Zhu Recounts Her “Survivor” Career At Cheshire High School
E
steemed graduates, parents, administrators, and faculty, good evening. I’m so honored to be speaking to you as the valedictorian of the Class of 2017. First of all, let me give my warmest congratulations to the senior class for graduating. I want to give a big shout-out to our teachers for letting me sleep in class while also inspiring us to expand our intellectual curiosity. Thank you to all the parents for the unconditional positive regard. Most importantly, I want to thank you, my fellow classmates, who have enriched these past 12 years in Cheshire—the only place I call home. Now, when the administrators told me to write a speech with some “wisdom,” I went home, turned on my computer for two minutes, stared blankly at the screen, and then went straight to Netflix. After about five hours of watching “Friends,” I struggled to work on this speech. What should it be about? Life? No. Memories? No. Pokemon? No. No. No. So what am I an expert in? What has all my experience and knowledge during my 18 years on this planet culminated into? Reality TV. My favorite show is “Survivor,” and I think it’s safe to say that four years of high school was similar to surviving on a desert island—always hungry, lots of crying, and whether it was on the athletic fields, in the classroom, on stage or in our desire to serve, a burning desire to be triumphant. Class of 2017, we’ve been through much in our four years— from the new SATs to question-

Angela Zhu able bio music videos to Lougee’s pen clicking rants to prom-raining to being chased in the halls by Sneaky Pete, to being gaggled to “kale yeah!” Over my time here at CHS, I’ve composed a survival guide for the future that aligns with Survivor’s motto—outwit, outplay, outlast. Outwit. This theme is not just about being smarter, although that doesn’t hurt. It’s about thinking for yourself. Don’t let the limitations of society define you. Embrace creativity. Imagine if Steve Jobs never invented the iPhone, what would the world be like? Imagine if Mark Zuckerberg never
stole Facebook from his Harvard pals, what would the world be like? Imagine if the chicken nugget kid never took the Twitter record from Ellen DeGeneres, what would the world be like? Though it may feel like “the floor is lava,” don’t be afraid to take that step outside the box. Alone, ideas are ghosts waiting to take on flesh. Outplay. A great deal of our world from now on will be about relationships. In college, at the office, and at home, it doesn’t matter whether you have a Ross and Rachel relationship, a Yoda and Luke Skywalker relationship, or a

Michael Scott and Dwight Shrute relationship—you’ll always have to find a way to work things out. To me, outplaying is about being able to maneuver yourself through the ups and downs of relationships. Life isn’t only about the highs. Outlast. This beyond all else is the most important survival tip. Your dreams will never be able to find you if you don’t put in the blood, sweat, and tears. As Ralph Waldo Emerson said, “What lies behind us, and what lies before us are small matters compared to what lies within us.” Whether you strive to drop your latest hits on Soundcloud like Sam Hales or be the next Oprah like Chelum Okoro, or be the best “equipment manager” of the track team like Sarah Clark or be the light of Mr. Rood’s life like Rachel Esposito, you need to give all of yourself. Wishing without doing does not produce favorable results. Believe me, if it did, I’d be queen of England right now. Bill Gates didn’t build a multibillion dollar company without lifting a finger. Barack Obama didn’t become the first African American president by chilling by the pool. Kim Kardashian didn’t get that popping booty by eating potato chips on the couch. Ambition loves diligence like Kanye loves Kanye.
Now that’s all the survival tips I have to offer, but I want to take a moment and slow things down to the present. This graduation is more than a piece of paper, more than the completion of 22 credits, and more than an excuse to post on Instagram. This is the culmination of everything that we have worked for, cried for, counted down the days for. This is the day to recognize all that we have learned about life, love, the significance of sleep, and most importantly, the most effective ways to procrastinate at CHS. Let us take a moment to praise ourselves for surviving because, frankly, we deserve it. We won the state tournament for softball last year. We put on two incredible productions— ”Radium Girls” and “Singin’ in the Rain.” We have award-winning political groups. I know that our accomplishments and friendships here today will transcend beyond these four walls. Wherever you go in life, whether it be college, the military, or the workforce, always remember, “we’re all in this together.” You all have made me proud to be a Ram. Remember to always outwit, outplay, and outlast. Thank you and congratulations to the Cheshire High School Class of 2017. We did it! And P.S. ... Thanks mom and dad!

arents, relatives, friends, faculty, administrators, and, most importantly, the graduating class of 2017—it is a great honor to speak before you today as your Salutatorian. First and foremost, I would like to extend a congratulations to the Class of 2017. After spending 4,680 hours breathing in the air of Cheshire High, we finally did it! We survived, at least for now. In just four short years, we crammed so much knowledge into our brains. We mastered the three branches of government. We learned not to kill a mockingbird. And most importantly, we learned how to calculate the trajectory of a ping pong ball so it’ll land right in the cup. But Cheshire High didn’t just give us the knowledge we needed to succeed in college, the workforce, the military, or wherever else the world takes us. Over the past four years, it has provided us with a family to share experiences with. From Candy Land in the math hallways on B1 day freshman year to Raj’s rap battle with the Cheshire Ram to a 9 a.m. dismissal because of a bathroom flooding, we have created lifelong memories together. It is those experiences and memories that we will cherish forever. Now, as we depart the high school, we enter a world full of uncertainty—a path that is ours to navigate. Our choices and our actions will define who we are. We must seek to be active citizens within our communities. That means helping our neighbors, voting in every election, and standing up to injustices. Meanwhile, we need

to do with your failure. Will you choose to let that one instance define the rest of your life? Or will you choose to learn from that mistake and make something of it? Steve Jobs choose the latter option, and he was able to create the world’s most valuable company and the device in almost everyone’s pockets today, except for those Greenies. Ultimately, it’s not your failures that matter, but the strength of your dedication, the measure of your abilities, and the scope of your ideas. Over the past four years at Cheshire High, I have met future musicians, NASA engineers, pro athletes, politicians, and artists. There is so much potential in our class, and I know that we will be the ones to cure cancer, stop climate change, explore the universe, and solve our world’s greatest problems. Cheshire High School has forever shaped who I am today, and I am eternally grateful to have spent these past four years with all of you. Now, it’s time to celebrate our achievement—successfully completing high school and our journey in the Cheshire Public Schools system. As we look back at this momentous accomplishment, let us also remember to recognize those who have had such a lasting impact on our lives—our parents, our teachers, and our friends. Let us never forget their contribution to our education and success. And let us never forget each other and the memories we’ve created together. Thank you and congratulations, Class of 2017!

Dhage Urges Classmates To “Get Back To Work” After Graduation
G
ood evening, ladies and gentlemen. Before I begin, I’d like to take a moment to thank my family. Without their yelling, lecturing, and yet unparalleled support, I would not be on this stage today. And so, Superintendent Solan, Dr. Gadd, Mrs. Pelz, Mr. T, Mrs. Reed, teachers and faculty, and of course, most importantly, my fellow brothers and sisters in the Class of 2017... thank you and congratulations. For 12 years—12 years ladies and gentlemen—we, together, have toiled through blood, sweat, tears, and, somehow, even a bowl of cafeteria Chili. These past four years in particular have been a truly immense experience for all of us. It has been a period of incredible growth and unprecedented progress. Like a roller coaster, high school has been a fast ride with many ups and downs. But in the end, our persistence and our willingness to challenge ourselves has brought us enormous success. I know that our ambition and our desire to overcome adversity will serve us substantially in our fu-
tures. I see this drive, this desire, this stubborn ambition in each and every one of us. I see it in our sports teams, striving to set national records and defy all odds and expectations. I see it in our scholars, taking risks in the hardest of classes that they know they could fail, but choose to bet on themselves anyway. I see this drive in the hearts of those who pass through our hallways, helping those who need a hand and serving the needs of their classmates tirelessly. I see this drive in the eyes of every student in every class, eager to expand their minds and leave their mark on the complicated world that they have inherited. Never in my life have I been more optimistic about a group of people,than I am about those who stand next to me today. To the parents, to the families of all these students, I don’t know what you did, nor how you did it. But with your vision and your values, you have raised the cream of the American crop. Your children, the Class of 2017, will go far—I have not an ounce of doubt about that.
And so to my class, I ask you all that, no matter how far you go in life and no matter how much you go on to achieve, to not forget what brought us there—this community, right here. It is through times tough and through our compassion for one another that we have gone from childish and sloppy freshmen, to mature and eager young adults. From geometry midterms to Gov exams to Spanish video projects, I’ve found that every assignment, every test, and every problem has taught us more about ourselves than anything else ever could. We’ve learned to think, we’ve learned to work together, we’ve learned to question everything, and, most importantly, we’ve learned to not let failure get the best of us. Together as a class, through moments good and moments bad, we’ve learned that we must always work towards an everbrighter and greater future, no matter how difficult the road may seem. So, Class of 2017, today we celebrate 12 years of hard work and 12 years of determination. But tomorrow morning, when we

Raj Dhage wake up, it's time to get back to work. As we now come of age, the future of our society is no longer in our parents hands, nor in the hands of our administrators and faculty. We now have the immense responsibility of shaping our country, the responsibility of carrying the world on our shoulders, and the responsibility of cultivating the grass for a new generation. Class of 2017, the past four years have been extraordinary, but here's to a lifetime of great work. Let’s take risks, let’s pick fights, let’s shake society, let’s accomplish the unexpected, and let’s always honor boundaries, but not be afraid to push them a bit. And so, as I leave you today, I want to recite to you what the re-
nowned poet Edgar Albert Guest once said: There are thousands to tell you it cannot be done, There are thousands to prophesy failure, There are thousands to point out to you one by one, The dangers that wait to assail you. But just buckle in with a bit of a grin, Just take off your coat and go to it; Just start in to sing as you tackle the thing That “cannot be done,” and you’ll do it. Velcofsky Plays Role Of Director For The Class Of 2017 “Movie”
H
ello everyone; faculty, parents, graduates. It is surreal that tonight marks the moment that we will no longer be Cheshire High School students. We have spent the last four years of our lives here and, now, it is time for us to each move on to something new. Personally, next year I will be attending college to study Film Production. One of the many reasons why I love films and movies is because they always put into perspective what parts of the story are most important. In a movie, audiences can watch the characters grow and change as they face obstacles and achieve greatness, all as the director skillfully hints at why each scene adds to the significance of the production as a whole. The more I thought about it, the more I realized our time at Cheshire High School showcased a lot of the same plot points as a movie. We grew and changed and overcame and achieved, and now that our experience is coming to an end and it is time to reflect on what was most important from it, I couldn’t help but wish there was a director to assist us in seeing the significance from our time here. And so, to figure out what made our experience special, I wondered what a movie depicting our CHS careers would look like.
The film would start by fading in from black to reveal a shot of the front of the high school on the first day of our freshman year. The camera would follow us as we all nervously shuffle into the building and look desperately lost once we’re inside. At this point, it was easy to feel like we were extras in someone else’s movie. The storyline was still foreign to us and we did not know how we would be written in. However, as the film continues into the present, the mood shifts. The director replaces the feeling of freshman uncertainty now with a sense of belonging and comfort as we each move through our years here and create our own character arcs—starting to be shaped into the individuals we are today. Our growth is further marked by no longer feeling anxious over having the dreaded freshman backpack but, instead, by always fearing that dreaded question that seemed to pop up everywhere: “So, where are you thinking about going for college?” The director would edit in a bombardment of voices asking this impending question, starting softly and increasing in volume, as we got closer to the fall of senior year, making both the camera and our heads spin. However, all the spectacular times we had in between would of course be included in this film as well. A montage of joyful images then ensues, to an upbeat song. That pep rally sophomore year when Raj put on a Spartan costume and very kindly rapped for all of us. And when Chelum and Thomas were crowned king

and queen at both Junior and Senior Prom, making them official CHS royalty. The camera would be sure to capture the little moments as well, like Karl Meakin and Jake Lawlor working so passionately to revive the school’s greenhouse. And the Powderpuff football team running through the halls on the morning of their game this past fall. And I think, most importantly, this film would showcase its main characters—all of you. Rachel Esposito’s contagious laugh, Abby Abramson’s willingness to always give a helping hand, Matt Mita’s unwavering kindness to everyone he meets. It is strange to think now that we ever felt like supporting characters in our CHS careers, considering how far we have come. Remember, you, and everything you have done, made you the stars of this production. And this movie culminates here, the last scene that’s happening right now. Graduation. I think when people watch movies with others it connects them. Films, if they are good, will make you laugh and cry and get scared and smile. And when you watch them with others, no matter how different you may be, you all experience this simultaneous rollercoaster of emotions together and it binds you to one another. We not only watched this movie together, we lived it. We are all connected by what we have experienced during our time at Cheshire High School because we experienced everything together. Tonight is the last memory we will share together as CHS students and I think that it is the perfect note to end on. Following this final, bittersweet scene is, of course, the credits. Credits following a film can often get overlooked as they scroll down the screen and seem unimportant, but the credits are, in fact, the most important part of the production. Without the people named in the credits, the production could not have existed. Our production could not have existed without the teachers and family members who guided us along the way. I have had the most amazing teachers during my time here. They taught me not only their respective subjects, but how to be hardworking, thoughtful and the best version of myself I can be. My parents, older brother and sister, grandmother and grandfather, whom I just lost about a week and a half ago, have always supported and advised me in whatever I have wanted to do. They are the absolute best—I hope that I have made them proud up until this point and can continue to do so.

Hannah Rose Velcofsky I cannot thank everyone enough who has helped me get this far. So that would conclude the film of our time spent at Cheshire High School. And though our CHS movie is over, I’m looking forward to the sequel. I know that from being here, growing together and learning from our par-
ents and teachers, we will make new—blockbuster-worthy memories—in whatever we all choose to do once we leave. And maybe, if we are lucky, Ryan Gosling will play one of us in the remake. Thank you and congratulations to all of the graduates.

The annual All Night Grad Party, hosted by the CHS PTO, was held on Wednesday evening, with graduates playing games, eating snacks, and reminiscing about their time at the school.
