There is so much to look forward to – shopping for treats for all family and friends; helping the children write their letters to Santa; days out to special events; as well as all the glittering parties and meals out. Cosy nights in by the fire spent writing Christmas cards and catching up with old friends; sorting out the decorations; finding the perfect tree and making sure you get it home in one piece; enjoying the listening to the carollers who knock at the door. Eat, drink and relax

E

at, drink and be merry is the enduring theme of Christmas – but sometimes making sure that everyone else has a great time can stop you from enjoying this special time.

Deciding to celebrate with a party for family and friends, or even inviting everyone for Christmas lunch, can seem like a great idea – but as the festive season draws nigh trying to make everything perfect can leave you feeling very stressed out. That’s why a lot of people decide to put their celebrations in the hands of the experts. And in this region we are blessed with a variety of hotels, pubs and restaurants all offering fabulous Christmas packages. Whether you are planning a party for workmates, a celebratory meal or even Christmas lunch – there is a huge selection of venues to choose from. If you decide to eat out before Christmas, choose the date, pick the restaurant and book as early as you can. You don’t want to be disappointed by finding that the

date you wanted is booked to capacity. When it comes to choosing a venue for Christmas Day decide whether you want to eat at a hotel or a restuarant, take a look at the menus beforehand and see what is on offer. Some people may not want a traditional Christmas lunch of turkey and all the trimmings so see what the alternatives are. Ask if they cater for children and if vegetarian options are available. There is a lot to consider – but for a lot of people enjoying Christmas lunch in a restaurant adds to the festive experience. Decide whether it is a busy atmosphere you are after, or a more intimate, cosy setting. Many restaurants now provide entertainment to keep youngsters absorbed while they are waiting for their meals to arrive. This gives the adults the opportunity to relax and look forward to a stress-free meal. And once the meal is over and everyone is sitting back relaxing, there is an added bonus – no washing up! You can simply go home and enjoy the rest of this special day after this perfect Christmas treat.

Christmas Fayre

We’d rather not do it ourselves IF you are planning your Christmas get-together for family and friends and are worrying over the finer details, you are certainly not alone.

Throughout the country an estimated 42 million festive get-togethers are being planned – with some brave souls planning to invite up to 30 people. While we love the thought of getting together to share the Christmas experience, party planning can be very stressful and it can take up to 24 hours to arrange an event. Research conducted on behalf of Jacob’s Creek Blanc de Blancs, revealed that we spend a combined total of nine million hours cleaning and tidying our homes, preparing food and drink and getting ourselves glammed up when hosting a get-together. Just under a third of women (31%) take a whole day to get ready, while nearly one in five (19%) take more than one day to do all their Christmas party

preparations. More than two-thirds (67%) of women say they find planning parties stressful. Getting ready and looking glamorous (48%) is top of our worry list when planning to throw a party, followed by choosing the entertainment (47%), fretting about people turning up (45%), getting our homes spick and span (28%), having enough time to prepare the food and drink (28%) and coming up with an enticing menu (28%). When asked what would make their get-togethers more special, more than half of women (57%) said having waiters on hand to serve drinks to their guests would be the ultimate treat, followed by entertainment (54%) and having a new outfit to dazzle in (48%). And to help take the stress out of hosting a party, women would most like someone to help get their house clean and sparkling for when their guests arrive (40%), followed by a helping hand from a chef (35%).

veryone has a different idea about what makes the perfect Christmas celebration.

For some it is a chance to catch up with friends over a quiet meal in a rural restaurant. For others it is a wild party with blaring music and an all-night bar. So, if you have volunteered to be this year’s party organiser, how can you possibly get the balance right? Before you fly into a blind panic, take a deep breath and make sure that this year you make the festive season as stress-free as possible. The key to a chilled out Christmas is organisation. You can never start planning too early and this is certainly true when it comes to organising going out over the festive period. Whether you are planning a huge family reunion or an intimate gathering of close family and friends, it is best to start as soon as possible, as all the good venues tend to get booked up early. First of all, have a think about what kind of event you are plan-

ning. Know your audience and make sure that the party is appropriate to the people attending. Your idea of a great night out might be a wild night of clubbing but if you are meant to be catering for Great Aunt Maud then something a little more sedate might be a better idea. Next, do your research. Check out as many potential venues as you can and where possible, visit them in person to get a feel for the atmosphere and the service. See if they offer any deals for people who want to stay over. Discuss party arrangements with the venue of your choice and make sure that it is clear what is being provided. Is the venue providing food? If so, for how many people? Is there any entertainment on offer? How should the evening be paid for? These are all important details you need to get ironed out so you can make an informed choice. Finally, having organised the party in plenty of time, you can sit back, relax and look forward to an evening to remember!

PLAN AHEAD: Planning is the key to the ideal Christmas party.

Don’t leave anything Enjoy a luxurious to chance at partytime spa experience Advertiser’s announcement

LIFE’S little luxuries don’t come around too often but we all like to be spoilt and pampered once in a while. Spa days were once the preserve of the rich and often meant travelling half way across the country for a luxurious treatment. But you can get all this – and more – so

T

he most seemingly effortless celebration is usually the one that has been planned with military precision.

So if you have an event to prepare for don’t leave anything to chance – you have to think of every detail to ensure the celebration runs smoothly. Buy yourself a clipboard, make a list and don’t be afraid to ask for help. People are usually thrilled to be asked to get involved. Do give yourself enough time to plan the party properly – booking a venue as early as possible is the best idea. Do stick to your budget and remember that unless you are generously paying for the whole event yourself, you have to take into account other people’s budgets too.

much closer to home. Rowton Hall Spa, just outside Chester, is an experience definitely recommended. Apart from luxurious treatment rooms there is a fully-equipped gym, swimming pool, sauna, Jacuzzi and steam room. So, if you are looking for something a little bit special, a spa day at Rowton Hall makes a perfect gift.

Do ask around before booking anything to gauge what people really want to do. You might really fancy a curry for a change but everyone else might be expecting something more traditional. You might want to plan around a theme or ask people to turn up in fancy dress. Do take a camera to preserve the evening for posterity and to make sure you get to take maximum credit for the event’s success. Don’t leave it too late to let everyone know the arrangements for the event and to help things run even more smoothly, it might be worth helping people out with travel to and from the event. Ordering a mini-bus or taxis to and from the event will prevent people from being tempted to drink and drive. You want everyone to remember the evening for all the right reasons.

Hair to take you from desk to dance floor T

he party season is upon us and revamping your tresses is the easiest way to transform a look, when you have a five minute makeover window on your hands.

GO GLAM: Up do style by Hair Tools (www.hairtools.co.uk).

This season, glamorous up-dos are where it’s at. From chic buns and dishevelled top knots to slicked-back twists, there’s a style to suit everyone. “Up hair adds an element of glamour,” says celebrity hairdresser Mark Hill. And the good news for hair styling phobics is it doesn’t need to look ‘done’ to dazzle. “There’s no over-structure to the looks this year so it really doesn’t matter if it appears messy,” explains Hill. “The more undone, the better it looks, as long as it isn’t actually falling down!” Whether you work an up or down look, there’s a styling saviour to take you from hair hell to party perfect. You don’t need the dexterity of Edward Scissorhands to perfect an up-do. Feign hairdressing prowess by putting your hair up and add a glamorous twist to your party ensemble. Heads will turn, especially if you usually wear your hair loose. “It’s all about dishevelled chignons for the party season,” Hill says. “The emphasis is shabby chic with lots

By Lisa Haynes

of hair dropping out, especially around the hairline.” “You basically take a high ponytail on the crown of the head, twist the hair round, and let it splay open, securing with grips.” “We often rub a balloon over the top of the head afterwards to get that mussedup look.” If you don’t want to waste precious party time dawdling with grips and clips, add Christmas cheer to dull, greasy locks with instant quick fixes. Make your head the centre of attention without the shampoo ad hair, via statement accessories. “Hair bands are a great party accessory and work if your hair is short or long,” advises hair colour expert, Lisa Shepherd. “Create an evening look by back-combing your crown area and sitting the band just in front.” The back-comb technique is key to reviving lifeless hair. Try refreshing a bland ponytail by back-combing your fringe, or front section if you’re fringeless, and pinning it back into a cool quiff. If the wash-and-go technique has well and truly escaped you due to a hectic

party schedule, work with the grease rather than against it. Shepherd says: “Disguise grease with a glossy shiny gel and slick your hair back, tucking it behind your ears – this is perfect for those with a bob.” If you regularly have to jazz up dull 9-5 office hair in record time, then Nick Malenko from Royston Blythe at The Dorchester recommends dedicating a desk drawer to ready-to-roll hair tools. Here are his hairstyle saviour musthaves: “The absolute essential product for any occasion is dry shampoo,” Malenko says. “It not only refreshes and hides grease but also gives great root lift, body and oomph. “Curling tongs or straighteners are helpful tools for a quickie do. Cordless are not necessarily as effective as plug-in electrical products, but ideal for a quick refresh or to add a flick or curl at the end of a ponytail,” he advises.

hristmas is fast approaching and if you have a teenage child (or niece or grandson) you’re probably already racking your brains about what to get.

ON BOARD: There is a great range of stocking fillers for teenagers this Christmas. Picture courtesy of Tesco

A tricky task for any festive shopper, picking a ‘trendy’ or ‘cool’ gift is never easy. And it only takes one false turn in the shopping aisle to get it wrong. So if you don’t want to be forever remembered for that lavender gift set or dodgy-patterned hat, think before you buy! Thankfully there is a great selection of gifts in the shops this Christmas and for teen girls you’ll be spoilt for choice. Most girls love a new pair of fluffy slippers and pyjamas as well as jewellery and DVDs. Or perhaps your daughter’s a budding beauty queen? If so, she’ll no doubt love a make-up set or funky new hair dryer. A fancy box of chocolates (guaranteed to make them feel more grown-up) is always a winner and

for older teens a trendy new handbag, mobile phone, perfume gift set, mp3 cover or even a vintagestyle cupcake making kit will win you instant kudos. Likewise, there is a great selection of gifts for teenage boys too. The usual deodorant sets, hats, scarves, socks and latest CDs make great stocking fillers. And for gadget lovers you can’t beat a remote controlled car or racing ‘granny’ set for Christmas Day entertainment. Alternatively, if you can afford to push the boat out, why not treat them to a state-of-the-art mp3 player, stylish speaker system or games console? For sportsmad lads you could even get their favourite football team’s shirt or some mini-goal posts to practice their penalties in the back garden? Whatever you choose, you’re sure to raise a few smiles and make sure that the magic of Christmas will never go – no matter how old they are.

Save as you splurge P

resents, food, decoration, entertaining – it all adds up. And while most of us love the festivities of Christmas, the extra cost can cause headaches.

Money expert Andrew Hagger of moneynet.co.uk advises setting a budget and sticking to it – that way you’ll have everything you need without the stress of overloaded credit cards once January rolls in. “It might sound like a horrible task, but making a budget plan is actually quite easy,” says Hagger. “Just decide what you’re going to buy, make a list and stick to it. “Don’t be tempted by those goodies on offer, that sale rack you’re walking past or the tasty little treats at the check-out. And don’t try to keep up with the neighbours, either. You’ll only end up spending too much.” Ask yourself how big the turkey really needs to be. You just need enough to feed the family and friends around your Christmas table, with a little left over for sandwiches on Boxing Day. “Don’t go mad with luxury range Christmas items such as puds,” advises Hagger. “People won’t be that bothered, if they don’t see the wrapper.” It’s worth keeping an eye out for special offers and stocking up as and when you see the deals. Go shopping with a friend for things like big tins of chocolates. They’re often on ‘buy one get one free’ offers so you

It’s the most expensive time of year, which can really dampen those festive spirits. Follow these expert tips to enjoy a credit crunch-friendly Christmas

By Hannah Stephenson can split the cost and share the savings. It’s a good idea to buy wine in bulk as well. Lots of supermarkets offer extra discount if you buy six bottles. You can also print off discount food vouchers. Just log on to the website www.myvouchercodes.co.uk to save extra money – and don’t be afraid to ask anyone joining you for lunch to be in charge of one part of the meal. They’ll enjoy feeling like they’ve helped. For older children, splash out on a board game. It’ll keep the whole family entertained on Christmas Day. And if that Christmas card list is making you feel guilty, send e-cards instead. It’s more eco-friendly and you’ll save money on cards and stamps. Or, alternatively, you could get the children involved in making some. It’s also worth taking advantage of the three-for-two deals on offer in many shops. The larger stores have an enormous range suitable for the whole family – you’ll be amazed how the savings can add up.

“Speak to friends and relatives and agree a limit as to how much you’re going to spend on each other and each other’s children,” says Hagger. “If you have a big family, maybe only buy for the children – adults aren’t going to mind when money’s tight. “You can save even more by making your own presents – and friends and family will love the personal touch.” Try knitting a scarf, cook or bake something delicious and tie it up with a beautiful bow, or ask one of the children to paint a masterpiece and have it framed. Be economic with energy. You may have splashed out on festive outdoor lights – but you don’t need to leave them on all night. Just a couple of hours in the evening will do, to get everyone in the mood. Inside, replace regular lights with energy saving ones. LED lights use less energy than conventional Christmas ones. Try not to let your heating bill blow the budget: “Turn your thermostat down by one degree,” Hagger suggests. “It may not sound like much but could cut your heating bills by up to 10%.”

Avoid costly mistakes MAC Tompsett of Colour Me Beautiful, offers positive advice to ensure we get value for money and that what we buy is actually worn. In a recession we tend to buy more neutrals, which this season are camel, grey, navy and black. They can be dressed up with colour. Camel can look sophisticated and luxurious, if your colouring is light or warm. Ladies with bluish-pink skin tones, silver or ash

hair could focus on shades of grey from silver to charcoal. Navy is smart and can be mixed. Try bright reds, orange and yellow or soft greens and blues – depending on your colouring. Minimalism is a feature of the season’s clothes. For this look ensure makeup is too. Not nude but natural lips. ● Avoid expensive mistakes. Call Mac on 01978 852816 for a consultation.

Vanish those veins VANISH Veins, in conjunction with Nationwide Surgical, provides treatment for all vein problems. Established by consultant vascular surgeon Professor Paul Edwards, it was the first to introduce these innovative methods for vein treatment to Chester. To celebrate, packages of treatment are on offer at competitive rates, with a free consultation. Varicose veins can be treated using techniques avoiding general (full) anaesthesia, with patients walking out of the clinic after treatment. These include laser treatment (EVLT) and foam sclerotherapy. Latest techniques include radiofrequency options (VNUS). Having introduced these techniques regionally, Prof Edwards has gained significant experience of them over the past few years and works in conjunction with nationwide surgical centres and an international laser company, offering treatments with state of the art equipment. ● Brochures with comprehensive details of treatment and prices are available.

BELLES of Chester offers a wide range of beautiful dresses to buy or hire at prices which are hard to beat. Belles specialises in amazing designer prom dresses, ball gowns and evening wear. Dresses in stock are also perfect for awards dinners, book launches or corporate events – or you can buy online. Some of the elegant gowns

Belles works on an appointment-only basis, seven days a week – including evenings. Call 01244 348889 to book. ● Visit www.bellesofchester.co. uk to buy online. All in the preparation WOMEN spend more than 500 hours preparing for Christmas, according to research by the Clothes Show Live. The survey also reveals that the average Christmas stocking contains 32% of clothes; 23% beauty products; 18% chocolate; 17% gadgets; and 10% other Christmas goodies.

In a comprehensive national survey of more than 3,000 women, Clothes Show Live, which this year takes place at the Birmingham NEC, on December 3-8. reveals that the most sought-after gifts on a woman’s Christmas list this year are clothes while men are hoping for the latest games console.

A one-stop-shop for Christmas CHRISTMAS wouldn’t be Christmas without Chester’s Forum Shopping Centre, the city’s premier value-formoney shopping destination which has a mission to give shoppers much more for their hard-earned cash. In fact, the Northgate Street retail development has accumulated so much support from the region’s costconscious shopping public that every unit inside the complex is open for business. “We are fortunate enough to have an army of loyal customers who know their money will always go that bit further at the Forum,” said centre manager Lawrence Allen. “That is why we have such a mix of retail outlets – from a major department store to a busy supermarket and from a popular bakery to an independent florist. “And it’s at this time of the year that the Forum really comes into its own –

Advertiser’s announcement as a one-stop shop for Christmas gifts, at affordable prices.” New arrivals at the centre include Guardian Jewellery, BIG music and DVD specialists and fashion store First Avenue. They sit alongside long established Forum names including T.J. Hughes, McDonald’s and Greggs Bakery. “Whether you want fashion to health products, a coffee or a snack or whether you need to top-up on pharmaceuticals at Boots, the Forum has it all,” added Mr Allen. A reputation for friendly and helpful shop staff, seven day opening and its convenient proximity to the city bus station and car parks, always ensures the Forum is packed with both retailers and customers.
