A BEAUTIFUL HIDDEN PLACE DISCOVER LAKESIDE AT WELCH ESTATE By Steve Cook

R

egardless of how many months of pre-planning may have gone into the occasion, one’s wedding day is often filled with everyone scurrying about at a frenetic pace in order to ensure that the occasion comes together perfectly. Suppose you could have that perfect day but in a peaceful, private and relaxing atmosphere. That’s the vision Powhatan resident Ashley Welch has had virtually from the moment she and her husband Robert laid eyes on what would become their new Powhatan County home. “We were looking to move to Powhatan in order to give our kids more room,” Ashley explains. “We also wanted them to go to Powhatan schools.” As the Chesterfield County family drove up the beautiful, tree-lined drive for that first time, they probably weren’t expecting that their house-hunting excursion would be so serendipitous. But there, just beyond what would prove to be their beautiful new home, was a lovely 5-bedroom, Vermont-style guest home that had been built by the previous owners back in 2000. “It had always been a dream of mine to have a wedding venue,” says Ashley, who adds that both she and her husband “immediately fell head over heels in love with the property.”

By the time they moved in this past May, she says that plans were well under way to use the guest home and the surrounding property, including the adjacent 26-acre Lake Lewis as an idyllic wedding venue – Lakeside at Welch Estate. Over the ensuing months, Ashley has put together a variety of packages that offer brides-tobe everything that they could possibly want in such a venue. The gorgeous true timber home, with its ultra modern kitchen and open floor plan makes for the perfect spot for family and members of the wedding party to gather prior to the event, and the five bedrooms offer luxurious overnight accommodations, where the couple and others can enjoy beautiful views of the lake and surrounds from the porch. There’s even a stone firepit to add to the relaxation in this truly romantic setting. “The thing that most excites our clients,” says Ashley, is the privacy as well as the beautiful surroundings. As I visit with her in the guest home, workmen are busily putting the finishing touches on what will be a beautiful 110’ x 34’ dock which can accommodate up to 200 guests (seated) for the ceremony itself. Receptions will take place in a spacious tent that is located between the lake and the house, but plans are underway to replace the tent with an all-glass enclosed banquet facility by 2019. By the time, the first wedding takes place within a few weeks, Ashley projects that most weekends in 2018 will have already been reserved. “We’ve booked quite a few for the spring of 2019, as well,” she adds. In order to ensure that your wedding at Lakeside at Welch Estate goes off without a hitch, every package includes an onsite wedding coordinator. And while Ashley can provide brides with an excellent vendors list of caterers, photographers, florists and the like, each bride is free to choose and provide her own services. That flexibility makes the cost of having your wedding in such an ideal setting even more manageable. “When we got married, we were virtually broke,” Ashley recalls. “We had not started our lives together at that point.” With that in mind, packages offering full use of the venue, including the guesthouse and the services of the coordinator, start at under $4,000. There are other benefits to be enjoyed when you select Lakeside at Welch Estate for your wedding – benefits that you could not purchase at any price from other wedding venues. For instance, come the morning of the wedding day, the groom and his groomsmen might opt to go fishing on the lake. Kayaks and canoes are also available for their use. Privacy, relaxation and an unparalleled setting are the key ingredients that come together to culminate in what will create the perfect atmosphere for your very special day. On its homepage, the website (LakesideAtWelchEstate.com) encapsulates the uniqueness of this venue better than I ever could, describing it as “A beautiful hidden place, that will ignite your soul. Deep into the beautiful unknown, (lies) a retreat that boasts beauty and peace.” Visit the site or phone 804-405-5462 for more information.

MIDWEEK MAKEOVER SPECIAL!

with Steve Cook

I

f you have a hankering for some good old-fashioned down home cooking, including some of the best barbecue you’ve ever tasted, you can find it right here in Goochland County. But for those times when you’re in the mood for the exotic, perhaps something with a bit of an international flare, you can also find that in Goochland, as well. I took a little culinary tour the other day and while some of my stops were at places that I’ve enjoyed before, I also discovered some new delights along the way.

HOT OFF THE GRILL: My first stop took me to Goochland Courthouse and to the Courthouse Market & Grill at 2962 River Road, West. Someone recently asked me if I had ever tried this fantastic little place in Goochland. I had to admit that I hadn’t…until now. Amin Rayess and his wife Kari run the restaurant. Amin had previously operated a pizza place in Short Pump before opening up the grill about eight years ago. He says he wanted to be closer to home. It would stand to reason that he’d put his delicious pizzas on the menu, but there’s so much more, such as his burgers, which he describes as “really good.” Calzones, Cuban sandwiches, even crab cakes (every Wednesday) are other menu highlights. Amin tells me that his hot soups are perfect for what has proven to be a pretty frigid winter. The place opens for breakfast and lunch on Mondays through Saturdays. Start your day with one of their delicious omelets or a stack of fluffy pancakes, or choose from a variety of breakfast plates. Amin says that he’s the only cook in the place, adding, “So when you eat here, it’s like having your own private chef.”

PIZZA PERFECTION: If you’re looking for all of your Italian favorites, check out Bella Sicilia Italian Restaurant just down the road from Courthouse Market & Grill at 2913 River Road, West. Sal Gambino, a native of Sicily, runs the place, which is famous for its pizzas. It’s a delight to just enter the restaurant and smell the aromas. Of course, actually tasting the food is even more pleasurable. Bella Sicilia a is a fullservice restaurant, offering everything from supreme pizzas and sub sandwiches, to appetizers and a host of Sal’s favorite Italian entrees. Save room for such tantalizing desserts as New York-style cheesecake, a creamy cannoli or, my favorite, the homemade tiramisu. There’s also a private banquet room adjacent to the main dining room – perfect for your next special event.

THE REAL DEAL: “Authentic southern European” fare awaits just around the corner at Eccoti Restaurant (1940 Sandy Hook Road). Robin Vitale, who operates the restaurant with her husband Salvatore, explains that description. “He’s from Sicily. I’m from the South.” Robin assures me that “authentic” is indeed the key word in this beautiful little eatery. And that includes their gyro, which is made with traditional lamb slices. You can have chicken, if you prefer, but, personally, when I can get the lamb, I go for the lamb. Other popular dishes include grilled chicken parm, baked gnocchi and a 16-ounce T-bone. Robin says she and Salvatore are in the process of making a few revisions and additions to the seasonal menu. One new item will be their crab dip. She says they’re also planning a special Valentine’s Day menu for the 14th (which is the logical time to have a Valentine’s Day menu).

DOWN HOME AT THE BARREL: While the Courthouse area has more than its share of international dining options, the Route 250 corridor in the county offers some excellent choices for good ol’ downhome cooking. One of my new favorites is The Pickle Barrel Restaurant at 12192 Plaza Drive, near Centerville. Owner, Sharon Farmer spent about 30 years working at Debbie’s Kitchen, a family-style restaurant in Glen Allen. So she knows what good home cooking tastes like and she’s brought it to the Pickle Barrel. Personally, I haven’t tried anything there that I didn’t absolutely love. The fried oysters, the hamburger steak, the flounder and the crab cakes…they’re all delicious. You’ve got to try their homemade desserts, too, such as blackberry cobbler and banana pudding. Believe me, you won’t go wrong when you dive into the Pickle Barrel.

TAKING IT UP A NOTCH: There’s another great dining spot out in Goochland that I want to tell you about. I’ve always enjoyed the Hickory Notch Grill at 2031 Broad Street Road in Maidens. But I hear that it’s gotten even better. The popular family-style restaurant is now under the ownership of Rebecca Forbes. Recently, I spoke with Rebecca’s sister-in-law Tamara Hyde, who is the new general manager there. Tamara, who has years of experience in the industry, says that the restaurant will continue to offer the same wonderful service and high-quality food for which the grill is famous. However, she adds that they’ll be taking things up a (hickory) notch or two and bringing some of their own personal favorites to the menu, to include fresh seafood, premium steaks, and, of course, homemade desserts. But, don’t worry, they’ll still be serving the same great barbecue, from their very popular hickory-smoked decadent ribs to their hickorysmoked 12-ounce cut of prime rib on Saturdays, which Tamara says “is not to miss.” Currently, she tells me, the grill offers beer and wine, but that there are plans to expand the bar menu to include your favorite cocktails come spring. And if you like a little music with your meal, there’s live country music on Tuesday nights and live Bluegrass on Thursdays. Entertainment begins around 6 p.m. “Come join in the fun,” Tamara says, adding that Hickory Notch may be offering more live entertainment on Friday and Saturday nights this spring. The restaurant is open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and from 12 ‘til 8 on Sundays. Speaking of spring, Hickory Notch offers a beautiful patio for outdoor dining, “It’s a great spot for rehearsal dinners, weddings or any private function,” Tamara says. The restaurant and its patio can accommodate up to 100 for your catered affair. They also do offsite catering for groups from 50 to 5,000 people.

A New Name for Goochland Free Clinic & Family Services

G

oochland Free Clinic and Family Services has changed its name to GoochlandCares Free Clinic and Family Services (GoochlandCares). “GoochlandCares continues the commitment to provide access to health care and basic human services to Goochland residents in need,” said Vicki Sharps, president of the board of directors. The ten-yearold organization moved into a new 20,000 square foot facility last month. According to Sally Graham, executive director, “Bringing our 11 programs under one roof has improved our ability to serve clients efficiently, safely and with dignity. The name change reflects our evolution as an organization and our vision for the community.” GoochlandCares, a private, 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation, is the continuation of a community tradition of caring. In 1952, Goochland Fellowship began providing help to individuals and families not eligible for government assistance. Goochland Free Clinic was founded in 1998 to respond to the health care needs of those without health insurance. The two groups merged in 2007 and became Goochland Free Clinic and Family Services (GFCFS). Scattered across the Goochland Courthouse area in three separate locations, GFCFS quickly experienced space constraints, and safety and accessibility issues. “Also,” Ms. Sharps said, “the name, Goochland Free Clinic and Family Services, was confusing to clients and potential donors who thought we were a county entity. That the Free Clinic was located in the county administration building added to the misunderstanding. Liz Rider, former board president remembers, “The board recognized the need for additional space and updated facilities to better serve clients. They envisioned a “one stop shop” where neighbors could have their health care and other basic needs addressed safely and with dignity and privacy. They approved a capital campaign to make that vision a reality.” Lisa Luck, board member and capital campaign chair, was thrilled with the community’s response. “From the very start, businesses and individuals opened their hearts. Some were able to contribute financially and helped us reach our fundraising goal in two years. Others provided in-kind donations like furniture or moving services. We were overwhelmed by the generosity of this community and are proud to be a part of it. Now is the perfect time to change our name to GoochlandCares.” Ms. Graham added, “The capital campaign is also funding conversion of the former Family Services building to emergency housing and establishment of a $1.5 million endowment to ensure sustainability. We are now poised to respond to the needs of the community today and into the future. It’s a new year. We have a new building. Now we have a new name and a renewed commitment to serving the community that made it happen.” Ms. Luck reminds us, “The capital campaign has concluded but we still need the community’s support to continue to provide services to Goochland residents in crisis. The need is real. It is urgent and it is growing.” In 2016, GoochlandCares served more than 1,600 residents (or approximately 7% of the county’s population). The organization relies on financial contributions, in-kind donations, partnerships and volunteers to conduct daily operations. “We urge the community to recommit, along with us, to making a difference in the lives of our neighbors in need.” GoochlandCares envisions a Goochland community where everyone in need receives quality healthcare, secure housing, nutritious food, adequate clothing, and is safe from violence. For more information or to support GoochlandCares, visit www.GoochlandCares.org or find them on Facebook at www.facebook.com/gfcfs.

2.) Dissolve salt and sugar in vinegar. 3.) Place the Boston Butt in the crockpot, fat side up. 4.) Pour the vinegar mixture all over and around the Boston Butt. 5.) Sprinkle the red pepper flakes on top and all around in the liquid. 6.) Put the lid on the crock pot and leave it alone. Do not open lid until pork is done. Rule of thumb...when the bone can be wiggled and is easy to remove, then the pork is done. 7.) When Butt is fully cooked, use a knife to trim off the fat cap.
