Outlook the word of God in an engaging format, reading like a novel. “I want the people in my congregation, as well as the wider area, to realize the incredible love God has for them and how their story is found in His story,” said Rev. Malcolm Hazell.

Groundbreaking Bible Reading Campaign “The Bible is central to our faith,” said Rev Malcolm Hazell, “ but many people are intimidated by its scope and size. The Story takes us on a journey from Genesis to Revelation together in 31 weeks so everyone understands God’s story and how their story intersects with it.” Research in 2012 found that 8 out of 10 people think that the Bible has something going for it but few read it regularly and even fewer know the main Bible story.

With hundreds of participating churches nationwide, The Story is becoming a movement that is bringing wide-ranging benefits to local churches. Many have reported increased community outreach, increased Biblical literacy, congregational growth and a greater understanding of how God’s story reveals the reasons for the things that happen in man’s story. Chenies Baptist Church would like to invite you to join us for The Story. Sunday services begin at 10.30 am and we will be starting The Story on Sunday 7th September 2014. Chenies Baptist is hoping to fill the gap between approval of the Bible and knowledge of what it says starting with its own congregation. The Story, a Zondervan best-seller, aids increasing Bible literacy, helping readers understand God’s story. Consisting of 31 chapters of carefully-selected scriptures sequenced in chronological order, The Story presents

Lives Well Lived Safe in the arms of Jesus

Testament of Youth The greatest tragedy of war is the loss of so many young lives. In Chenies Baptist Church is a plaque to John Stanley Fursdon, the son of the then minister, who died at Passchendale aged just 21. The 31st July 1917 was the first day of battle at St Julien and part of the offensive at Pilcken Ridge. The area was a sea of mud, flooded by unseasonal rain and scarred by four and a quarter million shells bombarded by the British over the previous 10 days. John was among 600 soldiers who, by the end of the end of day, had advanced just one mile, with 450 killed, wounded or posted missing. John was one of the fallen. This year we remember him and all those who suffered and died in that dreadful war.

At the other end of the scale we were sad to say goodbye in March to one of our oldest church members, Ida Tankins who died peacefully in her family’s presence aged 96. Ida was no stranger to sorrow, losing her first husband Sam in the war. Later she met and married Mont who died a few years ago and was greatly missed. They were known as ‘sweethearts to the end’ and a wonderful testimony to loyal and loving marriage. We especially remember Ida for her steady faith in Jesus, her sweetness of nature, and the simplicity of her prayers. Her final words were - ’safe in the arms of Jesus’. Death wasn’t the end. She knew where she was going.

Was it all a pointless slaughter – or a necessary sacrifice? Families can only lament – but the nation continues to be thankful and pays tribute to all those who, like John, gave their lives for others. But, here was God in all this? There are no glib answers. But Christians know that God isn’t a remote being, vaguely watching from afar. God became a man in Jesus precisely to share in our suffering. Jesus faced rejection, betrayal, injustice, brutal flogging and finally crucifixion. Those who are angry with God can see that God has suffered too, winning for all who believe forgiveness and eternal life. Though John lost his life on earth in World War 1, that is not the end of the story. Jesus’ resurrection shows us that even death does not have the victory when follow Jesus. Still have questions about suffering? Why not explore this question further at: www.uncover.org.uk/more/too-much-pain

Please join us for Remembrance Sunday
