Reading group will be taking Ignatian journey

Delving into the history of Cranham HISTORIAN John Phillips has written and self-published 'Victorian Cranham and the Boyd School'. The foreword has been written by former Conservative MP and Shadow Cabinet member Ann Widdecombe. John says: "I grew up in Cranham and have discovered that outstanding philanthropic work was carried out in the village by the Boyd family, who were devout Anglicans, throughout the 19th century. "The original school in Cranham was

named after Miss Sarah Boyd in 1870. "The book also covers life in Cranham in Victorian times and provides a summary of the early history of the village and information

about Cranham in the early 20th century." l The book has 32 pages and costs £5 and can be purchased from Swan Books in Upminster at www. swanbooks.co.uk

THE Chelmsford Christian Bookshop reading group will be taking 'Landmarks — An Ignatian Journey' by Margaret Silf at its October 7 meeting. 'Landmarks' is not a book that you only read once. I doubt if you would even read it quickly, but rather spend time in it, taking advantage of each stopping point and examining what you find along the way. Exploring the insights of St Ignatius Loyola may sound rather a dry prospect, but not in the hands of Margaret Silf. The author has used her own experience of

BOOKSHELF

Ignatian spirituality to put together a handbook for people of any religion or

none to accompany them on an inner journey. What is so refreshing is that there is no jargon, but a copious use of imagery and metaphor to guide and explain, plenty of suggestions for prayer and self-questioning and many pictures. The book tackles some major subjects and it is not for passive readers who Silf calls “armchair pilgrims”. If, however, you find you are not content to dabble around on the surface of life, it offers a practical framework for diving in to find a more

profound relationship with God. Please do come and take the plunge with the reading group. 'Landmarks' is available from the bookshop at the special price of £10 (RRP £12.99). The group meets at 1pm on the first Wednesday of each month in the Diocesan Office Library. For details and encouragement please call Rachel or Sally on 01245 294405 or email bookshop@chelmsford. anglican.org.

We do not say: 'My Father, who art in heaven,' nor 'Give me this day my bread,' nor does each one ask that only his debt be forgiven him and that he be led not into temptation and that he be delivered from evil for himself alone. Our prayer is public and common, and when we pray, we pray not for one but for the whole people, because we, the whole people, are one. – Cyprian of Carthage.

CYCLE O LAYER-DE-LA-HAYE: Please pray for the clergy and congregation on October 13 the oldest church building in the UK). The important thing about Bradwell is that it was never a place of pilgrimage but a place from which Christians were sent out (the New Testament word for this is apostello) so the building stands today as a sign of our mission to be people of good news sent out to the communities of this diocese. ● Diocese of Toamasina (Indian Ocean). 25 LAST SUNDAY AFTER TRINITY (BIBLE SUNDAY) ● Give thanks for the work and ministries of our hospices who bring comfort and relief to patients and families in times of physical and spiritual need and stress. Roger Cook, John Turton. ● Braintree St Michael’s School: Mandy Short (HT). ● Diocese of Trichy-Tanjore (South India). 31 Saturday Martin Luther, Reformer,1564 ● Tomorrow is All Saints Day. It was only fixed on November 1 in the 8th century by Pope Gregory III. This was a fantastic piece of opportunism. Europe did not become a majority Christian culture until after 999 AD. Gregory knew that October 31/November 1 was the pagan day of the dead and so he wants to trumped it with All Saints. Christians have a better word to say about life and death than pagans do – a glorious vision where the saints in heaven and earth are one. ● Our Link Diocese of Trinidad and Tobago (West Indies).

God is near to lowliness; he loves the lost, the neglected, the unseemly, the excluded, the weak and broken.” — Dietrich Bonhoeffer ● Diocese of West Buganda (Uganda). 29 THE FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT ● God of comfort, these times seem so uncertain, so scary. The world seems darker than it has in the past and we are less sure of ourselves. Maybe that's a good thing; maybe now we are turning to you with a realization that we need you so much more and that our lives are not in our own control. Let us not forget all of those around the world who are frightened at this moment. Help those who are victims of terrorism and war. Be with those who have lost so much in the past year.
