NOV NOV. 12 12, 2010 • TENNESSEE 82 82, CHATTANOOGA 62 KNOXVILLE, Tenn. --- The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga men’s basketball team dropped its season opener on the road at No. 20 Tennessee 82-62 Friday night in Thompson-Boling Arena. The Mocs could not climb out of an early hole and drop to 0-1 on the season. The Vols jumped out to a 14-3 lead early in the game behind seven quick points from Tobias Harris. UTC answered with a barrage of three-pointers from Keegan Bell. The junior hit three straight from behind the arc to cut the Tennessee lead to 21-16 midway through the first half. Bell’s three at the 10:53 mark was the Mocs’ last field goal for the next nine minutes of play. That drought was brought on by 0-11 shooting from the floor and five turnovers, allowing the Vols to go on a 19-2 run to take control. UT went on to lead 45-26 at the break. Things didn’t get much better for the Mocs in the second half. UT opened up its largest lead of the game 72-41 at the 6:32 mark on another jumper by Harris. Harris led Tennessee with 18 points on 7-11 shooting from the field, including 1-1 from 3-pt. range and 3-6 on free throws. Bell led all scorers with 20 points on 6-12 shooting, including 6-10 from 3-pt. range and 2-2 from the charity stripe. Bell’s six three-pointers tied a careerhigh for the third time. Junior Omar Wattad was the only other Moc to hit double figures. He finished with 13 points on 4-17 shooting, 1-11 from behind the arc and 4-5 from the line. Chattanooga shot 33% from the field and 9-34 (26.5%) from 3-pt. land. Turnovers also hurt Chattanooga tonight. UTC coughed up the ball 19 times, giving the Vols 19 points off of those miscues. NOV. 15, 2010 • AUSTIN PEAY 70, MOCS 67 CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. --- The fairy tale ending turned into a nightmare in the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga’s home opener in McKenzie Arena. Austin Peay’s Caleb Brown hit a three-pointer from the top of the key with 0.2 seconds remaining to thwart Chattanooga’s comeback bid in a 70-67 thriller. The loss spoiled a good effort from sophomore Josh Odem. The reserve guard paced the Mocs with 15 points to go with three assists. He was joined in double figures by Chris Early with 11 and Ricky Taylor with 10. Austin Peay’s Josh Terry led all scorers with 17 points, 12 coming in the second half. Anthony Campbell added 15, all in the first half. The Govs led by as many as seven in the second frame, 45-38, only to see the scrappy Mocs battle back. A Terry layup made it 67-64 with 2:29 left, but the defenses and pressure ratcheted up a couple of notches on both ends of the floor. The drama hit a fever pitch when Wattad nailed a three-pointer from the top of the key to tie it, 67-67, with 29 seconds to play. That set up Brown’s heroics hitting his three over a hand coming off a ball screen for the win. Bell scored just three points, but he had a gamehigh eight assists and two steals. Jefferson led the Mocs’ effort on the boards with six. Peay dominated the glass with a 44-32 advantage. John Fraley grabbed 11 of the boards as the Govs had 18 on the offensive end, converting them for 16 points. Odem’s 15 points keyed a strong effort by the Mocs’ bench. Chattanooga’s reserves scored 30 compared to 17 by their counterparts from Clarksville. In a game that featured 12 lead changes and seven ties, it came down to who had the ball last. a to blk s min 1 3 2 0 23 0 2 0 1 29 0 0 2 1 35 4 2 0 1 33 0 5 0 3 31 1 0 1 0 7 2 2 0 1 5 0 0 0 1 2 2 1 1 2 25 0 1 0 1 10 10 16 611 200 DEADBALL REBOUNDS 6
