even Virginia authors entertained their audience with excerpts from their books during the Second Annual Writers Roundup hosted by the Friends of the Goochland Branch Library on February 10, 2017. The theme was “History Comes Alive,” and it did, with stories that have their roots in 16th century family history, scandalous local lore and dramatic first-person accounts. Author readings were followed by a question and answer panel discussion and book signings.

he Richmond area is rife with local farms, farmers markets and farm-to-fork restaurants. Many of us are discovering the wonder and joy of knowing exactly where our food comes from. It fosters a strong sense of connection – not just to our food and the whole process of creating it, but also to the men and women who have chosen the farming life and make these meals possible for the rest of us. One of the leaders in backto-the-farm movement in Goochland is Lisa Dearden. Lisa is a superwoman with a passion for sustainable agriculture. She draws from 20+ years of experience in sales, marketing, finance and training, which she now lends (and how generously!) to the sustainable agriculture movement in the region. Aside from running two farmers markets through RVAg and serving as treasurer for the Virginia Farmers Market Association, she also owns ChiknEGG Productions, a company that assists up-and-coming food entrepreneurs and organizations by providing training, consulting and an incubator kitchen. Among her great contributions to sustainable agriculture in the region is initiating a conversation between the Department of Agriculture and the Department of Health to streamline state regulations governing farmers markets, which, as we can all see, is thriving. Church Hill Irish Festival
The festival begins on Saturday with the St. Patrick’s Parade and continues with a 4 to block street fair in front of St. Patrick’s Church on North 25th Street between Broad and Franklin Streets on Historic Church Hill. Traditional Irish musicians, bagpipers and dancers will perform throughout the weekend. In addition to great entertainment, there will be plenty of family fun, including children’s games, face painting and Irish themed crafts. Over thirty Irish vendors will be in attendance! 1 quart chicken or vegetable stock
2 cups diced yellow or white onion
2 cups half-and-half
4 large leeks, cleaned and sliced (plus 1 cup julienned, for garnish)
4-5 medium peeled, russet (baking) potatoes cut into roughly half inch cubes; Yukon Gold potatoes can be substituted for a somewhat creamier consistency
1 tsp. minced garlic (or more according to your taste) 3 tablespoon butter

PREPARATION 1.) Cut green leafy tops off of leeks and put aside. Slice light green to white portion of leeks in half lengthwise. Place each half length flat side down and cut the leek into thin, C-shaped slices. The amount of cut leeks may seem excessive, but they are mild in taste and reduce significantly during cooking. [Note: Leeks can be dirty, so place all cut leeks in a large bowl, fill with water and agitate with your hand. Any sediment should sink to the bottom of the bowl. Empty rinsed leeks into a colander, return them to the bowl and repeat until the water in the bowl remains clear.] 2.) Using medium to large stock pot, brown and render the pancetta or bacon. Remove pancetta or bacon and set aside. Add 2 tbs. olive oil to pot, stirring to mix with the pancetta or bacon fat. 3.) Add onions, then add the cut and drained leeks. Let cook until onions and leeks are somewhat translucent and softened, stirring periodically to avoid browning or sticking to the bottom of the pot. Add the garlic and stir. 4.) Add 3 tbs. butter. When melted add the 3 tbs. all-purpose flour and stir until thoroughly combined. Add 1 quart of chicken or vegetable stock, then the potatoes and cook until the potatoes are tender. Cook time will vary depending on quantity and type of potato used. 5.) When potatoes are cooked through, remove soup from heat and add the halfand-half. Stir to incorporate. Use a hand blender to blend the soup to a smooth consistency. 6.) Serve in soup bowls, placing a pat of butter or swirl of olive oil in the center and using the pancetta/bacon and reserved leeks for garnish. Perfect with a crusty bread.
