JULY 2009

CHATMOSS COUNTRY CLUB

Thoughts from the President Dear Chatmoss member,

If you are on the Chatmoss Email list, I am sure you are aware that you have been getting a great deal of emails from

Michele Benton, our club manager. Michele and I want to thank you for your patience concerning this over the past few months. The reason for the many emails has been to keep you informed of all the things the club has to offer. As

you know, the club needs your support and we feel that we need to do all we can to put the club at the top of your

list. Hopefully, good things come to those who wait.

We have been working with Chatmoss Web Systems to come up with an information system catered specifically for

you. Based on our research, some of which were good suggestions from club members, we have come up with the

following:

If you will go to the member sign-in page of the Chatmoss Website, www.chatmosscc.com/login, and simply put in your last name and member number, you will see a link that says “update your member information and email pref-

erences”. Review the categories that are listed and uncheck any box that you are not interested in. The first box,

“weekly update” will be an email sent out early each week with highlights and information about all club activities

for the upcoming week. Hopefully, you will not uncheck this box. The remainder of the boxes should be self explanatory.

Hopefully, this new information system will help everyone get what they need without being bothered by too many emails. Remember, this is work in progress, so please continue to send us your suggestions. Thank you for your input and your patience.

Will Pannill

President

P.S. If you are not currently on an email list, please update your email preference and add your email address. Trivia Question: Have you ever slid down a bannister? Answer is on the calendar page.

Comments from Michele Benton,

General Manager

Like the summer storms that roll in and spill large amounts of rain at times, the club mirrors the skies. The club is extremely active thanks to the support of our members. Welcome to our new members and their families, it is great to see all the new faces at the club.

We appreciate all the fore-fathers and mothers of the club who came out last year to share their stories on the history of Chatmoss. Did you know that there used to be equestrian trails on the property? Do you remember the “bubble” over the tennis courts? Are you aware that the house on the property where the clubhouse now sits has gone through two fires since the early 1900ʼs? These stories along with highlights of our 50 year anniversary weekend have been compiled into a CD for all our members to enjoy. I would like to say a special thanks to all those who took their time and energy to help with this documentary. Also, a special thanks to John Collins who graciously donated his time and effort to host the film. We will premier this documentary on July 19, 2009 at 2:00pm in the main clubhouse. There is no charge for attending, however, we do ask that you call for reservations for yourselves, family and friends who may wish to join you for the presentation. Complimentary Champagne, Petit Fours and Chocolate Dipped Strawberries will be served. You may purchase copies of the CD for $25 in advance or $30 the day of the premier.

The club needs your help with controlling our towel cost. Several years ago, the club made the investment of a washer and dryer for the sports complex. The purpose of the purchase was for the club employees to wash and stock the towels, not paying the higher prices of a linen service, therefore, saving money. Upon completion of the Fitness Facility, additional towels were added to the inventory. Since February the clubʼs towel inventory has been cut in half. The towels in the sports complex and fitness facility are property of the club and need to be left at the club for cleaning. The towels in the Golf shop are provided by a linen service, these towels are paid for by each one that is used. By making sure to return the towels and only use towels when they are needed, we can save the club additional expense.

Effective, July 1, 2009, we will be making price adjustments to our beverage pricing structure. The club has not adjusted its beverage prices since October 2006. A price comparison was completed of four area restaurants and the club on all non-alcoholic beverage, wine, beer, and mixed drinks. The biggest difference we found was the size of the drink. The club pours, on average one ounce more than other establishments in town. It is important that we give our members a GOOD drink, but slight price adjustments must be made. A price increase of .50 cents will be made to house wines by the glass, bottled beers, iced tea, coffee; and bar well drinks (house brand liquors) bottled wine prices, name brand liquors and upscale mixed drink prices will remain the same. This price increase will still keep Chatmoss Country Clubʼs bar prices at or below the average cost per ounce that the other four local establishments charge.

In a recent conversation with a member of 15 years they said, “they had never stepped foot in the Sports Complex”. I would like to take this opportunity to invite all members that have never seen or been in the Sports Complex to call to set up a tour. With the new addition of the fitness center and the re-design of the driving range, this amenity is a great addition to our fine clubhouse and golf course, and I would love to show it off.

Hats off to the 28 members who participated in Angela Naffʼs, Director of Fitness, first Boot Camp training program in May. Drill Sergeant Angela and her helpers, Telisha and Michelle, made exercise look like fun. It took hard work and dedication to stick with the program.

As you will see by the pages of this newsletter, many great events and services are available to all members and their guests to enjoy this summer. We appreciate your continued support.

See you at the club.

We are into the heat of the summer. We have had a lot of activity on the courts so far this summer. Some of you are coming out to play early in the morning to try to beat the summer heat. If you plan to play before 9:00 am, please call the shop and let us know you are coming out early the next day so we can have a court ready for you. To help us better manage the use of the courts both inside and out, we ask that when you come to play, check in with the shop if you have any guests with you. This will ensure that the appropriate fees are paid. By checking in with us, we can keep accurate guest records and track play on our tennis courts. Thank you for the help. In the event when you are playing and you see weather coming in, please give yourself enough time to get off the courts before the rain comes in. If you plan to keep on playing indoors, we ask that you please clean the clay off your shoes to keep the indoor playing surface as clean as possible. Stepping into the tennis two step outside the pro shop doors will do this. We are very busy with lessons this summer. If you are playing at night after the pro shop closes, please turn the lights off when finished playing. The lights are not on a timer and need to be shut off manually. If you are interested in getting a lesson time, call the pro shop and see what might be available. Remember, that if you have a scheduled lesson and you can not make it, please call and cancel. We have a number of players on a waiting list. If you do not come to your lesson, you will be charged for the time. Please check the upcoming events for any event that is interesting to you. Enjoy your games.

Last year I gave monthly rainfall totals each month as that was in the forefront of my mind each and every day. I was constantly tracking precipitation and figuring how much irrigation to apply each day to make up the deficit, while doing rain dances and searching for blacksnakes to kill and hang in a tree. Someone told me that would bring rain. This year that hasn’t been necessary, so I can’t really say how much rain we’ve had. Only that I’d prefer to see a little less. Last June we used 4.6 million gallons of irrigation water. This June we are on pace to use about 1.3 million gallons. A large portion of that has been used to water in fertilizer and various control products like pre-emerge, fungicides, insecticides, etc. Only a few times have we had to water because we were getting too dry. As I mentioned last month, mostly we are trying to stay in a routine now, as cutting grass has been a challenge with the wet conditions. Missed days combined with accelerated growth means we have our work cut out for us to ever catch up. On a positive note, our transition from ryegrass to bermuda is going fairly well. We have some striping in the fairways where last year we mowed in a consistent pattern each time to burn in mower stripes. Combined with some difficulties we had getting reels adjusted last fall, we ended up with strips of overseeding that were quicker to develop. Now that those thicker areas have transitioned, you see stripes where the bermuda is much slower to recover. While it doesn’t look great, those areas seem to have enough bermuda that they should recover fine. This year we are rotating our mowing patterns, and plan to grind our reels right before overseeding to ensure a quality cut. We will have to sod some places on the course not related to the strips. The tees on three will need some sodding, but overseeding is not really the issue. The cool shaded areas on three seem to be more of a winter kill issue, not overseeding. Jody

POOL NEWS

Well here it is -- July already. Hard to believe a whole month of summer is already gone. The pool has warmed up nicely, and although I can't predict the weather, June was a great month. July 4th festivities will be games, food, and fun, fun, fun. Come join us for a fun-filled day. We will open at 10:00 A.M. and close at 8:00 P.M. Just a reminder. All paperwork, including a picture, must be turned in to leave your children ten years old or older at the pool. Also, guests are always welcome, but they must be signed in; and they are allowed three visits per month no matter who they accompany. Don't forget swim lessons with a guard of your choice. Book your parties at the pool. Call or stop by and see me. As always, see you in the water.

Parents of Sports Campers: Our June Camp was big fun. We added a second field trip that included bowling and a trip to the museum. There is still limited space available for our July camp. Camp will be Monday, July 13, thru Friday, July 17, 2009. The cost is $140.00 per child and $100.00 per child for families with multiple children. Lunch will be provided every day and each child needs to bring his or her own tennis racket, sneakers, and swim gear (bathing suit, towel, sunscreen, etc.). I would recommend that the childʼs things be labeled to avoid any mix-ups! The golf equipment is provided but the child is welcome to bring his or her golf club. Tennis rackets are available for purchase at a discounted price at the Sports Complex. If you have any questions, concerns, or suggestions, I would be happy to speak with you! Fitness NewsNaff, from Angela

Director of Fitness

Hello Chatmoss Members!! June was a great month, excellent weather, plentiful rain and starting summer off in a good direction! I hope everyone is taking time to enjoy the weather, and the extended day light hours in the evenings. Summer is a time we can easily take for granted. Take time to enjoy these long summer days and spend quality time with family and friends. Letʼs talk about a few simple calorie burning outdoor things we can do for exercise and fun! How about trying out some of the following: Hiking: A great way to escape the hectic city life and reduce stress is to hike in nature. The right pair of shoes is critical. For trail walking, specially designed trail-walking shoes or even running shoes may suffice. Todayʼs hiking boots come in lightweight varieties and keep your feet dry. The right fit is key to avoid blisters or chafing. Bring along some water and a snack for shorter hikes. Drink at least 4 ounces of water every 20 minutes, even in colder climates, to avoid dehydration. Insect repellant and sunscreen are also essential. Finally, pace yourself to enjoy nature. Build endurance and strength gradually before tackling some hills or a more challenging terrain. For safety: Stick to the trails, avoid brushing against foliage and hiking alone or in the dark. Ride your Bicycle: There is no better way to explore your neighborhood, city, backcountry roads or local trails than from the vantage point of a bicycle. And that is just one side-effect. Bicycling is a great cardiovascular workout and will strengthen legs, glutes and core. A 140-lb individual who bicycles at 10 miles per hour for an hour will burn nearly 400 calories, which makes for guilt-free eating of a 6-inch Double Roast Beef Sub sandwich. Bike longer and you can burn enough calories to eat a sandwich, and have your cake too. For safety: Always wear a helmet, obey all traffic laws, use hand signals and use lights when biking at dusk and dawn. For comfort: Invest in a pair of padded biking shorts (your bike seat will feel much better), a cycling jersey with pockets to store keys, snacks and a pair of gloves. Consult the experts at a bike store to evaluate which type of bicycle is right for you. Jog around the Block: The beauty about jogging or running is that you can do it anytime, anywhere. Keep your running shoes in your duffel bag, at work, in your suitcase or near the door, and youʼre always ready to explore the great outdoors. Even short bouts of jogging or running benefit your heart health, clear your head and calm your senses. For those running in unfamiliar places, running up stair cases, around tall buildings or a stadium still makes for a great workout. Running is great for busy professionals, because you can always make time to sneak in a quick run, even during travel. Simply ask the hotel concierge for a map of the city, a nearby park or trails and youʼre on your way. To prevent running injuries, invest in a good pair of running shoes and rotate them out about every 300-400 miles. The experts at the running store are trained to customize your fit. Jump Rope: Jumping rope is not only a great heart-pumping activity, but also increases body awareness. All you need to get started are some comfortable shoes, preferably aerobic shoes or cross-trainers that have a reinforced toe and cushioning for the balls of the feet. Choose a light-weight rope with foam grips that wonʼt slip away when palms get sweaty. The right length rope is one that reaches about chest high and is measured by stepping the foot on the center of the rope while bringing the handles up to the chest. Now all thatʼs left is to challenge each family member to a jumping rope contest while keeping it fun. Swimming: Swimming laps offers a great full-body workout. But even splashing around in the pool can be a great workout for young and old alike. The buoyancy of water reduces the “weight” of a person by about 90 percent, which means less stress on joints, bones and muscles. Many people enjoy working out against the resistance of water while benefiting from its cooling effect on the body. Here are some workout ideas: Cup your hands and pull water away from you to build strength. Use a noodle, hand-held paddles or a kick board. For those wanting to enjoy a group workout, consult your health club or YMCA about aquatic classes or masterʼs programs for swimming laps and donʼt forget to wear sunscreen when swimming outdoors. Inline Skating: Inline skating around the neighborhood or even a pick-up game of hockey make for great family fun and a workout. Most children love the idea. To prevent injuries, it is critical that adults and especially children wear helmets and protective gear on their wrists, knees and elbows. It may not look ʻcool,ʼ but can make the difference between a serious head injury or trauma and a minor injury or broken bones, so always be safe. Just Dance! You donʼt have to be Lady Gaga to “Just Dance.” Next time youʼre at a summer party, dance for fun and fitness: A 120-pound person who dances socially can burn almost 3 calories per minute or equals approximately 180 calories per hour, which is roughly the same amount of calories as a Bloody Mary. A 180-pound person dancing for an hour can burn over 750 calories, the equivalent of two slices of a pan crust cheese pizza. Encouraging children to be creative and move their bodies freely is fun and great for their mind and body. Teach your kids some new moves in your garden, the park or at the beach. Calming of the Mind: Finally, for those wanting to calm the mind, rolling out a yoga mat in nature for downward-facing dog positions and sun salutations may be the ideal stress-reliever during these tough economic times. Many yoga studios are also taking their workouts outdoors. When life gets tough, slowing the mind without any distractions can make for a spiritual recovery. Whatever outdoor activity gets you off the couch and into nature, remember to stay safe, hydrated and to protect your skin with sunscreen. Given the continued trend of rising obesity and overweight rates among American adults and children, why not make a change in your life? Regular exercise, better eating habits will change how you feel from within while others notice the slimmer, fitter you on the outside. I hope we found some things on the list we can use in our spare time this summer. Remember when you need direction with any Personal Training, or maybe some advice, please call me or find me in the fitness complex. Appointments are necessary. Cell: 276-226-0707 or via email: EliteFitness2009@live.com Also, I had maintenance ask me to mention the towels that are provided in the fitness complex gym and spinning room. We are starting to see many of our towels disappear. Please do not take club towels home with you. Please put them in the towel bin so they can be washed that day and set out for people who come in to workout after you finish. One more thing, please check your shoes before you come into the complex gym. There have been chunks of mud and dirt in there, and this could be taken care of if everyone would make sure their shoes are CLEAN before they come in to work out. If you see that you left a mess, please be respectable enough to clean it up. Please also remember water aerobics is still going on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Check your fitness calendar for times!! The YOGA classes are still going strong!! If you have not tried a Yoga class, I encourage you to come to one Yoga class. We are in a very relaxing setting, and participants are reporting encouraging things about their health to me. The most common report is, “My lower back pain is gone!” Try out a class and see how calming and unwinding the hour can be for your body. Classes are Tuesdays at 3:30pm and Thursdays at 8:30am. Please check the Fitness Calendar for July dates and times. Please pay attention to new changes in the Spinning schedule for July. We have read over the survey box, and we will be adjusting class accordingly. ALSO, if you are still interested in trying Beginner Spinning, itʼs every Monday evening from 5-5:30pm. If you have never been on a bike before, please arrive a few minutes early. 30 minutes flies by quickly! Your body will thank you. If you have bad knees or hips, come to Spinning and give them some therapy. There are also many other times for Spinning available. We have changed the evening times, please check the Fitness Calendar. If there are any questions about training or the complex in general, please call me 226-0707 or send me an email: elitefitness2009@live.com A shout out to all of my clients who have hung in there with me for the past 5 months, thanks for all the support and help ☺

The results of these extraordinary young men show their talents and dedication in proudly representing Chatmoss Country Club as their home course. Not a day goes by that you cannot see one of these young men at the club working hard on improving their golf game. The week of June 15th- June 19th Jack Adkins and Dylan Jensen qualified and competed against one another in the VSGA Junior Match Play in Roanoke, Virginia. Jack and Dylan were 2 out of 100 young adults that were invited to play on behalf of the best in the state of Virginia. In a process of elimination match play, the field of 100 was narrowed to four players, with Jack and Dylan, paired against each other in the semi-finals. It is amazing that these young competitors and best friends since pre-school could push each other to force a playoff to end the match and in the spirit of good friendship and sportsmanship, Dylan caddied for Jack in the championship round. Congratulations and thanks to Robert Weinerth and the parents of the young players for their push to give them the support that they need to succeed. Robert Weinerth has been a member of the Chatmoss Country Club staff for over 20 years and has been influential in many young lives, both in the discipline of golf and life. Recently, Robert received the Conference and State Coach of the Year for his dedication to the youth and game of golf. We appreciate all Robertʼs hard work and dedication as an employee of Chatmoss to share his passion for the game of golf.
