a ƶN f ⅻ œ v § h Qƶ œ ƶv a b ffiƶ h N a f WE ARE THE CITY LIBRARY. WE WORK TOGETHER TO MAKE LIVES BETTER. We are inclusive.
We have the courage to be our authentic selves. We honor differences of thought, opinion, and world view because we believe that we are stronger together. We believe that diversity in all its forms leads to connections and community that we can only create together. We are open. We cultivate a space for good where we can share differing opinions without judgment. We respect one another and the decisions we make collaboratively, realizing that mistakes, failures, and changes are part of what makes us better.
We are curious.
We are creative explorers who approach all we do with a learning mindset, and we strive for continual improvement in our personal and professional lives. We are always looking for ways to pitch in and make the Library better. We are playful.
We bring a spirit of fun to all that we do. Our collegiality and generosity inspire deeper connections with each other and our community. We see every day as an opportunity to inspire new ideas and make someone smile. We are kind. We care. We treat each other and those we serve with empathy and compassion, lifting each other up, and celebrating our successes together. Together we are The City Library.

10
1.1 LOGO / VARIATIONS The City Library’s mark represents books, growth, and unlimited access to information. It supports
the architectural design of the main library. Horizontal and square versions of logo are acceptable.
Black and white logos are also available, but colored logos should be used predominately.
Preferred Clear Space
12
1.1 LOGO / CLEAR SPACE The “clear space” is a margin surrounding The City Library logo, that separates it from all other
graphic elements. It is based on the cap height of the ‘C’ in “The City Library” in each respective logo.
Double ‘C’ clear space or more is preferred. Just remember: ‘C’ for clear space.
NEVER stretch or morph the logo. It will become illegible, unrecognizable, and unprofessional
Do not separate the logotype from the mark in any way. Keep elements spaced and arranged as they are.
Do not add additional color to any part of the logo or change the color from any acceptable color variation.
Do not place the logo in a graphic shape, without clear space behind and around.
13
/ IMPROPER USE For visibility, impact, and overall integrity, it is important to retain a consistent use of the logo.
Do not alter the appearance in any way. Always reproduce the logo from the original artwork.
Examples of improper logo usage are illustrated above.
14
1.2 ICONOGRAPHY / LINE These twelve icons should be used in all necessary materials consistently. Left column: Cafe / Meeting Room /
Bathroom / Art Gallery Middle column: A/V materials / World Languages / Collection /
Creative Lab / Computers Right column: Holds / Returns / Phone / Information
15
/ FILL The fill versions should be used to represent in use. For example if the icons are used on a directory, the
icons that are shown representing the floor you are ON, they should be the filled version. If you are looking at
icons for a floor you are not on, they should be the line versions.
16
1.3 WAY-FINDING / ARROWS The above arrow is the exact arrow used on the stack ends at main. There is also a 3D print capable file
that can 3D print extra arrows that fall off. The version below it is a minimal arrow used system wide on
stack ends. Always use either one of these arrow versions to retain consistency.

/ DEWEY DECIMAL These icons have primarily been used on shelf flags in children’s and adults across the system to
help way-find genres in the Dewey decimal system. Styrene flags with printed vinyl on the ends have been
the norm. This design is part of the Level 1 signage package, although each branch does not have them yet.

3.7 MACRO & MICRO / SIGNAGE COLORING Macro and Micro refers to the coloring of a sign. MACRO should be used in way-finding signage like
genre signs. It should be a bright full color wash with reverse text, meant to be seen from far away.
MICRO is meant to be read close up and should be light backgrounds with colorful graphics and text.

4.1 ILLUSTRATIONS / LINE Line illustrations should be monoline, meaning every line used is the same width or thickness.
Use blocks of color to add the illustrations, but leave most of the space blank, so the background
shows through. For a crafty look, slightly skew the color block behind the line work.

/ ETCHINGS
These unique illustrations render well as duotones, and are vector based, so they work well in large
format prints. They have the complexity of a photograph with the clarity of a vector illustration.
They are historic, which gives them an air of credibility, but can also be whimsical and fantastic.
48
4.3 TRIOTONES / ETCHINGS Because etchings are have so much clarity, they offer themselves well to triotones. These use three colors
rather than two and offer more depth and detail than a duotone. Always use analogous colors in a triotone.
They look best when zoomed in with enough space to see the nuances of the mid-tone color.

when creating patterns, and add them to the ICX when possible. Use to convey values, and enhance
moods. Stripes, topography, and letter forms are frequently used.
