A branding and editorial based brief with a focus on holographic imaging. With this brief I wanted to improve the efficiency in which VHL (View Holographics Ltd) communicate to their client base. Through editorial layout and type I aimed to create a range of printed media that would then be utilised within the work environment and externally at crucial events and business meetings.

Concept.

Holography is a complex subject and the problem I’m trying to solve is communication. So I set out to create a bespoke typeface to brand the publication which demonstrates a complex process to create the form but remains legible and readable. The design has been heavily influenced by the process of making a hologram. At VHL they use RGB lasers to create the coherent source of light that exposes the image.

Using the three lasers as a a basis for my ideas I design a system to form the type. The three fill patterns above represent the three lasers used to record the holograms. The density of the line going across them is relevant to the frequency and wavelength of that colour of light in the spectrum. To complete the type design I created a skeletal structure withing the boarder of the characters to give a 3D effect whilst the type remains 2D, this reflects the appearance of the holograms again. Lastly I rounded the edges of the boards to make the type fit more appropriately with the company’s current branding.

Publication.

I’ve designed the publication to be a high spec print that VHL can send to clients and to potential investors. The design is meant to look like a lot of effort has gone into it to evoke the idea that VHL will put the same effort into their holographic products. I’ve made the layout so that it reads in the easiest way possibly as the purpose is to make holography easier to understand. The content itself has been source from Peter Crosby (employee at VHL), a resource and reference book ‘Practical Holography’ (used by VHL) and myself.

Skills development.

When Starting the brief I didn’t know which skills I specifically wanted to develop but as the brief progressed it became more and more apparant that I needed to be working more with finishing my products. Book binding has always been an interest of mine but I rarely practice it so by doing this brief it has pushed me into re learning and refining my knowledge of book binding and tailoring books to specific purposes. I considered my stock choice a lot more than in past briefs and overall creating publications and working with type and layout is something that I would liek to develop and incorporate into future briefs.

I have a great passion for print and print finishes so I really enjoyed exploring the different possibilities of finishes. I’ve used foil block for the final product as I was able to access a specific holographic foil and do it myself using the college facilities. The foiling relfects the process of holography and strengthens the final outcome giving it the high spec finish that I was aiming to achieve.
