BUILDING

ON

THE

MOUNTAINS

When asking to an alpinist or a mountaneer what are the reasons that bring her or him to climb a mountain, the answers can be multiple. For many people it constitutes a personal chellenge, an adventure, an exciting trip. For others the motivation comes from the strong emotions that such experience produces as: freedom, peace or fear. However the contemplation of the beauty and the majesty of the mountains is what joins all of them.

Due to its extreme location the Hocwhildehaus is not connected to the grid. This demands the building to be energy self sufficient. For this reason the new project for the Hochwildehaus is equipped with a Photovoltaic system that produces the amount of electricity necessary for the operation of the whole building. Radiant panels in the walls and solar air collectors are the main source of heating. A CPH burner that runs with natural oil (rapeseed) is used as backup system.

RETROFITTING

IN

DOWNTOWN

ROME

The BNP-Paribas bank group commissioned M28 Architects, for whom I worked as a collaborator, to realize a series of renovation projects for the interiors of its bank offices. The firm prepared different designs to renew and improve over twenty different buildings. Since the structures are located in some of the most beautiful and ancient areas of Rome downtown the challenge was to design interventions in which the new technologies could cohexist with the older parts. The studio prepared the plans and followed all the construction phases.

GREEN

ALLEY

DEMONSTRATION

PROJECT

The Alley Flat Initiative is a joint collaboration between the University of Texas Center for Sustainable Development (UTCSD), the Guadalupe Neighborhood Development Corporation (GNDC), and the Austin Community Design and Development Center (ACDDC). The Alley Flat Initiative proposes a new sustainable, green affordable housing alternative for Austin. “Alley Flats” are small, detached residential units, accessed from Austin’s extensive network of underutilized alleyways. In this project a whole alley between Waller St. and 8th St. (East Austin) was redesigned. Bioswales, rain gardens and other sustainable features were introduced in the design.

PROJECT

Together with providing suggestions for the rehabilitation of the whole alley we observed the various lots in the East Austin neighborhood to identify possible infill opportunities. The project realized between Lydia St. and 8th St. is a residential unit for 5 people. Affordability and sustainability were the principles that guided the whole design process. The participation of the neighobors and the feedback from the community were extremely valuable elements determining this design. Ecotect and EQUEST software were used to produce energy simulation of the thermal conditions and to measure the energy consumption of the building.

SAN

MARTINO

AL

CIMINO

San Martino al Cimino is a medieval town 60 km far from Rome. The village developed aound a cistercian abbey and even if it was readapted in the XVII century, it still conserves the old urban structure. The village was residence of the Pamphilij family (Pope Innocent X) that engaged an extensive action of renovation. Borromini was appointed to do most of the architectural interventions. 17

Construction techniques and materials Scketches

An important part of the project was the production of a series of measurments and buildings’ surveys. The urban tissue together with the construction techniques and the local materials were identified, analyzed, and studied with the intent of reproposing renovation interventions that where functional and at the same time respectful towards the original characters of the site.

THE

OLD

LAVATORY

BUILDING

For my final thesis I worked on an old lavatory building located close to the Pamphilij palace. The building currently hosts a restaurant but it presents an unfinished facade. The goal of my project was to restore this facade as well as the interiors. Moreover I reactivated the state of the lavatory space in the basement which was abandoned . 21

NEW

VANITY

FOR

SABRINA

As birthday present I decided to restyle an old vanity for my friend Sabrina. She bought this piece of furniture from a flea market in LA. With a little work I was able to transform that abandoned vanity into a very colorful piece that she now loves. As a first step I scraped the whole surface to remove the old paint (it was an horrible rusty tone of red). After sanding and cleaning the surface I applied a quick-drying primer to protect the wood. Then I painted the vanity using a matte white for the outside areas and a mix of fluo colors for the interior of the drawers. Finally I finished it with another protective transparent layer. It was a lot of work and a lot of fun. 23

&

MATCH.SETTER.ME

When I am not busy with architecture projects I like to do designs for other things like websites and apps. The template for Sunberry Juices design was prepared with Artesteer software and then imported into Wordpress. I created most of the images and the fruit compositions. Match.setter.me is the product of 3Day Startup and event that gathers UT students who team up during an intense weekend to create new startups. Together with other five temmates I developed the idea of a smartphone app to match tennis players for pick-up games. In particular I curated the logo and all the visual content. The app is currently in development.

MINNEAPOLIS

DOWNTOWN

EAST

Downtown East is full of potential to become a vibrant community. The new Vikings Stadium, at the heart of the district, is too valuable to sit unused 44 weekends a year. It can become a showcase of the pride, community, and excitement of Minneapolis. H.E.R.O. pulls the stadium into the fold of downtown to create a unique community that capitalizes on health awareness, education, recreation destinations, and unique outdoor experiences, with easy access to all that Minneapolis has to offer. By actively involving residents to establish the character of the neighborhood, the design empowers Minneapolitans to become heroes of Downtown East.

THE

CITY

OF

GUIDONIA

In the Urban Planning Office I worked with a group of technicians and architects on a recovery project of ample areas in the city plan that had been impacted by numerous constructions in infringement of local building regulations. Moreover, I became acquainted with geographic information system (GIS) software used to produce an interactive map, which was later published in public access on the city’s official website. 33

OF

SANTA

LUCE

The ancient church was built in the 12th century in the neighborhood of Trastevere. In 1730 Valvassori reconstructed the interiors but the facade remained unfinished. For this project we were asked to survey and study old maps and drawings to better understand the nature of the interiors and the characteristics of the spaces. he goal was to propose a finishing design for the currently missing facade and for the cupola. Materials and construction techniques were analyzed and studied. This was helpful to propose design solutions that could be properly integrated with the existing ancient fabric . 35
