Jazz Royalty in the Regency If William and Kate’s wedding isn’t reason enough to celebrate, Cheltenham Jazz Festival welcomes jazz royalty to town for its week long jamboree this weekend.

April 27, accompanied by band which includes her son, bassist Alec Dankworth. Sir Michael Parkinson leads a jazz royalty themed broadcast of Friday Night is Music Night on Friday, April 29. He’ll be joined by the BBC Concert Orchestra and the Guy Barker Big Band, playing music by ‘Duke’ Ellington, ‘Count’ Basie, Benny Goodman (the King of Swing) and many more.
Leading UK saxophonist Andy Sheppard plays on Saturday, April 30 with his new group Trio Libero. Also on Saturday is Pharoah Sanders who was once described as ‘probably the best tenor player in the world’ by Ornette Coleman.

Possessing one of the most distinctive, harmonically rich tenor saxophone sounds in jazz, Pharoah emerged playing expressionistic free jazz in John Coltrane’s late
ensembles. His later music is guided by more graceful concerns, with a characteristic hard edged lyricism. The final jazz Monarch gracing this year’s festival is Django Bates who celebrates his own jubilee (his 50th birthday) this year. Django plays on Sunday, May 1 and his show, Belovèd Bird, pays tribute to the pioneer of be-bop Charlie Parker, whose music first inspired the pianist as a teenager.

TV STAR BRINGS NEW ORLEANS BLUES TO CHELTENHAM In a major musical coup for the Cheltenham Jazz Festival, Hugh Laurie is confirmed to play in the festival finale on 2nd May. Passionate about blues and piano from an early age, Hugh has recently fulfilled a lifelong ambition by recording his debut album ‘Let Them Talk’. It’s due for release on 9 May and he’s supporting it with live shows in just a handful of locations – including London, Paris, Berlin…and Cheltenham. Hugh admits that New Orleans blues might seem a strange genre for someone with his background, but his passion and love for the music is clear… ‘I love this music, as authentically as I know how, and I want you to love it too. And if you get a thousandth of the pleasure from it that I’ve had, we’re all ahead of the game.’ In this week’s sell out show Hugh and his band will be celebrating New Orleans Blues by playing a selection of tunes originally recorded by some of the greats, including Louis Armstrong, Bessie Smith, Ray Charles and Dr. John.

Jazz’s new wave Portico Quartet
Creating jazz like you’ve never heard before, some real rising stars are appearing at this year’s Cheltenham Jazz Festival. Nominated for the Mercury Music Prize in 2008, Portico Quartet have been compared to Radiohead, E.S.T and The Cinematic Orchestra. Their sound is hookladen and atmospheric, mixing electronica and 21st century jazz
to create melodic, rhythmic music that’s completely their own. London based band Phronesis have also had their fair share of positive press. The Daily Telegraph described them as ‘the most electrifying experience to be had in British Jazz’, they were nominated for the ‘Best Jazz Act’ award in the 2010 MOBO awards, and their recent live album Alive was chosen as Jazz album of the year by Mojo magazine. Other exciting acts performing 1
this year include Lucinda Belle, whose harp led performances are not at all what you’d expect and Norwegian artist Tord Gustavsen who mixes folk music, gospel and cool jazz to create some very beautiful sounds. I first played at Cheltenham Jazz Festival in 2003, and whenever I come back I’m always struck by the sheer breadth of music on offer. Whether you’re into vocalists or pianists, jazz legends or something a bit more edgy, you’ll always find performances to interest you.
Another act I’m really excited about is Andreya Triana (Sunday, May 1). The Brighton based singer/songwriter is a genuine rising star and she’s worked with some great music producers, including another one of my picks of the Festival – Bonobo (Sunday 1 May). His electric live shows have helped make him one of the premier artists on the hot bed of club music that is the independent record label Ninja Tune.
Being asked to be Guest Director for the 2010 Festival was a real privilege. It was great to be able to showcase some of my favourite acts – hopefully everyone enjoyed their shows as much as I did. This year I’ve worked with the team to bring you another great mix of artists.
Finally, you’ve got to book a ticket to see the fantastic Norwegian singer and songwriter Susanna (Saturday, April 30). As well as writing her own original compositions, she’s also added her distinctive style to some classic songs including Love will tear us apart and Hallelujah. Cheltenham Jazz Festival is a highlight of the jazz year. Don’t miss it.
Mercury Prize nominated Kit Downes (Sunday, May 1) is one of the most in demand young pianists on the Jazz scene, and I’m really looking forward to seeing him.

The BBC Radio 2 New Year’s Broadcast of jazz artist Liane Carroll’s Bare Feet & Beehives at Ronnie Scott’s last year was named as the critics’ choice in the Radio Times. Her ‘60s pop music love affair continues at the Cheltenham Jazz Festival this year in a special gala performance on Wednesday 27th April, when she’ll bring to life some of the great songs of the decade, including ‘You Don’t Have to Say You Love Me’ by Dusty Springfield, ‘I Know a Place’ by Petula Clark and ‘Walk on By’ by Dionne Warwick. The event is being held in the wonderfully atmospheric Daffodil restaurant, and all tickets include a champagne reception and three course meal from a set menu.

The Royal Wedding Ceremony is being screened live in Imperial Gardens from 10.30am, with all sorts of other activities going on throughout the day, including a Punch and Judy show and traditional outdoor games. There’ll be stuff for the grown ups too - free music all day on the Budvar Stage, as well as a fully licensed bar and some great international food.

Last year’s Family Breakfast Show was an absolute blast. Meet us at the Town Hall for lively upbeat music and audience interaction. The kids will be up and dancing in no time. The doors will open at 9.30am to allow people plenty of time to purchase their breakfast and find a seat before the event begins. Following the show the four members of Brass Jaw have also agreed to answer any questions from budding young musicians in a short informal question and answer session between 11.40am and 12noon. This will take place in the Town Hall drawing room, next to the main hall, and will have limited capacity. Anyone wishing to attend should come to the drawing room immediately after the breakfast show has finished with their ticket from this event.

Bank Holiday weekend Thinking of ideas to keep the kids entertained in the holidays can be tricky at the best of times, and this year the Easter break is being swiftly followed by a four day weekend at the end of April, meaning there’s even more time to fill.

Cheltenham Science Festival
celebrates 10 years other events too. Find out about the history of cannabis, and how it’s increasingly being recognised for its medicinal qualities in The Science of Cannabis (Tues 7th June, 8.30pm). Or learn what science has to do with music in DJ Physics (Sat 11th June, 4.30pm) and You are What You Hear (Friday 10th June, 6.30pm). Comedian Robin Ince is a fantastic entertainer, and he’s appearing in The School for Gifted Children (Sat 11th June, 8.30pm) – an event filled with comedy, science and music. Another event for a great night out is Gaia: The Cabaret (Thurs 9th June, 7pm and 8.30pm), a unique interactive show full of songs, sketches and surprises exploring how the whole global environment is connected. Finally, graphic novelist Alan Moore is appearing on Friday 10th June, when he’ll be discussing the connection between science and fiction at 6.30pm. Not to be missed. Aside from the great events lined up throughout the 6 days of the Festival, there are lots of other things happening to keep you busy. If you’ve got kids, the Discover Zone is the ideal place for them to get totally engrossed in interactive science. The brand new BBC Science Zone is also an exciting addition, featuring content and people from some great BBC science programmes, and the new LEGO® Education Zone, where kids can get hands on with some fun LEGO challenges. Area 42 is for more grown up fun: go and play with the very latest, cutting edge technology before it’s even on the market.

SCIENCE Q&A Jim Al-Khalili, theoretical physicist, author, and presenter of BBC Four’s Everything and Nothing answers some of our questions. Newton or Einstein? If the choice is between the two’s achievements in science, then Newton is unrivalled. He was the greatest genius who ever lived. If it is their social skills we are comparing, or success with the ladies, then Newton comes a distant second. Fate or choice? Nice question. I would say choice. Despite living in a deterministic Universe in which the future is fixed, this view is only as seen from ‘outside’ our space-time. I believe we still have free will, even if ‘God’ argues that it’s just an illusion. What is it about Cheltenham Science Festival that you love? There are dozens of science festivals all over the UK, all trying to capture that magical something that Cheltenham has, but none can quite match its special atmosphere and buzz. THE NEW PIANO TRADITION Jazzwise Magazine’s Mike Flynn gives us his take on the pianists who are performing at this year’s Festival.
The piano’s rich jazz lineage is enjoying renewed popularity today - evident in the current wave of emerging and established piano masters all harnessing its malleable qualities to forge new sounds and styles. They’re re-energizing the swing and bebop roots of the jazz tradition while embracing classical, folk and rock influences. These contemporary virtuosos spring from all corners of Europe and America and one of today’s most successful and sublimely melodic young players is Norwegian pianist Tord Gustavsen. He brings something of the folkloric Nordic tone to his work, where pristine, glacially beautiful themes mix with an unhurried style to create bewitching moods. These highly melodic qualities are also present in British Mercury Music Prize nominated pianist Kit Downes, who expands on his romantic and classical influences to create his own richly pastoral narratives. Playing music from his new album Quiet Tiger he appears with
Another brilliantly agile musician appearing is US star Jason Moran, a fearsomely gifted pianist who’s as steeped in the music of Thelonious Monk as he is today’s most avant garde and technically challenging classical and jazz forms. His presence in pre-eminent bassist Dave Holland’s talent heavy Overtone Quartet always brings an exciting edge to the music, while his solos build from sensitive melodic themes to free flowing sheets of sound.

Revered UK pianist John Taylor brings a quieter intensity to his exquisite compositions and thoughtful improvisations, particularly in his duet with influential sax virtuoso Julian Arguelles.

They create an exciting three-way dialogue of piano, bass and drums to weave interlocking layers of groove and melody to mesmerising effect.
Combining all of these things and more is internationally acclaimed British pianist and composer Django Bates. His mastery of composition, first established in his now 30 year old group Human Chain and his contributions to seminal 1980s big band Loose Tubes, has always seen him bring irreverent energy and wit together in a whimsically diverse style. Perhaps better known for his use of electric keyboard playing, he’s once again revealed his prowess as a first rate pianist, not least with his uniquely twisted take on the music

The Norwegian Formula The European jazz scene is one of the strongest in Europe, and the team at Cheltenham Jazz Festival have worked closely with the Norwegian Embassy to bring some of the brightest and best Norwegian jazz talent over especially for the Jazz Festival in April. Some exciting acts have been confirmed, including Tord Gustavsen, Stian Westerhus and Susanna. Meurig Bowen guides us through Music 2011 If you’re a music fan but you’re not sure that classical music is strictly your thing, then try The Swingle Singers on Saturday 9 July. With incredible skill and energy, this eight-voice a cappella group breaks down all the barriers, performing anything from jazzed-up Bach to stylish revamps of Annie Lennox, Björk and Beatles numbers. Their beat-boxy vocal percussion has to be seen and heard to be believed. The re-formed Penguin Café (7 July) is also not-to-be-missed. If it’s a full classical music experience that you’re looking for though, it’s got to be one of the two superb symphony orchestras that are coming to Cheltenham this year. Taking a night off from their summertime Glyndebourne residency, the London Philharmonic Orchestra performs on Saturday 2 July and The Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra on Friday 8 July. Music 2011 explores the sacred and wonderful spaces around Cheltenham.
In Gloucester Cathedral, the awardwinning Stile Antico (29 June), takes us back to Renaissance Spain with music by Victoria, Morales, Guerrero and Palestrina, and in Tewkesbury Abbey, there’s an all-Bach programme from The Magdalena Consort (6 July).

Norway’s prince of the keyboard, Leif Ove Andsnes makes his Cheltenham debut on Tuesday 5 July. As the Berlin Philharmonic’s current Artist-inResidence, and with A-list concerto appearances in Chicago, Amsterdam and Dresden this season, Andsnes’ recital of Beethoven and Brahms will be a rightroyal event. Top percussionist Evelyn Glennie gives the world premiere of a new percussion concerto by Joseph Phibbs on Friday 1 July. This concert, featuring our cracksquad of instrumentalists, the Festival Academy, also includes the unusuallytitled Popcorn Superhet Receiver by Radiohead’s Jonny Greenwood.

With so many outstanding concerts and gigs, it can be tricky to know where to start — so we've put together a quick quiz to help you find your perfect event. From Thursday 28 April – Monday 2 May the Budvar Stage will welcome a huge variety of performers, from headline acts to school bands, all for FREE.
As well as Jazz It Up! the kids are sure to enjoy the Family Breakfast Show on Monday 2 May featuring Brass Jaw. Children under 16 are also entitled to half price tickets for Lucinda Belle and Fromage en Feu.

Market Stalls The square will come alive with a variety of stalls selling Festival goodies and music. Check out the CD shop, run by local music retailer Rise, for artists’ albums and merchandise.
Food and drink Sample some of the international cuisine on offer from the food stalls, or relax at the bar and watch some great free music on the Budvar Stage.
CHELTENHAM IMPROVISERS Playhouse, 4pm
Artists from Cheltenham Open Studios, including Trevor Waugh and Robert Goldsmith, have jazzed up the Spa Well in the Town Hall. Take a look; it’s stunning. And it’s free.
