Langy’s favourite son is Qatar-bound By Craig MacKenzie LANGWARRIN soccer club is still celebrating the Socceroos’ qualification for November’s World Cup finals. Bailey Wright is one of Langwarrin’s favourite sons and played a pivotal defensive role in the eventual win over Peru on penalties last week in Qatar. The Socceroos’ defender was mak-
ing his 25th national team appearance and is now vying for a spot in the 23-man squad for the finals. Langwarrin technical director Gus Macleod gave Wright his senior debut in 2009 when the teenager was 16 years old and has followed his career closely. “He’s come a long, long way from the wee five-year-old who started playing for Langy’s juniors all those
years ago,” Macleod said. “You could see at training that he was a man in a young person’s body and his level of commitment was obvious.” Wright spent the first half of the 2009 season playing for Langwarrin’s seniors before going to England to take up a scholarship with Preston North End. He eventually signed as a profes-
sional at Preston and made 179 appearances before switching to Bristol City in 2017. He signed a loan deal with Sunderland in 2020 eventually joining on a two-year deal later that year. With Wright in defence Sunderland won this season’s League 1 play-off final at Wembley in May to secure promotion to the Championship. “For any young kid on the penin-
sula with ambition this shows you what is possible,” Macleod added. “Bailey’s character and work ethic were faultless during his time here and he was just a dream to coach. “He’s a great example to any youngster that if you are prepared to put in the hard yards you can achieve a lot in this game.”

Funding boost for disability program A PROGRAM for people living with disabilities has received a grant funding boost from Frankston Council. Eight businesses were recently awarded the ratepayer-funded business grants. The Perpetual People Co in Frankston received more than $28,000 to go towards setting up a gardening program and a sports program. Perpetual people Co owner Prini Swinton-Lee said that the grant funding will “do so much good to the people that we support.” “It opens up the opportunity for our clients to work in the community as well as become self-sufficient such as learning to grow their own fruit and veggies at home,” she said. A total of $228,000 in grant funding was
awarded. The other recipients were The Living Earth Co, The Commute, Little River Coffeehouse, Hotel Lona, Sea Breeze Dentistry, Ash Marton Realty, and Young Folks Digital. Frankston mayor Nathan Conroy said “sharing this news was very rewarding, each business so deserving in that they will all bring a significant boost to the community and to our economy.” “I’d like to congratulate our successful recipients and thank them for the important contribution they make to our city. Our businesses work exceptionally hard, their passion is inspiring and these innovations are ensuring our satellite city continues on its path to a thriving economy,” he said.

The kindest cut for charity CURLY-haired Somerville resident Emily Cullen has always been complimented on her luscious, strawberry-gold locks. But the peninsula shearer didn’t bat an eye when deciding to cut a good portion of it off to help people who have lost their hair to cancer. After hatching the plan to sell her hair to a wig-making company, Emily put the call out on social media to see if anyone wanted to join her, and before she knew it old school friend Natalie Trotter answered the call. It had been a decade since the former Frankston High School chums had last met, but the common cause and their spirit of generosity brought them together on a mission to make
someone else’s life better. Cullen says both women have been deeply affected by a loved one suffering from cancer and wanted to make a meaningful sacrifice. Cullen said she researched wig-making charities and decided to raise money through the children’s charity Variety Hair for Heart, because the wigs are hand-made and such high quality that children can swim and sleep with the wigs still on. THE Carrum Bowling Club has received a $9000 grants from the state government. The funding will go towards sending women at the club to coaching and umpiring courses. Carrum MP Sonya Kilkenny said
that the grant would help get women into leadership positions at the club. “I’m so proud to see more funding for Carrum Bowling Club to get more women involved in such a great sport. Congratulations to the Carrum Bowling Club on receiving this funding

Photographers project pictures THE best pictures taken by local photographers are being put up in lights across the Kingston area. As part of this year’s OptiKA photo competition, 30 photos are being projected onto sites in Moorabbin and Cheltenham. The theme of this year’s OptiKA competition is “inspiring a zero emissions future”. Kingston mayor Steve Staikos said that the theme “supports the launch of council’s net zero 2030 campaign, part of our climate and ecological emergency response plan which encourages and supports the community to take climate action
alongside council.” “It is going to be fantastic to see these artworks, created by members of our community, inspiring us all to stop, recognise and respond to the climate emergency,” he said. The projections run from 5pm to 10pm between 23 June to 23 July. To see them visit Kingston Arts Centre, the projection space at Kingston City Hall, and the Kingtson council building in Cheltenham. Council calls for action on abandoned site KINGSTON Council has called on Consumer Affairs Victoria (CAV) to acquire the former Berkeley Living complex in Patterson Lakes to ensure the site is not left abandoned for years to come. Kingston Mayor Steve Staikos said the community and Council are deeply concerned that the privately-owned site, which was shut down in 2017, has attracted ongoing graffiti, vandalism and other concerning safety issues. “Unfortunately, until recently there were no provisions that gave CAV the power to pursue the sale of the land,” Cr Staikos said. “I have recently written to the Minister for Consumer Affairs, who has confirmed that following amendments to the Retirement Villages Act 1986 the Director, Consumer Affairs Victoria is currently considering legal intervention to provide for the sale of the land,” Cr Staikos said. “The community has been deeply concerned the complex will remain an eyesore into the future, and it is essential the State Government now acts.” Council acknowledges this is a complex legal issue, as the privately-owned site has 39 individual lots, with many of the owners elderly, or now deceased.

Council has been required to step in and secure the complex from vandalism over recent years and is hoping to recover the circa $100,000 that has been spent to secure the site. The retirement village has been closed since late 2017 due to safety concerns at the site, with CAV stepping in to assist elderly and vulnerable residents to relocate. Council understands that CAV will continue to keep impacted residents aware of the actions it is looking to progress.
Show of ‘solidarity’ at mosque Baitul Salam (House of Peace) mosque in Langwarrin spokesman Aziz Bhatti said a solidarity event at the mosque in Langwarrin on Friday 24 June was held in a bid to promote harmony and understanding between nearby residents and mosque participants. Bhatti said there had been a “great response” by the public and the community leaders to building friendship among all community members since the 21 June incident (“Vandals invade peace mosque” The News 21/6/22). With Liz Bell 0.223. Officers were conducting preliminary breath testing on Skye Road, Frankston around 11.55am when a Mitsubishi sedan was intercepted for a random breath test. The driver, a man in his 40s from Frankston North, was breath tested at the Carrum Downs police station and registered 0.223. The driver was served with a notice of immediate suspension for 12 months and will be summonsed to court at a later date for drink driving offences. Impairment offences are one of the main factors which contribute to the Road Toll and many serious injury collisions.

Police were called on 18 June after someone was spotted driving a motorised esky on Lyrebird Drive in Carrum Downs. With the help of the police helicopter, a police van was able to locate the esky. Police allege the 17-year-old driving the esky was using it as a “mobile marijuana unit”. Police seized marijuana, scales, and a bong.

Police say criminals breaking into homes and swiping car keys while unwitting owners sleep is still a problem on the Mornington Peninsula. They are urging home occupants to lock their doors at night and do not keep car keys in obvious sight. According to 2020 statistics from the National Motor Vehicle Theft Reduction Council, seven in 10 cars are stolen with their own keys. In Mornington for the year 2020/2021, statistics show 23 cars were reported stolen, with 60 per cent of those taken from residences. In Frankston, including Frankston North and Frankston South 121 cars were stolen.

Railway Commissioners’ visit to the peninsula Compiled by Cameron McCullough THE Railway Commissioners’ Messrs Clapp, Miscamble and Shannon, paid their periodical visit of inspection to the stations on the Frankston–Stony Point and Mornington lines yesterday. They were met at Frankston by Crs Oates Mason, Wells, May, Mr J. E. Jones, shire secretary, Colonel Lazarus, shire engineer, Messrs Jas. Lambie and Young, (Progress Association.) In reply to a request that a certain area near the entrance to the sub–way should be reserved as a cab stand, Mr Clapp replied that provision had been made by the department in the direction indicated. He declined emphatically, to render financial assistance to the council in constructing the road from the goods shed to Beach Street, and could not agree to improve the facilities for, trucking stock at the Frankston cattle yards. He told Mr Lambie that the question of preserving the trees near the sub–way would be considered later, and the same answer was given to a request that a dock be provided at the Young Street entrance for loading produce and other perishable goods. *** THERE was a large attendance at the meeting of the Frankston Progress Association held on Tuesday evening last, the president, Mr. J. D. Jennings, in the chair. Messrs. Jas. Lambie and Jas. Haggart were proposed as new members, and Mr. Haggart responded in reply to the President’s welcome. The President expressed satisfac-
tion at seeing such a large attendance, and extended a hearty welcome to the visitors, who included several old residents. Correspondence was read relating to the subway at Frankston railway station, in which the Commissioners indicated that the original plan for carrying the subway right through would be adhered to. (Applause.) HIGH SCHOOL The Hon. A. Downward wrote, stating that the old cricket ground was a temporary reserve, and forwarded plan showing area proposed to be made available for High School. The President said it could be accepted as a fact that unless the Education Department was given control of the whole of the area, Frankston would not get its High School. Mr. Wheeler said if the reserve was only a temporary one the Lands Department should transfer to the Education Department. He referred to the splendid High School at Hamilton which he had recently inspected. The building alone had cost £10,000, and the residents had provided 20 acres of land in a town where land was selling at £100 a foot. The people there realised the value of having a High School in the district. Mr. Joseph McComb said Frankston had four other reserves independent of the old cricket ground and the park. They were situate one near Deane’s, one near Coxall’s, one at Baxter’s and Humpheries’ reserve. Why not sell one of these, and purchase Mr. O’Grady’s property on
Melbourne road for the High School. Mr. L. J. Ward said if the Department could not secure the old cricket reserve, the High School would probably be lost to Frankston for all time. Cr. Wells said a special meeting of the Shire Council was being held on Thursday, 29th inst., when the question would be again debated. OLD PIONEERS’ MEMORIAL Cr. F. H. Wells introduced the matter of erecting a memorial to the old pioneers of Frankston, and suggested an arch over the cemetery gates to cost from £40 to £50, with names engraved on brass plate. Messrs. Legge, Oliver, Lawrey, and others did not favor the cemetery proposal. Mr. Wheeler thought if anything was to be erected at the cemetery it should be in the form of a latch gate. In discussion, it was pointed out that the old pioneers referred to were all dead, some of the names mentioned being Messrs. William Davey, John Davey, Willie Davey, John Court, Ritchie, Petrie, Croskell, Box, Oliver, Sage, Baxter, Patterson, McComb, Bentick, Lawrey, Renouf, Thompson, Carr, Dean, McMahon, and others. The President jocularly referred to Messrs. Tom and Jos. McComb, Renouf, Wells, and others present at the meeting as “the boys”. Cr. Wells moved, and Mr. Jos. McComb seconded, that a suitable memorial be erected in Frankston to the memory of the old pioneers. Carried. Mr. S. Lawrey thought it would be advisable not to start collecting till the
Soldiers’ Memorial was provided for. Mr. Young favoured this, and moved that a sub-committee be appointed to select suitable site, suggest form of memorial with estimate of cost, and report at next meeting of Progress Association. Seconded by Mr. Lowrey, and carried. The following were appointed a sub committee: Cr. Wells, Messrs. Jos. McComb, S. Lawrey, S. Oliver, T. McComb, M. Brody, Jennings, Young, Renouf, Colonel Lazarus and Wells sen. TREE PLANTING IN PLAYNE ST The Secretary said he had been asked by Mr. Lambie to bring forward the matter of planting trees down the centre of Playne street. Mr. Lambie suggested that the Council should be approached by petition. Mr. Lawrey said it was not 12 months since a large petition was sent to the Council protesting against a rockery in Playne’ street. Mr. Wheeler said that the rockery as proposed was 10 or 12 ft. wide. A row of trees would not occupy much more than 1 ft. It was resolved, on the motion of Messrs. Young and Hoggart, that the question stand over till next meeting. *** MR and Mrs A. K. T. Sambell were the guests of their Excellencies at the State Government House, last week. *** MISS D. Gregory, whose marriage to Mr C. Pike, of Peechelba, takes place on the 8th July, is to be entertained at a public social in the Frankston
Mechanics’ Hall on Wednesday night, 5th July. A cordial invitation is extended to all friends and well-wishers. *** THE opening of the Jumble Fair, in aid of the funds of the Frankston Football Club, takes place tonight at 8 o’clock, in the Masonic Hall, in Young Street, and will be continued tomorrow (Saturday’ night), at the same hour. *** AN indication of Frankston’s progress is supplied by an announcement in our advertising columns this week to the effect that the local branch of the National Bank of Australasia will in future be open daily from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m and Saturday noon. Residents will no doubt show their appreciation of this forward move in a practical way. “The Standard” has been hammering at the question of giving Frankston proper banking facilities for the past 3 years. *** MR Geo Farmer, who had his finger caught in the belting at the Frankston Electric Light works early this week, is making satisfactory progress, after several days spent in hospital. *** THE members of the Frankston Branch of Returned Soldiers invite the Dads and Mums to a social in the Mechanics’ on Monday evening next. *** From the pages of the Frankston and Somerville Standard, 30 June 1922

Stonecats continue their dominance, Langwarrin first-quarter blitz sets up win MPNFL

DIVISION ONE
FRANKSTON YCW continued their domination in MPNFL Division One with a convincing win over Dromana. The Tigers didn’t fire all day, and after trailing by 17 points at the first break, continued to fall behind. The Stonecats ended up 51-point winners. Joshua Patullo kicked four goals for Frankston YCW, while Jordon Andrews kicked two of the three majors for the day for Dromana. Bonbeach and Mt Eliza battle out a nail-biter, with Bonbeach getting over the line by a point. Mt Eliza’s kicking in front of goal cost them the game with 11 minors in their 41 points. On the upside, it was quite the comeback. The Sharks got off to a flying start and were 19 points up at quarter time, with the Redlegs notching up two minor scores. Mt Eliza clawed back to be just a point down at three quarter time. Bonbeach managed to hold them off though, and the final score was 6.6 (42) to 5.11 (41). Pines hit the accelerator in the second half to secure a strong win against Edithvale-Aspendale. They never looked in trouble but notched up 51 points after half time against the Eagles. Dylan Williams and Russell Gabriel both kicked four goals for the winners and Michael Meehan kicked three for Edithvale-Aspendale. The final score was 14.7 (91) to 7.10 (52). It looked like it was going to be an easy day for Frankston Bombers, taking on Sorrento at Baxter Park. At quarter time, they’d established a 26-point lead against the Sharks, after a five goal to one haul. Sorrento came out punching in the second quarter and piled on four goals to two to narrow the margin to 13 points at the main break. By the end of the quarter, Sorrento were in the lead, and Frankston could not peg it back. Sorrento ended up three-point winners with the final score 12.9 (81) to 11.12 (78). on Saturday, but they did manage their first win for the season against Red Hill. Rosebud led at every break, but only just, and the final siren saw them five points ahead at 8.4 (52) to 7.5 (47).

LANGWARRIN’S smashing first quarter cemented their win against Karingal on Saturday. The score was 50 points to a single behind at the first break, and Karingal must have been dreading the final score. To their credit, Karingal steadied the ship, and while they didn’t manage
much of a fight-back, it didn’t get too much worse. The final score saw the Kangaroos walk away 64-point winners 17.9 (111) to 7.5 (47). Crib Point struggled against Rye but mounted a comeback from a significant first quarter deficit. Down by 31 points at the first break, they managed to claw it back to being just two straight kicks behind at the final siren. Crib Point are still to notch up a win for the season. Chelsea had an easy day against Seaford Tigers, gradually increasing the margin through the day. The result never looked in doubt,
with the only takeaway for Chelsea being accuracy with 19 points in their haul. The final score was 10.19 (79) to 5.8 (38). Mornington notched up a muchneeded win against Devon Meadows. The Bulldogs lead by a single point at quarter time but stretched the lead through the day to end up 20 points ahead at the final siren, 15.4 (94) to 10.14 (74). The Panthers may be licking their wounds and wondering what may have been if they’d been straighter in front of goal. Hastings let a strong first quarter lead slip against Somerville.
They were 17 points up at quarter time, but by half time the lead had been cut to a single point. It was neck and neck through the third quarter before Somerville put on three unanswered goals in the final quarter to run out 20-point winners. The final score was 9.12 (66) to 7.4 (46). Tyabb got off to a steady start against Pearcedale and were a point up at quarter time. But it was downhill from there with Pearcedale adding nine goals to six goals for the rest of the afternoon to take the chocolates. The final score was 12.8 (80) to 9.9 (63).
Hunter finds success with Thronum progeny HORSE RACING

Hunter’s two-year-old gelding Thron Bone landed an impressive three-quarters of a length victory over the highly touted filly Ghaanati in the 1100m sprint. Letting down with a strong finish in the straight to reel in the unbeaten filly, Mornington-based trainer Jerome Hunter was thrilled to see the promising two-year-old begin to put it together on the track. “He showed us a lot of promise in the autumn,” Hunter said post-race.

Fisher to take over at Baxter

By Craig MacKenzie BAXTER announced on Monday (27 June) that Stephen Fisher would take over from George Hughes as senior coach for the 2023 season. Fisher will be in charge of a senior squad on a full-time basis for the first time but has an extensive playing and coaching background. The 55-year-old played with Chelsea, Frankston Pines, Frankston City and Botany Park and his coaching career kicked off at Lawton Park when he coached his son Dylan in Langwarrin’s juniors. “Gus Macleod was instrumental in getting me to do coaching courses and he recommended me to Football Victoria to get involved in coach education,” Fisher said. With the advent of the NPL Fisher joined Springvale White Eagles and later Dandenong City before becoming Langwarrin’s first NPL technical director in 2018. He has also coached Doveton’s reserves in NPL3 so moving to Baxter Park and dropping to State 4 level was unexpected. “I’ve got a great affiliation with Baxter and have a lot of friends down there, people I’ve known for years,” he said. “I’ve held some sessions down there and I know the playing group pretty well so I’m going into this role with my eyes wide open. “I see this as a really good fit and I think this club has massive potential both on and off the pitch.” Fisher’s player network is extensive and he already has some new signings firmly in his sights. “The actual core of the playing group is good but we’ll also look at recruiting young players who might be disillusioned by lack of opportunity at NPL level and older players that can do a mentoring job and aren’t driven by how much money they can get each week. “First and foremost though we’ve got to retain the players we’ve got because we’ve got some very good players and we need to ensure that they’re happy to stay onboard.” Fisher is expected to speak to striker David Stirton “to see just how keen he is to play with his mates” and he’ll also speak to former Langy and Doveton youngster Brodie Jones. There are others currently playing but he won’t name them “because that’s not fair to them or their clubs”. “The fact that no-one gets paid at Baxter restricts who you can recruit but one thing I do know is that anyone

In State 5 Rosebud lost 4-0 away to Casey Panthers and Mount Martha lost 3-0 away to Hampton Park United.

The 38-year-old defender has played in the A-League and overseas and has had stints at multiple NPL outfits. “We needed to fill a void at the back caused by injuries and Ramazan obviously is an experienced player who has played at a very good level,” Langy gaffer Scott Miller said. “He’d been coming down and watching us for a few weeks and knew a lot of the players already so there was no problem fitting in with the group.” Langwarrin also signed former junior Nathan Lynders last week from Dandenong Thunder as its goalkeeping stocks were severely depleted by the departures of Jake Richardson due to work commitments and Branton Kindler who is holidaying overseas.

In State 3 Frankston Pines will return to its traditional headquarters at Monterey Reserve on Saturday 9 July. The club will revert to a Saturday afternoon schedule when Bayside Argonauts arrive at the new multi-million dollar facility for the reserves clash at 1pm followed by the senior match at 3pm. Last Friday night Pines said farewell to the synthetic pitch at Wedge Road, Carrum Downs, that has hosted its home fixtures since 2020. A long-range strike from Sava Baledrokadroka from a tight angle on the right in the 8th minute proved decisive as Pines ran out a 1-0 victor over Noble Park United. In State 4 Chelsea edged Somerville 2-1 in Friday night’s derby at Edithvale Recreation Reserve with both Chelsea goals coming in the opening 11 minutes of the second period following a first-half stalemate. In State 1 Mornington got back on track with a 4-0 away win over Bentleigh United Cobras on Saturday. The Seagulls took a 1-0 lead into the main break thanks to a Luke Goulding goal direct from a corner. Two second-half goals from Josh Hine – with assists from Rhys Craigie and substitute Leandro Salazar – and an own goal from Bentleigh’s Mitchell Walsh made the trip to Victory Park well worthwhile. In State 2 both Peninsula Strikers and Skye United lost 4-0 away from home last weekend to Knox City and Doncaster Rovers respectively. Strikers remain in second spot with a five-point buffer over third-placed Old Scotch.
