SUBURBAN LIFESTYLE WITH FLAIR by Denise Johnson

f the prospect of suburban living in western Henrico County appeals to you, here are two unique neighborhoods with a distinct flair. These West End townhomes and condos offer units that range from cozy chic to grand luxury. Whether you’re interested in Midtown or the far West End, you’ll find neighborhoods to suit your lifestyle and budget.

Grayson Hill is an elegant community of brick, two-story townhomes located off of Patterson Avenue near Gaskins Road. If you’re looking for luxury and space, this is the place for you. With floor plans that range from 2,700 to 3,700 square feet. You can choose a three- or four-bedroom townhome with 3.5 baths, high ceilings and a two-car garage. Downstairs, residents can opt for a formal dining area or, in larger units, a second living area off the kitchen with a closed-in office. A butler’s pantry is located just off the kitchen for serving guests or a quick snack from the garage entrance. Both floor plans offer upstairs laundry space. The three-bedroom design has a full mudroom. Nestled among 50 wooded acres, with a resort style pool, state-of-the-art fitness center and walking trails, residents of Grayson Hill enjoy privacy and fun without having to leave their neighborhood. The exterior of each unit has its own personality with differ-

ent entrance designs and a range in colors for painted brick. Grayson Hill currently has move-in opportunities starting in the mid-$500s.

Libbie Mill is a vibrant townhome community surrounded by a variety of retail shops and a new county Library. The property also has a fountain—Libbie Lake, a walking trail and a park-like community space perfect for walking the dog or play-time with your little ones. The property has three-story townhomes with first-floor bedroom or living room option and a two-car garage, as well as two-story condominiums, with elevator access. Hardwood floors, spacious living areas (1,300-2,400 square feet) and finishing touches such as cabinet hardware and crown molding set Libbie Mill apart from other townhome communities. Each unit features a laundry area, a workstation and the option of a butler’s pantry. Located in the up and coming Mid-town area of Henrico, Libbie Mill offers residents easy access to Willow Lawn, the Interstate, downtown and Scott’s Addition. The proximity to I-95 and I-64 makes almost every RVA destination a 15-minute drive. The price range for Libbie Mill starts at $300k for condominiums and starting at $400k for townhomes. Aside from owning a gorgeous new townhome and quick access to all Henrico County has to offer, there is the plus of low-maintenance living. Both Grayson Hill and Libbie Mill are in locations that lend to stress-free travel in and around town with neighborhood designs that allow for walking and connecting with neighbors and the community at large. Both developments have model homes. Stop by and choose the home and neighborhood for you.

MIDWEEK MAKEOVER SPECIAL!

with Steve Cook

Y

ou don’t need anyone to tell you that Richmond has developed quite a reputation as a foodie town. And while many folks think you have to go downtown to enjoy the independent, locally owned and operated restaurants, there are actually several options right around Glen Allen. I’m not disparaging the chains. There are a few that do an excellent job, but with big national advertising budgets, you probably already know about them. So, here are a few of the local spots that I enjoy.

MY BIG FAT GREEK CELEBRATION: If you’ve been to any sort of Greek festivities, you may have heard the exclamation “Opa!” Well, there’s a new reason you may be hearing that exclamation throughout the Twin Hickory area as folks discover the recently opened Opa Greek Grill at 11363 Nuckols Road (you know, where Cheeburger Cheeburger used to be). I haven’t had the chance to dine there yet, but from all that I’m hearing, it’s worth a trip to enjoy some excellent Greek cooking. Those who have eaten there tell me that the pastichio is wonderful. That’s my touchstone in determining the quality of any Greek restaurant. If the pastichio isn’t superb, I pass on by. So, as soon as I get to my next “blow your diet” day, it’s pastichio for me at Opa. I also hear the gyros are very good, too. I spoke with Maria, the manager and she tells me that they are available with either lamb, beef, chicken or falafel. Maria confirmed what I’ve been hearing from others – everything is delicious. Opa!

THAI ONE ON: If you’re looking for a cool bar scene in the Short Pump/ Glen Allen area, you can’t do better than Ya Ya’s Cookbook in Downtown Short Pump shopping center (11674 W. Broad St.). The friendly, open bar is the first thing that greets you when you walk in or just walk by the open garage doors. And the craft cocktails are quite delightful. However, my fear is that many might pass by thinking this is primarily a bar. It isn’t. This is one of the best Asian and sushi restaurants in the entire Richmond area. If you’re familiar with Mom’s Siam Authentic Thai in Carytown, then you may know its great reputation. You just can’t get any better Thai in town that what Mom’s cooking. Well, think of Ya Ya’s as Mom’s Siam West. Sukanya Palaart, the Mom of Mom’s Siam, is the Ya Ya (affectionate Thai term for grandmother) of Ya Ya’s Cookbook. Everything on the menu is excellent, but on those cold winter days, there’s nothing more inviting than one of their soups. My recommendation: try the Tom Kha Kai Hot Pot.

CRUISING FOR SOME BREWSING. The craft brew scene got much better in Glen Allen with the opening last August of Sedona Taphouse at 5312 Wyndham Forest Drive. That’s the shopping center with the new Publix. The focus is on the beer, says Emma Kelly, one of the restaurant’s managers. “We offer 50 beers on tap and 300 in bottles.” But, she adds, “The focus is also on offering good food to go with your beer.” Aint’ that the truth? Having spoken with the owners previously, I know how important high quality, healthy foods are to them. Sedona even has its own licensed dietician on staff. Emma also tells me that Joe LaLuna is scheduled to perform at the Glen Allen location on February 13. If you haven’t heard Joe, you really want to make plans to be there. He does a fantastic Frank Sinatra tribute show, playing the music of Ol’ Blue Eyes as well as other entertainers of that era. Sedona bills the event as Sinatra Rat Pack Martini Night with special deals on all martinis and cocktails during the show, which runs from about 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

MUSIC WITH YOUR MEAL: Speaking of musical entertainment, JJ’s Grille (10298 Staples Mill Road) continues to book in some of the city’s top musicians virtually every Friday and Saturday night. Some of my favorites who appear fairly regularly at this great

1 tablespoon salt

1/2 tablespoon sugar Red pepper flakes to taste

PREPARATION

FOLLOW US ON SOCIAL MEDIA!

1.) Heat the crock pot: for overnight, set to Low; for 5 hours, set to High. 2.) Dissolve salt and sugar in vinegar. 3.) Place the Boston Butt in the crockpot, fat side up. 4.) Pour the vinegar mixture all over and around the Boston Butt. 5.) Sprinkle the red pepper flakes on top and all around in the liquid. 6.) Put the lid on the crock pot and leave it alone. Do not open lid until pork is done. Rule of thumb...when the bone can be wiggled and is easy to remove, then the pork is done. 7.) When Butt is fully cooked, use a knife to trim off the fat cap. Don’t worry if some of the fat cuttings fall into the vinegar cooking liquid. Fat is flavor. 8.) Carefully remove the Butt from the crock pot (the pork will be very tender and may break apart). 9.) Retain the vinegar cooking liquid in a separate bowl, let it cool and then skim oil from the top. 10.) On a plate, use two forks to shred the pork. Place shredded pork back in the crock pot and pour the liquid over it, as much as you want. This homemade barbecue freezes well. Using a storage container with a tight lid, cover the pork with the vinegar liquid and freeze.

Optional

Stir or whisk together the following ingredients for a quick BBQ sauce: 1 cup ketchup, 1/3 cup Worchestershire Sauce and mustard, garlic powder and cayenne, Texas Pete to taste.

SPENDING TOO MUCH ON INK AND TONER? -

Glen Allen grill and bar are the English Channel, Kari Smith and Pat O’Brien. They also offer team trivia with DJ Eric Lee every Wednesday night at about 6 p.m. Of course, you don’t’ have to wait for the music to enjoy their delicious fare such as fantastic hamburgers, juicy steaks, seafood and some very appetizing appetizers. Nightly specials include a $6 loaded baked potato on Mondays. On Tuesdays, it’s a burger and fries for $6 and on Wednesday, you can enjoy a tender sirloin for only $11. Thursday night is Wing Night, with wings just 79 cents each.

KEEPING IT REAL: If you’re looking for authentic Mexican fare that’s fit for royalty, there’s a cool, little family-run Mexican restaurant in Twin Hickory that I’m always happy to recommend. I’m talking about Rico’s Mexican Grill at 11321-D Nuckols Road. I always enjoy chatting with Carlos Ramirez, Jr., who is the manager for his family’s Glen Allen location. He says that he tries to stay as true as possible to authentic Jalisco-style cooking, citing the Carnitas as a good example. He says the dish, featuring pork chunks is prepared with orange juice for flavoring. “We add a little sea salt to give it a little crunch,” he tells me. The pork is served with Spanish rice, fried beans, guacamole salad, pico de gallo and tortillas. And since the state of Jalisco lies on the Pacific Ocean, you would expect some seafood and you’d not be disappointed. There are several shrimp entrees as well as Tostadas de Ceviche and fish tacos on the menu. Speaking of tacos, Carlos says that their Dollar Taco Day, every Thursday, never gets old. He also tells me that they’re planning some Valentine’s Day specials and suggests you check their Facebook page for details.
