Since its inception 4 years ago Chartwell Media has overseen the company rebrand, moved all aspects of the Journal in-house, taken on new staff, moved offices, and developed into one of Mayfair’s leading media companies...and we have had a lot of fun in the process. The role of the Journal has remained the same throughout, to unite the Chartwell companies together. The promotion of our fine real estate from Chartwell Estates, insights into the construction industry via Chartwell Bespoke, Chartwell Monaco captures the glamour of the Côte d’Azur though renovation and design. We welcomed Chartwell Maintenance earlier on this year, to provide all clients with the continuity of care for their properties. This edition it is my pleasure to announce that we will also have a taster of what’s to come from the latest Chartwell service, Chartwell Assist, offering our clients the full lifestyle care package. 4 Years, 10 Editions and Growing Stronger Welcome to Chartwell Estates’ pages of this, our milestone 10th issue. Whilst I can’t claim to have been here since the first issue, I’ve enjoyed pretty much all of Chartwell’s roller-coaster entry into the London property scene. In the three years that I’ve been here I’ve seen Chartwell Estates morph and grow into a respected and professional private office, handlings our clients’ property requirements in a discrete and efficient manner. I take great pleasure in introducing Mr. Francis Holmes, Senior Associate, to our readership. Francis will bolster our efforts to serve our clients and partners in our ongoing business here in the Prime Central London market. We intend to be here for many issues of the Journal to come, offering you an open door and our professional advice and expertise – please contact us via privateoffice@chartwell-london.com and allow us to explain how we can best assist you.

The third quarter of 2014 has been a busy one for Chartwell Estates, seeing us on board the historic HMS Belfast on the River Thames here in the heart of London (page 22) but also playing host to our French partners who, it would seem have shaken Presidente Hollande’s austerity to report a resurgence in lending in the French property market. Mirabeau, who provide bespoke financing solutions on higher value purchases in France (page 24) report on this beautiful part of the world. From the same neck of the woods we are proud to present, in conjunction with Crown’s Collection, some of Europe finest and most luxurious ski chalets – just in time for you to reserve one for the coming ski season (page 10). A little further east and lapped by the azure blue Aegean Sea we’re proud to showcase a unique development close to Bodram in Turkey – a location proving extremely popular with high profile Russian visitors if the number of their super yachts moored in with the Aegean are anything to go by. Returning closer to home, we are lucky to present three very different, yet exquisite nonetheless, developments: One Tower Bridge, one of the most luxurious developments the Berkeley Group has ever created in the shadow of Tower Bridge (page 26), Alchemi who’ve introduced a subtle New York character to a small corner of Victoria with their exquisite “55 VS” scheme (page 18). If the companies mentioned in the previous paragraph are the prospectors of the Prime London Property Gold Rush then the following two companies are very much the guys who sell the picks and shovels, offering invaluable tools

to make the former successful. Omni Capital, backed by the considerable financial resources of their parent business, the CPC Group, have £1billion to lend into the Prime London market (page 32). Meanwhile at the other end of the transaction Cornerstone Tax, a tax advisory firm specialising in property taxation, highlight proposed changes to Capital Gains Tax (CGT) which will see non UK residents charged CGT at the same rate as UK taxpayers for profits on sale of residential property from April 2015 (page 16). As a final comment, I’d like to not only welcome you to our pages in this, the commemorative 10th edition of the Chartwell Journal, but also to our services – whatever your property requirements may be.

UK Property Tax is Changing… Boasting simultaneously one of the most complex and appealing tax regimes in the world, the UK has become a global centre of foreign investment over recent years. One of the biggest areas of investment is “real estate”, with London regarded as a “global” city.

QNUPS and Asset Management A QNUP is a type of offshore pension scheme (a qualifying non-UK pension scheme) which is useful for non-residents as well as residents of the UK. The main benefits are: 1. Any contributions are held outside the estate of an individual. 2. A wide range of assets may be held within a QNUP, including residential property or a portfolio of shares. 3. It is an “envelope” which is treated beneficially for tax purposes. In particular, it is free of capital gains tax and ATED (an annual tax on so-called “enveloped” dwellings). The main disadvantages are: 1. There is no tax relief on contributions and thus QNUPs are often used as “top-up” pensions by UK residents. 2. The charges for administering QNUPs are likely to be more expensive than for onshore pension schemes.

Clearly, a pension is intended to provide for the retirement of an individual. Thus, it is sometimes used to purchase residential property so that it can be done up and rented out commercially. When retirement comes, it is possible to purchase offshore annuities which can continue to hold assets, such as a portfolio of shares or a property, in order to generate an income. Certain types of offshore annuities are relatively flexible. It can be arranged that following the death of an annuitant, any assets held within the annuity may pass to the annuitant’s next of kin. Thus the same assets, whether a portfolio of shares or property may be contributed to a QNUP, transferred into an annuity and then passed to the next of kin. representing a range of architectural styles and periods of history. 55VS represents the latest addition in the long timeline of design, transforming a ling and lifeless street into an engaging, active frontage. The design broke the building into thirds with strong, simple detailing, extending the corner vertically to accommodate 12 storeys with a stunning visual effect. Alchemi Group collaborates closely with the architects to ensure they provide both practical and beautiful living spaces. 55VS was designed by Stiff + Trevillion, a highly reputed and multiaward-winning, London-based architectural practice. The visionaries at Alchemi also engaged .PSLAB, the award-winning design collective from Beirut to design the lighting for the interior and exterior common areas at 55VS, creating warm and intimate ambiance throughout the communal spaces. The innovative design stripped the old building back to its frame, then extended it, re-clad it with high quality brickwork, and fitted it out to create individual, high ceilinged loft-style apartments and penthouses.

“It was important to introduce a subtle New York character to the spaces by using materials and a palette that are modern but have a timeless appeal because of their quality. We also wanted to step out of the box and offer buyers something slightly different from what their used to seeing in a typical development. We stayed true to the proportions and sizes you typically get with converted industrial loft apartments in Manhattan.” 55VS was designed with elegance in mind. The new repurposed development not only re-establishes Victoria Street as a residential area, but, by using brick as the main external material, celebrates the character of the surrounding areas. The conversion is surrounded by residential brick buildings,

Most of the apartments boast private balconies and terraces. Residents can also enjoy the magically lit, communal, alfresco spaces, with lighting designed by.PSLAB. Beautifully landscaped to ensure year round appeal, these informal spaces are enhanced by a communal gathering table, water features and more private reading spaces. In the words of Laura Marino, Creative Director and Co-founder of Alchemi Group: “Outdoor space – whether private or communal – is an incredibly important part of enjoying our homes. At 55VS, we’ve taken a constrained urban site and created as much enjoyable, useable outside space as possible. In addition to the tranquil, private terraces we’ve designed two flexible communal gardens – a ground level Courtyard and an 8th floor Sky Garden. The rear garden has an element of surprise about it - a charming and inviting space to juxtapose the impressive scale of the building and bring it down to earth, welcoming people to use it easily. The Courtyard is a lush, informal setting for the whole development, offering an enthralling arrangement of “rooms” and focal points. The granite flooring of the lobby flows out into the Courtyard pocket seating areas, planted garden areas and fun space for doorstep play allow for both social gatherings and quiet privacy. The architects are well aware that first impressions matter, which is why they designed a warm and welcoming lobby that combines a boutique hotel experience with a touch of London’s own industrial edginess with ceiling heights of seven metres, oversized feature lighting and natural materials. 55VS is a celebration of a time when artisan craftsmanship was the norm; behind the development’s elegant brick and bronze façade lies luxury city living with an informal but rigorous aesthetic.Externally the top four floors are expressed as two double-height storeys to reflect the configuration on the top floor of an opulently proportioned duplex Penthouse apartment and to create grace and openness in the brick frame at the upper levels. Taking its cue from New York loft-style apartments, 55VS celebrates quality materials with character and texture, layered together to give a sense of authenticity and subtle drama to create a modern classic. The finishes and layouts throughout have been crafted to offer the very best in texture, design and style. The open plan living spaces have with five metre wide, 2.9 meter high, floor-to-ceiling windows, along with oiled oak wood plank floors in a super matte finish, designer Italian kitchens unique to 55VS and hand glazed terracotta tiles.

The emphasis on quality materials is never more apparent than in the kitchens. Always open plan to the living and dining areas, the cabinetry is sympathetic to the overall space and uses custom wood veneer, sandblasted glass, bespoke bronze handles, hand glazed terracotta lustre splashback tiles and Silestone counters. The generously proportioned bedrooms enjoy luxurious carpet in a colour-way exclusive to 55VS. The wardrobes are Italian made with sandblasted glass doors, while architectural lighting to the perimeter of the room accentuates the large windows. Elegantly finished in marble, interest is added to the bathrooms through enamelled handcut terracotta tiles; each of which, to quote the manufacturer Emery et Cie, ‘Is never quite the same as, nor totally different from, its neighbour.’ All in all, 55 Victoria Street epitomizes both elegance and homeliness. H.M.S. Belfast Raises £44,000 For Serve On SERVE-ON, a volunteer emergency response organisation that counts Bear Grylls and Joanna Lumley amongst its ambassadors, held their very first London event aboard the historic museum ship HMS Belfast on the 9th July. The event was a resounding success and raised £44,000 for SERVE ON, far exceeding our target and expectations, helping to fund the organisation harness the veterans’ (of the Armed Forces & Emergency Services) experience & values and use them to unlock the potential of young people & the long-term unemployed to serve their communities.

On the night in question, 140 guests joined members of SERVE ON’s International Response Team to help raise awareness for the initiative. Among the guests were Chartwell Estates’ Michael Christian and Francis Holmes, who stated that they were extremely happy to attend the event and to show their support for the cause, co-hosting a table in conjunction with Charles Douglas LLP & West One Bathrooms Ltd. The night began with a sunset drinks reception on deck, where the guests were able to enjoy remarkable views of the Tower of London and Tower Bridge, followed by a three-course dinner and an auction exhibiting a number of unusual lots. Our after-dinner speakers gave inspiring perspectives about the work of SERVE ON, which uses the leadership skills of those who have served in uniform to inspire and help marginalised young people realise their potential. We also welcomed Frank Gardner, International Security Correspondent for the BBC who was left paralysed after a terrorist attack in 2004. Frank gave a moving account of the power of SERVE ON to give hope to those facing enormous, and seemingly insurmountable, challenges. The money raised will enable SERVE ON to build its network of teams around the UK, which are already being piloted in Wiltshire. These teams are made up of veterans from the Armed Forces and Emergency Services and marginalised young people who were desperately in need of guidance and support. Our teams change lives as the veterans discover a chance to ‘serve on’, while the young people are given the opportunity to learn new skills, improve their job prospects, find purpose, gain confidence and form lasting friendships. These inspiring teams, comprised of volunteers of all ages, offer its members an integral sense of belonging.

Taking inspiration from the natural flora of the site, olive and holly oak trees are used extensively and punctuated by the verticality of cypresses. What made you decide upon Turkey as an extension of your UK development business?

Although Yalıkavak may be difficult to pronounce this small town is impossible to forget. Just minutes from The Jacaranda Estate, it exudes a wonderful mix of laidback local life and Mediterranean chic. Discussing The Jacaranda Estate with Adrian McCarroll of Original Vision we wanted to get the world-renowned architect’s perspective on this, his latest project. What was your first impression of the site at Jacaranda? When I first walked the land at Jacaranda I was taken aback by the quality of the view. From due north, all the way round to the south-west, the unobstructed panorama over the Aegean Sea is quite extraordinary.

And was the layout of the site a natural choice for development? It’s not often that a sloping site will offer the opportunity of clear views to all the accommodation we put on it. Through careful master planning, every villa at Jacaranda enjoys the full majesty of an Aegean sunset. Describe in a few words how the villas will look at Jacaranda? The elegance and fragility of the structure enclosing the living, dining and kitchen allows it to float above the rusticated base of the bedrooms on the level below. The finely engineered concrete and glass box sits atop locally quarried natural hewn stone, providing deep texturing and vivid contrast. As with all our work, the real quality is in the details and we pride ourselves in making sure everything fits together beautifully. How have you managed to create the indoor/ outdoor living space? Part of the inspiration behind our design was to create delicate but wide, open-ended tubes that provide shade and encourage and indoor/ outdoor way of life by harnessing the cooling land and sea breezes that prevail during the summer months. Omni Capital “Prime Time for London Property” Is London still a good bet for high-end residential property investment? Colin Sanders, CEO of leading prime real estate lender Omni Capital, offers an insider’s view.

With the debate intensifying about London property prices and whether or not they might have entered bubble territory, I’m often asked what the prospects are for investors and developers. The truthful answer is ‘mixed’, but the fact that the capital continues to offer enticing opportunities should not be in doubt. It will come as no surprise that London house prices continue to outperform the rest of the UK. According to the most recent report from the Nationwide, the average price of a London home is now over £400,000, more than twice the UK average. London prices have now risen 26 percent over the past year, creating a greaterthan-ever gap between the metropolis and the rest of the UK. The reasons behind this are generally wellunderstood, i.e. the impact of overseas investment in the capital’s property sector and the effects of supply versus demand. But can it last? With the UK population predicted to reach over 70 million by 2024 - a jump of 10 million from now - and net immigration showing little signs of receding, it’s clear where most of the newcomers will settle; as the economy continues to improve, so will demand for quality living space. It is also an indisputable fact that London continues to offer cash-rich overseas investors an unrivalled plethora of attractions: from world-class cultural and recreational facilities to superb educational institutions, a respect for the rule of law, and an envious position as a global time-hub between the US and the increasingly important financial centres of the Far East.

Yachting Industry Design With Vanessa Brady OBE I was recently invited to present the benefits of interior design and technology with Google’s Technology Glass.

It got me thinking how similar in mindset, patience and performance the owners of planes and boats are. It is true that many owners of a plane also own a boat over 60 feet in length. Curious at the boat size and statistic I decided to investigate a little more about the lifestyle of owners of large boats and what motivates a successful owner, as a designer I can use this information to improve my advice. Mainly, but not always, along the way a business owner or inventor will have experienced some life-blows. A successful person rarely enters into an agreement to purchase something they know little about. It goes against everything that success epitomises. Generally success is achieved through knowledge. It has it’s rewards and a boat seems to be a formidable benefit. Not all boat owners can be wrong so there is something more rewarding than ownership, entertaining and sailing. A small boat might be skippered by the owner, a larger boat would have an experienced crew. Whatever it is, once that sea bug bites, you are hooked. I concluded that besides the lifestyle, the command and the isolation that sailing and ownership provides, it is the competitiveness that drives ownership. It may begin by a perception of lifestyle or a goal in life from childhood but it is still a purchase by many who know little about boats and have limited knowledge of operational functionality to own a boat. These owners buy into more than the vessel, they buy into a community. Trained crews and global trusted brands provide a service second to no other industry. Each task is driven by safety and service.

Then you get on that boat...it is the one. You understand immediately. A boat has it all. This boat industry is to my mind the ultimate delivery on every level and I see exactly why owning a boat would feel like the epitome of success. So to a person like myself a designer who knows little about boat operation, I wondered what type of people boat owners might be. By finding out and creating a generic owner I can deliver a better interior. Obviously each owner’s area of expertise and taste is individual, but owning or choosing a boat is more than passion

and aesthetics. I think it’s probably along with planes one of the few areas where there is no room at all for error. A boat is engineering and performance led; it is improved by good design. I don’t just mean the basics like weather conditioned finishes, lightweight honeycombed finishes, fade and mould resistant fabrics, water repellent recliner furniture ...Changing the design of a boat is a long process and involves the performance of each product to be tested, the weight calculated and the installation tests to be signed off for sea worthiness before you can proceed with installation. It is this process that is time consuming but has no second choice. The boat by design, engineering and performance must last at peak performance for many years and perform in sometimes treacherous sea conditions, resist salty and sun fading conditions and a host of other major criteria to simply be approved for sea worthiness. Sometimes people have an expectation of success that includes the lifestyle. I have often thought how success creates beauty, you do not see ugly rich people…and you see many ugly things. But success and good advice provides a solution to almost everything. Which is why good advice is never free. It takes investment to create an idea into a deliverable product. Along the way many prototypes hit the bin and they carry a cost which is part of the cost of success. I visited the London boat show earlier this year, the Sunseeker stand was the largest and impressive in every way. I also met the agent and Broker in Cyprus for the beautiful Benetti Boats recently, both stood out for many reasons but what has stayed with me is the desire to include design in the development and delivery of their boats. Design has come a long way in recent years and these savvy brands have recognised that and invested in design led surfaces. By measuring the performance of every product that’s specified and checking on it’s performance in the field these boats have snatched a lead.

Changes and updates need to be processed, it takes time to research, each improvement and every action causes a reaction so the research and development costs are huge. Much of these steps are internal, the end user rightly would not be involved in this technical lengthy journey. The end-user buys personal indulgence by emotion, not by price. It is one of the few areas where money is not driver, the thrill is the driver. Most boat owners belong to a global community of entrepreneurial people. It is the thought that drives them to a lifestyle of excitement, control and relaxation. I’m not sure you could compare it to something as subtle as golf. Sailing is an action activity and that means a sense of adventure. As I looked into the thrill of being on a boat on the open sea, I remembered how I spent my first boat holiday with friends thirty years ago. By the time I left the tiny Estopona port I knew everyone, I liked the community spirit of boat ownership.

New boat builders have invested not just in the structure, safety and technology, and none of that is to be breezed over lightly, but in the expectations of performance by potential owners and that is fuelled by a lifestyle and social expectations of owners guests. Sometimes it’s an error that creates a multimillion pound new business. Post-it notes were created from glue that didn’t work; now we all use this successful product. Sometimes by default we learn more, in boats and in planes the first, second and third rule is safety first. It is a specialist area of which few, other than boat builders, are fully cognisant. There is no room for second class performance therefore it is becoming increasingly obvious to both boat builders and their clients that boat design not just externally but the interior can create

the difference between a sale and no sale. A beautifully designed interior, correctly selected finishes to provide high durability performance is key. Lighting is an easy to create wow factor that many builders and owners have not yet explored. It adds a new dimension to nighttime entertaining and the costs are not restrictive or excessive. Bathrooms can offer so much more than just the basics, quality performance from global brands and bespoke artisans combined create unique interiors that add to the overall pleasure and experience of life at sea. Furniture with rotating and reclining actions for drifting off into restful naps all provide new and amazing possibilities. Colour and durability, pattern and texture each provide an opportunity to personalise a boat as you would your home. Careful thought into retrofit-out ensures you can sell your boat to a waiting market creating way for you to recreate the latest customised model designed to a whole new standard of technology that currently exists in the market

Griddled South Coast Sea Bass With Provençal Vegetables And Basil Oil

Ingredients

To Serve The Dish

4 Portions of seabass (one fish weighing 3 ½ - 4 lb is perfect) 2 Red peppers roasted and skinned cut into 8 nice pieces 2 Courgettes cut in half lengthways with centre scooped out 4 Baby aubergines 8 Cherry tomatoes blanched 8 Baby artichokes prepared and cooked then cut in half Olive oil

Farce For Aubergines And Courgettes 1 Shallot finely chopped 1 Clove of garlic crushed ½ tsp herb de provence 1 Small courgette diced 2mm ½ Small aubergine diced 2 mm 1 Med flat mushroom diced 2 mm 2 Leaves of spinach washed cut into very thin strips 2 Tomatoes skinned deseeded and diced 1 Small handful of breadcrumbs Olive oil 200 g Picked basil 200 ml Vegetable oil Method 1. 2. 3. 4.

To make basil oil take the picked basil and place it into boiling salted water for 30 seconds drain it off and squeeze out as much of the water as possible Place the basil into a liquidiser with the vegetable oil and puree for 3-4 minutes The oil will take on the flavour and colour of the oil Put the puree into a fine sieve and let the oil drip through into a bowl put to one side until ready to use for the dish

Put some olive oil into a small pan add the finely chopped shallot and crushed garlic and a pinch of salt, cook with out colour until soft and sweet with the herbs de provence Add the courgette and aubergine cook until soft Add the chopped mushroom and cook until the mixture becomes dry again then add the spinach and cook until dry again Then add the diced tomato cook for 1 minute then add a little bit of bread crumbs to stiffen the mix up Put to one side Blanch the courgettes in boiling salted water, refresh and drain. Stuff with some of the farce and sprinkle with a few more bread crumbs and cut them so that you have 4 nice portions Take the baby aubergines cut them in half and place into a small frying pan with a little olive oil and salt and cook cut side down in a low oven for about 10 minutes (140oc) until soft Remove from oven leave to cool slightly and make an impression in the centre of the aubergines and stuff with the farce, once again sprinkle with a few bread crumbs put the courgettes and aubergines into an oven at 170oc and cook until golden brown keep warm

Then get a frying pan hot add olive oil, season the fish and place into the pan skin side down fry for thirty seconds and put the fish into the oven Now get another small frying pan and quickly sauté the baby artichokes then add the red peppers and then add the tomatoes put into the oven for 1-2 minutes until warm In the mean time get your serving bowls up Now take the courgettes and aubergines put them neatly onto a plate Now get the artichokes peppers and tomatoes out of the oven, put them nicely onto the plate Now remove the fish from the oven (this will of taken no more than 5 -6 minutes to cook) and season with some salt and lemon Put the fish on top of the vegetables Trickle a little bit of the basil oil around the vegetables and serve immediately

Remove legs and wings from birds Separate thigh from drum stick by cutting through joint Place thighs into a pan with some duck fat and confit slowly until soft Remove meat from thigh making sure there is no bone or lead shot and flake up Remove intestines reserving hearts and livers Cut across spine were legs have been removed and put to one side Remove crop and wish bone To make sauce put olive oil and butter into a pan when it starts to foam add the drum sticks winglets and spine bone from the bird and slowly caramelise, When bones are caramelised add the sliced shallots and garlic cook until soft Then add sliced mushrooms cook until water is cooked out of them and they start to caramelise Then drain the fat from the pan and deglaze with the port add the bones back to the pan with the thyme and fresh blackberries and boil until the bones become glazed then add the chicken stock and jus bring up to the boil and skim cook slowly for 20 minutes Pass through fine chinoise and then 4 layers of muslin cloth Put back into a pan bring up to the boil and reduce until light syrupy consistency skimming all of the time To make galette bake some potatoes until soft scoop the centres out and put to one side Sauté the livers and hearts and then chop to a smooth paste along with the confit thigh meat Mix potato into the paste meat a little at a time until you get the taste you require (it can be quite strong) season with salt and pepper, then form into 4 round discs approx. 1 cm thick set then set in the fridge When potato mix set put through flour egg and bread crumbs and put to one side For the savoy cabbage remove dark green outer leaves and discard use nice light tender green leaves removing stalk and slicing very thinly then place into boiling salted water until tender and then straight into iced water To cook dish........ Seal the grouse all over in a hot pan with olive oil and butter until golden brown then place into a hot oven(180 c)for 4-8 minutes depending upon size of bird When bird cooked rest in a warm place In the mean time cook the potato gallete in a deep fryer until golden brown and crispy ,reheat the cabbage in a little butter ,season with a little salt and pepper Place the blackberries into the sauce at the last minute just to warm through Then remove breasts from bird keep warm To assemble the dish place cabbage into the centre of the dish place galette on top of the cabbage then place grouse breasts on top of the galette (on top of the other) Place blackberries around cabbage bring sauce back up to the boil check for consistency (you may want to whisk a little bit of butter into your sauce at this point just to smooth it out and make it shine )pour sauce over and around grouse and serve

Add all ingredients into a very tall glass indeed, adding some ice that is crushed or smashed into small pieces. ‘Swizzle’ the drink with a spoon, thus diluting the drink and cooling it down. Add a ribbon of cucumber (see below), and keep adding more ice and swizzling until the glass is freezing cold, packed to the peak with ice, and the cucumber ribbon is attractively arranged inside the glass. At Cloud 23 we garnish the drink with a cucumber slice, a shiso leaf and some edible flowers, but whatever takes your fancy and is in season would be appropriate. Notes: ** Lemon sherbert is a great and traditional was of making a lemon cordial of sorts, made by rubbing the zests of lemons with coarse sugar, letting infuse until ‘sherberty’, then mixing into a liquid with the lemon juice from said lemons to taste. If you’re running out of time, Rose’s lime cordial might suffice. *** Cucumber water is a very simple way we like to jazz up tap water, and can now be found served as a welcome drink in cocktail bars all around the world. Simply ribbon a cucumber with a vegetable peeler, and mix with a jug of iced water. After a few minutes you will notice the refreshing properties of the cucumber taking hold. Exclusive Review of The Wellesley In the glamour of Knightsbridge, my sights were set on the exquisite art deco style hotel - The Wellesley.

Stepping in from London’s summer streets, the cool contemporary colonnade lobby gave a welcome embrace of sophisticated luxury. Welcomed by the General Manager and the very knowledgeable Head Concierge, it was the perfect way to start the evening ahead. As the jazz age blossomed so did the hotels decadent reputation - rooms and suites are bestowed with prominent names from the 1920s - Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Evelyn Waugh and Josephine Baker to name but a few. Fast forward, having been restored by designers Fox Linton Associates in 2012, the Wellesley is all about uncompromising service, grandeur and glamour. This is, after all, London’s first boutique-grand hotel. As our personal welcomed us to our suite for the evening, soft yellows and gold furnishing completed the green of Hyde Park’s view. The Wellesley has seven floors containing the bedroom suites, and no two are the same. As his first book, it’s very personal and Martyn revealed that it was written from his heart incorporating many personal insights to his clients’ private interiors and their decorative desires. Martyn is consistently named one of the world’s top 100 interior designers by Architectural Digest and is featured permanently in Elle Décor’s A-List 25 tastemakers in the world. He was also recipient of the highly prestigious Andrew Martin International Interior Designer of the Year Award in 2010. When asked about his favourite project, Martyn had difficulties choosing a winner: “All my projects are my favourites as I do them, like children your newest captures your heart. If I had a stand out I think it must be the projects I have done for Cher. Her homes are always like fantasies. Cher loves to live out her most exotic dreams and her homes have always reflected that. I designed an Indian themed penthouse for her that was fit for a princess, and her home in Malibu was designed to feel like a cross between a Moroccan harem and an Indonesian

From designing a number or residencies around the world, to his table top, silver and crystal launching with iconic French brands, an organic luxury mattress collection with Custom Comfort, and a new range of rugs to launch in January to add to his Rug Company collection, Martyn expects 2015 to be a quite a fun and busy year. Known mainly for his high-end residential design, he has also lent his talent to commercial and hospitality designing the Colony Palms Hotel and the Château Gursch Hotel in Switzerland as well as designing both executive offices at Warner Brothers and Paramount Studios. In 2011, Martyn published his popular book, ‘Live, Love & Decorate’, which features homes of Cher, Kid Rock, Ellen Pompeo, Ozzy and Sharon

Villa with fanciful furnishings and beautiful detailed paintwork and ceilings.” In fact Cher’s Malibu bedroom has became his favourite room that he’s designed to date, although he still admits that he tends to favour projects that he’s just finished. He can’t wait to work with Dee and Tommy Hilfiger again, after recently completing a wild 1960 beach house in Miami with them. He enjoys working with corporate clients, as they normally allow for a lot of experimentation with practicality and fresh ideas, but he finds working with private clients extremely fulfilling too, as he can really get to know them make their design fantasies a reality. Other than his design services, Martyn has a collection of indoor and outdoor fabrics, wallpaper, a popular collection of candles and furniture available through MLB Design, indoor fabrics and wallpapers for Schumacher, wood flooring for Board Broker, and a line of rugs with The Rug Company. Martyn has recently added a whole new collection to his furniture line as well as created a range of beautiful concrete, stoneware, and mirrored tiles with Ann Sacks. His brand thrives on diversity and creativity. Martyn’s latest project was the redevelopment of The Castello Saint Eurasia, set in the rolling hills of Umbria in Italy and designed for media mogul, Evegeny Lebedev. The Castello was originally in ruins but became a labour of love for both Martyn and Evgeny who both became obsessed with restoring the breath-taking 30,000 sqft 12th century castle to its former glory.

Martyn toured much of Umbria and Tuscany to study many of the areas surrounding castles for original details and regional designs. He then set about hand selecting stone floors from local quarries and sourcing 16th and 17th Century fireplaces from Belgium and finding original Italian pieces indigenous to the region. Any furnishing which Martyn was unable to find, he reproduced, using the finest original samples as a guide, mixing them with original pieces and period accessories e.g. Iron work was carefully reproduced according to 17th century Umbrian designs and hand forged by local artists to complete the restoration and retain an authentic sense of the age. Martyn has delivered quite a few projects in London over the years too, including Vidal Sasson’s swinging apartment in Notting hill, a famous fashion designer’s home in Holland Park (as well as their corporate offices and signature store), the restoration of a historic 18th century county pub and a Jimmy Choo commission store in Selfridges. He recently decorated eight private homes as part of his TV show ‘Hollywood Me last year’, with six more to come on ITV this Autumn. His favourite things to do in London includes exploring the exotic array of antiques on the King’s Road and visiting the Sir John Soane museum, where he seeks inspiration for his more wild designs. Martyn isn’t one to favour predictability. He tries to tailor every project to his client’s needs, but he does have a weak spot for some design features:

“If I had a signature moment it would be that I love Graphic colour palettes , designs and details. Black and white with bursts of unexpected colour like emerald or ruby and I like to decorate ceilings, either with a wallpaper, an aged guided leafing or a beautiful mellow paint.” His greatest inspiration is travel; new countries, cultures colours and tastes become threads in his decorative tapestry. He finds inspiration all around, in things he smells, touches, sees. AW14 Trend Alert - Seventies

As the saying goes, what comes around goes around and in fashion that old-age adage is certainly true. The New Guards of Couture: Ralph and Russo If you haven’t heard of Ralph and Russo yet, that may be all about to change. Certainly you may have seen Hollywood actress and humanitarian Angelina Jolie on the red carpet wearing their glamorous evening dresses on steady rotation, regal tailoring on HRH Sheikha Mozah of Qatar and glittering oneof-a-kind stage pieces for BeyoncÊ.

In fact, the Australian-born duo consisting of creative director Tamara Ralph and CEO Michael Russo, has steadily risen to become an exclusive and sought after luxury label since their inception in 2007 by word of mouth. In January 2014, the London based couturier was invited to show on schedule at Haute Couture week as a guest member with the likes of Christian Dior and Chanel. The first British label in almost 100 years to do so. A big thing seeing as in France, the name haute couture is trademarked and is legally controlled by the Chambre Syndicale de la Couture which was founded in 1868 for a selected few couturiers. The label haute couture can only be used by fashion houses granted designation by the French Ministry and they are reviewed annually. And they have strict guidelines: in order to become a couturier, the designer has to employ 15 full-time staff, have an atelier based in Paris and be able to put out a collection of 50 pieces every season. It is a punishing, financial obligation. “We expect savoir-faire, which is being lost, and Ralph and Russo have it”, announced Didier Grumbach, the president of the Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture. Tamara Ralph grew up in a family of designers – her great-grandmother and grandmother were couturiers and her mother was a former fashion designer. She was making fabulous gowns for prominent women in Australia and studying before moving to London where she met fellow Australian, Michael Russo in 2003. With his business acumen and Ralph’s talent, the couple launched their eponymous luxury label offering stunning, unique made-to-order cocktail dresses, bridal wear and tailoring to exclusive clientele with the deep pockets to pay for it. “We have always run a very exclusive service where we design specifically for each lady and they each have collections that were sketched especially for them – that won’t ever change as this is where the uniqueness, exclusivity and magic of what we do lies,” Tamara says. She adds: “We’ve seen an increase in the amount of young women purchasing couture over the last few years. It’s so inspiring to be able to design for women of all ages, styles and cultures. I love the fact that I could be designing an ornate couture gown for a family wedding one moment and a modern tailored jacket the next. Couture needs to enhance and support a client’s lifestyle so versatility and wearability is key.”

Until recent times, couture was seen as a non-profit marketing tool for the larger fashion houses. Fast forward to now where Chanel saw a 20% increase in sales and according to WWD, Valentino projected up to 35% growth for 2014. Ralph and Russo had an extraordinary year on year growth of 400% and joined Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg and Yahoo!’s Marissa Mayer by making Fortune magazine’s ’40 Under 40’ list in 2013.

In June 2014 they announced a “passive financial investment” by businessman and philanthropist John Caudwell for a noncontrolling, minority share in the company, taking its value to a nine-figure sum. Best known in Britain as the founder of Phones4U, billionaire Caudwell commented on his investment: “Tamara Ralph and Michael Russo have built an extremely successful luxury brand with a great reputation and endless potential. I have no doubt that my investment will continue to elevate Ralph and Russo and I’m very excited about this inspiring and rapidly growing business.”

Karl Lagerfeld once said that a Middle Eastern Chanel couture client ordered “46 Chanel couture pieces in 30 minutes” and in any given season, Russian clients have bought as many as 35 couture pieces. “Demand for couture is only increasing, particularly in Asia, Africa and the Middle East. With footprints in every country we are lucky to work with an incredible and diverse group of women from all across the world. From New York to Qatar, Paris to Hong Kong, we cater to all of our elite client’s lifestyles.” Tamara says when asked about where Ralph and Russo’s clientele derives from. With growing numbers and exquisite designs fit for a queen, Ralph and Russo have understood the zeitgeist and debuted on the Parisian stage at the perfect time.

And rapid it is, with the Middle East being a core clientele base Ralph and Russo have also seen growth in emerging markets like China, Russia, Nigeria and Brazil. With the latter holding bigger opportunities for the fashion house as Michael reports: “South America definitely holds a lot of potential, I think also Asia – for what we do – will continue to grow. Africa definitely. I think in a lot of markets like Africa, China, India – markets that were or are important source markets – we are going to witness more and more creation of wealth and ultra-high net worth individuals which will in turn drive the demand.” With the advancement of joining the syndicale came the showroom in Paris and appointment only atelier on London’s Sloane Street. Clients can have their dream dress realised, view a selection of garments to inspire and have subsequent fittings done in a luxurious and welcoming environment.

The silhouettes from the SS14 collection were reminiscent of 1940’s Hollywood – striking and dramatic with a play on volumes. Waspish waists adorned with structured bows, exquisite columns of beading, capes perched delicately atop of fitted dresses. It is couture imagined of the past. So how did the AW14/15 collection differ? “I wanted to make a statement and really play with proportions. For the Autumn Winter collection, I was inspired by the work of Massimo Listri – a man whose photographs capture incredible detail, light and such epic proportions – everything is definitely a lot more dramatic and bigger this season!” Tamara reports.

When the first gallery opened in September 2013, Shchukina was clear in her ambitions. What separates the space in Lees Place apart from so many other galleries in the capital is the pioneering approach that Shchukina has taken to interior aesthetics. The gallery is a space in which furniture, lighting, objet and sculptures are all specifically curated to create a fully immersive aesthetic experience that is unique to Gallery Elena Shchukina. Of course, the art chosen by Elena Shchukina has been another key reason why Lees Place is a must visit destination for many an art lover. Since the gallery opened its doors to the public, works by numerous talented and internationally renowned artists have been exhibited including those by; Onyeka Ibe, Allan Forsyth and Miguel Kohler-Jan. Gallery Elena Shchukina is set to impress over the next few months, with the first ever UK exhibition of Leningrad born artist Leonid Borisov (1943-2013) entitled Lessons in Geometry. The exhibition spans five decades of artistic production from the Soviet to postSoviet eras. The show features a wide range of media including painting, sculpture, collage and photography. Borisov was a contemporary artist who embraced the new western art movements and tendencies whilst remaining a deeply Russian artist rooted in traditions of the Russian avant-garde. He established himself within Soviet Nonconformist Art (1953–1986) through his articulation of the geometric aspects of the historical Russian avant-garde. Borisov rejected the trends that were prevalent amongst the artistic crowds in St. Petersburg during the 1970s and 1980s and instead looked towards the Moscow School of Conceptualism, creating abstract art which aimed to subvert and reject the Socialist Realism style of art that was prevalent in the USSR during this time. Elena Shchukina is ready to become a powerhouse in the Russian art scene. Gallery Elena Shchukina will be sponsoring the upcoming Russian Art Week from 21 – 29 November 2014. Russian Art Week is the UK’s only week-long festival of Russian art with auctions and cultural events held around London over the week. This year’s first art week saw a staggering combined total of £64m in sales at the four major auction houses. Added to this, the Borisov exhibition will be ongoing from 8 September 2014 – 16 January 2015; and from mid-September, the second gallery space at Beauchamp Place will be hosting a series of

shows entitled Born in the USSR, which is set to showcase contemporary design from 10 young emerging furniture and product designers from the former Soviet Union. From showcasing the work of artists from a variety of styles and backgrounds, to challenging the way that we perceive and appreciate art galleries, it has certainly been a busy first year for Lees Place, and it is most likely that the next 12 months will be just as eventful.

The only way to understand a scent is to smell it and that reaction is always highly individual and subjective. To perceive a scent is like a dream; it can be described to another but never experienced by anyone except by the one who experiences it initially and directly. But what makes a good perfume? Sandra states that “It’s all about the psychological feeling you want to get from a scent. How it makes the person feel and the people around them feel as well. A good perfume has a wonderful originality and an inherent quality which has to come from the raw materials used.”

Making The Transition From Summer To Autumn By the time you read this, we’re probably getting into gear for one of the most stimulating seasons of the year – autumn! I hope it’s been an active summer filled with plenty of opportunities to relax, expand and explore your world because we’re now at the start of a reversal of that process – the cooling and slowing down which precedes the chill of winter.

Autumn tends to be an incredibly busy period - it sees us return to more normalised working patterns which tend to be much more hectic. Historically, when we were more focused on agriculture as a society, autumn represented the most labour intensive season as fields were harvested and food was stored ahead of the winter months. Because of this, autumn has the propensity to be a very stressful time for a lot of people - we still have that intensity of work in our urban lives but we can take several steps to ensure that we properly nurture our minds, bodies and souls during this stressful yet stimulating season. This season urges us to turn inwards and focus on those parts of life that anchor us – putting our work, family or home in order. Emotionally, it is important for us to get our houses in order too as excess negative baggage is more likely to affect our health over the challenging six months to come. We can increase our wellbeing by dealing with our emotional baggage, slowing down (one of the greatest challenges of the season) and building a quiet internal foundation that truly supports our lives.

Admittedly, autumn does not provide as good an opportunity for taking up meditation as the summer months that precede it. During summer, we tend to find ourselves with more free time, which allows for excellent opportunities to practice meditation. This free time becomes scarce during the autumn months and so finding a chance to meditate can be a difficult task. However, one important thing that autumn represents is the return of routine and those with children will recognise the welcome structured days. With children returning to school, many find autumn an ideal time to get back up to speed with work. This extra structure can provide a great chance to establish some time for meditation as part of our daily routines. Meditation can include anything from deep breathing, to short, silent walks or simply concerted periods of personal reflection. Setting time aside for meditation is of great importance as autumn is a season when many can fall into a state of melancholy or grief as the skies turn greyer and the sunshine begins to retreat. Meditation offers an excellent way to take care of our mental and spiritual well-being in this gloomy time.

Becoming organised is one of the key attributes that will help you get through autumn with ease. You may find it harder to get up in the morning when it’s still dark and the prospect of an evening at home will be more appealing as the nights get colder. It’s important to create a warm, secure and nurturing home by, • Clearing and replacing items you do not absolutely love. • Repairing maintenance problems like drafts from windows and doors, dripping taps etc. • Remove dead plants, landscape the garden and make your front door attractive.

Although it’s tempting to continue eating summer vegetables and fruit, available in supermarkets, it is advisable to steer clear of these, as they will be well past their best. Instead, switch to fresh autumn foods as soon as possible to keep your body at an optimum nutritional level. Try to eat fresh figs, pears, turnips, swedes, parsnips, brussel sprouts, onions, garlic, walnuts, chestnuts, sweet potatoes, apples and pumpkins. These foods are high in anti-oxidants, fibre and good fats and will help fight infections and bacteria.

Exercise, Exercise, Exercise

Remember that as this season is marked by dryness, which is further compounded by us moving on to artificial sources of heating at home, work or in the car; you will need to increase your fluid intake. A great way to do this is by eating more soup made from seasonal vegetables and essential fats to remain well lubricated both inside and out. Also, while baking and roasting foods intensifies flavours, these cooking methods draw water out of the foods, so again try to balance this by drinking lots of fluids.

Meditation, through its breathing techniques and positive visualisations, can also help to clear the difficulties we inevitably experience from living in this world. Autumns’ limiting energy forces all aspects of life to become strictly defined and I don’t think its any coincidence that the school year starts in at this time. Here are a few tips that help develop emotional health:

Practice visualising a strong mental image of who you are or would like to be and focus on it whenever you hit a setback or feel low – it will become an instant source of comfort and inspiration. Become more flexible in your thinking to limit struggles and conflict in life. Try to build mental stamina by exercising emotional strength and you’ll grow more self-reliant and less vulnerable to emotional injury. Like all muscles – if you don’t use it, you’ll lose it. Ward off depression with a daily dose of gratitude – think about what lights up your day and life every evening before you go to sleep.

Yet again I’ll get on my soap box about exercise - not only does it encourage and promote deep breathing to release stress and toxic materials from the body like carbon dioxide; by now you should all know that it helps to keep you lean, fit, and increases your sense of well-being. Cells in the body receive extra oxygen when you exercise, so you should feel less fatigued. However, take care not to exercise in polluted areas as you will be inhaling more toxic material into the body; the lungs, like all muscles, need movement or they begin to loose elasticity. Singing, dancing and walking as well as jogging, swimming and aerobic classes all help to increase oxygen intake. When stressed our breathing becomes more shallow, using only a small amount of our lung capacity, which in turn leaves residues of this toxic gas in the bloodstream – some practitioners believe this creates fatigue.

Below is their guide to creating the perfect gun room: Size The size of a gun room depends on how many guns you have and whether you want to invite guests into the room. A practical gun room for eight to twelve guns need be no more than 10m² (108 sq ft) but bear in mind the additional space you will need for guest guns and ammunition. If possible, cater for the largest number of guests you will have on shoot days. If you are happy to invite guests into your gun room and you are keen to include an adjoining drying area and boot room with room for clothing and ear protectors, for example, then an area of 40m² (430 sq ft) is not extravagant.

Gun Cabinets Apart from the number and specific dimensions of your guns, the design of your gun cabinets will be determined by whether you prefer to store them horizontally or vertically. You will also need to decide if you would like glazed or panelled upper and lower cabinets and if you would like the design to include drawers for ammunition or archives, for example. Halstock can suggest a variety of styles and designs for bespoke cabinets which will hold each gun safely and securely while also displaying them to best advantage. A wide choice of different woods and other materials can be used and matching panelling, shelving and drinks cabinets can also be created. There is also the option to include marquetry as well as many other design details into the cabinets. Other essentials: Apart from cabinets in which your guns, gun cases and ammunition can be stored, the following items are invaluable: • A central table on which guns can be laid • A desk on which game books and records can be filled out or kept • A cleaning area if you do not have an adjoining boot room, where rods and other cleaning equipment and materials can be kept within the gun room. • A drying area. Lighting Most people like to have concealed lighting inside their cabinets to showcase their guns, in which case it is particularly important to use the latest LED lighting which emits low levels of heat.

 Temperature and humidity A gun room should never be allowed to get too cold or too warm. Unusually low or high levels of humidity can harm some guns and corrosion can also be a problem, so the appropriate controls need to be put in place.

Decoration and furniture How you would like to furnish your gun room, or the reception of a Hunting Hall, is a matter of personal taste but among the things you might want to consider are: • A refectory table and chairs • Shelving for books, archives and gun provenance records • Lamp tables • Club chairs and possibly a sofa • Window shutters (essential for security) • Trophy display cabinets • Panelling • A framed map of the area (or a marquetry equivalent created by Halstock) illustrating shoot drives • Paintings • A drinks cabinet and humidor • A servery, ideally with a sink, oven, fridge and warmer Security Security must be compliant with all local constabulary and Home Office regulations. Consider the use of CCTV. Your local Police Authority should be able to give you specific advice on the door providing access to the gun room and additional security on the gun cabinets themselves as well as any drawers in which ammunition is kept. Rifles require additional security – over and above shotguns. Guns can be difficult to remove quickly in the event of a fire so it always makes sense to fit an efficient alarm and fire protection system.

In Love With Death Death is a topic that does not often crop up in casual conversation; in fact we’re more likely to go out of our way to avoid talking about it. The authentic Scandinavian dining pods will serve up hearty portions of King Crab – washed down with Krug Grande Cuvee. As well as both brands having a strong quality ethos, there is also a shared voluntee of Krug & Beast to tell the story behind their products: Krug has introduced a Krug ID on the back label of every bottle that leaves their cellars and the crab producer of Beast is working on a similar project to share information about the crab including exactly when and where it was caught. The Beast was created by the founders of Burger & Lobster – where there are only three menu choices, each costing £20. Beast is a more decedent offering, set in the basement of a former Marylebone chapel there is just one option at £75 per head, plus drinks.

Down into the Beast basement and we are greeted by our dinner … the king crabs are bobbing around in their water tanks whilst the wedges of steak are aging in an adjacent fridge. Beast sets itself apart from other eateries at a similar price point - diners share communal candelabra lit tables and hand carved benches. During our visit to Beast the dining hall is by majority male dominated – after we are served our man-sized portions it is easy to see why. Starters is a whole parmesan wheel – filled with parmesan chunks served with olives and pickled accompaniments. What’s about to follow to serve two people is enough to feed a small country … for weeks, what is even more jaw dropping is the quality of the food is superb – quality and quantity. The 800g Nebraskan steak (to share) has been expertly chargrilled on the custom built kitchen equipment, which was followed by half a king crab and half a dozen side dishes. We are feeling full simply by just looking at the table, our personable Californian waitress advises us on the provenance of each of our courses and offers to tie our bibs ready for the beast feast. A Whine About Language Lively hints of raisin. Subtle tones of sweet cherry. Luscious notes of over-ripe fig. An enigmatic whisper of compost? The rich armory of the English language is unleashed with reckless abandon when we talk of wine. From the simple simile to the dizzying heights of the absurd achieved by the mixed metaphor, “wine-talk” and it’s peculiarities has developed a style all of its own. Its esoteric nature and the inevitable dash of pretension have made such talk amusing to the very people that it is often intended to be guiding-those of us who are neither actual nor aspirational wine critics.

There is a formula at work here, take your exotic adjective, add to a whimsical noun and top with your odor of choice. Fresh details of lemongrass. See? It’s easy. I wonder how often the creation of a novel example of the formula is more important than it’s applicability to the wine itself? Maybe I’m being cynical but I’m detecting that faint whisper of compost again. Who hasn’t laughed at an especially florid description found on the back of a bottle? Who can deny the entertainment derived from watching television wine critics indulging in a lyrical arms race, one-upping each other with comparisons to obscure fruits, then bringing out the big guns by comparing a sauvignon blanc to the sensation of leaping naked into a gooseberry bush? Who has actually thrown themselves naked into gooseberry bush to make an accurate comparison? You’d probably enjoy a nice glass of sauvignon after such an experience. Words are the versatile tools that we use to convey an experience and their effectiveness in this endeavour can be very subjective. “Full of blackcurrant jaminess” may paint a provocative image of the sensation from a nice, full syrah, but also perfectly describes a jar of blackcurrant jam. If beauty is truth, it should be considered that beauty is often firmly in the eye, or palette, of the beholder.

I love to talk about wine, I love to share wine with my friends and family. I remember when I was younger my family would compete to guess the flavours given by the tasting notes on the back of a bottle of wine. Sharing a bottle of wine is a unifying experience, and discussing the wine is a part of that. The image of family and friends enjoying wine seems a long way from that of the excessive analysis typified by wine critics, but there is a happy medium. We should not feel unable to express our appreciation of wine if we do not simultaneously feel the need to also reach for our thesaurus. The act of critiquing in its very nature develops a jargon indecipherable to the layman. But wine talk has the added alienating effect of being based around a simple pursuit that many of us enjoy and ultimately boils down to - do you like what you are drinking and what does it taste of? Often answering these questions of a wine in a restaurant is treated as an ordeal by a reluctant diner who feels under a spotlight, the entire weight of critical pretense staring at them with disdain-we all see through you peasant! Your lack of fruity metaphors betrays your lack of breeding! This is perhaps the point. Wine was historically in the United Kingdom a drink of the privileged and remnants of that heritage have endured. Language has kept a form of that elitism alive, showcasing the sophistication and eloquence of the informed appreciator of a fine wine. One can understand the intimidation that this imparts on the uninitiated. And it is here where we should return to the simplicity of the issuedo you like what you are drinking and what does it taste of? Wine, like all the good things in life, can be often be appreciated perfectly well without the affectations that we have evolved. Enjoy your wine. Feel free to enjoy with others and discuss it without a need to play top trumps with your vocabularies. And most of all-stay away from my gooseberry bushes. London Skyline It’s no wonder, when one looks at his rich contribution to the London skyline, that Sir Christopher Wren is often regarded as England’s greatest ever architect.

Wren’s greatest and most prolific period was from 1665, just before the Great Fire of London, to 1710, when aged almost 80, his work-rate began to understandably slow. In 1666, the Great Fire of London brought an end to many lives, and devastated the architectural heritage of the previous several hundred years; however, it may also be seen as the beginning of London as we know it today. What was burnt down needed to be rebuilt, and Wren figured heavily in both re-imagining and reconstructing the great city. Wren had spent some time in Paris studying architecture and sculpture prior to the fire, and already started preliminary drawings for St Paul’s Cathedral in 1665, giving him a fortunate

head start on this, the most noteworthy of the 52 churches he was eventually commissioned to rebuild. In fact, the drawings of St Paul’s were presented to the King Charles II just weeks before the Great Fire took hold, the tragedy providing the imperative and the impetus to start these and many other large scale building works. Although Wren’s plan for the great rebuild wasn’t accepted by Charles as it was submitted, he was esteemed enough by the king to allow sufficient leeway for the architect to produce some of the finest buildings in Europe. By the time of Wren’s death in 1723, the London skyline had started to very much resemble the one we see today (with some obvious exceptions); nowadays, thanks to his enduring legacy, the city he built boasts some of the most historically valued buildings in the world. There are few cities in the world that offer not only this historical magnificence, but also the technology on which 21st century living depends, plenty of opportunity for high-end retail therapy, and of course, the all-important generous financial breaks and reputation as a safe-haven. London has it all.

The number of nationalities descending on the London property market has recently risen from 43 to 52, with investors from the Asian market now at the fore; Singapore, Hong Kong, China, and Malaysia are also joined by buyers from Russia, with all the signs suggesting that the ranks will soon be joined by Indonesia, India and Turkey. These drivers of wealth demand the white heat of design and quality, both of which are constantly heralded in London’s finest areas. A Billionaire’s Portfolio According to the Wealth X and UBS Billionaires Census there are now 2,170 billionaires across the globe, with an individual net worth of $3 billion (£1.8 billion). According to the study, a typical billionaire’s portfolio comprises 42% private holdings (£774 million), 35% public stock (£650 million), 18% liquid assets (£332 million), 3% real estate (£47 million) and 2% luxury assets (£35 million).

On average, a billionaire owns four ultra prime properties, each worth £12 million. The Beauchamp Estates ultra prime market barometer reports on trends in the ultra prime residential markets in which they operate, as well as bringing together key indicators on other parts of a billionaire’s typical portfolio. Along with interviews with local agents who are active in the various locations, we have also compiled a database of available supply of ultra prime properties across each of the markets to identify the profile of what makes an ultra prime property. Our analysis looks at available properties within the following price thresholds in each location: Tuscany between €10 million and €30 million (£8.3 million and £25 million), French Riviera between €18 million and €30 million (£15 million and £25 million), Mykonos over €3 million (£2.5 million) and St John’s Wood and Mayfair over £10 million (€12 million).

What is an ultra prime property? For those searching for ultra prime property location is paramount, closely followed by the size of accommodation on offer, and the provision of outside space. Perhaps surprisingly, few are purchased as primary residences. In Mayfair, ultra prime property often forms part of a wider investment portfolio, whilst the stunning surroundings around Tuscany and Mykonos offer ideal locations for ultra prime holiday retreats. For the largest properties head to Tuscany, where the average property is 17,508 sq ft compared to 6,280 and 8,348 sq ft across Mayfair and St John’s Wood respectively. For this you can expect 12 bedrooms, 10 bathrooms and 5 reception rooms plus, on average, 71.4 hectares of land. Over 20% of ultra prime properties in Tuscany also benefit from their own vineyard and/or olive groves. On average, an ultra prime property in this region will cost you €14.6 million (£12.1 million). The most expensive ultra prime properties currently available are within Mayfair and St John’s Wood, with an average asking price of £21.7 million and £22.3 million (€26 million and €26.7 million) respectively. The French Riviera holds third position at €22.4 million (£18.6 million). Whilst London offers a mix of property types, including period, restored, apartments and elegant detached and town houses, 89% of ultra prime properties available across the French Riviera are stunning modern conversions and over 60% include additional living accommodation. With at least one swimming pool, gyms and Jacuzzis are also popular, all located on estates of around 0.7 hectares. Similarly, in Mykonos pools are guaranteed, whilst a sea view adds to appeal. In by far the smallest of our ultra prime properties at 3,392 sq ft, 6 bedrooms, 6 bathrooms and 3 receptions are all to be expected for an average price of €5 million (£4.15 million). By law, a super plus €5 million property in the Greek islands occupies a minimum 0.4 hectares of land and has at least 4,900 sq ft, although often much more.

Chinese Investors In London In recent years, Chinese investors have played very active roles in the real estate markets all over the world. In the first half of 2014, a huge amount of capital from mainland China was invested into London because of the government’s attractive investment policies. London is now one of the worlds most popular destinations for Chinese real estate investors.

According to statistics, China’s overseas investment in real estate has increased 17% in the first half of 2014, reaching 3.2 billion pounds. Investment in commercial property made up nearly 2.4 billion pounds of the total spent. However it is the growth in residential investment sites that is more startling, investments soared 84% on last year, reaching 897 million pounds. The profile of Chinese investors in London is diverse. Through London property agency Celestial Globe, I sat down to interview Ms Pan Ying, to hear about her investment story in London. From Beijing to London CBD CBD Ms. Pan Ying and her husband started their real estate related business in Beijing 20 years ago. With a combination of excellent foresight and courage, Ms. Ying purchased a number of properties in Beijing’s prestigious Central Business District. Ms. Ying went on to successfully sublet her properties to companies and firms. Her first pot of gold. Ms. Pan Ying’s family began their life in Britain after her son’s short-term tour to the UK a few years ago. The tour was organized by her son’s school, a group of Chinese Children studied in UK and lived with host families for a short-term. Ms Ying’s son loved the British teaching method, the beautiful environment and the hospitality of his hosts home. After his return to Beijing, he informed his parents, ‘I want to study in UK’.

After that, Ms Ying made few overseas journeys around Europe with her close family and friends. Of all the countries she visited she was quick to recognise that it was London that she enjoyed the most. Mrs Ying fell in love with the cities modern and stylish feel as well as the historical and cultural heritage that makes London unique. When she found a modern apartment in Canary Wharf she immediately realized that she had found what she had been looking for. “Canary Wharf makes me feel like going back to Beijing’s CBD, similar business centre, modern buildings, professional’s working environment, everything is familiar to me.” Ms. Pan Ying’s son is now studying at a prestigious boarding school in London, Ms Ying and her husband have now made the move permanently to UK and continue to invest in the London real estate market. Andermatt Billionaire businessman Samih Sawiris has taken Swiss village Andermatt, a former military base, under his wing to transform into the ultimate all year round mountain destination. Andermatt is now in its 8th year of regeneration. Developments within the Alpine town have so far included a deluxe 5 star hotel (The Chedi Andermatt) and an 18-hole PGA standard gold course. Situated just under 2 hours outside of Zurich, locals are seeing the reawakening of this once sleepy town.

As well as being a ski destination, Andermatt have significantly invested in year round facilities, most prominently the 18-hole golf course, which has caught the interest of golfers internationally. The course spans 130 hectares and is set in picturesque surroundings, with 360 degree mountain views and the faint rattle of cow bells in the distance it is easy to see the appeal. Other summer season activities include fishing in the trout lakes, hiking, mountain biking or for the less active Andermatt offers horse drawn carriage rides. Sawiris has also placed emphasis on the importance of investing in the local economy, encouraging tourists to eat and shop locally. Thus, The Chedi only has one restaurant and shop, ensuring that guests visit the local town – there are some excellent fondue restaurants in town and a great selection of local bars. Investment prices vary start at CHF 455,000 for a studio and CHF 3,500,000 for a bespoke chalet.

The alpine town is carefully being developed in stages, to avoid rapid growth in the town and to financially balance the books. To date over CHF 400 million has been invested, with a total expected cost to be in the region of CHF 1.8 billion. Once completed Andermatt will consist of 6 hotels, circa 25 chalets, 42 apartments buildings and an upgrade of ski slopes and train connections. Sawiris has worked carefully with the local community (there are approximately 1,600 residents) to formulate a plan to maintain the charm and authenticity of this traditional mountain village. There is a multitude of investment opportunities arising in Andermatt. These include residences within The Chedi, which can be rented back by the hotel, to apartments and stand alone chalets. Interestingly for investors once the agreed number of chalets and apartments as planned are built, stipulations are in place to ensure that the authorities will never allow planning for further residential development. As the number of completed residential buildings increases there are plans for subsequent leisure facilities such as concert halls, swimming pools and ice rinks. Further attractive selling points for Andermatt include that of the project being exempt from “Lex Koller” – a Swiss law preventing non-residents purchasing land. Furthermore, all holiday apartments for sale within Andermatt are exempt from the Swiss Second Home Law, which places limits allowing only 20% of residences within a village to be sold as holiday homes.

Bentley Mulsanne The Bentley Mulsanne is a fine blend of the classic components of a Bentley and modern luxury expected in a vehicle of such calibre. We take a seat behind the wheel of Bentley’s flagship motor and take it on a tour of the UK’s most scenic areas.

The Mulsanne is undoubtedly a huge car, perhaps slightly daunting when if you are not used to driving a limousine. Before we are overwhelmed with an urge to jump in the back, turn on the massaging seats and draw the electric curtains, we realise being in the front seat would be even more pleasurable. The interior is timeless, expensive leather, blindingly shiny veneers and thick pile carpets. The centre console is a hub of gadgets – you really need to sit down and read the user guide before pressing ‘go’. In addition to the 8 inch screen, which can be neatly hidden there are climate control pads, numerous vents Though

for a starting price tag of £228,000 you would expect the finest in technology. What’s more, it is estimated that 170 man hours are used in the construction of the interior alone. The spec is endless and our model includes a £8,000 optional extra – an electric fronted champagne cooler, surprisingly the flying ‘B’ is also an option. Back to the rear and there are private-jet style electronic picnic tables below the in-built televisions, within the tables are iPad holders – complete with connective chargers – making it easier to work on the go. The Mulsanne also has an internal wi-fi system making it highly practical for todays businessperson. Car enthusiasts will love the purr of the 6.75 litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine, the Mulsanne gently glides along the road. With a gentle touch of the accelerator you could go over national speed limits effortlessly, though the Mulsanne is not a car you want to go full speed in as the ride is so enjoyable. It turns heads without needing to be revved to maximum capacity. We test the Mulsanne on motorways, where it peaks around 20mpg, the ride is made more enjoyable by the light massage given to us by the drivers seat. Surprisingly it is just as straight forward to drive on country roads, as we delved through the towns of Bath and Oxford. The corners of the bonnet are easily identifiable and the flying ‘B’ is a great guide for the front of the bonnet. Parking however is another matter, when the Mulsanne occupies over one and a half spaces. During our Bentley adventure we stayed at the renowned Bath Priory, a beautiful 5 star spa and boutique hotel in the heart of Bath town centre. What is a typical day like for you? Well, no two days are ever alike. I like to start early and receive an update from the Night Concierges and then prepare and brief my team on all arrivals, departures and anything else for the day. I then try and clear all e-mails and admin work so I can then focus on the guests, my team and of course get stuck into creating bespoke experiences. How did you get in to the concierge business? I moved to London 15 years ago for the love of a woman and needed to get a job fast. I started working as a luggage porter and just fell in love with the fact that the team I was working in was making people’s holidays so special and memorable. I remember dealing with people who had never visited London and telling them all about these wonderful attractions that I hadn’t yet visited myself! What, in your opinion, are the “must-have” characteristics to be a good concierge? I believe the most important thing is the knack to anticipate from a short conversation what a guest will enjoy and making sure that you exceed that expectation. When recommending a restaurant it is so important that my team and I send the guest to a place that they will love and not just a place because it is on trend or well known at the time. What are some examples of the luxury services and bespoke experiences offered? They are literally limitless. From meeting a Michelin starred chef at a market in the morning to be taken shopping for produce to then be shown and taught how to cook it for your lunch is one that stands out. Also we offer a lovely romantic picnic experience which involves a horse ride around Hyde Park and then the guests are met by one of my team at a place of their choice with a custom picnic all delivered on a bicycle. We have even sent over extra Champagne after we set up for one family by the Henry Moore sculpture on a particularly balmy summers evening.

I believe London is the greatest city on earth and feel it’s my job to create fantastic lasting memories for our guests.

What has been one of the most unique things that someone/a guest has asked you to help with? I once assisted a guest in making his own perfume which itself is not unusual. The strange thing was that he had purchased many rather expensive bottles and then asked that all of my team members use the perfume so we smelt the same for the duration of his stay. We politely declined. I also remember a lovely lady wanted me to re-create a piece of art she had seen which was basically a sock tree to give as a gift to her father. We spent close to £3000 on socks and bought some wire and small clips and made a rather grand looking sock tree. What are some of the more unusual requests that you’ve fulfilled? There really are hundreds. I have arranged a children’s party to include people dressed as Dinosaurs and fairies for twin brother and sisters and the theme was actually “One Direction”. I have had team members fly abroad to deliver personal possessions to guests. I have had a sculpture repaired after a guest broke his father’s treasured (and very expensive) art piece during a little soiree. I have arranged dog walking and day spas for a guest’s dog. I have even arranged a full weeks health break including dietician, dermatologist etc only to have on the last day of their stay for the guest to order a pizza. I once had a guest explain to me that he always dreamt of going to the Cannes film festival to party on a yacht. It happened that we managed to get him a full party plan together including an invite to the Moet yacht party.

How do you keep up-to date with everything that is going on with London, do you have a special score? eg: how do you know about new shops, cafes, bars etc. Reading everything you can get your hands on is a good start and also Twitter is surprisingly useful. Of course, being a Concierge in one of the most prestigious hotels in London comes with many benefits. Whenever something new, big, fancy or different is opening it is very common for the promoters, managers etc to come to me to explain the concept. I also have many friends who are top Concierges and we regularly meet up and all we seem to talk about is new restaurants and attractions. There is always a bit of friendly competition to see who really is the man in the know. I also think it is super important to go out and experience new things first hand and I love nothing more than discovering a new restaurant, bar, show or café with my lovely girlfriend. Best place in London for Afternoon tea? I love the Orangery in Hyde Park as it is a little different and a really relaxed space. Best place in London for a Roast Dinner? I personally love the Rib Room in Knightsbridge as not only is the beef amazing but also they do excellent roast potatoes just the way I like them, crispy on the outside but nice and fluffy inside. At Grosvenor House Apartments, I once was lucky enough to try one of our Chef’s whole cooked lambs and the mouth-watering taste is still there when I think about it - simply amazing and something a little different from the norm.

What do you recommend guests in London do while they’re here?

What is the most rewarding thing about your job?

Again, this all depends on the person and the amount of time they have. There is however a few must-see places that everyone should experience. Borough Market on Friday is foodie heaven for me with a diverse range of foods from all over and in true London fashion just as diverse people.

That has to be when a guest is a regular traveller to London and feels that they have seen it all but comes to me to say thank you for opening their eyes to a new experience and making their trip so special. It is also extra special when children draw pictures and write thank you notes to us at the desk which happens often but always puts a huge smile on my face. I see guests leave with a sense of loss that there holiday is over and then I know that the team has done a great job.

Starlight Charity In the luxury-lifestyle sector in which we are immersed, it is easy to lose perspective and sight of the ‘important’ things in life. Whilst we are sat at our desks deliberating over which holiday to book or which restaurant we will be sitting at next Thursday night, there are some children who make it their final wish to enjoy one of these once in a life time opportunities.

Actress Emma Samms and her cousin Peter Samualson founded Starlight in 1986. Starlight makes it possible for terminally ill children or children with life shortening illnesses to make a wish. Wishes vary from wanting to meet a celebrity to watching the Formula 1 in Monaco. Emma’s inspiration for Starlight came after her brother Jamie was diagnosed with aplasticanaemia as a child, unfortunately an incurable disease. Emma went through the heartbreak of regularly being away from home and separated from her siblings. It is understandably distressing for the siblings and parents of the unwell child to be a part and for that reason Starlight always includes the whole family within the wish to make them a part of the happy memory. In her late teens, long after Emma’s brother Jamie had passed away, she met a young boy named Sean on a visit to Great Ormond Street. They quickly bonded, though sadly he wasn’t given a long life expectancy following an operation. In passing Sean told Emma he had always dreamed of going to Disneyland and Emma made it her ambition to make this a reality. Not only was the excitement on Sean’s face enough to make Emma’s efforts worthwhile, but it was also the joy it gave his mother. For many families of terminally ill children life becomes consumed by hospital appointments and operations, however the wish is a happy memory for the whole family. After Sean and Emma’s trip to Disneyland Starlight was born and it its’ first year granted

4 wishes. Today Starlight is working on over 1,200 wishes at any one time. In addition to the wishes Starlight also provides entertainment to over half a million children in hospitals via fun centres, pantomimes and days out. Starlight now raises millions of pounds each year and has ambitions to grant even more wishes and help as many ill children as possible. Starlight receives no government or national lottery funding so all monies raised is through donations. Most of Starlight’s donations are given by the general public; the charity also has a number of generous corporate supporters, trusts, foundations and legacies. From 1 September until 12 October 2014 The Parisian palace infused by art and culture introduces a temporary Dom Pérignon Suite for guests to embark on a two day journey while experiencing the newly created ‘Rosé Paradox’ menu at La Cuisine, the hotel’s Michelin starred restaurant, followed by a trip to Champagne during the harvest. The ‘Rosé Paradox’ menu has been developed during a workshop attended by 9 chefs from across the world. Each course emphasizes the extremely complex bouquet of Rosé Vintage 2003, with notes of ripe fruit, fig, violet and vanilla and a silky, spicy material which gradually disappears into a salty and mineral finish. The chefs creations boast: salmon salad and rabbit with hazelnut butter, Hamachi ceviche, rhubarb and crispy scallops, Quenelles on a skewer with black truffles and lobster sauce, green pea Vichyssoise, carbonara with duck breast and cocoa fig sauce and fresh strawberries, figs, guava, blackcurrant with vanilla and violet.

Girl Power, It’s Nothing New...

Feeling the need to maintain my exercise, as I no longer pursued a dancing career, I was told about a local Wing Chun class. I had never heard of it! So I looked into it and discovered a Chinese martial art created by a nun over 500 years ago! Her name was Ng Mui.

Said Linda Hall, explaining her lifestyle and why she is passionate about children’s fitness, wellbeing and fun. From the age of 3, Linda started to learn the art of dance - ballet, tap and modern. Health and fitness have always been an important part of her lifestyle. Having pursued a successful music career, she finally came back to her passion for fitness, qualifying as an instructor teaching Pilates, circuit training, aqua aerobics, pre- and post- natal classes.

“Wing Chun is a form of close range combat fighting developed by a woman ... that definitely interested me!,” continued Linda.

Linda is currently in development on a TV project with award winning production company Mediadante - based in the Middle East with a history of sports focused programming.

Having found the right teacher in Sifu Leung Guo-Qiang, Linda began to feel the passion for Wing Chun. It is said to channel energy so that you ‘flow’. The delicate but natural movements require little force, whilst still being capable of blocking your opponent effectively. As well as being a teacher in London, Sifu Leung was also the director of the Red Boat Chinese Opera travelling around South China. He performs his skills in the martial art of Kung Fu, taught to him from the age of eight by his grandfather. With an opportunity for Linda to train in Hong Kong, Sifu introduced her to “Opera House Wing Chun”. Although there were many challenges, it was a perfect fit for Linda’s talent. She went on to win gold medals in martial art championships in both 2001 and 2002. The experience gave Linda new confidence and when, in 2005, she was asked to teach children - a new experience - she jumped at the chance. Linda aced the first lesson, and her love of teaching children grew from there. Linda’s talent with music, dance and fitness came together in these classes. Her skills and passions were now in one place, and ‘Animal Fu’ was born. Linda explained: “I want children to see fitness as fun ... Animal Fu certainly ticks all the boxes.” Animal Fu is Linda’s own creation of Kung Fu with specially written songs for pre-school and infants. The Animal Fu characters are helping young children to become inspired and motivated, teaching them to respect their bodies and see fitness as a positive lifestyle choice. Linda is currently developing the Animal Fu DVD for young children. Her classes have been a big hit in primary schools, which has led her to training the teachers and assistants to use Animal Fu as part of their physical education classes. Whilst the history of Wing Chun is a mixture of fact and legend, there is no mystery about the success of Animal Fu.

2014 also saw the introduction of China day at Guards Polo Club. Held on 18th June, Mr Yida Zhang and the Yida International Investment Group were welcomed for their first polo event. Whilst the UK polo season is drawing to a close it continues across the world, with Austrailia and Dubai being key winter sun destinations to be followed by winter polo season in Europe’s finest ski resorts. In recent years Guards launched their Polo Academy at Coworth Park, part of the prestigious Dorchester collection. Former England Captain Andrew Hine supports the learning programs at Coworth Park. After learning that Bob Bob Ricard spent circa £3m on their basement ‘Club Room’ refurbishment I decided a visit was on the cards. Plush, intimate booths fill the lower ground room, which you enter via a 70’s style dance floor. The menu was varied and whilst portions were on the small side there was a good selection of dishes on offer, with specially marked classic Russian options on the menu. Russia meets Asia in Mayfair I am eager to visit Novikov’s Asian side, after a fantastic meal in their Italian side – also located within the Berkeley Street premises…. Just a stones throw from Mr Chartwell’s Mayfair office. The atmosphere is buzzing and I take a tour through their indoor market – yes really. The market is stocked with ripe, juicy looking fruit, vegetables and fresh fish laid on ice. The menu is vast and comprises of Pan Asian and Chinese. Being indecisive and overwhelmed by choice I left my dinner in the capable hands of my waitress. I especially enjoyed the sushi and eel. Lady Chartwell makes a Royal Appointment at The Goring, London 8/10 A firm favourite with ladies in the Royal family, Lady Chartwell pays a visit to The Goring Hotel. A stones throw from Buckingham Palace and with long standing links with the Royal Family, The Goring proudly hosted The Duchess of Cambridge and family on the eve of her wedding to Prince William. The Goring has an overwhelming warmth to it – with hospitality being at the core of its’ values. To this date it remains the only family owned and run five star hotel in Central London, and is now in the one hundred and fourth year of ownership with the same family. The relationship to the British Monarchy is cemented through to the interior in The Dining Room which has been designed by Viscount Linley.The Goring is a Quintessentially British institution and which is embraced from the décor to the fine British produce used on the menu.

The Goring Dining Room exudes a quiet ambiance and the diners are mainly of a mature generation. I imagine this is a favourite with Americans and Europeans looking for a truly British dining experience. Lady Chartwell enjoyed the Chilled English pea soup with Dorset Crab – refreshing and elegantly presented. Lady Chartwell was also fortunate enough to sample ‘Eggs Drumkilbo’ (a renowned favourite of the Queen’s Mother). This was followed by two ‘trolley’ courses – tender Beef Wellington and a selection of British Cheeses. The Beef was cooked to perfection and encased with a delicate golden crust. Johnnie Walker Gentleman’s Wager Launch At The Venice Film Festival Jude Law, Giancarlo Giannini, Jake Scott & Sienna Guillory attended the Johnnie Walker Blue Label evening drinks reception to celebrate ‘The Gentleman’s Wager’ during Venice Film Festival. Guests attended a private screening of the short film followed by a press conference and then celebrated with the stars on the stunning terrace at the Westin Europa & Regina hotel on the Grand Canal.


Launch of Johnnie Walker Gold Label Reserve and Rankin’s collaboration at Venice Film Festival Present on the night were a host of glamorous, hand-selected Rising Stars from across Europe, including Game of Thrones star Gwendoline Christie from Great Britain, Blanca Suarez from Spain and Marie Nasemann from Germany. All were in attendance at the Westin Europa and Regina to see an exclusive exhibition showcasing iconic Rankin photography where, for one night only, the display celebrated legendary moments of both yesterday and today’s talent from the world of film as Johnnie Walker’s European search for a rising star began. Other attendees on the night included Paolo Stella and Eleonora Carisi from Italy, Manos Gavras from Greece and Bejna Bruijning from Benelux.


Workspaces

Francois Champsaur Francois Champsaur is a French interior designer. Born in Marsaille his work is influenced by his Mediterranean roots. He decided very earl on to study at the Ecole de Beaux-Arts before joining the Ecole nationale des Arts Decoratifs and in 1996, starting up his own interior design company. Throughout his projects Francois’s ability to transform spaces , considering each and every aspect from an architectural angle to the last detail. His knack for intelligently reworking space and toying with light and volume alongside his eye for elegant and contemporary furniture and fabrics make him a create tour de force. Francois has previously transformed luxury hotels such as the Royal Evian and the Vernet Hotel in Paris. I sat down with Francois to discuss his work and source of inspiration as well as his plans for the future.

Albert Einstein famously said that ‘if a cluttered desk is a sign of a cluttered mind, then, of what is an empty desk sign of?’ - your workspace your workspace seems busy, but extremely well organised. Is it always like that? I like to have many sources of inspiration around me at all times – books, images of design and art… anything visual . But you’re right – I am very orderly! I’m not one of those designers who thrives on “creative chaos”. But at the same time I also don’t need everything to be perfectly in place…But more than tidiness it is important for me when I am working for the environment things to be calm and tranquil. Do you often work/find inspiration at your desk or do you find you work/develop ideas better somewhere else? I have a house overlooking the sea in Marseille. I got here to get away from the noise of Paris and it’s also where I work my best.

There’s quite a lot of books on your desk - do you often reach for them to look for inspiration while you work?

Do you ever invite your clients here? If so, do you see your workspace as an opportunity to exhibit your style?

I work. In my designs I try never to sacrifice comfort for design. A good designer should be able to blend the two.

Absolutely . As a designer I am always looking to the work of people I admire for inspiration – not just interior designers… people from all manner of creative disciplines. Photography, sculptors, architects. I love art so I collect a lot of books about contemporary art.

Sure – I have a lot of meetings with my clients here. I designed my own office so inevitably it reflects my style. In any business, it is important to represent yourself well through your office space…but this is probably even more relevant when you are an interior designer!

There’s no drawers on your desk. Is everything you need truly on the surface?

One book that really stands out on your desk is Gerhard Richter’s Wald - his art seems to distort space. Does his work encourage you to take bigger risks in interior design? Where does his vision cross paths with yours? Contrasts, tension, perturbations and non-conformism inspire me to develop new ideas and unexpected creations. Richter is amongst a group of artists whose work greatly inspires what I do. He pushes the boundaries in the limits posed to him within the realms of his art as I aim to do in designing furniture and spaces of living.

Is there a reason the lamp goes right over your head? Perhaps a ‘Sword of Damocles’ like reminder of what happens if you don’t meet the deadline? I’ve never thought of it like that! But you are correct it is quite imposing… Your chair seems quite uncomfortable. Is that really the case and if so, do you like it because of its appearance? Do you think an interior designer often has to sacrifice comfort in favour of design? It is not so bad! I like it because I like to have a straight back whilst

Yes I prefer to keep everything out on the surface. Drawers breed clutter… you put things away inside them and forget about them for years and years! What are your plans for the rest of 2014? A lot of projects in the pipeline… some public, some private interiors also. A beautiful hotel project in the Alps that I am really excited about. I am very fortunate to be always busy!
