While they don’t promote themselves as purveyors of magical accessories, Saxon Shoes does help provide footwear to those in need during their annual shoe drive. If you’ve lived in Richmond for any length of time you’ve probably heard of Saxon Shoes. You may not have heard that they’re collecting for their 25th Shoes for the Needy drive. Partnering with The Salvation Army Adult Rehab Center, Saxon Shoes will be accepting new and gently used footwear until December 24 at both their Short Pump and Spotsylvania locations. Thinking Spring in December By Jacqueline Murphy
I
f your heart is aching for the vernal freshness of April, you won’t have that long to wait or far to travel. Even though you can reasonably expect that the air will be chilly at this time of year, there’s always a suggestion of spring in the atmosphere at Lavender Fields Herb Farm. Stanley and Nicole Schermerhorn’s sixth-generation farm in Glen Allen offers Central Virginia’s largest selection of USDA Certified Organic herb and vegetable plants along with year-round gardening classes for continued success season after season. You can head out to the farm this month and make a fresh herbal wreath using fragrant cuttings grown on the farm. You’ll learn easy design techniques and care tips to get the most out of your wreath. And, you’ll pick up practical gardening information as you peruse the gardens for additional material that’ll make your wreath really pop. The Schermerhorn’s family farm is set on 37 acres only minutes from Richmond and yet it feels as if you’re much farther afield. There’s a quaint farm store filled with unique gifts, local honey and all things lavender – from soaps and lotions to lip balms and bath bombs. Of the over 200 varieties of herbs for sale, Shaun Mercer, Nicole’s cousin and the retail shop manager, says that basil is the most popular plant. “We’ve got so many varieties of basil including cinnamon, lemon, lime, variegated, Thai, and Italian Large Leaf,” he says. “The retail side is focused on education. We have classes on how to plant, how to prune, cooking with herbs, and more.” Go back and visit when it actually is springtime and take in the view from the deck overlooking the Chickahominy River. You can sip a freshly made lavender lemonade or enjoy one of their signature lavender or honey ice creams. In the meantime, think spring. INGREDIENTS 1/2 cup white sugar 1/2 cup butter 1 egg 1 cup molasses 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1 teaspoon ground ginger 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 cup hot water
PREPARATION
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease and flour a 9-inch square pan. In a large bowl, cream together the sugar and butter. Beat in the egg, and mix in the molasses. In a bowl, sift together the flour, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, ginger, and cloves. Blend into the creamed mixture. Stir in the hot water. Pour into the prepared pan.
