Back To School 2017 A Few Tips On How To Get Back Into The School Routine •Ease back into a routine. As a new school year dawns or a long vacation comes to an end, begin going to bed earlier and start waking up earlier as well. This can make the transition from carefree mornings to busy mornings go more smoothly. •Prep backpacks in the evening. Look through folders, sign paperwork, check assignments, and do whatever is you need to do the night before to save your family from having to scramble in the morning. This ensures those permission slips get signed and items make it back into school bags. •Opt for school lunch a few times. Look ahead on the school lunch menu and speak with children about which meals they enjoy. Let kids purchase school

any families find the rush is on to make it to school and work on time each morning. Feeling rushed in the morning is a recipe for added stress. Rushing through things is a poor way to begin a day, and those feelings of uneasiness can put a damper on the rest of the day ahead. Making mornings less hectic involves a few different strategies

that parents and kids can easily incorporate into their daily routines. •Wake up slightly earlier. Getting up earlier than normal, even if it’s just 15 to 20 minutes before you’re accustomed to getting out of bed, can help reduce morning stress. Resist the temptation to hit the snooze button over and over again. A few extra minutes each

morning can make you feel more relaxed and make for a smooth, stress-free start to the day. •Get some work done the night before. Prepare lunches the night before and have them ready in the refrigerator. In addition, lay your clothes for the following day out each night. This saves time and takes a couple more things off your morning to-do list.

lunch on those days to give yourself a day off from lunch detail. •Have quick breakfast foods available. Smoothies, cereal bars, oatmeal, and whole-grain cereals are fast and nutritious ways to start the day. •Carpool whenever possible. Busy families can save themselves extra work by proposing a neighborhood carpool. Sharing school dropoff detail frees time up for parents once or twice a week, and kids may enjoy traveling to school with their friends. Mornings can be tricky when family members are getting ready for school and work at the same time. By practicing a few daily rituals, it’s possible to curb the rush and start the day happier and more relaxed.

Avoid Catching That Classroom Cold S

chool-aged kids who catch colds or the flu from their classmates can quickly spread those colds to their family members, who then might spread the colds further when they go to work. Preventing the spread of colds and flu at school is a team effort that requires the assistance of not just parents, but also teachers and students. Still, parents might be the first line of defense when it comes to preventing the spread of cold and flu at school. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 38 million school days are lost to the flu each year. Those lost days can affect students who miss lesson plans, but also affect parents, who often must take days off from work to tend to their sick children. While there’s no way for parents to guarantee their children won’t catch a cold or the flu this school year, they can take various preventive measures to increase kids’ chances of staying healthy and achieving perfect attendance. • Make sure kids are immunized and that their immunizations are current. Vaccinations bolster kids immune systems. That’s important, as kids’ immune systems are naturally less mature than adults’, making them more vulnerable to germs and viruses. The CDC recommends that adults and children receive their flu vaccinations in October while noting that such vaccinations can be administered as late as January and still prove effective. The CDC also recommends that adults and children receive flu vaccinations each year. Additional vaccinations may not need to be administered as often,

but parents should still ensure kids’ are up-to-date with their shots. • Make sure kids regularly wash their hands. Kids often catch colds by rubbing their hands that have been exposed to cold virus germs on their noses or eyes. To prevent that, parents can teach kids to wash to their hands thoroughly, including scrubbing the backs of their hands, between their fingers and around their fingernails. Kids should know to wash their hands regularly, but especially after they use the bathroom and before they eat, drink or touch their mouths, noses or eyes. • Keep kids home when they are sick. Parents don’t want their children to miss school, but kids who are suffering from colds or flu should be kept home. This prevents the spread of colds and flu to classmates and teachers, and time to rest at home may help youngsters recover more quickly. • Teach kids to avoid common germ spots. Germs can be lurking anywhere, but some spots seem to See REDUCE, page 7

Back To School 2017 Town Again Offering Eligible Students Free/Reduced Lunch T

he Cheshire Public Schools has announced its policy for determining eligibility of children who may receive free or reduced-price meals served under the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) and School Breakfast Program (SBP). Local school officials have adopted the United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Income Eligibility Guidelines (IEGs) for family size and income criteria for determining eligibility. The income guidelines (see table on right) will be used in Connecticut from July 1, 2017 to June 30, 2018 for determining eligibility of participants for free and reduced-price meals in the Child Nutrition Programs. The income calculations are made based on the following formulas: Monthly income is calculated by dividing the annual income by 12 Twice monthly income is computed by dividing annual income by 24 Income received every two weeks is calculated by dividing annual income by 26 Weekly income is computed by dividing annual income by 52. All numbers are rounded upward to the next whole dollar. Children from families whose income is at or below the levels shown are eligible for free or reduced-price meals. Application forms are being sent to all homes with a letter to parents. To apply for free or reduced-price meals, households should fill out the application and return it to the school. Additional copies are available at the principal’s office at each school. Only one application is required per household and an application for free or reducedprice benefits cannot be approved unless it contains complete eligibility information as indicated on the application and instructions. The information provided on the application is confidential and will be used only for the purposes of determining eligibility and for administration and enforcement of the lunch and breakfast programs. Note that the district may share your eligibility information with education, health, and nutrition programs to help them evaluate, fund, or determine benefits for their programs, auditors for program reviews, and law enforcement officials to help them look into violations of program rules. This information may also be verified at any time during the school year by school or other program officials. Applications may be submitted at any time during the year.

For up to 30 operating days into the new school year, eligibility from the previous year will continue within the same local educational agency (LEA). When the carry-over period ends, unless the household is notified that their children are directly certified or the household submits an application that is approved, the children must pay full price for school meals and the school will not send a reminder or a notice of expired eligibility. No application is required if the District directly certifies a child based on a household member receiving assistance from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) or the Temporary Family Assistance (TFA) program. All children in these households are eligible for free meal benefits. Households receiving assistance under the SNAP/ TFA programs will be notified of their eligibility and their children will be provided free benefits unless the household notifies the determining official that it chooses to decline benefits. If any children were not listed on the eligibility notice, the household should contact the District or school to have free meal benefits extended to those children. Households receiving SNAP or TFA benefits for their children should only submit an application if they are not notified of their eligibility by September 8, 2017. If a child is not directly certified, the household should complete a free and reduced-price meal application form. The application for the SNAP or TFA households require the SNAP or TFA case number. The signature of an adult household member is also required. Children in households participating in WIC may be eligible for free or reduced-price meals. Please send in an application or contact the determining official for more information. When known to the District/ school, households will be notified of any child’s eligibility for free meals if the individual child is Other Source Categorically Eligible because the child is categorized as either homeless or runaway as defined by law and determined by the District’s or school’s homeless liaison. Households with children who are categorically eligible under Other Source Categorically Eligible Programs should complete an application and check-off the relevant box. Questions should be directed to the determining official. For any child not listed on the eligibility notice, the households should contact the school or determining official about any child also eligible under one of

the determining official on an informal basis. If he/she wishes to make a formal appeal, a request either orally or in writing, may be made to Jeffrey Solan, Superintendent of Cheshire Public Schools—29 Main Street, Cheshire, CT 06410, (203) 250-2400—for a hearing to appeal the decision. The policy contains an outline of the hearing procedure. Each school and the central office of the School District has a copy of the policy, which may be reviewed by an interested party. If a household member becomes unemployed or if household size changes at any time, the family should contact the school to file a new application. Such changes may make the children of the household eligible for reduced-price meals or free meals, if the family income falls at or below the levels shown in the Income Guidelines. Questions regarding the application process may be directed to the determining official at (203) 250-2459.

Back To School 2017 Important Information Regarding Local School Bus Routes

T

he bus routes for the 20172018 school year for Cheshire Public Schools, and for the Cheshire students attending Wilcox Technical School, Lyman Hall High School and St. Bridget School, will be available on the Cheshire Public Schools website—www.cheshire.k12.ct.us/ district-departments/transportation— and will be updated periodically. Current busing information will also be accessible via Powerschool. The Board of Education Transportation Policy 3541 is also available on the Cheshire Public Schools website. In preparation for the first day of school on Monday, Aug. 28, parents and students are asked to review busing information that will be distributed via e-mail notifications. Please note that the busing information may change; the most up-to-date information can be found on the District’s website and in Powerschool. 1. All bus route stop times are approximate. Students should be at their appropriate bus stops approximately 10 minutes before the scheduled pickup time. The bus will not stop if the student is inside the house, garage, in a car, or on the front porch. The bus stop is 10 to 15 feet from the curb in view of the bus driver. Pickup times may be adjusted during the first few weeks of school and can change from day to day during the school year due

to issues such as traffic, weather, temporary road construction, students entering or leaving district, etc. 2. Bus schedules for Cheshire Public Schools for the 2017-2018 school year are established according to the enrollment information available as of early August. The bus schedules are subject to revision due to enrollment changes such as transfers, address changes, or additional registrations, and processing of Available Seat Petition requests. Please refer to the Cheshire Public Schools website for the most up-to-date bus routes. 3. Walking distance—A student’s walking distance to school and walking distance to the bus stop, as defined in Section 2 of Transportation Policy 3541 of the Cheshire Board of Education, shall not exceed the following standards: Students who are in kindergarten shall not be required to walk farther than one-half mile to school or to the bus stop; students who are in grades 1 through 6 shall not be required to walk farther than one mile to school or to the bus stop; students who are in grades 7 through 12 shall not be required to walk farther than one-and one-half miles to school or to the bus stop. Walking distance means the linear measure from a point at the curb or edge of a public road at the student’s residence to a point at the nearest

Reduce Risk Of Illness This Year continued from page 2

school building entrance; to a point at the nearest, safe entrance to the school grounds located within one hundred feet of the school building entrance; or to the bus pickup/drop off area; or to the bus stop, if applicable. Walking Area means the area encompassed by the student’s walking route. The walking area may be paved or unpaved and is usually parallel to a public road and distinguished by curbing, drainage ditch, grass area, fencing, or other features independent of any white line safety markings along the road pavement. Walking area includes sidewalks. 4. All written requests for transportation to and/or from a location other than your assigned bus stop (for daycare, student’s workplace, community program, or due to unique and individual hardship) must be made on a yearly basis using the form Available Seat Petition which is available on the Cheshire Public Schools website. Please complete the form and return it to the Transportation Office. Due to the issues that must be addressed at the start of the school year, forms received after Aug. 4 may not be processed until Sept. 18. Any requests for changes or additions to transportation during the school year may take up to four days to process. Parents/guardians are responsible for

transportation until a bus is assigned. Send the completed forms to: Transportation Department, 157 Sandbank Rd., Cheshire, CT 06410, or fax to (203) 272-6880, or email lmiller@ cheshire.k12.ct.us. 5. All written requests to establish or alter an existing bus route and/or stop must be made on a yearly basis using the form Accommodation Petition, which is available on the District’s website. Send the completed form to: Transportation Department, 157 Sandbank Rd., Cheshire, CT 06410; or fax to (203) 272-6880, or email lmiller@cheshire.k12.ct.us. The Cheshire Public School System appreciates your patience while we address the large number of requests for changes that are received at the beginning of the school year. Board of Education Policy 3541 states, “Bus routes shall be established to provide the safest and shortest routes as economically as possible.” Based on this, transportation requests are addressed with highest priority being the safety of students, followed by routing changes caused by road construction, assigning bus stops for new students, reducing the routes that take longer than 50 minutes after the first two weeks of school, and inputting these changes into the computer system. 6. In addition, parents are asked to

pay close attention to the following policy of the Board of Education: Parents/guardians are responsible for the actions and safety of their children walking to and from, and at, the bus stop and to and from the school assigned. Please note that a parent, guardian, or responsible older sibling must be at the assigned bus stop of a kindergarten student or student with special needs when the bus picks up or delivers the student to and from school. Students in grades one through 12 will be dropped off at their bus stop regardless of whether or not a parent or designated individual is waiting for them. 7. When Cheshire schools are closed for the day due to inclement weather, the Wilcox Tech, Lyman Hall and Sound School buses will not transport students to Wilcox Technical School, Lyman Hall or Sound School, even if either school opens that day. Regarding all schools, in the event a delay or cancellation is not called, parents are encouraged to keep children home if they deem local neighborhood conditions unsafe for travel to schools. 8. For information regarding student transportation, phone (203) 2722472. If no answer, please call (203) 250-2400. For lost articles left on a DATTCO School bus, please call (203) 6998877.

make more welcome homes for germs than others. Studies have shown that kids were most likely to encounter germs in schools on water fountain spigots and on plastic cafeteria trays. Teach kids to never put their mouths on fountains and to avoid eating any food that might fall onto their trays in the cafeteria. School-aged children are susceptible to colds and flu when spending time in the classroom. But parents can reduce their youngsters’ cold and flu risk in various ways.

Preparing young singers (ages 7-17) to be outstanding community members who are dedicated to musical excellence. In June, our choristers joined with the adult choir in making their Carnegie Hall debut! We welcome new members, regardless of their level of musicianship, to join us in our musical adventure. Many different styles of music offered. Most rehearsals are followed by a shared meal and games. For more information email Dr. Stuart Paul Duncan at musicdirector@stpeterscheshire.org.
