is the season to be jolly, and I am full of good cheer to have joined the Little London team at what is without doubt my favourite time of the year. The clocks have gone back, the leaves have fallen and it’s time to cosy up in front of the fire and get ready for Christmas. If you’re yet to think about what to put under the tree for your Little Londoners, then you’ve come to the right place. Our festive shopping pages (p.21) and dedicated Christmas gift guide (p.28) are chock-full of ideas, while our two fabulous fashion shoots (p.56, p.76) have all the inspiration you need to keep them feeling cosy and looking cool. Christmas is all about anticipation, and inside there are lots of ideas on how to ramp up the excitement in your household. Leonora Bamford shows you how to make your own tree decorations in Get Crafty (p.74), Carole Middleton puts the Ho! Ho! Ho! into party planning (p.38), and the Cooking Them Healthy girls offer some fun and festive recipes to get little ones in the spirit (p.86). We’re already in celebratory mood, though, having just held our inaugural Little London Awards. Hosted by Caprice Bourret, we championed excellence in the baby, pregnancy and parenting industry. We reveal the 7
winners and take you behind the scenes at the event. Fresh from her win at the awards, we also chat to designer Rachel Riley about her eponymous brand. Talking of designers, we were lucky enough this issue to step inside Preen Mini’s studio to talk fashion and family with its creators, Justin Thornton and Thea Bregazzi (p.50). Waking up at the top of the stairs with my sister after falling asleep trying to spy on Father Christmas and Terry's Chocolate Oranges - I had one in every stocking. What's on your wishlist this year?

What’s your first memory of Christmas?
There was a tradition in our family that my dad would dress as Santa and we would visit our family friends. It was immense fun! How do you get in the festive spirit?
We make our own Christmas decorations. We decorate windows in the house with snowflakes, making it look quite magical.

he was a familiar face on some of Britain’s best-loved TV shows, but Lisa Faulkner’s career took an unexpected turn when she claimed the Celebrity MasterChef crown. Now she is super busy writing cookbooks, being a brand ambassador for Hotpoint and, most importantly, being a mum to her adopted daughter, Billie, aged eight. Where do you live in London and what do you love most about the area?
North London. It’s amazing. I can walk to the Heath. I have lived all around: Finsbury Park, West Hampstead, Muswell Hill and East Finchley. You’ll never get me out of North London. Describe a typical weekend in your house?
A lot of weekends are taken up travelling with work, but it’s my favourite thing to be at home. Usually I’m ferrying my daughter, Billie, to drama and then on a Saturday afternoon we’ll either go to the cinema, Ally Pally or go horseriding. What is your favourite family spot in London?
I love horseriding at the London Equestrian Centre in Mill Hill. I learnt to ride there with my daughter. We started six months ago and we absolutely love it. And what if you want to escape the city?
I did a job in Pembrokeshire and it was incredible. I went riding on the beach and I’m taking Billie back there for a holiday. We love Cornwall, too. Where do you go when you have some time to yourself?

What are you up to work-wise?
I’ve just finished a coastal cottage series for This Morning about food and cooking in Pembrokeshire and recently launched Hotpoint’s Love Your Kitchen campaign to get families cooking creatively together. I’ve also been doing stuff for The Food Network and then there are all the food shows. How do you juggle work with being a mum?
I feel constantly guilty. That constant feeling of: I’ve got to be here, be there, do this. You try to be the best you can be, but sometimes things have to give. I try very hard to be at parents’ evening, to bake cakes for sales and pick up Billie as much as I can. It’s one of those things. I don’t know if there is a way of getting it right. Some weeks you feel on top of it, other weeks you’re like, ‘Oh my God!’ Do you and Billie cook up a storm together?
We cook together all the time. She’s started making soups. It’s her favourite thing to do: whizzing, chopping and tasting as she goes along. It’s just ace. I love the fact that she wants to cook. I cooked from the age of five or six and she’s the same. Where do you shop for Billie?
I do yoga all the time. And, if John [Torode] and I are both free, I love to have lunch somewhere nice. There’s a brilliant restaurant called Primeur in North London. Otherwise, I just love the cinema.
At the moment, she’s having growth spurt after growth spurt. We get stuff from H&M then, if we want something special, I’ll go to AlexandAlexa or that lovely shop in Primrose Hill, ilovegorgeous.
You adopted your eight-year-old daughter Billie after three rounds of failed IVF. How tough was that experience?
What would you choose to cook or eat as your last supper?
I don’t know what was more difficult, the adoption process or IVF. It’s all a great big struggle but, when you get your baby and become a mum, it all goes out the window and you forget the struggle. How has motherhood changed your life?

THE RUN-UP TO CHRISTMAS (with apologies to Clement Clarke Moore)
T’was four months before Christmas, when at the top of the house The stockings came out on the demands of my spouse. She likes to start planning, she’s ‘festivities’ hard, And in early September she sends her first card. As autumn arrives, the kids whip up a storm, ’bout stockings and presents at the end of their dorm. So Santa’s attendance is used as a bribe; Strict law and order for our small person tribe. T’was three months before Christmas, now it really begins Parcels at the post office, deliveries by the bins; Amazon, eBay, you name the shop, Boxes and boxes, she simply won’t stop. There are presents for one, presents for all! Presents fill the spare room, presents fill the hall. Presents for godchildren, nieces, nephews too, Teachers, cousins, siblings, we’ve even one for you… T’was two months before Christmas, home’s full to the brim She buys the biggest tree, one that only just fits in. Dad then saws off too much, and swears ‘Oh sh..!’ Before the kids hang the baubles, as many as can fit. 36

For the next four weeks, I watch the pine needles drop, And the Hoover’s doing overtime, almost non-stop. For the wife likes a tidy home to honour St Nick, And frankly by this point, he can’t come too quick. T’was the month before Christmas, when the children go nuts, With non-stop e-numbers and endless ‘Nos’ and ‘Buts’. The birth of Jesus Christ, our Lord and our Saviour Has by now been overrun by non-stop bad behaviour. The final weeks of school sees the teachers fire-fighting, And bizarrely in nativity my son is dressed as ‘lightning’. My daughter plays a donkey, though, her high point is a bray Not quite mother’s hopes for Mary, snuggling baby in the hay. T’was the week before Christmas, and the dreaded works do; Stuck between Neil from accounting and our HR leader, Sue. In paper hats we blend carols with business strategy, If truth be told, I’ve had more fun Hoovering underneath the tree. But home is warm and fuzzy, and all coming together, The turkeys in the freezer, there’s snow among the weather. The kids are writing Christmas lists to send to Santa Claus, After all the madness getting here, I’d love to just press pause. T’was the day before Christmas, when I suddenly get the fear Wife’s stocking looks thin on gifts: ‘There’s not enough in here!’ Cue the annual last-gasp dash to buy a load of ‘stuff’, But Christmas shopping at the garage is never quite enough. And then it comes to wrapping, not an alpha male’s task, But along with things like map reading, there is no way you can ask! Instead, just use masking tape and newspaper galore, So much that getting at the gift takes Christmas day and more. T’was the night before Christmas, and a race to get all done, It’s been four months of planning, and we’ve presents by the tonne. “Now Dasher, now Dancer, now Prancer and Vixen! We’ve got lot of stops to make, and the clock has started ticking.” Finally the children put out pies for Père Noël, Dad adds a glass of whisky, ‘To help Santa’s night go swell!’ Then it’s herding cats and pushing water up the hill, Keeping small ones in their bed all night and making them lie still. T’was the morning of Christmas, four o’clock since you’re asking, And upstairs there’s singing and crashing and dancing, Santa climbed the chimney just before the day began But joy for the rest of us, 20 hours left to run! After decorating, prepping and cooking and more It’s a walk before church then face-stuffing galore. The turkey, the trimmings, the pudding, the booze! Perfection as always, topped off with a snooze. T’was the day after Christmas, when all through the house Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse. ur very first Little London Awards took place in early October to recognise the crème de la crème of the baby, children and parenting industry, expertly hosted by model, TV personality, businesswoman and mother-of-two Caprice Bourret. A glamorous 200-strong crowd descended on The Hurlingham Club for the GapKids-sponsored event to celebrate the launch, find out this year’s winners and enjoy the free-flowing Champagne and delectable canapés. Set up to champion excellence in every area, the awards featured 30 main categories covering everything from fashion, interiors and health to food, travel and toys. And what made them even more special was that they were voted for by thousands of you, our wonderful readers. The final four categories: Best New Brand, Best New Product, Best Product and Brand of the Year were decided earlier by our expert panel of judges, who, along with Caprice, included My Baba founder Leonora Bamford, The Bump Class’ Marina Fogle, Rebecca Maberly, of The Doctor and Daughter’s Guide to Pregnancy, Jenny Scott, of Mothers Meeting, and our very own editor Kate Finney.

M
eet Justin Thornton and Thea Bregazzi, the duo behind the achingly hip London-based label Preen and parents of Fauve, seven, and Blythe, three. Since launching their label in 1996, the pair’s very British approach to design – part punk, part Victoriana, part vintage and part rock‘n’roll – has seen them grow from a studio-shop in Portobello Road to multiple big-name retailers across the globe. In 2008, they debuted a contemporary and more affordable offshoot of the brand, Preen Line, and then in 2014 they launched Preen Mini, a mini-me children’s line that mirrors the ideology of its ready-to-wear siblings. Their success has been cemented by a loyal celebrity following that includes the likes of Gwyneth Paltrow, Michelle Obama and Sarah Jessica Parker. When we arrive at their West London Studio and weave past the bustle of seamstresses, Justin is found helping Fauve play dress-up while Thea is perched behind the desk with Blythe on her lap. There’s not a hard-nosed fashion critic in sight. Instead, the home of one of Britain’s most successful independent fashion brands is a welcoming, pretention-free, child-friendly zone strewn with sketches, moodboards, clothes, the odd Barbie and colouring books – MAC, no less. It is, of course, half-term. Justin and Thea’s ability to unify their work and family life is immediately apparent.

consuming but at least we both understand all the pressures involved,” Justin tells us. Thea collects Fauve after school every day – time she treasures – and takes one day off a week to spend with Blythe, a liberty and luxury of working alongside a compassionate partner. “We never lose ourselves in the industry as we have so much happening outside of that, with the kids,” she explains. Justin and Thea were showing in New York, which cemented their international status, but after Thea became pregnant with Blythe and missed a show – a time they describe as “too stressful” – it seemed practical to decamp back to London. Justin is quick to credit London’s “great reputation in business and creativity” as a contributing factor, too. Now, they wouldn’t be anywhere else. As a family they love spending time at the Science Museum, V&A and Serpentine Galleries allowing culture and creativity to flow through the generations. Fauve already eagerly admits to enjoying “making things” and the fashion-design process. “I like to help design clothes,” she chimes. “Once I designed a dress and it was in a fashion show.” Justin confirms, “She likes to get pins, ribbons and fabrics, and make up designs. Once she pinned beads on one of the garments and it looked so great it inspired us to do more.” He also insists involving the children in the business is integral to the success of their work-life balance: “It’s nice that they know what we do. The business is a very important part of our life, so it’s important that they see the fun as well as the graft.” The children are welcomed in the workplace and it’s through the growth of the Thornton-Bregazzi family that the Preen Mini line was born. “The way we design is

After the pair agreed to focus on a small version of the main line, the collection came to life in 2014 offering Preen Mini designs for ages two to 12. The original concept stemmed from Thea wanting to dress like her mum. “I just remember that it was my favourite thing that I was wearing something like my mum. I felt so grown-up.” The same formula, styles and prints carry through from the main line, including the signature opposing themes. This collection sees the punky tartan teamed with embroidery inspired by a vintage scarf. “The party dresses have become more important to the collection and we’ve learnt customers want special pieces,” Justin explains. You can find rainbow-sequinned dresses that mirror the party pieces of the main collection. Comfort and practicality factor, too, with Fauve and Blythe giving their input. “We loved the idea of a three-quarter-length sleeve, but the kids won’t wear them. We have to listen to that because we want children to be comfortable,” Thea tells us. With tops smattered with floral prints and tartan dresses trimmed with subtle frills, the offering is as easy-to-wear as it is alluring. 55
Children’s clothes offer the couple a respite from womenswear. “We love the look on people’s faces when they first see the collection. That’s what’s been so great about Preen Mini: there is so much joy behind childrenswear,” Justin continues. The brand’s success is gathering pace, too, and Justin and Thea are keen to expand: “We want Preen Mini to grow. We’ve been doing a few special cardigans with sequins and embroideries, but we’re going to expand the knitwear for the next season. We’d like to do shoes and accessories, too.” Also on the agenda for next year are a few family escapes. “What we really want to do is the road trip from New York to Martha’s Vineyard and drive all the way up through Maine. We also have a little bolthole in Suffolk, which we go to a lot. We grew up in the country climbing trees and running around fields so we’d like them [Fauve and Blythe] to escape the city and spend time there, too. And we’d also love to take them to Port Eliot Festival in Cornwall.” With the burgeoning empire that is Preen by Thornton Bregazzi, Preen Line, eyewear, footwear and Preen Mini, it’s a wonder they find the time. EC I visited Oliver’s studio and said, “I need a studio. I need to be surrounded by artists,” and he said, “You have a laptop and you don’t really need a studio for that.” I was very jealous because it was in this sunny street.
What do you enjoy about Ireland? OJ Family and decent pint of Guinness.
EC I’ll agree with that. I also love Oliver’s family [laughs]. I live there so it’s home for me, and my family and friends are there.
Has being a parent changed the way you both tell stories? OJ I’ve only got three months under my belt,
so it’s too early to tell. I’m reading stories to him, but I haven’t been involved in a project from the conception stage since he’s been born. EC I think it changes the way you do everything because your decision-making process has an extra element. You can’t help thinking, “Will my son like this?” What is the most enjoyable part of creating a children’s book?
Imaginary Fred is a heart-warming tale about the true meaning of friendship. Have you two been friends for a while?
You were both out of your comfort zones in terms of book length. How did you handle this?
OJ Are we friends? When did that start? Ha!
EC With an illustrated piece you have to think
EC ‘Friends’ is a strong word. Acquaintances? We met two years ago on the New Zealand book festival circuit and decided we wanted to work together somehow. OJ Eoin had the idea and emailed me about two weeks later. EC I thought I might be being a bit keen, but I knew this idea might work for Oliver as there’s a heart-warming sensibility.
in those terms, which I hadn’t been. Oliver sat me down and said, “Sometimes we show the words with pictures,” and I said, “Aaaah, now I understand!” That was a lightbulb moment. OJ With picture books, sometimes the art drives the story, but this story was so well set that I treated it like a chapter book to begin with and more like a picture book later.
How did the collaboration work with you both being in different countries?
OJ For me, it’s going to get good fish and
OJ Skype.
EC As simple as that. I sent him a manuscript and Oliver sent me one illustration of Fred to see if I liked that direction. I totally loved it. I really looked forward to those Skype calls when Oliver would hold up the pictures. It was a thrill. OJ Once we got to the rough layouts, we printed that into a physical thing just to test the pace of it. I sent that in the post. EC It is wonderful when you have the physical page in your hands. It’s much nicer.
What do you enjoy most about London?
chips. Living in Brooklyn, you don’t get good fish and chips. My brother lives here, so I love catching up with him. I love London. EC I love coming here. I always stay in Soho, so I know those streets but that’s all. I love going to the theatre. I go down to the Comedy Store in Leicester Square, which is great. How are you inspired by where you live? OJ Very inspired. My
studio is in Brooklyn so I’m surrounded by artists. It’s a real community and a wonderful source of perspective and shared skill that informs the way I work. 70

Oliver, you also work as a fine artist. How do you feel the illustration world is represented by the visual arts world? OJ Illustration is still a dirty word - they
are never called illustrations in the fine art world. But because picture books are more in fashion, it’s more socially acceptable to be making them and be in the fine art world.
What are you reading at the moment? EC Oliver is reading The Sisters Brothers by Patrick deWitt and I’m reading the follow-up, which is Undermajordomo Minor. It’s my favourite book of this year.
Oliver, your beautiful picture book Lost and Found was made into an animation. Do you have plans for any more animations? OJ I made some stop-motion stuff with a
friend called Mac, which was held together with spit and Sellotape. There’s a certain charm in that. So, yes, lots of plans, but for now it’s all top secret.
Where can we catch you both on tour? OJ Manchester, Dublin and Belfast next.
EC We’re looking forward to Belfast because our family and friends will be there. It should be a good laugh. L

GLUE CHRISTMAS DECORATION Homemade decorations are all the rage and, if you do them year after year, you can see how much your child has grown. You will need: Wax or parchment paper • PVA glue • Christmas cookie cutter • Glitter • Twine • Put a Christmas cookie cutter on the wax or parchment paper and get children to fill the shape with a layer of glue. • Cover with glitter and leave to dry. • When dry, peel off and make a small hole, loop the twine and hang the decoration on your tree.

Baked Apples
Ingredients 1 apple • Pinch of raisins • Teaspoon of butter • Teaspoon of honey • Core the apple and score a line around the middle with a knife • Stand the apple in a piece of foil in a baking dish, and pack the hole with the butter, raisins and top with honey • Bake for 30 to 40 minutes • Enjoy with cream, ice cream or on its own

You will need: Clear glass or mason jar • Vegetable oil • Food colourings • Fill the glass three-quarters with water. • Gently pour the oil on top of the water. • Add a few drops of each colour of food colouring to the oil. • Watch as it filters through to the water and creates mesmerising patterns.

These oakcakes are made without refined sugar or other nasties to help fight the sweet frenzy
With so many sweet treats available during the festive season, these simple yet delicious oatcakes are a welcome alternative. They provide a perfect base for dips or are lovely topped with festive cheese and a dollop of chutney. Have fun experimenting with different shapes and additional flavours. Makes at least 20 • 200g rolled porridge oats (140g blitzed in a food processor and 60g whole) • 100ml to 130ml boiling water • 20g unsalted butter (added to the boiling water) • 1 tsp sea salt flakes • A few grinds of black pepper • Rosemary/thyme/lavender (optional) Equipment: Rolling pin Cutters Method: Pre-heat the oven to 180°C. Place 140g of the porridge oats in a blender and grind to a fine powder. Then place them in a bowl, add the salt along with any

fresh or dried herbs. Add the butter to the boiling water, then pour almost all the water in the oats and stir well with a wooden spoon. If the mixture feels sticky, don’t add any more water but, if it’s dry and floury, gradually add the rest. You want to have a firm dough. Leave the mixture to sit for 5 minutes to allow the water to cool slightly and for the oats to swell. Place a little flour on a work surface and flour your hands. Turn the dough on to the work surface and knead for 30 seconds. It should feel soft but firm and not sticky. Roll out the dough on a floured surface with a rolling pin to approximately a £1 coin thickness. Cut out your desired shapes and then put each oatcake on a floured baking sheet. Place at the top of the oven for 15 minutes, turn over and return for another 10 minutes. You want the oatcakes to be completely cooked and dry all the way through. Keep in an airtight container until ready to use.

CHRISTMAS CHOCOLATE TRUFFLES Despite tasting indulgent, these contain no refined sugar, and good-quality dark chocolate is packed with antioxidants. Wherever possible, choose organic dairy. Despite the cocoa content, children love them. Makes at least 20 • 180g 70% dark chocolate • 220ml organic double cream • 20g unsalted organic butter Method: Break the chocolate into small pieces and place in a mixing bowl. Pour the cream into a small saucepan and bring to the boil. When it is bubbling around the edges, remove the pan from the heat and pour over the broken chocolate pieces. Combine with a spatula or wooden spoon. When the chocolate is melted, add in the butter – there should be enough residual heat for it to melt. Place in the fridge until solid. Once solid, take a dessert spoon and scoop out truffle-sized lumps. With clean hands, take a chocolate ’lump’ and roll into rough-shaped balls. Sprinkle some cocoa powder on a plate and roll the truffles to coat. You can also roll them in toppings such as chopped nuts, freeze dried raspberries or grated coconut, which all work brilliantly.

SPICED ORANGES Although these aren’t edible, they make a lovely gift. The soothing cinnamon smell and soft scent of the orange will make any room smell Christmassy. Makes 3-4 (depending on the number of layers) Ingredients: • 2 oranges • 3-4 cinnamon sticks • Coloured twine – we like red and white, but ribbon or string also work Method: Pre-heat the oven to 140°C. Line a baking sheet with nonstick baking parchment. With a sharp knife, cut your oranges into thin slices. Place on the baking sheet and put them in the oven. Bake for 45 minutes to 1 hour, turning half way. You want them to be completely dry. Tie your twine around a cinnamon stick and secure with a knot, then thread through the centre of the orange slices, layering them as stacks. Create a loop at the top so they can be dangled from the tree. cookingthemhealthy.com

REBECCA MOORE EMBARKS ON A SPECIAL TRIP TO THE ALGARVE’S PINE CLIFFS RESORT WITH NEPHEW, NIECE AND SISTER IN TOW
A
s we made our way to the airport – “we” being me, my older sister Victoria, my eight-year-old nephew Sam, and six-year-old niece Sophie, and aptly named Holiday Ted – I wondered if I’d been a little ambitious. Going abroad with this energetic bunch was something I hadn’t done since hopping to Disneyland Paris in 2012, where Mickey Mouse and whacky rides held their attention. I was reassured that I’d at least survive the hour-long trip to the airport when, five minutes in, Sam suggested we play “who can stay quiet for the longest”. This, of course, lasted 90 seconds until Sophie shouted ‘yellow car’ – the game we’d started a few minutes prior, which clearly had no staying power. But the thought of stretching out on a sun bed and leaving London for a few days was enough of a pull. After a swift flight to Faro Airport, Portugal, we’d made it. I told Sam and Sophie we needed to look for our driver, and he’d be holding a sign with my name on. We spotted
him, and he packed up our baggage (including the kids). We made our way to award-winning Pine Cliffs Resort, a stone’s throw from Albufeira, learning lots about the history of the Algarve and lingo along the way, with Sophie soon claiming she could speak ‘Portugal’ese’. After navigating through the 72-hectare resort, we reached reception, where we were efficiently checked-in, handed the keys and whizzed off in a golf buggy. We zoomed along to our apartment near the resort’s stunning cliff-side golf course, with the kids giggling the whole way. We were amazed by the size of our apartment: two king-size rooms with swanky ensuites and a large twin room, as well as a sumptuous living space and a well-equipped kitchen. We were delighted that this would be our home for four days. As much as we could 90

It was a treat for us to enjoy a relaxing massage knowing the kids were having fun have happily stayed inside soaking up the lavish surroundings, we were keen to explore. And we’d promised the kids they could swim in the pool before dinner. The main pool area was a three-minute walk from our apartment, nestled among the shop, reception, bar and O’Grill restaurant. I was a little tentative having to share a pool with lots of others families. Not because of privacy, but because I could envisage Sam bombing into the pool and splashing others, and everyone ending up in tears. My reservations were unnecessary. That’s the thing about kids: they all splash. It seems to be a way of making friends, and there is a separate area for really little ones. The genial LITTLELONDONMAGAZINE.CO.UK
pool area, which was mainly used by British families with children from babies to 10 years old, was a little hub for friendship-making, while parents (and aunties) just chilled and watched the kids have fun. All that splashing about really works up an appetite and, most evenings, our foursome could be found at the O’Grill. In fact, we became part of the furniture. It is beautifully situated next to the pool, with parts that overlook the golf course, and offers a Mediterranean buffet in a relaxed atmosphere. We were all super impressed by the vast selection of food. My sister has managed to produce two children with completely different palates; Sophie eats everything 91
and anything, while Sam is particular. Pine Cliffs knows every child is different so there is something for everyone, making mealtimes a pleasure. For kids, there was the usual fish fingers, pizza, pasta and sausages but, for the more adventurous, there’s a host of choices including fresh fish, grilled meat and peri peri chicken. This wealth of choice is available at breakfast, too. The staff are attentive and care about the children. Faces soon became familiar, and our favourite had to be a

So beautifully positioned, this was certainly the kids’ favourite part. It also looked incredible lit up at night
waiter who Sophie named Magic Man. He’d appear behind the children and tuck their chairs in without them noticing, and tap them on the shoulder and hide – a real character! I was keen to give my sister a break, so I booked a treatment at the on-site spa, while Sam and Sophie checked into the Porto Pirata kids’ club. I’d read up on the club beforehand, and was keen to see it in action. The playground is designed for exploring with life-size wooden pirate ships alongside a bouncy castle, basketball court, mini track for ride-on toys, scooters and bikes, a swimming pool for kids and an 18-hole mini-golf course! For children aged from six months to eight years, with daily activities organised by age and run by well-qualified staff, it’s a real asset that lures families back year after year. We made our way to the spa at the resort’s Sheraton Algarve Hotel. It was a treat for us to enjoy a relaxing massage knowing that Sophie and Sam were having fun. Pine Cliffs is renowned for its beautiful private beach, which is easily reached by a shuttle train that picks up just outside the residences’ reception. The kids loved the

journey, and it was a great way to take in the expansive resort. The train stops at the hotel, then it’s a short meander on to the beach. Once you get to the cliff edge, there’s a lift that takes you to beach level. There’s also a little buggy park if you have a very little one and don’t fancy dragging your pushchair in the sand. Fully equipped with sunshades, sun loungers and towels for guests, it’s a truly beautiful beach enveloped by red cliffs with calm water that is perfect for paddling. If you’re yearning for an active holiday, then there’s plenty of scope for that, too, with jet skis, water-skiing and banana rides. But we were content with building sandcastles and splashing in the sea. 92
Pine Cliffs Resort is an amazing getaway for families, and it was a lovely experience to share with the kids and my sister. Four nights was quite long enough for me, but the kids are already asking when we can go back. And with the Ocean Suites opening in July 2016, I may just have to return… L

ENCOURAGING EMPATHY HOW DO CHILDREN LEARN TO BE CONSIDERATE AND CARING TOWARDS OTHERS? KATYA BOBOVA FINDS OUT The expression of empathy is complex and, for young children, it might seem like an insurmountable task. It requires them to know what feelings are and label them, how to assess what others are feeling and act in a way that comforts or supports them. Most mums have the experience of their little one suddenly tuning into another baby’s cry. This is the baby’s first manifestation of empathy – mimicking the feelings of others. When parents try to match their baby’s emotions, they help them overcome frustration, anger and help them calm down. Paediatrician Harvey Karp in his book Happiest Toddler on the Block calls this ‘toddler-ese’. He encourages parents to speak the same words as their toddler, to use the child’s tone of voice and match facial expressions. This way, parents are able to show they feel his emotions. Child psychologists say a child’s ability to read emotions in others and respond in an empathic way follows a developmental sequence. At around two-and-a-half, many toddlers can recognise that someone is in pain and they may offer comfort. At this age, a
toddler lacks the skills to help appropriately but, as he grows, he will learn by observing. Most importantly, however, young children need to feel the love of their parents and caregivers. Loving experiences will create a bank of positive emotions that will help children learn how to interact with others. In several cultures, empathy takes a central place in building one’s character. The Japanese concept of ‘omoiyari’ – the ability and willingness to respond to the needs of others – is perhaps the most important principle for children to learn in pre-school. We should take notice of ‘omoiyari’. Those children who feel loved and are attached positively to their family grow up to be the most perceptive of the needs and feelings of others. L
HOW PARENTS CAN HELP Be a warm parent. Warm parents encourage their children to express emotions, both positive and negative. By being caring and responsive, you will create a strong foundation of trust and security. Take an active role in emotional growth. Become interested in what makes your child sad, distressed, fearful or angry. Children’s age and temperament affect how they respond to distress. Observe your child when he is upset; you will learn that words and actions comfort him.
The best way to encourage empathy in your child is to be a warm and loving parent
Celebrate together. Family celebrations and birthday parties give children a sense of being important and valued by the family. Also encourage your child to help at school or in the community so he sees empathy as part of daily life.

t was my NCT-friend Suzie who first made me think about empathy in young children. Getting ready to go for a walk in the park with our three-month-old sons, I watched her interact with her baby. Little Will was lying in his pram making soft, puff y noises in protest. As she hurried to grab everything necessary for the outing, she continuously chatted to Will, “I know, I know, you are hot and tired, but hang on there two more minutes, and we will be on the road.” I realised she was treating her baby as an equal; she understood and respected his feelings. I wondered if empathy was innate or something parents could teach their children. Empathy is defined as a process where a person senses how others feel and is able to respond in a considerate way. From the Greek for ‘feeling-in’, the word ‘empathy’ was first coined by US psychologist Edward Titchener in 1909. Before he introduced the term, people used the word ‘sympathy’, which, like empathy, means to be considerate and sensitive. However, ‘sympathy’ emphasises compassion for another’s suffering without necessarily knowing what he or she is feeling.

Since the start of the 2015 autumn term. When I first visited, I was struck by the warmth of the school community and the cheerful atmosphere. I knew that I wanted to be part of the school. How would you describe the ethos of your school?
The school aims for all children to be happy and self-assured, love coming to school and thoroughly enjoy learning. This is evidenced every day when the children hurry in. Does the school have a long history and has it maintained its core values?
The school began as Hyde Park School in 1962 when Lady Macpherson set up a day nursery in St George’s Fields, near Marble Arch. Her vision was to provide a happy, peaceful and orderly environment where children, no matter what their background, could flourish in confidence and self-expression. Anyone visiting the school would see that her vision has become a reality. Today, the school is a traditional prep set in the heart of London that caters for the diverse
international community on its doorstep. We celebrate our diversity and value the richness it brings. The pre-prep school buildings stand in a spacious garden near Marble Arch, which has a huge sand pit and play space. The children enjoy being just a short walk away from Hyde Park and they have regular access to the beautiful enclosed lawns of Stanhope Gardens. The behaviour of the children is exceptional and I believe that this is due, in part, to having plenty of fresh air and exercise during the day. How do you help ensure that every student achieves their full potential?
Every child is seen as an individual who needs to be challenged and supported throughout their time with us. Our Year 6 pupils are highly successful in securing entry to their senior schools of choice, including some of the most academic in London. The high ratio of teaching staff to pupils ensures our children receive the attention they need to make rapid progress in all areas of our extensive curriculum. The vast range of after-school activities provide excellent opportunities to learn and develop skills. Music is also strong at the school. Many children play instruments 102
and sing in the choir. Regular trips to local galleries and museums encourage our pupils to appreciate the cultural riches of our city, and our International Week and charity work gives pupils a global perspective. What kind of feedback does the school receive from parents and pupils?
The pupils and parents are overwhelmingly supportive. Parents value the small, family atmosphere, and the pupils comment on the care and attention they receive. Many parents have remarked on the ease with which their children settle in and their swift progress. Where do you see Ravenstone Preparatory School in the future?
The school will continue to build on its strong reputation and ensure its pupils develop into well-rounded, emotionally mature young people who will make a positive contribution to society. In January, the school will revert to its original name, Hyde Park School, in recognition of its heritage and to acknowledge its geographical location. What inspired you to set up Rachel Riley more than 20 years ago?
I started to make things for my own children because I couldn’t find anything for them that I liked. My designs are inspired by the things around me: pink and white clouds in a soft blue sky or red London buses and black taxis on a grey street. I also love vintage prints. You were a model. Why did you decide to create clothes for children?
Being a model allowed me to see how fashion houses worked, but what I love about children’s clothes is that they’re so whimsical. What is your favourite thing about living in the capital?
London is where I was born. I’m proud to have set up a company that has a British feel. London seems to be a very creative place. And do you like to escape the city?
Yes, I love gardening. We have a house in France, where I pick armfuls of peonies, dahlias or roses to make bouquets.
How tough was it juggling your growing business with motherhood?

Very tough. I remember working once the children were in bed. I think it’s good for children to see their parents work, and learn the value of hard work and determination.
How does it feel to be a royal favourite?
If there is one child I could’ve dreamed of dressing it would be the future king. It’s an honour to see my designs on Prince George. What are your proudest moments?
I’m proud of my relationship with my husband and having three lovely children together. I’m also proud of being able to build a business out of something that I love. What’s your advice for women looking to set up a business?
Think carefully about the concept and, once that is decided, just start. It is easy to procrastinate, but once you start you just need to carry on, and most issues can be ironed out. I still say, “We’ll cross that bridge when we come to it.” What’s next for Rachel Riley?
