Let’s face it, being green means lower energy bills, too.*

For many homebuyers today, having a “green” home isn’t just about being environmentally responsible. They want a home that’s as energy efficient as possible to save money. The easiest and least costly way to having a green home is by using natural gas for water heating, heating and cooking.

SAVE MONEY WITH NATURAL GAS.

That’s because natural gas appliances are energy efficient, cost-effective to operate, last longer and require less maintenance. And, natural gas is one of the most environmentally friendly energy sources available. Plus, no other energy source delivers the comfort, convenience and reliability of natural gas. Call 1-866-523-8242 or visit sceg.com/value to see just how easy being “green” can be.

LOOK FOR HOMES BUILT BY BUILDERS WHO KNOW THE ADVANTAGES OF NATURAL GAS. * When asked to list their top 12 influences in buying a home, consumers responding to a National Association of Home Builders survey last year put energy efficiency at No. 2 , behind quality of living space. Five years ago, energy efficiency did not make the same survey.

Living near the salty ocean can wreak havoc to the very materials used to construct our homes. We’ve listed several tried and true products made to protect against the threats of coastal living like rust, water damage, and hurricanes.

Truly suave and debonair, Tommy Baker stands regally in his wife’s favorite room of the house—her orange and white sitting room—featuring a sea-inspired octopus painting and arched doorways. Sitting on the porch overlooking not only a beautiful pool, but also a stately dock jutting into the neighboring inlet, the Charleston Home + Design team enjoyed chatting with Tommy and his sweet-natured publicist, Pam Hartley, about business, building homes, and boating to the Bahamas.

EDITOR'S NOTE

B

A new perspective

eing my first full issue as editor of CH+D magazine, it is a special one. It represents my initial exploration into this beautiful city. As a transplant, every locale the team covered and every shop we discovered was new, which inspired me to imagine the possibilities for my own recently purchased home. In this issue, I believe we’ve translated the energy and vibrancy that comes with learning the ins and outs of a new city and planning the projects of a new home. So, even if you’re a life long Charlestonian, in the following pages, you might get a new perspective. We have a few features within that are particularly fresh. Our Alfresco Lookbook will get you to see potential in a drab backyard. With over 100 local outdoor companies displaying products from patio furniture all the way down to pavers, we’ve left no stone unturned. The Lowcountry Luxury Shopping Guide is another feature that is sure to impress. For the few that can afford—and the many that have a shopping bucket list—we’ve compiled an amazing selection of the area’s most exotic, high-end products of which even the Joneses would be jealous.

Since everything comprising a home expresses who we are and what we’d like to be, the home is personal. Thanks for letting us in.

Christy Conway, Editor

And, certainly no luxury issue would be complete without an in-depth cover story on the legendary automobile mogul Tommy Baker. (It’s our belief that his Sullivan's Island home has more marble than any other in the area!)

P.S.–For a daily dose of CH+D’s advice, follow the (RED)itors on twitter @CHDmag. Also, check out our ideabooks on Houzz, a site and app for home improvement aspirants.

The ABCs of Hurricane Home Preparedness

A

nother successful Family Circle Cup has come and gone. It seems only fitting that Serena took home her 40 career single title at the 40 edition of the Family Circle tournament. Being such a momentous occasion, the Charleston Home + Design magazine team was excited to take part. For the third year in a row, we helped match furniture companies with local interior designers to create six courtside Ace Sponsor Suites, each of which were inspired by a participating tennis powerhouse. One design, in fact, happened to be based on Serena Williams! Read on to view the finished rooms and get the inside scoop on the design process.

With summertime in full swing, why not take a moment to spruce up your patios, pools, and porches? Peruse the next few pages to see the best ways to turn a plain ole backyard into an outdoor paradise.

N

ot since Hurricane Hugo has the Charleston area suffered a direct hit from a high category storm. It doesn’t take a category four, however, to threaten your home and your family. Even tropical storms can produce damaging winds and flooding. Strong winds create a vacuum in your home when windows, doors, or garages are blown away. This air pressure can cause roof collapse and water damage—ruining all the beautiful finishes in your home. Obviously, these three access points are the main areas of vulnerability. So, we’ve included products and tips to help prevent such an exposure. And, since family comes before possessions, we’ve also included suggestions on how to protect your loved ones, all of which are as easy as ABC: anchor, brace, and cover.

hen Hedi Moran—a celebrated floral still-life painter—was introduced to Paula Lonneman of Charleston’s Indigo Fine Art Gallery, she was described as a “hot-house flower.”

“A lot of people think of floral paintings as being sweet or cute. I hate those words,” Hedi described. “Sunflowers are in your face. I just love their shapes, and to me, they’re strong.”

Photography by Patrick Brickman

“Isn’t she a gem?” asked Paula at the Joy of Flowers oil painting workshop taught by Hedi March 19-23 in Charleston’s St. Mary’s Church. Hedi is a gem. Patiently, she demonstrated her wet-on-wet painting technique (commonly used by outdoor and plein air painters) to the class. Then, she performed one-on-one coaching.

Travelling artist Hedi Moran and Paula Lonneman of Indigo Fine Art Gallery join forces to present the first ever Joy of Flowers oil painting workshop in Charleston.

To see our full interview with Hedi and Paula, scan the QR code to the right.

It seems as if Hedi is more of a sunflower than a hot-house flower. Hedi, born Ase Pedersen, immigrated to the United States from a small Norwegian coastal village, picking up painting in the early '70s. She still visits her homeland, teaching her spontaneous, impressionist style in her native tongue of Norwegian! Thanks to Paula at Indigo Fine Art Gallery, Hedi recently added Charleston to her string of workshops.

“Hedi is the finest still life floral artist that I have had the privilege to know,” Paula exclaimed. This is probably the reason why Indigo Fine Art gallery represents Hedi’s work. They represent the best, including the works of 13 other artists (three of which are the owners).

Also, being a trio, they are able to provide extra services—like the Hedi Moran workshop—to Charlestonians. Paula urges those interested, “Come in and have a glass of wine with us. We have a beautiful little garden and exquisite artwork.”

Paula—a still life oil painter herself—describes the other partners’ fortes, “Helen Beacham is a water colorist. She has a beautiful technique

MEET+GREET

A Brush with Genius Charleston’s very own artist Regina Bowling brings a unique style and passion to the local art scene. Don’t be surprised if you happen to stumble upon one of her paintings, for her studio-based work graces many beautiful Charlestonian homes, galleries, offices, and public spaces.

complexity that I don't get using other mediums. When I first open up my paint boxes, the smell of the oil immediately gets me excited to start something new.

Art is notoriously known for being a risky business to get into; an artist never knows how the rest of the world will perceive his or her beloved work. When and why did you decide to pursue this career? In my lifetime, I don't ever remember seeing a blank wall or scrap of paper and not thinking, “Hmm...inviting.” Ever since I was a young child, landscapes, shapes, textures, and colors have taken my breath away. So, I try to put them on paper or canvas to keep the image with me always. Art is a risky business, and you have to be willing to accept that not everyone is going to be in love with your work. You have to develop the ability to grow from those moments. There are paintings that I've done that I'm not in love with; others just rave about them, and I don't see it. Then, there are paintings that I have a hard time letting go of because

You produce commissioned pieces—where you work with a client to create a work of art uniquely suited for that specific person. How exactly do you go about incorporating the client into your creative work?

I really felt them deeply, and they are going away forever to live somewhere else. What influenced you to use oil paint as your prime medium? Oil just has a wonderful feel to work with on the brush and, for me, lately on wood. It has the ability to reflect light and layer, creating

I like to listen to them talk about what is important, what their expectations are, and what the art is going to be used for in their life. I look at the colors and textures they already have surrounding them, and they give me a good idea of their tastes and what would fit. From listening to them, I also can tell if they are receptive to stepping outside their comfort zone and trying new things or styles. What do you want your customers to get out of owning one of your paintings? I like for a painting to be the finishing touch to an area—to make it feel complete. I want them to be proud of it in their home or office. And, during a hurricane evacuation, I want them to take the painting [laughs]. Concrete Art When designing a dream bathroom, concrete fixtures don’t traditionally come to mind. However, concrete—with its charming unpredictability—allows each sink to be unique in color, shape, and detail. Zeph Smith, owner of Eco Designer Concrete compares the process of creating a concrete sink to opening a gift, saying, “I get excited each time I begin to

remove the mould. You have somewhat of an idea of what it is, but there is still a slight element of surprise.” Concrete sinks are not only beautiful and unique, but Zeph says that up to 80 percent of the sinks he creates are also made with recycled material, most of which is purchased at local hardware and craft stores. Unlike mass production shops, he uses very little electricity in fabricating each work of art. Once the concrete is mixed, he does everything else by hand, including the final polishing. Customers are able to implement their own design ideas, so the final product is something they play a role in creating. “I really believe concrete fabrication is an art form, there-

Bright Ideas Seven Tips for Cutting High Energy Costs

1

Set your thermostat at 68ºF or lower in the winter and 78ºF or higher in the summer. Each degree higher or lower can significantly increase your heating and cooling costs. For heat pumps, make sure the thermostat has ramp-up technology.

2 3

Unplug appliances, lights, TVs, computers, and other electronic devices when not in use.

4 5

Set your water heater to 120ºF and periodically visually inspect the unit for leaks.

44

Replace your standard incandescent light bulbs with Energy Star® compact fluorescent bulbs (CFLs), which use up to 75 percent less energy.

Check air filters monthly, and change them when they become dirty. Leave interior doors and all vents open to

ASK THE EXPERTS Excerpts from our radio show TALKING ABOUT A HOME

Lorelie Brown Showhomes Home Staging

“Most homeowners need to understand that their homes should be clean and dry during the hot and humid months. In particular, homeowners with vacant homes need to be very concerned about moisture and mildew. Agents show up to the property and may only open the doors of the house once or twice a week. But, with Showhomes, a homeowner may choose to bring us in to completely stage the property—we even maintain that home and keep an eye on things all the time. Choosing us for a vacant property is certainly a good solution in the hot and humid months.” For more information, call Showhomes Home Staging at (843) 606-2811 or visit showhomescharleston.com

We asked five experts in their field: “What kind of maintenance can homeowners do on their home in the summer months to keep it in tip-top shape?”

Jon Rosa

Rhino Shield “Make sure your home is caulked properly, especially around your windows and doors. Utility bills are always higher in the summer than in the winter months. If you apply Rhino Shield to your house (we use a ceramic technology), your home will reflect 70 to 80 percent of radiant heat coming from the sun. Rhino Shield is like the difference in being on the beach with sunscreen, and without it. So, you definitely get some benefits with Rhino Shield in the summer months. When you’re reflecting that radiant heat, the home isn’t taking that pounding from the sun everyday.” For more information, call Rhino Shield (843) 884-1992 or visit rhinoshieldsc.com.

Rebecca Geary

Charleston Designer Showroom “As summer approaches, heat and humidity come with it. If you have rugs down in the wintertime on wood floors, it’s important to remove those in the summer. Or, you can keep two sets of rugs for a given area: a nice wool rug for the winter and something much lighter in weight (and color) for the summer. Also, with as much sun as we have here, many people are looking for window treatments that will provide shade. To achieve this, try perforated screen shades—called sun shades or sun screens— which block ultraviolet rays and heat. You can still see through the shades, keeping your view intact.” For more information, call Charleston Designer Showroom at (843) 577-7776 or visit awardfabrics.com.

Jim Clark

ESS: Environmental Solutions and Service and Myers Heating and Air “Homeowners just need to be cognizant of their air conditioning system and how it runs. Both consumer reports and the Department of Energy came out with studies that said over 60 to70 percent of air conditioning systems in America are oversized, which can cause short-cycling, as well as moisture and humidity problems. Homeowners should pay attention to how long their air conditioner runs when it comes on. It needs to run at least 20 minutes to start the dehumidification process before it shuts off. If it doesn’t, moisture problems will develop affecting indoor air quality.”

Kathy McKay

McKay Insurance “Hot weather means hurricane weather. Pull your policy out and look at it now. There are things within that policy you need to know, and it’s best to be prepared before any disaster happens. If you’re in a flood zone, check to make sure that you have flood insurance. Take note of the items in your home. It doesn’t hurt to walk around your house with a video camera and video various rooms because, if something were to happen, you’re not going to instantaneously remember everything that you own. That video will remind you of what was stored in each room.” For more information, call McKay Insurance (843) 881-2229 or visit restinsuredcharleston.com

HOT PRODUCTS TRENDS

SIDING

Siding Tip:

Primed Elite Treated Trimboard Providing a clean, crisp look, this all-natural, treated Southern Yellow Pine siding is a great alternative to man-made siding. This particular pine is indigenous to the area, which means the product creates no carbon dioxide emissions caused by long distance shipping. And, the appearance is flawless—no knots in these boards! After being primed with a high quality, oilbased exterior primer, fully encapsulating the product on all six sides, this siding is sure to resist deterioration from UV rays and moisture.

If you want the paint or stain on your siding to look and last longer, do what local architects and custom builders do, have the siding pre-primed and coated by Carolina Machine Finishing before ever installing it on your home. The siding (all types including fiber cement) is delivered to CMF’s North Charleston location where every board is “flood-coated” with your choice of paint or stain. The encapsulation process covers all six sides of the board in a controlled factory setting, rather than in the field. The result is a superior paint job. CMF also paints and stains all sorts of other materials like decking, trim boards, and even wood flooring for the interior of the home. For more information, contact Carolina Machine Finishing at (843) 760-0029 or visit cmfprefinish.com.

For more information, contact supplier Southern Lumber at (843) 744-6281 or visit southernlumbermillwork.com.

NichiStaggered Shingles These textured cedar shake panels have the authentic look of individual shakes. Four feet in length, the NichiStaggered panels offer a quicker installation than traditional shingles (easier cutting and nailability). Comprised of 50 percent fly ash, a material made from coal burning and electric generating facilities, this fiber cement siding has a high concentration of recycled content. What does this mean for a homeowner? NichiStaggered cladding will withstand the extreme weather conditions commonly found in the Lowcountry. For more information, contact supplier Buck Lumber at (843) 795-0150 or visit bucklumber.com.

56

CH+D • Summer 2012

Hardie Artisan Lap Clapboard

NuCedar Board and Batten

Thicker than typical cement siding, Artisan Lap casts deep, luxurious shadow lines across a home’s exterior, a stark difference from the flat lines so often seen in dimensionless, modern homes. Manufactured with a tongue and groove design, this siding (shown in a smooth finish) has superior stability and low profile seams, a benefit to homeowners looking for a sleek exterior. And, if that is not enough, Artisan Lap—made of fiber cement—is one of the most fire-resistant siding products on the market.

Matching the beauty of authentic cedar siding, NuCedar cladding is milled from cellular PVC, which is comprised of at least 20 percent recycled material. Natural cedar is vulnerable to rot and infestation; however, NuCedar is impervious to such threats. Available in six different forms (shown in board and batten), 1,400 custom colors, and three different textures, there’s no reason not to have a traditional look with modern protection. And, NuCedar won’t chip, peel, or crack!

For more information, contact supplier 84 Lumber at (843) 884-8431 or visit 84lumber.com.

For more information, contact Liberty Cedar at (843) 744-0450 or visit libertycedar.com.

HOMEWORK

Story by Emily White • Photography by Matt Bolt

At Home Andy & Donna Nettles with

of Creative Counter Tops

I

come from a construction background. Growing up, my father was a contractor, and I worked with his friend who was a cabinet builder. I just had that in my blood,” notes Andy Nettles of Creative Counter Tops. At the ripe age of 19, Andy became involved with DuPont Corian (a solid surface countertop material) and started his own business. Twenty-seven years later, Creative Counter Tops now has over 60 employees and is a natural stone, solid surface, and quartz fabricator and installer. Although Creative Counter Tops uses materials from many different manufacturers, all of the stone in the Nettles’ home was provided locally by World Stone Distributors.

The Nettles’ kitchen granite is called "Silver Sparkle." This particular stone has a lot of movement and variation, with veins that flow up the wall and over the upper server, giving the illusion that it is one large piece. Truly a piece of artwork, this granite makes a statement with its bold simplicity.

58

CH+D • Summer 2012

A unique play on textures and material, the look created in this bathroom happened out of pure luck. Donna said that after installing the tile in the shower, she thought, “We’ve got all of this granite to choose from and nothing matches!” As fate would have it, they came across a remnant of Avonite, a polyester solid, that matches the seafoam tile. She said, “I get so many compliments on it; it’s really just a cool little piece that we threw a light under.”

Made from a remnant of Calcutta Fantastico, this desk creates the perfect nook for son EJ’s homework station. A one-of-a-kind material, Calcutta Fantastico is extracted from a quarry owned by the local business World Stone Distributors. Andy used the Fantastico for a client’s laminated table and repurposed the remnant in his own home. In difficult economic times, projects that utilize stone remnants allow even the most pennypinching homeowner to enjoy luxurious materials. Donna exclaimed, “We’re lucky that Andy is crafty!” Creative Counter Tops serves most of South Carolina. To view all of the products and designs Creative Counter Tops offers, visit their website at creativecountertops-sc.com or call (843) 881-8315.

YOUR MONEY’S WORTH

taking a look at the cost of custom built-ins and woodwork

I

t’s easy to run out to Target for a bookshelf or to Lowe’s to pick up trim for a project around the house. But, what if you want something unique for your home—something that no other house on the block has? Opting for custom woodwork and furniture in your home can cost a pretty penny, though. How do you know it’s worth the extra cost?

Randon Riegsecker, Owner of Cross Cut Services

A Perfect Fit: The price of custom

Story by Megan Busch • Photography by Patrick Brickman

built-ins, mantles, and wainscoting is higher than big-box products because they are custom crafted by hand—not in a factory. This homemade touch allows the homeowners’ imaginative design to become a reality. Of his custom woodworking, Randon Riegsecker of local woodworking company Crosscut Services, LLC notes, “Handcrafted and made in the USA, each custom piece is unique—no two are alike.” He further mentions that these days, he’s been building many pieces for

home offices and entertainment spaces— for the special areas that standard stores just can’t accommodate. Custom construction offers pieces to fit any nook and cranny in the home.

Local Lumber: Boosting the local

economy is a huge trend in Charleston, spearheaded by foundations like Lowcountry Local First. Local woodworking companies (Crosscut Services, in particular) like to keep their trade as local as possible. Randon explains, “We use many different types of woods—from maple and poplar to cherry and walnut—but all of our wood selections are carefully selected from local hardwood distributors, such as Wurth Wood Group. Much of our lumber and lineal trim comes from Southern Lumber and Millwork or Buck Lumber,

both of which have a reputation for providing high quality products.”

Exactly What You Want: Cus-

tom woodworking companies specialize in listening to homeowners and builders to construct exactly what their customers want. They know how to stay within budget and on schedule. Furthermore, new, high-technology programs allow them to create full-color sketchs of your custom furniture. So, when you sign on the dotted line, you know exactly how your finished product will look with no surprising disappointments. For more information about custom woodworking, call Randon with Crosscut Services, LLC at (843) 608-8142 or visit crosscutservices.com.

Now, however, original tin tiles (in a multitude of colors) are being used as accessories, wall decor, and art groupings.

19 th Century Walnut Bed? from

T

his walnut, double size bed is chock-full of history. Originally a four poster bed, it provided shelter from mosquitoes and other disease carrying creatures with netting that hung from the teester, the upper rectangular panel. At that time, it was very unusual to build a bed this large; most beds were singles. With a handmade mattress stuffed with Spanish Moss, this bedroom piece was certainly luxurious. These features, combined with a unique round, dimpled emblem on the headboard, were probably why this piece was included in a young woman’s dowry in the 1850s. A

former Navy engineer, Jeffrey Donaldson of Ace Preferred Inspections, Inc. is nothing if not detail oriented. After 15 years in the business, he is uniquely qualified to perform home inspections. So, we tagged along for a complete inspection to see what we could learn from this “Pro on the Go.”

Jeffrey Donaldson of Ace Preferred Inspections

1:00PM:

The CH+D team meets Jeffrey and his employee Scott Burns at Gift Plantation on Johns Island. Jeffrey walks around the property to acclimate himself with the size, scope, and components of the job at hand. Immediately, Jeffrey notices a ruptured pipe on the dock on the Stono River that, when turned on, floods the land at the base of the dock.

1:35PM: Jeffrey notes the thorough construction of the deck and photographs the house from all four sides. Since the job of inspecting inherently focuses on the negative, Jeffrey likes to take a few extra positive pictures to highlight some of the nice details of the house.

Taking “rights” at every turn to prevent missing a detail, Jeffrey examines every single outlet with his voltage tester. Upon finding a subpanel, Jeffrey looks for evidence of overheating (wire insulation blistering), which implies that the circuit breakers are not tripping.

left and cold is on the right. If they are mixed, somebody could inadvertently scald themselves.

3:30PM:

While walking through the four bedrooms upstairs, Jeffrey explains that inspectors look for stains, smells, cracks, and anything that might indicate a problem or potential problem.

2:55PM: In the master bathroom, Scott turns on all the faucets and lets them run. This gives him the opportunity to confirm that the hot and cold faucets are in the correct position. Universally, hot is on the

4:25PM: Jeffrey notes the unusual access point to the attic, grabs his ladder, and begins the more complex portion of the inspection. Being a newly constructed million dollar home, one might make assumptions as to the quality and functionality. Jeffrey explains, however, that the process is the same for any home. And, he’s been surprised before. 5:00PM:

Once the two men have thoroughly completed their floors, they meet underneath the home. They always do the crawl space last so that they will see any leaks and drips resulting from running the faucets on the upper stories. This house is elevated, so no army crawling in the dirt is required this time.

5:45PM: They brief the realtor. Then, they enter their notes and photographs into a digital file that is sent to the client via email.

1:45PM: The inspectors at Ace Preferred

take a systematic approach to each inspection. The men split the floors; Scott takes the lower level. The kitchen comes first, always. Before verifying that the appliances work, Scott documents the model and serial numbers so that he can compile what they call, a “Recall Chek,” which checks for

CRAFTED IN

CHARLES ON The Craftsmen: Fisher Recycling

The Backstory:

Founded twenty years ago by Chris Fisher—a former restaurant server, ski patroller, and Market Street t-shirt vendor—Fisher Recycling started with one pickup truck, one local restaurant, and one great idea. Chris saw local businesses’ need for dependable recycling collection . In his dented, blue pickup, Chris drove between 30 different restaurants daily to collect and dispose of their recyclable waste. A few years ago, Chris and his wife, Elizabeth, opened the Fisher Recycling Center, located on the revived and renovated Navy Yard. Since 1992, Fisher has recycled over 6.2 million pounds of aluminum, glass, plastic, and tin and 18 million pounds of office paper, newspaper, magazines, and cardboard.

The Craft:

What can’t be made out of recyclable material? Patagonia makes winter coats from plastic bottles. The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources maintains estuaries with discarded oyster shells. And, Fisher Recycling makes GlassÉCO countertops (as well as collects the aforementioned plastic and shells).

The Process:

All Fisher Recycling GlassÉCO countertops are fully customizable. For example, if a homeowner with an affinity for Bombay Sapphire gin bottles envisions a bright blue, eco-friendly countertop for his or her beach house kitchen island, Chris would collect those specific bottles over a period of time from local bars and restaurants. Then, he would crush those bottles to the exact size that is requested. If the homeowner wants other materials in the mix, Chris can include them as well. One client, in fact, added boulders from the World Trade Center, antique barn nails, and pieces of musket balls from the Civil War. Creativity of that kind is not required, however. Once all the ingredients are collected, crushed, and tumbled, Chris mixes them with a white or color-tinted base, depending on the homeowner’s wishes. This makes a rough slab. The slab is then polished and sent to an installer to be cut to exact specifications. The finished product is made from approximately 94 percent recycled content and is 100 percent appealing. For more information, call Fisher Recycling at (843) 554-6099 or visit fisherrecycling.com Chris Fisher of Fisher Recycling

(top right) After Chris Fisher displayed his finished GlassÉCO countertop, he showed us the dirty process he takes to make his beautifully clean (and green!) countertops. (left to right) Outside his warehouse, Chris houses piles of glass separated by color. Upon grinding the glass with a custom fabricated machine, Chris polishes the edges. Then, he mixes this glass with a white or colored base and pours the drying mixture in a mold in the shape and size the homeowner desires.

BUILDING BLOCKS

What is the most rewarding aspect of being a builder in Charleston?

Are there any new developments on the horizon for Max G. Crosby Construction?

So many of my clients refer to their new home as their "forever home,” and I am really honored to be a part of that process. It’s very satisfying to sit across the table from my clients at the end of the project—with everyone smiling—and know that their expectations were met through the perseverance of our entire building team.

We have always been a small custom building company and will continue to grasp tightly to our roots. I feel that being small is a virtue that allows us to provide outstanding and consistent service to all of our custom clients.

Do you have a favorite project that you’ve built in the area?

Jamison Howard of Max G. Crosby Construction

Photography by Matt Bolt & Michael Costa

In 2000, Jamison Howard and his team at Max G. Crosby Construction developed a plan to help homeowners glide smoothly through the home building process, providing start-to-finish services including architectural design, construction, and interior decorating. Jamison’s inspiration came from his father, an architect; through him, Jamison gained a passion for building and architecture at an early age. In time, he met Max Crosby— the company’s namesake—who acted as a mentor to Jamison, teaching him the ins and outs of the custom homebuilding business. Charleston Home + Design took a moment to sit down with Jamison and talk about his experiences in the business.

I always say that my most recent project is my favorite. We have built some incredible homes over the years, and each is unique to its owner.

What’s your best advice for homeowners looking to build? There are many reputable building companies in the Charleston area who all have different strengths and services. Market presence, reputation, affiliations, and a company history will always help to narrow the list when

you’re trying to choose a builder. You want someone with a steady, guiding hand to lead you through this process and someone who has consistently proven his or her abilities. Most importantly, you must select the builder who you feel is the best match for you, someone who you trust to watch out for your best interest through the entire project, properly managing and meeting your expectations.

ARCHITECTS + ARCHETYPES

David Hill and his wife Amy of The Verdi Company

When did your interest in architecture first begin? Thinking back, I remember drawing these fantasticated houses for our family when I was a little boy, always with separate wings that expressed what niche each family member was into at the time (my room was always sort of an observatory at the end of a pier.) But, it wasn’t until I went to Engineering Day at Clemson with my dad as a high school senior that the architectural epiphany really hit me. I realized I had neither the aptitude nor interest to be the next great engineer. So, I was very lucky (a) to get into architectural school, (b) to like it, and (c) to have it like me back.

You specialize in eco-friendly building and design—what does this mean for your homeowners? As an architect, planner, and interior designer, I feel like I bring a particular sensitivity to both my clients’ design needs and to all the various opportunities for a greener project solution—one that will give their home much better efficiency, durability, and in-

With a Bachelor of Science in Design and a Master of Architecture from Clemson, a diploma in Interior Planning from the Art Institute in Houston, coursework in Design and Construction Management courtesy of the U.S. Air Force, and hundreds of hours of continuing education credit, it’s no wonder that David Hill has made a huge impact in Charleston’s architectural community.

door air quality. As a builder, I can take all of these great ideas and make them work within a budget, while also leveraging the higher cost of better insulation and windows, for example, against the lower resulting cost of their heating and air conditioning system.

Do you have any new projects on the horizon? We have a couple of homes in Oak Terrace Preserve (a sustainable, neo-traditional neighborhood in North Charleston’s Park Circle) and some larger custom homes in

the area on the docket for this year. One home in particular near Kiawah was originally conceived as a zero-energy house, and although we may not get all the way to zero, it will nevertheless be a very resource-efficient home. We also have a couple of new, larger projects right now, including a green condo complex constructed of shipping containers and structural insulated panels.

What is your favorite aspect of being an architect in Charleston, a city overflowing with architectural inspiration? Charleston is still full of architectural surprises for me after all these years. There’s always some street I haven’t been down before or some subtle historic architectural detail that I may have overlooked. And, there’s always something new going on—sometimes it’s in the form of a new architectural work, but it’s often expressed in the creative re-use (and preservation) of the great, old buildings downtown.

DESIGN DILEMMA

The Dilemma:

Melissa had four weeks to complete the Folly Beach project, and the homeowners were only in town for two of those weeks. She found that, although the house had great bones, it had not been updated in many years and would require many cosmetic renovations.

Melissa Hunter of MW Hunter Custom Interiors

Storry by Emily White • Photography by Patrick Brickman

For a veteran interior designer like Melissa Hunter, who has been in the industry for almost 30 years, remodeling a Folly Beach rental home seems like an ordinary task. However, when it came to one of her recent projects, Melissa realized just how difficult a time-sensitive remodel could be, especially when the homeowner doesn’t live in the Charleston area.

replacing appliances, and installing new lighting. Personal touches and accents were added, and in the entry way, Melissa placed a small table with a mirror above.

She describes, “Since it is a beach rental, the shells on the knobs of the desk and on the mirror were a great way to welcome new guests as they signed in.” Melissa designed appealing, innovative rooms that could withstand a multitude of visitors each season. In the bathroom, she replaced the old wallpaper with heavyduty vinyl wallpaper that would hold up to the constant use that a rental bathroom inevitably receives. The living area also needed to be transformed into a visitorfriendly, highly functional space. “I needed to create a living space that would not only be used for entertainment, but also for extra sleeping and eating,” explains Melissa. “We purchased a sleeper sofa and love seat. Then, I arranged the sofa at an angle that allowed me to put a drop leaf table behind it for extra lighting and accessories. Or, the guests can pull the table away and open it up for additional dining.”

The Requests:

The homeowners wanted to keep some of the original furniture and needed the home to be rental-ready in a mere month. They also wanted to make sure that the beach house would be visitor friendly and able to withstand the wear and tear that comes with such a highly trafficked home.

The Plan:

Melissa completed many cosmetic updates, including scraping the popcorn textured kitchen ceiling, painting,

The Result:

The homeowners plan to completely transform their home in stages. With the first phase completed, Melissa says, “The homeowner is delighted, and the house stays booked year round.” She’s looking forward to her continued work with the homeowners.

t was a long time coming, but homeowner Karen Keating finally got her dream home on Daniel Island. A custom design from top to bottom, each and every detail was examined, mulled over, and executed with enthusiasm. Two aspects of the home that were particularly important to Karen were the flooring and the countertops. For that coveted installer spot, she chose MVP Granite and

Flooring because her husband Walter G. Keating, Vice President of Club Operation for the Daniel Island Club, had such a positive experience working with them on a recent clubhouse remodel. The fact that MVP receives a lot of their business through word of mouth is no surprise. For one, they don’t have a website. Established in 2009, MVP is a no frills, streamlined operation, which makes for efficient work at a good price. But, more importantly, they produce a beautiful finished product, and they take care of their clients. For each and every job, Nick Mathias, the general manager at MVP, stays in constant contact with the homeowner. In fact, for Karen, Nick said, “I personally laid out the tile for her master bathroom. I spent at least two weeks in this house—myself—making sure to lay out the master bath floor and the kitchen backsplash perfectly.”

It’s on that foundation of customer care that Nick has built his business. With Nick’s help, Karen was able to turn her concept into a reality. As a laywoman in the flooring and countertop world, at the beginning of her project, Karen could not describe the pattern of Negro Marquena—the stone she ended up using in her master bath. But by the end, she could not only do that, but also tell the difference between the various edges that MVP offers. “We went step by step with Karen through the design process as she was picking stuff out,” Nick said. For the less dramatic, smaller countertops—such as the children’s bathrooms—Nick was able to utilize granite remnants from other projects. “She got to choose a piece that they just cut from another job,” Nick explained. “We offer that at a lower price, which makes the homeowner happy, and we

get to get rid of some inventory.” Karen added, “When it came to the kids’ [bathrooms], I wanted them to be nice. MVP made it so that I could still do granite instead of going to a lesser quality product. They were very helpful in helping me achieve the look I wanted.” That type of inventory, product knowledge, and customer service makes MVP Granite and Flooring uniquely equipped to handle custom homes such as the Keating's. v For more information, contact Nick Mathias at (843) 518-8998.

(counterclockwise) Not only did the homeowner choose MVP for the kitchen and master bathroom, she used his expertise in small projects such as this wet bar. Simplicity in color and layout was key to this master bathroom. With the help of MVP, the homeowner’s goal to match the island granite to the fireplace was easily achieved!

riving by some of the beautiful homes on Daniel Island always evokes a bit of curiosity in the minds of passersby. What does the kitchen in that home look like? Or, I wonder how they’ve chosen to design their living room? Answers to questions like these lead to inspiration and ideas to be mimicked in new homes and remodeling projects across the Lowcountry. The homeowners of this Rhoden Island Drive home, which was featured on the 2012 Homes by Architects Tour presented by CH+D magazine, allowed our cameras inside to bring you a whole-house photographic lookbook of their architecturally designed and impeccably decorated dwelling. Perhaps the most interesting bedroom in the home is the nautical-themed grandchildren’s room, affectionately known as the “Bunk Room.” Phillip describes, “Bunk rooms have become increasingly popular. a tale of two homes Brightly colored adirondack lounging chairs, weather resistant artwork, and playful outdoor pillows create a space worthy of the greatest parties on the block. These two rental houses, both located on Isle of Palms, demonstrate the luxury of having the appropriate furniture for poolsides, decks, and porches.

S

porting two unique styles—one colorfully festive and one naturally classy— these two Isle of Palms homes have been artfully decorated with unique, weather resistant outdoor décor. To begin the decorating process, the owner of both homes, Chuck Goldfarb, commissioned the team at Backyard Retreats, a quaint shop marked by a row of delightfully colorful adirondacks off of Johnnie Dodds Boulevard in Mt. Pleasant. Sharon Campbell, owner of Backyard Retreats, met with Chuck at the two properties to discuss the needs of the outdoor spaces. Sharon explains, “If a homeowner needs a specific piece, we will design it for them. We will come to their home, we will bring all the fabric samples, we will bring all the colors, and we will work with them right at their home.” In Chuck’s case, he needed something new and charming to punctuate his properties. Sharon and Chuck started with the larger home, where they wanted to create a beachy feel. Chuck notes, “I was looking for something to really pop for the patio. Sharon said, ‘You need colors!’” She opted

num pool furniture with woven fabric slings to complement the stately exterior. When homeowners think of decorating the outdoors, the concern of weathering and deterioration is always at the forefront of their minds. However, wellmade outdoor furniture and accessories can last for many years. Sharon explains, “Polymer furniture, which is held together with stainless steel screws, is made for seaside environments, and it cleans up great. Furthermore, the color isn’t just on the top surface; the pieces are colored all the way through. This prevents fading and sun bleaching.” Chuck reiterates, “In ten years, the furniture will be the same.” Between these two homes, Sharon has incorporated over 100 different pieces of furniture and outdoor décor that will stand the test of time, providing vacationers with a fun place to call home during their stay on Charleston’s coast.v

had a neutral color palette and a very specific taste.” Jeri, a Nebraska husker via Washington DC, wanted a contemporary feel throughout the house. Jill helped her stay within that style by special ordering thin, two inch wide, linen style porcelain tile for the master bathroom. “The curved wall in the master bathroom was very challenging in design with what exact material would be best,” Jeri explained. “Porcelain tile was thin enough to go around the curved wall.” Jill and Jeri’s partnership started with the master bathroom

ea Island homeowner Jeri Finke had a vision in mind for her uniquely curved master bathroom, and it did not include a glass block wall—the architect’s original suggestion. So, Jeri took her blueprints to Melcer Tile to come up with an alternative plan. What she found there was a 7,000 square foot showroom and Jill Mahoney, Showroom Manager and designer extraordinaire.

“In one of the guest bathrooms, I think we did a great design using our in-stock material along with a rock border, doing a vertical design versus doing something horizontal, and making it a little bit more modern according to the homeowner’s taste,” Jill described. Working for Melcer Tile for over six years, Jill has developed the knowledge of when to design a jaw dropping layout and where in the house to save a bit of money. Primarily working from the Melcer Tile office, however, Jill rarely gets to see the finished product in person. Upon arriving at Jeri’s house, Jill stated, “I’ve got to say, it’s breathtaking. called on the expertise of architect Carl McCants with MC3 Design, building company Brown Mehaus Construction, and local pool company Blue Haven Pools and Spas. The trio created a space that merges the beautiful, natural vistas with the comforts of pristine outdoor living. The focal point of the backyard is the pool—an elevated, three-sided, negative edge paradise that exhibits exquisite design and detail. To begin the project, the construction team sought the help of a structural engineer. Brian Peppin of Blue Haven Pools and Spas explains, “When we first arrived, this project was basically a house with steps coming down from the porch leading to a traditional backyard. After speaking with the homeowners, we wanted to get the pool and deck elevated to the same level as the original porch. We actually had to bring in a structural engineer to make the entire structure level with the first floor of the

home. We did soil testing and a lot of footing work to ensure that the deck and pool were built to top quality.” Brian and Rob Peppin, along with their Blue Haven team, set the sturdy pool foundation in place and constructed the pool with impeccable attention to detail. The construction features a 360 degree spillover spa, a natural stone waterfall that runs over the deck into the backyard area, and ice-crackle glass tile that contains little, tiny cracks in each piece, giving the pool a subtle shimmer. The travertine coping was a special request by the homeowners, who wanted something that appeared very elegant and seamless. Travertine, however, traditionally comes in 12 inch or 24 inch pieces, which would lead to a large number of grout joints. To achieve the seamless look desired by the homeowners, Blue Haven special ordered eight to ten foot travertine tiles that were cut to fit the curvature

of the pool, thereby minimizing the number of grout joints. To complement the sleek design, the pool is equipped with a high-tech automated maintenance system. “The big feature this pool has is the MDX Main Drain debris trapping system,” explains Brian. “With this system, any debris and leaves that get into the pool become trapped inside the drains in a canister, which can easily be removed and cleaned. This pool has a top-ofthe-line, automated Easy-Care

system with saltwater purification, the MDX Main Drain, and a fully automated control system that can be operated by a remote from inside the home.” With such a beautiful design and modern technologies that make pool maintenance worry-free, it’s no wonder that this pool makes a lasting impression. v For more information, call Blue Haven Pools and Spas at 843-552-6000 or visit bluehaven.com.

Jon explains, “Starting at the beginning, the entire framing package, from the ground up, was all ordered on OrderOnSite.com. Furthermore, all of the exterior supplies, the pressure treated lumber to build the railings, the columns, the hardiplank, the fiber-cement material that makes up the siding and window trim, the drywall, the tape, and the mud came from OrderOnSite.com. The homeowner was able to go online, place the order, and have

it delivered the next day. There’s no hassle about where it’s coming from, when it’s going to arrive, or how it will be delivered. So, the site is a great tool for do-it-yourselfers or people buying for their contractor.” A first for the home building community, OrderOnSite.com is sure to bring much needed ease to purchasing building materials. v For more information, visit orderonsite.com. HE SAID / SHE SAID

The Ins & Outs

of Pool Design and Maintenance Jenny and Josh Atkinson, the mother-and-son duo of Atkinson Pools and HotSpring Spas, speak up about the design and care of Charleston’s pools. Jenny Atkinson (left) and Josh Atkinson (right) of Atkinson Pools & Hot Springs Spas

Question:

He Said:

She Said:

In the wintertime, do you recommend maintaining or covering your pool until the warmer months return?

He Said: I recommend keeping your pool uncovered for as long as possible or even never covering it at all. A pool isn't just a place to swim; it's a gathering area for the family, and it’s also an aesthetic feature to any outdoor living area that should be enjoyed year round.

She Said: I actually agree on this one. It is much more economical to keep the wintertime water clear than to turn a green swamp into a clear blue paradise in the spring. If a pool is located under a tree that sheds its leaves in the fall, a mesh safety cover will keep the water clean throughout the season.

From a professional standpoint, what is the best way to keep children safe around the pool?

He Said: There is no better way than proper supervision and training; an adult should always monitor children when they are swimming. Furthermore, new pool owners with young children should enroll their kids in swimming lessons at an early age.

She Said: For even more protection, a safety cover, safety fence, or pool alarm adds security and peace of mind for the parents of roaming little ones. Also, installing a lock near the top of the doors leading to the pool can be a good preventative measure.

What’s the biggest advantage of owning your own pool?

He Said: Some customers want a therapy pool; some want a pool for family swimming, while others want one for visual and aesthetic reasons. Depending on the homeowner, all of these could be the biggest advantage.

She Said: To me, the biggest advantages are simply family togetherness, fitness, and the fantastic landscape design that often accompanies a new pool.

He Said: As far as coping goes, one of my personal favorites is tumbled travertine. It's cooler to the touch in the hot sun, and it's not abrasive or slick. For the interior of the pool, I'm a big fan of smoother, exposed aggregate, quartz finishes. They aren't abrasive on the feet like a pebble finish can be at times, and they are highly durable.

She Said: You can tell we’re related because we have similar tastes! I agree with him. Cool, smoother coping surfaces are the best. I, too, love the exposed aggregate finishes because they offer the pool owner many color choices, which create the mood they want in their new outdoor living room.

What is the best type of pool coping and interior finishes?

A life by the sea costs more than some homeowners anticipate. Humidity and salty air present their own special challenges on Lowcountry homes. Mold, mildew, and rot keep you pouring money into replacing exposed and vulnerable wood. Carolina Kitchens offers a line of cabinets that are designed for homes on the coast. These cabinets are made of marine-grade polymer and stainless steel hardware that prevent damage to your coastal kitchen. Carolina Kitchens provides cabinets in several colors and styles and assures customers—with a lifetime warranty—that their products are built to last.

here are gentlemen all over the world, but it takes a truly special man to be a Southern gentleman. Tommy Baker, owner of Baker Motors, makes being one of these distinct gentlemen seem as easy as the breeze that whips through your hair on a warm Sullivan’s Island day. With his blue jeans, crisp white button-down, blazer, and penny loafers, Tommy hospitably invited the Charleston Home + Design team into his island abode to hear tales of the life and home he’s built in the Lowcountry. Referring to himself as a “Hungryneck,” Tommy has spent the majority of his life in the Charleston area growing his car dealership (along with his family) and making a striking impact in the community. Between falling in love with his wife, Vickie, nearly 30 years ago, buying Baker Motor Company in 1988, teaching an entrepreneur class at College of Charleston, and serving on MUSC Children's Hospital Advisory Board, Tommy has managed to create a stellar reputation of community involvement. Busy with the process of expanding and updating his business with the purchase of the Buick, GMC, Cadillac dealership in West Ashley, Tommy took a moment to offer us a relaxed afternoon on Conch Creek, complete with riveting conversation, striking vistas, and a grand tour of his Barbados-inspired home.

ou’re a true Lowcountry native. You were born at Roper St. Francis hospital; you spent the first seven years of your life in a quaint, yellow Charleston single on Chapel Street; you lived in Mt. Pleasant, went to The Citadel, and owned several homes on Isle of Palms when you were a student. When you decided to settle down in the Lowcountry, how did you choose this spot on Sullivan’s Island? TOMMY: Growing up here made me choose Sullivan’s Island. I’m a Mt. Pleasant boy; I had homes on the Isle of Palms in college, but Sullivan’s Island has always been my ground zero—the place I

114

wanted to be. There was a particular spot, which you can see from my house, that we called Ski Beach. Growing up as part of the lower middle class, we had skis but no ski boat. People would come by Ski Beach with their boats, and we would take our skis and grab on to one of the boats coming by. The boats would tote us around the inlet. People living in Mt. Pleasant and Sullivan’s Island would rally there on the weekends. We even built a ski ramp out in the water, but we could never jump that thing—we always fell. Memories like these tied me to Sullivan’s. When Vickie and I were living in Chapel Hill [North Carolina], we began looking for a second home near Charleston.

There was a house here on the lot we have now on Conch Creek, but the owner didn’t want to sell it. So, I just made him a ridiculous offer. I bought the house, tore it down, and built a new house for us. That was almost 25 years ago, though, and this home seems new and modern. Did you remodel over the years? TOMMY: When Hugo hit, the storm destroyed a good bit of the first house we built, so we tore it down completely and started again. Years later, we moved off of Sullivan’s Island and began renting a home downtown. After just a little while, I realized that I didn’t want to rent anymore, so we bought a place on Tradd

Street. We liked it on Tradd so much that we bought a place on South Battery, too! At that point, Vickie and I couldn’t decide if we wanted to tear down the Sullivan’s Island house and re-do it one more time or not. So, I asked the kids. My three children, Cassie, Katie, and Harrison, wanted to stay on Sullivan’s because it’s where they grew up. So, I said, “Okay, let’s make it something special, then.” We wanted a place for the grandkids to come over and a place where we could entertain. So, we tore down the house again and began constructing the home that stands here today.

dealership in the very small town of Clinton, North Carolina. I was a bachelor, and there was not much going on in Clinton at the time. After a while, the cows started looking good—a little humor for you. Anyway, I had a chance to go to Birmingham. I was in my late 20s or early 30s, and I said I would go anywhere that had two story buildings. So, I ended up in Alabama. I was on a big yacht trip to Fort Lauderdale—it was called a Millionaire’s Weekend. The long of it short, two of the guys on the trip said, “You need to meet Victoria Cunningham,” and one of the guys gave me her phone number. I came back and called her, and she didn’t want to go out! Finally, she agreed to meet for a

drink; three months later we got married. It will be 30 years in June. Congratulations! In today’s culture, being together thirty years is impressive. You’ve been in the car business even longer, though—what experiences over the years led to your desire to be in this business? TOMMY: Well, I graduated from high school and took a bus to Parris Island (I had always wanted to be a Marine). I spent four years in the service; then, I came back to Charleston. I originally wanted to go to California because I had been accepted to the University of Cali-

fornia Los Angeles (UCLA)—I thought that was where I was supposed to be. That summer, however, I played industrial baseball on the weekends in the Lowcountry. The Citadel baseball coach was playing in the same league as me; around the same time, they had just come out with a new program for Veterans during the Vietnam era (I didn’t go to Vietnam, but I was still considered a veteran). The new program allowed me to go to class at The Citadel but exempted me from doing all the things that the cadets had to do. So, the baseball coach talked me into going to The Citadel instead of UCLA. I was older than a cadet; I had hair, and they didn’t. I was like the old man on the team at 23.

TOMMY: I hate to say it, but I’m never happy. I wake up broke every day. What I mean is, I wake up hungry every day. My premise is, “What did you do today?” I never think, “What can you do tomorrow?” I’m on a day plan. The question is always, “Have we done everything today to make ourselves be the best we possibly can?” Anything less than that, I find totally intolerable. I deal with the fundamentals— blocking and tackling—every day. You just have to be committed and buy into what you’re doing to be successful. What roles do your employees have in your future business plans? (above) This porch, attached to the master bedroom, features Bahama shutters and comfortable outdoor furniture. (below) The front porch, with checkerboard natural stone flooring, houses unique plants that give the home an eclectic vibe.

During my time at The Citadel, I worked part-time selling Oldsmobiles at James Oldsmobile in Charleston. I always tried to invest the money I earned appropriately (I had two homes here in Charleston, one on Isle of Palms and a second home that I rented out—pretty nice for a college kid). By my senior year, I knew I wanted to be in the car business. I knew I wanted to be a car dealer. Certainly your business has grown since your beginnings at James Oldsmobile— you now own several dealerships in the area. Your business philosophy of adaptation and change, which has developed over your years of experience, reminds me of the philosophy you used when building your three Sullivan’s Island homes. Can you tell me more about it? TOMMY: I think you constantly have to reinvent yourself; the only thing that remains constant is change. You have to continually think about how you can make your business better. You reach pinnacles where you’re really good and things are going very well. Then, it’s almost as if you have to tear it all down and start over

120

again to keep things fresh. When you don’t, people become lethargic, complacent, and comfortable. You don’t have to be the biggest, but to play the game, you have to be better than most. You seem to have a go-getter attitude. Is that how you would describe yourself?

TOMMY: I love to see my employees grow, and I love to see them advance. My job is to make sure they have that opportunity to grow and advance. When you’re not busy managing the affairs of Baker Motors and working with your employees, what do you like to do in your relaxation time? TOMMY: Vickie and I love the Bahamas.

We like to run and paddle board; I like to go skeet shooting, too. We have a boat, and I think we enjoy that the most. Rumor has it we frequent Hall’s Chophouse. We’ve always got something going on, and we’ve got friends everywhere. We like to travel; we’re going to Paris for our 30th anniversary this summer. No matter where your travels take you, though, you seem to still appreciate the value of home and your Southern roots. You even call yourself a “Hungryneck,” in reference to your Mt. Pleasant childhood. Where did this name come from? TOMMY: I grew up all over the Lowcountry, and I remember, about two years ago, I was doing something at The Citadel and George Benson [President, College of Charleston] introduced me. He said, “We’re not entirely sure where Tommy Baker is from. Is he a city boy or is he an East Cooper boy?” I looked

to my right and there was Jim and Anne Edwards [former South Carolina governor and wife]. I said to him, “Governor, where am I from?” And, he said, “Tommy, you’re a ‘Hungryneck’ from Mt. Pleasant.” You know, the smallest amount of

meat on a chicken is on the neck, and when you finish eating the meat, you’re still hungry. Mount Pleasant folks were known as “Hungrynecks” back in the day. And, I’m proud to be a Hungryneck from Mt. Pleasant.

hen North Charleston resident Angela Woody and her husband Phillip determined that their blank slate of a backyard needed a little T.L.C., they decided to take action by entering the Charleston Home + Design $15,000 Backyard Makeover Contest. Lucky for them, they won! As a result, the dynamic duo, Nick Popovich and Patty Craven of DIG: Designing Innovative Gardens, was sent to revamp their vacant yard. After winning the Backyard Makeover, Angela and Phillip were inspired to install a pool in their backyard. Upon flipping through the pages of Charleston Home + Design magazine, they chose Blue Haven Pools to build their new pool, featuring pavers from Accu-Brick.

nother successful Family Circle Cup has come and gone. It seems only fitting that Serena took home her 40th career single title at the 40th edition of the Family Circle tournament. Being such a momentous occasion, the Charleston Home + Design magazine team was excited to take part. For the third year in a row, we helped match furniture companies with local interior designers to create six courtside Ace Sponsor Suites, each of which were inspired by a participating tennis powerhouse. The Sabine Lisicki Suite

Designed by: Carly Olmstead of Nadeau • Furnished by: Nadeau

The word eclectic comes to mind with every corner of this design. Nadeau manager and designer Carly Olmstead intended that because of Sabine Lisicki’s tendency to wear tribal prints in her tennis attire. So, it worked out perfectly that Nadeau was paired with the tennis icon. With a revolving stock of furniture, artwork, and accent pieces from suppliers around the world, Carly’s vision was a cinch to construct, and the finished room was a pleasure to visit. The Samantha Stosur Suite

Designed by: Jamie Fernandez and Buff Coles of GDC • Furnished by: GDC Home Interiors

Part beach abode, part athlete lounge, this GDC suite offers the best of both style and durability. With moisture-wicking, stain-resistant fabric, each and every piece of furniture in the room was meant for heavy usage, outdoor exposure, and serious chicness. Designers Jamie and Buff—inspired by Australian tennis player Samantha Stossur—incorporated Aussie landscape photographs and bright tennis-ball-yellow pillows with the rich Lowcountry styling for which GDC is known. After a tough round on the court, any player would feel at home here!

Deep leather seating, warm mahogany tables, and a unique hot air balloon basket bar make up the highlights of this Bauer International suite. Designed by tennis enthusiast Shannon Brown, a representative of Bauer, the room exudes a strength that Shannon feels Serena Williams—her player inspiration—exhibits both on and off the court. For those of us who don’t have Serena’s skill, having a drink bellied up to this exquisite bar in this cozy room might make us feel as prominent as Serena, if only for a moment.

A room full of European elegance, this Hunter Graybill design feels like the sitting room of a welltravelled tennis darling, which makes sense since it was inspired by French tennis player Marion Bartoli. With weathered luggage and vintage sitting chairs—provided by Next to New, a home furnishings consignment store—the suite proves that even a home furnished with gently used items can be one that exudes personal style. Having never designed a consignment room before, veteran designer Hunter found the task delightfully challenging and ultimately satisfying.

The Vera Zvonareva Suite Designed by: Annette Ellard of Creative Cotton Company • Furnished by: Danco Modern Furniture

A designer for 25 years, Annette approached this project with ease. She knew immediately—after researching her selected muse, tennis star Vera Zvonareva—that she wanted the room to convey youth and vitality with allusions to Vera’s home country, Russia. With the help of Danco (and their beautiful red statement couch), Annette created just that. After working so often in traditional Charleston homes, Annette was excited to explore the components of modern design. With that in mind, she hand-crafted a spring green tennis ball topiary as a finishing touch!

A lot of thought went into this Bauer International Ace Suite (the second room furnished by Bauer) with influences from the Baltic coast, the homeland of Polish tennis phenom Agnieszka Radwanska, the inspiration for Shannon Brown’s design. The nautical theme, emblematic of Bauer’s furnishings, is seen through the use of baby bamboo, blue and white upholstery, and of course, schooner art prints. Shannon admits the ease at which she was able to craft the suite, noting that Bauer’s product line is complementary. Shannon Brown of Bauer International

When chosen to construct a dream home in Naples, Florida, the builder needed materials up to the task – functional products with strength to withstand extreme conditions and beauty to inspire. He called the people of CEMEX. The vision began to take form with a concrete block shell for durability, and the selection of a smooth stucco finish for timeless beauty. A three-color blend of CEMEX decorative pavers provided an elegant finishing touch, turning the challenge of building the client’s dream home into a stroll on the beach. For more information on our full line of decorative pavers and masonry materials, call (843) 744-2992 or visit the CEMEX showroom at 2821B Azalea Drive in Charleston.

The ABCs of Hurricane Home Preparedness

N

ot since Hurricane Hugo has the Charleston area suffered a direct hit from a high category storm. The ABCs of Hurricane Home Preparedness

ANCHOR

your property with these products and tips. Inspect your property for items that could become airborne. Dead tree branches and patio furniture are just a few of the unexpected natural weapons that can cause damage by flying through unprotected windows and doors. Have a licensed plumber install a backflow valve in the main line to your sewer. Backflow valves are designed to block drain pipes temporarily and prevent return flow. Strap down your propane or natural gas tank. If there is flood potential, turn the appliance off at the gas shutoff valve, not at the meter.

Anchor Yourself Determine where you and your family will go if evacuation is necessary. Be prepared to drive 20 to 50 miles inland to locate a safe place, and tell someone outside of the storm area where you are going. On the Department of Public Safety website (sctraffic. org/evacroutes.html), evacuation routes are detailed for each portion of the greater Charleston area. If you plan to leave, do so early to avoid flooding roads and fallen trees. And, make sure your gas tank is full!

These impact rated windows, provided by Southern Lumber and Millwork for this RS Custom Homes project, prove that hurricane preparedness does not mean sacrificing the beauty of your home.

BRACE

your property with these products and tips

Install wind loaded garage doors or retrofit your existing garage doors. Wind loaded garage doors do not fold or crumble during a storm, thus decreasing the likelihood that your roof will detach from your home because of built up air pressure. Replace or secure your roof with closed cell spray foam insulation and roof straps or clips. Metal roofing is stronger than asphalt shingles and remains just as wind resistant many years after installation. Spray foam insulation bolsters the strength of your home by adhering the roof sheathing to the rafters and studs. Roof straps and clips anchor the lower floors and roof to the foundation, greatly decreasing the chances of the roof lifting in high wind velocities.

Brace Yourself If your family decides to stay at home for the storm, brace yourself for the worst. Store enough food and water for at least three days—and don’t forget your pets. Emergency kits with everyday supplies, first aid materials, and tools are highly recommended. A detailed list of suggested supplies— flashlights, prescription medication, and unscented household bleach, for example—is on the Charleston County website (charlestoncounty. org/guides.htm). Consider adding a generator to your list to make the time post-storm more comfortable and safe.

Both front doors and garage doors can be points of weakness during a storm. Plan ahead by investing in hurricane resistant products to protect your home. This unique front door was provided by Southern Lumber and Millwork, and these carriage style garage doors by All About Garage Doors.

COVER

your property with these products and tips.

Keep storm panels in accessible storage for quick installation. Storm panels are plywood’s lightweight cousin—similar in construction and usage but made from aluminum, steel, dense plastic, or mesh fabric. Invest in permanent hurricane shutters. Hurricane shutters are generally made of aluminum (not to be confused with the flimsy plastic shutters that decorate some homes) and are tested to stop flying debris from penetrating the windows.

Photos provided by Lowcountry Hurricane Protection and Shutters

Accordion and roll down shutters are utilitarian in look, but will ease your nerves in a storm. Colonial, Bahama, and board & batten shutters are both decorative and effective. Consider replacing your windows with impact resistant glass. Impact resistant glass has a laminate core, which stops flying objects should they penetrate the window, reducing the risk of an impact fracture. Window film minimizes damage by holding the pieces of the glass in place if the window is broken.

(top) Bahama shutters made from aluminum can be a stylish option when preparing your home for a storm. (above left) These colonial shutters, pictured closed, are easy to secure before an incoming hurricane. (above right) Board & batten shutters provide a traditional Charleston look with modern safety features.

Cover Yourself Understand your homeowners insurance policy. Discounts are given to those who improve their home’s resistance to damage caused by high winds or hurricanes. The improvements themselves can be cheaper if you apply for a South Carolina Safe Home grant. To do so, simply get a Safe Home Exam and visit South Carolina’s government website (scsafehome.sc.gov). And, when your project is complete, don’t forget to take advantage of our state’s Residential Retrofit tax credit!

Hurricane + Disaster Expo PREVIEW

C

harleston Home + Design magazine has partnered with ABC News 4 to present the 8th annual Charleston Hurricane + Disaster Expo, which will be held Friday, August 24 from 10am to 5pm at The Citadel’s Johnson Hagood Stadium. This year, the Expo will feature two disaster simulations (hurricane and earthquake), led by Dr. Shane Woolf from the Charleston Medical Society, a group consisting of local doctors that mobilize when any of 14 different disaster events occur. The simulations will depict the immediate aftermath of a disaster. With a backdrop of a fully assembled Western Shelter—a disaster response tent—Dr. Woolf and his assistants will work on victims from this fictionalized mass casualty situation. Then, the ABC News 4 team will perform live, non-scripted interviews of the doctors, giving specators insight into what they can do to prevent injuries like the ones portrayed.

plus! 220

CH+D • Summer 2012

The Expo is a public service and, as such, is free to attend. Additionally, the first 500 attendees will receive a free hurricane kit, filled with items such as work gloves, flashlights, and rain ponchos. Local, state, and federal agencies—as well as local protection companies—will participate, sharing tips and advice on how to prepare for the threats that consistently lurk in the Atlantic. In conjunction with the Hurricane + Disaster Expo, the Custom Home + Remodel Show will be taking place. So, for those who are interested in learning more about hurricane protection products (or just want to give their home a little facelift), representatives for home design and remodeling companies will be available to discuss your desired project. Everyone could be better prepared for a hurricane. So, join CH+D magazine in our quest to keep Charleston homes—and the families within them—safe.

Disaster Preppers Meet Charleston's own "Disaster Preppers" who will demonstrate what they do to prepare for the big one.

LOOSE ENDS

Where Do You Eat in Charleston? Customer Jordan Lash of West Ashley enjoyed a Lowcountry dish on his date with wife Haley. They enjoyed it in the restaurant; now, you can delight in the savory recipe at home.

Sermet's Downtown 276 King Street, Downtown (843)853-7775

“Sermet's Downtown is amazing. My wife and I have been here millions of times. It’s the perfect place to enjoy a meal, whether you are a local or a tourist. The ambience of the restaurant is upscale and fresh, and the food presentation is classy. The recent renovations have let in even more sunlight than before, resembling a Charleston style home. We always recommend Sermet's”.

Grilled Pork Tenderloins Ingredients for Brine: 4 cups

strong sweet tea

3 tbsp

crushed black peppercorns

Preperation of Tenderloin:

1 tbsp

fennel seed

Combine sweet tea, pepper, fennel seed, bay leaf, salt, and sugar. Brine tenderloin overnight in sweet tea mixture. Place the tenderloins on the grill and cook, turning frequently, until an instant-read thermometer inserted into the thickest part reads 155 degrees Fahrenheit. Transfer to a platter and allow the meat to rest for 10 minutes before carving. Cook syrup, butter, and rosemary over low heat, whisking often until butter is melted. Top grilled tenderloin with maple rosemary butter. Carve and Enjoy!

1 3 tbsp 1/4 cup

bay leaf salt sugar

Ingredients for Maple Rosemary Butter: 1/2 cup

maple syrup

1/2 cup

unsalted butter

2 tbsp
