WELCOME TO JUST HOCKEY 2019 2019 shapes up as a crucial year in the development of hockey in New Zealand and around the world! The Hockey Pro League hits off late January and puts the Black Sticks men and women against eight other top teams from all around the world. The format is home and away test matches and New Zealand’s participation roars into action with a home test against the Netherlands on 27 January at North Harbour. The tournament spans the first six months of the year and dominates the international sports calendar. Domestically some of the biggest changes we will see comes with the added facilities that are popping up around the country. Christchurch adds a truly international standard facility at Nga Puna Wai – which debuts with Pro League weekends in February. At the end of 2019 the National Hockey Centre in Albany will be open – just in time for the 2020 Pro League. STICK SIZING ADVICE Our expert and friendly team are always able to size you up for a stick if you come in store. If buying online, please follow the advice below:
Children
We recommend that children have a stick that is sized to promote the development of good technique – especially when dribbling the ball. If a stick to too long then they will carry the ball too far away from their body, leading to weakness on the ball and in tackle situations. A good rule of thumb for a child’s stick is to measure in inches from one inch below the belly button down to the floor (standing in a normal posture). Our sticks range in size from 24 to 35.5 inches.
STICK CARE
Youth / Young Adult
For a youth age player a 36 or 36.5 inch stick is recommended due to the fact that their upper body strength is still developing.
Adults
The choice between a 36.5, 37.5 or 38.5 inch stick really comes down to the customer’s personal preference. The majority will opt for a 36.5 or 37.5 inch stick.
Look after your stick and enjoy the game
Hockey is a high impact sport and your stick will suffer wear and tear in the course of play. Your stick is probably the most expensive piece of kit you own so look after it and it’ll look after you. If you follow the basic steps below your stick will last longer and perform better.
Repair & Maintenance
All sticks wear with use – especially the head of the stick. If wear is left unchecked, it can lead to further head wearing problems. Excellent stick repair kits are available. Follow the instructions with frequent applications being the key to effective use. Small layers will act as a protective pad therefore reducing wear to the head of the stick.
Shaft Guard
Shaft guard will prevent chipping and cracking on the shaft and edges. It is clear, strong and adhesive, and works very well.
Breakages
We offer a 30 day manufacturer guarantee. Manufacturers will only replace sticks that are clearly faulty from a manufacturing problem and have failed in early usage. Generally, problems occur in the first few weeks. Wear to the head is not part of the warranty as it is an inescapable part of the modern game on synthetic surfaces. Manufacturers will not exchange for wearing of the head, breakages from stick clashes or sticks that have been well used.
