new ideas and challenging each other all the time. It’s very exciting. The professors are just as enthusiastic and energetic as we are. They’re also extremely accessible. I sent an email to one professor saying I was lost on something, and he picked up the phone and called me. They really care about the concepts— and the students. The depth of instruction is incredible. Other schools’ professors might say, “Here’s what this means, trust me.” Here it’s, “Here’s a concept, let’s prove it and explore what it means.” One of my professors was at the Federal Reserve, and he would spend the beginning of class talking about what was going on in the world and at the Fed and asking us what we thought.

Not too many schools have professors who spend their week helping Ben Bernanke. That’s a Chicago-only thing. I came in thinking I would concentrate in international business and finance. But I enjoyed my investments class so much— pulling apart theory, applying it to markets, and understanding how things are flowing —that I’m continuing down the analytic finance path. I get to take classes with professors like Eugene Fama, Christopher Culp, and Steve Kaplan.

This isn’t a part-time program where you can only take certain classes with certain professors. The classes and faculty are no different from the fulltime program. You make the degree you want. I feel extremely confident going forward. I used to be siloed in my approach to problem solving. Now when I approach a deal, I think through all the aspects beyond the financials, dissect what’s on the surface, and get underneath it. I’ve expanded my level of knowledge and my ability to evaluate things as I move forward.

Katie Van Deventer, Evening MBA I love the excitement of going to school at Chicago Booth. I can tell with every minute that I’m growing as an individual and shaping my ideas in ways that will benefit me for the rest of my life. I did not envision dedicating so much time to the extracurricular activities here, but it’s been one of the best parts of my experience by far. The excitement at Booth makes you want to do everything you can. I’m involved in a lot of student groups and have organized activities like golf outings and energy panels. People come to campus every Saturday to hear speakers, even if they don’t have class.

You never know when you’re going to meet your next boss or a potential business partner. It’s exciting knowing that everyone here has so much potential. I’ve met so many people that I have a whole new group of friends. During Orientation, I met two women whom I now golf with most weekends. And the MBA Olympics, which we won the last two years, was a true bonding experience.

Everyone here is open to meeting new people and making friends, which is one of the great qualities of this school. I love that it is so diverse here. When I’m learning about doing business in Asia, it’s incredibly helpful to have students from Asia in the class who can give us their take on what it’s like there. With this interaction with so many different cultures, we’ll be stronger leaders because we’ll be comfortable in any kind of setting. The facilities here are an important factor. Gleacher Center is right downtown. I love the lounges on each side of the building that look out over the river and city. You almost feel like you’re sitting outside. And the classrooms are really conducive to learning. I love being here. Standing in the building, you can feel the potential.

Iyyappan Pandiyan, Weekend MBA There’s a real sense of community among my classmates. I now know people from San Francisco, LA, New York, Houston—all coming together in Chicago, forming friendships, and helping each other academically and professionally. I’m absolutely making friends for life. There are about 20 other Chicago Booth students from Minneapolis, and we’re often on the same flights, so we meet in the airport lounge and chat about work or family. On Friday nights, after I check into my hotel, I usually meet up with other students and have dinner or drinks. It began small and informally, but as more and more people joined us, I approached the Program Office about making it a schoolsponsored event. They are very helpful in connecting you to the resources to achieve what you want. The Student Advisory Council ended up taking it over and it turned into a formal networking event called Friday Frenzy. It’s been a great way for evening and weekend students to meet each other.

Chicago Booth’s network is awesome. It’s one of the main reasons I came here. The school does a tremendous job maintaining the alumni network.

I recently made a lot of connections at Worldwide Booth Night, where alumni, students, and incoming students meet at events across the world. And alumni are very receptive to your calls if you want to learn about their industry or business in their region. One of the best events I attended was an interview workshop put on by Career Services that also had a networking session. It was more than just going through interviews—it helped build community. That’s the great thing about Booth—whenever we have events we always try to catch up and meet new people. I have met very interesting people at Booth—some who just started nonprofits, others who are accountants, engineers, scientists with PhD’s, doctors—and they all offer different perspectives. We have group projects in almost every course, and we are very open and honest about our opinions because we want to get to the best ideas. It’s a team effort, and the diversity is part of what makes us successful.

Sophia Kang, Evening MBA Chicago Booth has made me more self-aware, which is a big part of leadership. In the Effective Leadership program, the personality assessment taught me a lot about how I work in a team and interact with others. I’ve been able to use what I learned and apply it at work. I’m more active in meetings, I’m more aware of how and why I make decisions, and I’m better at managing conflict. I’m also building leadership skills as the marketing chair for the Philanthropy Group. It’s a young club, so we’ve spent the last year figuring out what the students want from us and what kinds of activities and events to offer. So far we’ve partnered with an organization to collect and deliver winter kits to Chicago’s homeless, hosted a panel of nonprofit board members, and organized the Nonprofit Fair, which brought 34 organizations to campus for networking. Our goal is to get the students more involved with the community.

I’m definitely building a network here. There are a ton of events and clubs you can join, and people are really friendly. Before I came to Chicago, most of the people I knew were in the trading industry. Now I know people in manufacturing, real estate, consulting—and knowing people in all these industries will be helpful as I move forward. Multiple times a week, the school hosts something for students to network. You can show up by yourself and easily find people to talk to. I’ve also heard some impressive speakers, like at the Road to CEO series, started by Charles M. Harper, who was head of ConAgra. He spoke with two other alumni CEOs. They were very different people, but you could tell they’re CEOs for a reason: they love what they do and they put their hearts and souls into their companies. It was a good reminder that if we do what we really love, good things will come out of it.

Jacob Fenton, Evening MBA As a commercial real estate agent, I essentially run my own business. Chicago Booth has taught me how to balance my time between work and school and manage my responsibilities more effectively. I’m also co-chair of the Real Estate Club, which includes evening, weekend, and full-time students. I’ve been responsible for recruiting members, planning events, and creating a real estate mentorship program. Our primary goal is to grow the real estate brand at Chicago Booth. I’m happy to do it for the leadership experience, but also because I believe the work we do will benefit future students at Booth.

Nearly every quarter, I’ve taken one quantitative class and one “softer” class, and I’ve found this mix to be very beneficial. Managerial Decision Making is a business class with ties to psychology. I’ve always been interested in how to influence others and the class has crystallized many important concepts that I try to use in my job. I also took Leadership in Organizations with Howard Haas and Linda Ginzel. Haas is a seasoned veteran—he was CEO of Sealy Mattress

Company—and Ginzel is a social psychologist; together, they offer a rich perspective. It was my first quarter, so most of my classmates had been at Booth longer, and I learned a lot from them as well. The network I’m developing here is directly applicable to my work. It’s one of the things I like most about the parttime program—everyone is working, is genuinely interested in what their classmates are doing, and wants to establish connections that will last beyond the program. My business is developing relationships, and I’m using my experience at Booth as a platform to do just that.

I’m more cognizant now of how I’m running my business. I’m approaching problems in a more analytical way, and I feel a lot more confident about the decisions I make, both in my professional and personal life.

Katie Forristall, Evening MBA I work in business, but a lot of my focus has also been on philanthropy, and I may want to work at a nonprofit down the line. Chicago Booth is helping me on both fronts. I love being able to use what I’m learning at my job. I recently transitioned to a new position in my firm, which I might not have explored before taking a few classes here and identifying finance and strategy as interests. The tools I’ve learned here have not only been useful in doing the forecasting and scenario planning I need to do in my job, they’ve also given me the big picture. I see how everything fits together. For the long term, being a leader in the Philanthropy Club has helped me learn what it takes to run a nonprofit and which contacts and skills I will need. I’ve also met a lot of cool people and learned about a lot of Chicago nonprofits. I volunteer with Horizons for Youth and I’ve made connections and partnerships that may benefit that group. Children’s welfare, literacy, and education are really important to me. I also run a book club at a bookstore that supports women’s literacy, so those are some of the things I’m drawn to.

The flexible curriculum has given me a chance to apply what I’m learning. I’m able to take a broad spectrum of classes, and it’s great that we get so many electives. I’m interested in a social entrepreneurship class, and I plan to take a couple of courses at the university’s Harris School of Public Policy Studies. I think it’s really cool to be able to take classes like that in addition to being around so many great financial and economic minds. Since coming to Booth, I have outperformed my expectations, and it’s made me more willing to take risks and take the more challenging classes. I’ve learned an enormous amount in the process.

Two years ago if you asked me if I wanted to move up in my company, I’d have said, “Sure, but there’s no way I’ll be able to.” Now I know I can do anything if I work hard.

Jake Varghese, Weekend MBA I immediately apply everything I learn in class to my job. It’s not just theory— it’s application. For instance, Marketing Strategy is directly relevant when I’m bringing a set of offerings to the market. I’m utilizing frameworks to think through real problems, and by doing so, I internalize what I learned for the long term. I plan to run my own technology company. Right now, I’m looking for future business partners—my CFO, my COO. I’ve been impressed with the quality of the Booth network. I now know people I wouldn’t have met had I stayed on the west coast—people at Caterpillar, Procter & Gamble, Kirkland & Ellis, comScore, all the Chicago banks, all the national and global banks—an amazing set of people. They all think so differently that being around them has improved the way I think.

The entrepreneurship program here is brilliant. It’s very well staged, so there’s a class on how to identify a new venture, then a class about how to actually get it off the ground—the first 18 months are the pivotal time that could make or break you. On the investor side, there are great classes about entrepreneurial finance, venture capital, and private equity. I’m taking them all and applying what I learn directly to my own venture. LEARN MORE

Concentrations Concentrations allow you to emphasize one or more disciplines or fields of study to enhance or complement your experience and fit your interests and goals. Three to ten courses are required to fulfill a concentration in one of the following areas: Accounting We study both financial and managerial accounting, integrating finance, economics, organizational behavior, strategy, and production. You’ll learn to measure a firm’s financial performance in order to evaluate and make business decisions. Analytic Finance We offer the largest number of advanced finance classes of any business school, focusing on cutting-edge analysis for the quantitative tools you’ll need to create innovative solutions to real financial issues. Analytic Management Companies are increasingly applying quantitative analysis when developing competitive strategies. We apply our unique approach to quantitative and statistical analysis for decision making in a variety of managerial contexts. Econometrics and Statistics We have a long history of asking for proof to support an idea. This field focuses on identifying important information and quantifying answers to increase certainty and confidence in your decisions. Economics We use micro- and macroeconomic concepts—many pioneered at the University of Chicago—as powerful tools to understand society and maximize well-being. General Management This concentration covers the core responsibilities of general managers, and courses in strategic management or managerial and organizational behavior add to your leadership skills. Human Resource Management Studying how to use economics and strategy to harness the value of human resources in production, you will gain the frameworks needed to make effective management decisions. International Business Utilizing a broad range of micro- and macroeconomic topics, you’ll gain a critical understanding of the global economic environment in which businesses operate and the role of economic agents in that environment. Managerial and Organizational Behavior Combining theory and research from cognitive and social psychology, sociology, and economics, courses study human behavior in a range of managerial contexts. A team of students works closely with a faculty member and reports to a senior executive at the sponsoring firm. Entrepreneurial Labs The Polsky Center for Entrepreneurship offers several lab courses presenting students with the opportunity to work on actual new ventures, evaluate business plans as investors, intern with private equity and venture capital firms, and aid nonprofit and social ventures. In an international lab, students are able to travel to China. Competitions Chicago Booth students are a fixture on the business competition circuit. Research Centers Chicago Booth is famous for groundbreaking research, a great deal of which is conducted under the auspices of our research centers, which in turn are a draw for recruiting top faculty. Accounting Research Center This center coordinates the accounting activities at Chicago Booth and integrates various fields of knowledge across accounting and management. It also publishes the Journal of Accounting Research and sponsors an annual conference. Becker Center on Chicago Price Theory Founded by Richard O. Ryan, ’66, this interdisciplinary center supports research examining the role prices play in the fundamental functions of an economic system and on human behavior. George J. Career Services We help students through each phase of career development: assess themselves and the market; plan and prepare for a career transition; and implement their career plan. Assess

Prepare

Career Services assists students, individually and in groups, with assessing their values, goals, and career interests, which helps them to successfully differentiate themselves.

Career Management Programming Career Services offers group and individual assistance with creating compelling resumes and job search correspondence. Workshops and coaching on how to craft a transitional story, network, and interview effectively also are available. A mock interviewing program and mock networking reception allow students to develop skills in these areas in a nonthreatening environment.

Fisher Career Resource Center (CRC) The Career Resource Center is the hub for career and job-related research at Chicago Booth. The Fisher CRC, located at Gleacher Center, is primarily a virtual collection, emphasizing electronic resources. Computer stations provide access to a wealth of online databases featuring company information, job leads, industry data, and compensation surveys.

Plan Industry Knowledge During Industry Immersion, Chicago Booth alumni and corporate friends return to campus as experienced marketers, consultants, bankers, investment managers, and strategic planners to introduce a variety of industry and/or functional overviews. Career Services also co-sponsors many other events to assist students with gaining industry knowledge, including panels with company representatives, educational workshops on various industries, and conferences. Networking Students and alumni can use the online Chicago Booth Community Directory to research and contact fellow alumni and students in various functions and industries. The directory is an excellent tool to begin conducting informational interviews and to network with professionals in fields and roles of interest. CareerCast Through the CareerCast podcast series, students and alumni can hear experts discuss such topics as making an industry or functional career change, managing employees, crafting one’s story, and taking the entrepreneurial plunge. CareerCast also features success stories of Chicago Booth students and alumni. 52

Implement Job Postings Career Services is actively engaged in employer outreach and development. Thousands of jobs from firms are posted annually—jobs that span a wide variety of functions, industries, levels, and geographies. In addition to postings from companies that recruit from Chicago Booth, Career Services posts searchfirm listings for more senior positions. Students can elect to have both full-time postings and search-firm postings emailed directly to them. Chicago Booth Select Search Evening MBA and Weekend MBA students who have completed two quarters at Chicago Booth are eligible to participate in Chicago Booth Select Search, an online resume database service. Chicago Booth Select Search is made available to recruiters seeking experienced MBA talent from Chicago Booth. Currently more than 800 employers use Chicago Booth Select Search for their hiring needs. On-Campus Recruiting Eligible Evening MBA and Weekend MBA students can participate in recruiting presentations and interviews for full-time positions with top-tier companies in banking, consulting, investment management, and consumer packaged goods, for example.

Apply The Evening MBA Program matriculates approximately 450 students each year. The Weekend MBA Program matriculates approximately 100 students each year. The Admissions Committee looks for evidence of an applicant’s potential to succeed in a demanding academic program of study and a professional career after graduation. In addition to previous educational experiences, test scores, and recommendation letters, we consider essays and interview reports to learn about an applicant’s activities, goals, and interest in attending our program.
