WHAT’S BAKING AT HOBBY HILL FARM FRESH? by Steve Cook
T
he little store in Powhatan that we’ve all come to know and love has become even more loveable. I’m talking about Hobby Hill Farm Fresh, located at 2652 Anderson Highway. If you have never visited, you’ll be amazed to discover the wide variety of gifts. There’s everything from their house-made jams and jellies to soaps and candles to gift baskets and hand-painted glassware. And I haven’t even scratched the surface. Speaking of “scratch,” Hobby Hill Farm Fresh has now added made-from-scratch, custom-decorated cakes, cupcakes and cookies to their repertoire. I visited the store recently and met two lovely ladies who share a true passion for their crafts. I first spoke with Lisa Nye, who has an art degree from VCU. Lisa is putting her talents to good use creating the most beautifully and intricately decorated cookies you’d ever hope to sink your teeth into. These cookies are as much a delight

to one’s eyes as they are to one’s taste buds. Lisa says the sugar cookies can be baked using a variety of flavors such as almond, vanilla, lemon or orange. The icing can also be flavored to suit your tastes. Next, I spoke with Linda Carnahan. Linda is in charge of baking the custom-decorated cakes. After looking at samples of some of the creative works, such as one with a tuna jumping right out of a cake that she had baked for a child, I asked her if she had a background in custom baking. “No,” Linda replied modestly, “I’m just a grandma.” Well, that may be the most important thing a person could be. But Linda says her only cake-baking experience until recently was baking for the kids. Today, Hobby Hill Farm Fresh can offer custom-decorated cakes for virtually any occasion. INGREDIENTS 3 cups sugar 1 cup vegetable oil 3 large eggs 1 16-ounce can solid pack pumpkin 3 cups all purpose flour 1 teaspoon ground cloves 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1 teaspoon ground nutmeg 1 teaspoon baking soda 1/2 teaspoon salt

PREPARATION
Preheat oven to 350°F. Butter and flour two 9x5x3-inch loaf pans. Beat sugar and oil in large bowl to blend. Mix in eggs and pumpkin. Sift flour, cloves, cinnamon, nutmeg, baking soda, salt and baking powder into another large bowl. Stir into pumpkin mixture in 2 additions. Mix in walnuts, if desired.

Divide batter equally between prepared pans. Bake until tester inserted into center comes out clean, about 1 hour 10 minutes. Transfer to racks and cool 10 minutes. Using sharp knife, cut around edge of loaves. Turn loaves out onto racks and cool completely. This recipe yields two loaves of delicious pumpkin bread!

T
here’s a new street about to open in Hallsley, Chesterfield County’s prestigious residential community and one of the most sought-after neighborhoods in the entire Metro Richmond area. This new street is somewhat different from the other lovely tree-lined roadways that lead through the community. This is the Street of Hope. So, just what what makes the Street of Hope different? It’s certainly not in the quality or the aesthetics of the new homes. Indeed, the Street of Hope will offer some of the most beautifully designed homes on the market. Eight of Hallsley’s most respected custom builders have partnered with East West Communities, the developers of Hallsley, to create this first-ever Southern Living inspired Community Street of Hope. “There are eight furnished designer models that are all Southern Living home plans – never before built in Hallsley,” says Connie Pollard, Senior Vice President of Marketing for East West Communities. “We can’t wait to see these Lowcountry and coastal cottage homes come to life!” However, the differences go well beyond the fact that prospective homebuyers and others will have a chance to tour homes that they’ve never before seen in Hallsley. The most important distinction is that the Street of Hope is “paved” with the noble goal of raising $700,000. Explaining the purpose of this ambitious project, Pollard says, “East West Communities is hosting the 2017 Street of Hope to benefit research and education at the VCU Massey Cancer Center and to provide educational opportunities for underprivileged Richmond area youths who wish to attend the VCU School of Business. This event is a vehicle for our business partners to give back to the Richmond community in a combined effort to make a significant difference.” The proceeds, Pollard says, will come from sponsorships, ticket sales, a Home of Hope, and special events that are planned to showcase the beautiful new homes that line the Street, which opens to the public on Saturday, October 21 and runs through Sunday November 5th. The admission is just $10 for adults. Children 12 and under are admitted at no charge. (To purchase tickets, see contact information below.) In addition to touring the homes, visitors will have an opportunity to shop at the Street of Hope Marketplace and to enjoy creative cuisine from Cafe Caturra and some of the area’s most popular food trucks. A Realtor preview breakfast will be held on October 19, and a special VIP Gala and Live Auction is scheduled for the following night. The gala not only offers an opportunity to take a sneak peek at the beautiful homes, but to enjoy hors d’oeuvres, an open bar, live entertainment from the Atlanta-based Perfect 10 Band and to bid on some amazing items including gourmet kitchen appliances, a child’s dream playhouse, a Napa Valley or Italian getaway and much more. Tickets are $100 per person and are expected to sell out well in advance. Special themed events are planned during the 17-day run, including Concerts of Hope on both of the Thursday evenings with Three Sheets to the Wind appearing on October 26 and Fat Elvis band on November 2.
